Cannot resize HFS+ partition
I am trying to shrink my OS X partition on my HD, as I need more space on other partitions. When I try to get resize info from diskutil, I get the following error:
%diskutil resizevolume disk0s2 limits
Error obtaining resizing information (is this a Mac OS 9 compatible "wrapped" HFS volume?)
Here is my disk partition:

I don't know if line 2 should say Apple_HFS+ or not, but Disk Utility.app does say its format is "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)." And running Verify Disk on the partition reveals no errors.
Any idea what is happening here? Thanks for any input.

I was wondering, though, why won't it let me make it bigger?
I already had a 1TB partition in the space below it. The screenshot shows me having already deleted it - but still no option to resize the other (larger) 2TB one.
If there is a reason why I can't resize now, then I can take that advice and try and make sure it doesn't happen when I reformat it again.
I would understand if the partition were MBR, but it's not, it's a GUID Partition Table (bottom right), so I'm confused - what is it's problem? ;-)

Cannot resize system partition due to recovery partition

I have a 500GB HD (momentus XT) that replaced my default 320GB HD.
i cannot resize the system partition due to the recovery partition. System keeps on telling me that "map is too small".
Tried diskutil under osx, under lion bootable recovery usb stick, under diskutil through console.
Here is what diskutil tells me.

I want to resize the partition to use the remaining new space i have, of course, and create a bootcamp part.
I am wondering if i can kill the recovery partition without destroying my lion. As i have the recovery transfered successfully to usb stick using the apple utility, i am able to use it anytime.
But... just wondering if that would crash my OS or not.
Or, if anyone sees a way to move the recovery partition to end of the HD so that i can enlarge successfully...Thanks to you both, luckily there's only 600GB on that drive at the moment.

I can't resize my partition on a GUID partition table.
It says "This partition can not be modified"
I don't understand this as I specifically wiped this drive from being a MBR (DOS compatible) and reformatted it with GUID.

i minimize the size of sda6(home folder) in order to give more space to my root partition sda4 but i can't .gparted don't give the option to add the unallocated space to sda4.when i tried to adjust the partitions the swap partition was off

To increase the size of sda4, there must be continuous free space after it.
In your case it's like
sda4
sda5
sda6
You first reduce sda6 and you get free space after it, you need to move sda6(not just resize it). Also you will need to delete sda5(which is your swap) and remake it.
Example:
sda4 - 10GB
sda5 - 4GB
sda6 - 100GB
delete sda5 and resize sda6:
sda4 - 10GB
4GB free space
sda6 - 50GB
50GB free space
move sda6:
sda4 - 10GB
50GB free space
sda6 - 50 GB
4GB free space
resize sda4 and create swap(sda7):
sda4 - 60GB
sda6 - 50 GB
sda7 - 4GB
Might I suggest that you use console tools instead of gparted(imho gparted is buggy). The tools in the arch install iso should do fine. Also you can't resize mounted partitions, so you shouldn't try to touch your arch root partition while using it

I have a problem with resizing my partition C on Windows 8.1. It only has 28 GB and I have run out of every space. The Disc manager for resizing partitions is not working (every option for a Disc C is greyed out). I downloaded three partition managers: Paragon,
Aomei and one more (don't remember the name, cause I deleted it already). All of them were supported by Windows 8.1 32 bit. And still it was not possible to do anything with the disk C, even though I have a lot of unallocated space to use.
I also deleted disk D, so that only Disk C was left, and still I couldn't allocate any space to it, only to shrink it.
Can anyone tell me what else can I do?
It is driving me crazy already. Help please.

I used aomei partition assistant before in my windows 8.1, it worked well. do you use "resize partition" in aomei partition assistant to extend you c drive? if you do like this, the unallocated space on your hard disk should be contiguous behind
the partition c, or you can't extend partition. but if the unallocated space is not contigous behind partition c, you an use extend partition wizard or merge partitions to extend partitionc

So i'm trying to resize my partition, my Macs memory (500gb) is partitioned in half and it shows 250gb for one partition and 250gb for the other which is free
space... it wont let me drag to resize and I don't know what to doBack up your data, create a new partition in the free space, restore the contents of Yoseimite to it, select it in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences, delete the partition on the bottom, and resize the one on the top to the drive's capacity.

I installed Bootcamp and obviously Bootcamp Assistant reduced my main partition so that it could create a new one for me to install Windows on. I finished my project and decided I wanted the space back. Something must have gone wrong when the Bootcamp Assistant removed Bootcamp, because I am left with a 40Gb empty space on my HD.
I can't get Disk Utility to resize my main partition into the empty space. I have looked at many "how tos" and they all show a resize handle at the bottom-right of the partition that can be dragged to expand the partition into the empty space. I don't see that.
I tried running Disk Utility from the recovery mode Command-R on startup, but I have the same issue there as well.
Any help appreciated. I would prefer not to have to wipe everything and start again.Dr Mac, thanks:

Before mods delete/close/move my post 'cause I'm sure there exist hundred of related problems to this let me explain.
I study Engineering in Computational Systems, for my Digital Design class I need some software that only exist for Windows (I've been searching the web looking for alternatives for Mac without success)... So I decided I'd install BootCamp and Windows 7, but I got the **** "cannot resize partition" error...
So here's the deal... I CAN'T make a backup, my external hard drive is damaged, I've been searching and I found that this problem is 'cause BootCamp can't move big files or stuff like that so to fix the problem I have to defrag the hard disk and here comes another problem, I can't afford iDefrag neither...
Any help for defrag or resize my Mac OS X partition?Usually when I see "Cannot resize..." it is because the Windows partition was too small, or they need more room for OS X files. Not because they got the error message from Boot Camp Assistant (which tells you to reformat and restore after you have a backup).
Step #1 is (always) backup before making changes.
Real easy... buy an external, you will need backups for Mac OS and probably Windows. you will want to be able to run OS X off external too at some point.
It isn't because there are big files, it is that they can't be moved.
The free space has to be contiguous, not fragmented, also, in order to create a slice for Windows.
I assume it won't work with a VM running under/inside OS X so you need to run Windows natively.
Some people have bought iDefrag ($49?) and results are anywhere from good to mixed to didn't work.

Hello, I am trying to upgrade my macbook pro to yosemite, but I get the "disk cannot be used to startup your computer" error.
Resizing the partition does not work for me and I get the error "MediaKit reports no such partition" probably because I installed linux in dual boot and the disk manager is lost.
Anyway to tell the yosemite installer that it should not pay attention whether the disk is bootable or not ?
If I am doomed, any way to delete the installer and downloaded OS from my hard drive ?
Thanks for your helpAs usual, the Linux installer wrecked the partition table. You would have to boot from your OS X installation disc and repartition. Doing so will of course remove all data from the drive, so you must back up first if you haven't already done so.

How do I grow an HFS partition on an external USB disk?
I have a USB disk, MBR partitioned, with one ext4 and one HFS+ partition. There is 250GB of unpartitioned space following the HFS+ partition, into which I'd like to grow for Time Machine use.

diskutil refuses to touch the partition, probably because it's MBR ("FDisk") partitioned:

How am I going to fix this? Assuming I am unable to copy the contents of my HFS partition to another temporary place.

Now diskutil correctly identifies it as GPT:

That's right, bummer. Now, is there anything I can do?
Here is the scenario -
I cannot get it to mount or start.
I opened the case to pull the battery ribbon.
When the battery is connected there is a continuous loop of the initial boot. black screen with apple logo, hard drive continues to spin.
Is there anyway I can get it to mount to reformat it? God I hope so.
other thing I thought of is to buy a sata to usb converter but I don't think that would fit the tiny connector.

Resize last partition on external disk
Hi, All!
I have a 1.5 TB external disk that I use for storing large media files and for Time Machine backups.
Since Time Machine tends to use all space available in a disk, I decided to partition the available space giving 1 TB for data and 500 GB for Time Machine. My internal disk was 250 GB, so 500 GB was enough for some history in the backup.
I upgraded my internal disk to 500GB, so the space available for Time Machine is a bit constrained now. I thought I could shrink the data partition (it is still mostly empty) and enlarge the Time Machine partition, but Disk Utility isn't allowing me to do that.
The data partition is the first one on the disk. I've already successfully shrank it to 700 GB. The Time Machine is the second and last partition.
The trouble is that the resizing "handle" is at the "bottom" of the partition, and can't be moved "down". Disk Utility doesn't allow me to grab the "top" of the partition and move it "up".
The disk is partitioned using GUID and I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.2.
My doubt is: should this work or I'm expecting too much from Disk Utility resizing capabilities?
Is there any way to do what I've been trying to do without reformatting any of the two partitions?

1. Resize the first HFS+ partition to about half disk, leaving blank space between it and the second partition.
2. Boot the MacBook with a Ubuntu Live CD (last version). It works perfectly!
3. Run GParted and move the second partition to the beginning of the free space;
4. Reboot to Mac OS X.
5. Verify and repair the external disk with Disk Utility. It found a minor error on the volume header of the second partition.
6. Resize the second partition to the end of free space.
It took about 9 hours to complete, but it is working and Time Machine is doing its first backup now. -
Snow leopard messed up my external drives HFS partition table.
I bought a 500gb Verbatim external store 'n' go hard drive already formated in HFS+ with FW and USB3 interface and had been using fine with over FW for a couple of months. Once when the cable was unplugged by mistake (The sockets are all jigly, don't know why) I couldn't mount the drive but then I used the USB cable and it worked fine.
I kept on using in on FW till one day I was low on battery while I was using the external drive and my mac just switched off! It doesn't, for a misterious reason give me the low on power message anymore. When switched the computer back on my mac couldn't read the drive. I was getting an actual error message saying that the drive was not readable. Tried the usb cable but I was getting the same message. I went to the genius bar and by using disk warrior we were able to get the folders and the files on the root of the drive but nothing inside those folders and there should be 4 levels of folders.
Now my guess is that something somehow messed up the partition table but I might be wrong. Does anyone know of any tool or any way I could restore my lost data?
Any help will be very appreciated!It is still an NTFS partition and it cannot be read to reformat unless the disk is repartitioned . An entire NTFS disk could be repartitioned but I don't think one existing non readable partition can be converted to an HFS partition which is why OSX has the error.
