Cannot resolve private host addresses

Hi,
I have a MacBookPro (10.5.5) in a Windows Network. After our Primary Domain Controller
was updated i get a strange error message when i want to view my network neighbourhood.
The name next to the network icon reads "cannot.resolve.private.host.addresses".
I googled but I have not found a single resource mentioning this error message.
I have access to the internet, i can access all shares in the network via command+k but i cannot
browse the network because of this error.
what is it? what is it that the mac cannot resolve? where can i look further into resolving this issue?
thnx very much
martin

Problem solved
It seems that the Mac made a reverse lookup for its own IP-Adress to get its own name.
Since the new Domain Controller did not have Reverse Lookups enabled the aforementioned problem occured.
After enabling them everything is working fine now

  • Problem with DNS - ping/Safari cannot resolve, but host/dig work OK

    Hi All,
    Have a weird problem with DNS which is a bit similar to the following ones:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2190208
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=337942
    I connect with remote internal network via OpenVPN and from time to time (yes, intermittent problem :)) internal DNS names cannot be resolved.
    When it happens I can still resolve names using host or dig utilities, but applications (like Safari) and ping cannot resolve them.
    resolv.conf has proper DNS server set:
    *$ cat /etc/resolv.conf*
    *# Mac OS X Notice*
    *# This file is not used by the host name and address resolution*
    *# or the DNS query routing mechanisms used by most processes on*
    *# this Mac OS X system.*
    *# This file is automatically generated.*
    *domain openvpn*
    *search openvpn*
    *nameserver 10.0.0.1*
    More than that - it can resolve those internal names when queried directly, for example using host:
    *$ host YYY.XXX.ru 10.0.0.1*
    *Using domain server:*
    *Name: 10.0.0.1*
    *Address: 10.0.0.1#53*
    Aliases:
    *YYY.XXX.ru has address 192.168.x.y*
    but at the same time ping reports "*Unknown host*":
    *$ ping YYY.XXX.ru*
    *ping: cannot resolve YYY.XXX.ru: Unknown host*
    I tried "*dscacheutil -flushcache*" and it did not help. Also tried to comment out domain and search directives in resolv.conf and it did not help as well (and actually it should not matter).
    Any ideas why this can happen and what else can I check when it happens again?
    Thanks!

    I have the same issue. It cropped up after I installed updates to MS Office 2008 and Firefox in which I also saw issues with the icons disappearing in the dock of the applications that were open when I started the Office update. I rebooted to try to get them back, but ended up deleting them and restoring from the Applications folder. I don't know if that's a red herring or not, but I generally try to figure out what has recently changed that may cause something to suddenly start failing.
    I'd been working successfully all morning before it started acting up. Switching from wifi to cat5 had no effect.
    @realaaa, were you able to resolve without a major undertaking, like reinstalling your OS?

  • Limited Internet Access -- Cannot resolve names but can ping IP addresses

    Hi,
    I'm almost at wits end here with the problem I'm having with my MBP running 10.6.7. Here's what's happened on my end:
    I'm an IT professional working with both mac, linux and PC. I upgraded to 10.6.7 a few weeks ago and everything was fine. As a part of my job I volunteered to test a VPN accelerator application from Riverbed that uses one of their "Steelhead" appliances. I installed the software and was testing it when suddenly my machine froze completely and I had to force-power cycle the laptop to reboot it. When the laptop came back up, it reconnected to the network but I was unable to resolve any IP addresses from name.
    I tested the connection repeatedly. I tried different networks. Switching between hardline and wi-fi. I blew away all network configuration and started from scratch. Three times. restarted the mDNSresponder. I uninstalled the appliance software, repeated the network blow away, and tried to connect. I tried reinstalling the software - no dice. Which leaves me where I am now: making a full backup of my drive and important information and formatting it.
    I was hoping beyond hope that someone could point out a possible solution that doesn't involve the nuclear option on my files. I have a lot of applications installed and it will take DAYS of work just to get the machine back to where its supposed to be. I dare not reinstall from a full backup because I don't know which touched file is the culprit in my painful experience.
    At the time when my PC crashed the software was likely intercepting and rerouting name-to-ip resolution to make the accelerator work. It must have temporarily altered a core networking file somehow to accomplish the redirect. When I crashed, the file was locked in a changed state and nothing I do can alter that. I've searched the appliances' web site and scoured Google looking for some hint as to what might have went wrong and tried to find a solution, but it seems that I'm the only person to have had this issue so far - either that or the solution is hidden on page 8,137 of Googles' results after all the ads have been passed up.
    The only thing that I can think of is that my machine was running vmware at the time, and that a combination of VMNET screwing up and the Steelhead appliance application caused my machine to hose itself.
    Like I said, the only thing I haven't done is format and reinstall - something I'm loathe to do at this moment because work is very busy. I still have my bootcamp partition and I've been using that for my work. Right now I am using a borrowed Mac Air to surf the net while I trawl through the various files on my Mac partition.
    So if anyone has had the patience and fortitude to read this far, I'd greatly appreciate any help or suggestions that others might be able to offer! Especially since if I have to deal with any more problems from this VPN device it would be nice to know how to fix this issue.
    Here's a brief summary of what works:
    - Ping via IP address (any location on the net)
    - Manual entry of IP to name translations in the hosts file. (did this to re-download the 10.6.7 cumulative updater)
    - nslookup works for some god-unknown reason.
    Here's what doesn't:
    - Name resolution through web browser or ping from the terminal or network utilities.
    Thanks,
    Roger.

    Roger,
    Nslookup queries the DNS server directly, while other programs (e.g. web browser, ping, etc.) use a system call (gethostname2) which goes through Apple's DirectoryService. The fact that both your VM's and nslookup are working indicates your computer can contact the DNS server via UDP and that the problem probably lies with DirectoryServices.
    Do you have a VPN client installed (something other than Steelhead)? VPN clients modify DNS resolution in order to give you name lookup for servers within the VPN. If you do have a VPN client installed, have you tried uninstalling/ reinstalling it?
    Another approach is to enable DirectoryService verbose logging from the terminal:
    sudo killall -USR1 DirectoryService
    Try a ping and then take a look (or post) the log:
    /Library/Logs/DirectoryService/DirectoryService.debug.log

  • How to resolve the ip address of all computer conntected to host.

    How to resolve the ip address of all computer conntected to host.

    Define it in terms which you can program, I mean ...
    My point is that none of these terms is well-defined: 'connected' for a start. The network is a packet-switch, not a circuit switch, so strictly speaking there are no connections at all.
    What's the purpose behind this?

  • Kerberos problem (cannot resolve hostname)

    We are now trying to setup Xserve G5 cluster computer system (1 head node and 6 cluster node) with OS X 10.4.3, and having trouble with Kerberos.
    Head node has two network addresses: one is static IP address of our university (en0), and the other is 192.168.1.1.(en1) Cluster node has static IP addresses from 192.168.1.2 to 7. We put the name of the head node (computer1.company.private) and the cluster nodes (computer2 to 7.company.private) and their IP addressees in the file of both head node and cluster node (/etc/hosts).
    192.168.1.1 computer1.company.private computer1
    192.168.1.2 computer2.company.private computer2
    We also set the HOSTNAME entry in /etc/hostconfig to (computer1.company.private).
    Command 'Hostname' returns correct name computer1.company.private.
    Then we tried to configure computer1.company.private as an Open Directory master. However, KDC did not start, and realms was the number related to the static address of our university (xxx.xx.xxx.vlan.xxx.net, not 'COMPUTER1.COMPANY.PRIVATE’)
    Command 'slapconfig -kerberize diradmin both 'COMPUTER1.COMPANY.PRIVATE' and xxx.xx.xxx.vlan.xxx.net, both returns 'cannot resolve hostname'.
    We would appreciate it very much if you could give us kind comments and suggestions.
    XserveG5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    We also set the HOSTNAME entry in /etc/hostconfig to
    (computer1.company.private).
    Command 'Hostname' returns correct name
    computer1.company.private.
    Looks like they did that already, which makes me think the DNS is not setup properly. Remember that OS X uses a round robin approach to DNS servers listed. So if you have an internal only DNS, and you put in an external only DNS server in your list. You can and will sparadic DNS related kerberos failures. Especially if it is this way on your head machine.
    Sometimes one failure will cause total failure. Also if you do not setup the host name and DNS before you try to kerborize, you can cause issues, so squence of events is very important.

  • Bypass proxy for FQDN with private ip addresses

    We have Windows 7 with IE 11
    We need this IE behavior:
    "to all FQDN names that resolves to local (private) ip addresses - do not use proxy."
    how can we implement this?
    ("Bypass Proxy Server for Local Addresses" Option don't work as needed)

    Hi,
    Please take a check to see if the following KB article could help here:
    Internet Explorer Uses Proxy Server for Local IP Address Even if the "Bypass Proxy Server for Local Addresses" Option Is Turned On
    The cause: By default, only host names are checked when the Bypass proxy server for local addresses option is turned on.
    The resolution here is :
    To bypass a range of IP addresses or a specific domain   name, specify the addresses in the proxy exception list:
    In Internet Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
    On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
    Click Advanced, and type the appropriate information in the
    Exceptions area.
    Hope this may help

  • Trouble resolving one host name

    I'm running Lion Server with two web sites hosted on it. The two domains are resolved through DynDNS.  I can see both sites both with and without the preceding www from other machines, but when I try to access one site from a browser on the Server, itself, it cannot resolve one address if I prepend the www.  It's very odd and I cannot find anything special about that one domain name that makes it different from the other.
    Here are some lookups and pings I tried from the Server itself.  The problem is if I try to get to www.chanur.net.  As you can see, the lookup for that name gives different results.
    chanur:sites mark$ nslookup www.chanur.net

    The name I applied to the Server itself is server.chanur.net, and configured it in the Server app for "Internet" access so I could VPN in using that name. Could that somehow be causing a conflict of some sort?
    Many thanks in advance!

    Here's another example, where I do the nslookup from my MacBook Pro, instead of from the Server.

  • Cannot resolve ClusterAddress: 10.2.227.1:7005,10.2.227.2:7005

    Hi All,
              Various, hopefully well documented, problems occuring. Well I think they
              are problems :-)
              If anybody can shed some light on some, or all, I would appreciate it very
              much.
              Trying to set up clustering for the first time...
              I am on a multihomed W2K running WL6 SP1, addresses: 10.2.227.1 and
              10.2.227.2
              I am running admin server on port 7001, and the two other servers on port
              7005, each with its own IP address.
              Curious thing: On startup, both servers give a similar message:
              <19-Mar-01 17:41:31 GMT> <Info> <Cluster> <Cannot resolve ClusterAddress:
              10.2.227.1:7005,10.2.227.2:7005>
              Starting Cluster Service ....
              <19-Mar-01 17:41:31 GMT> <Info> <Cluster> <Joined cluster MyCluster at
              address 239.200.200.0 on port 7005>
              It's not clear to me whether that worked or not. It says it can't resolve
              the cluster address, and then it says its joined the cluster. Is there an
              error there or not? Also, why can't it resolve the clusteraddress? The
              documentation says to list the IP addresses of the machine, which is what I
              have done...
              Near the end of the startup sequence, after starting up BOTH, I get in one
              of the servers:
              <19-Mar-01 17:49:18 GMT> <Info> <Cluster> <Adding server
              5618757874964032231S:10.2.227.2:[7005,7005,7002,7002,7005,7002,

              and in the other server:
              <19-Mar-01 17:49:25 GMT> <Info> <Cluster> <Adding
              server -8904987319081427239S:10.2.227.1:[7005,7005,7002,7002,7005,7002

              to
              the cluster>
              Again, it is not clear whether an error occured. There was the "Lost 2
              multicast messages" but it seems to have added it anyway?
              My admin console says both have joined the cluster.
              Another thing: When I shut them down, I get something alon gthe lines of:
              <19-Mar-01 18:01:32 GMT> <Error> <Cluster> <Disconnecting from cluster
              MyCluster>
              <19-Mar-01 18:01:32 GMT> <Error> <Cluster> <Multicast socket receive error:

              to the cluster>
              Again, its not clear whetehr my cluster was actually working or not. Why
              dod I get a socketexception?
              I have run the utils.MulticastTest successfully - well, in that it sends and
              resceives ok:
              eg. E:\bea\wlserver6.0\config\KHDomain>java utils.MulticastTest -N adsf -A

              I have IIS proxying requests through. MY iisproxy.ini file looks like this:
              #WebLogicHost=10.2.227.1
              #WebLogicPort=7005
              WebLogicCluster=10.2.227.1:7005,10.2.227.2:7005
              ConnectTimeoutSecs=20
              ConnectRetrySecs=2
              Debug=All
              DebugConfigInfo=ON
              When I hit 10.2.227.1 it does indeed go through to one of the servers. If I
              take that server down, the requests seem to start going through to the other
              server (then and only then). However, session state is lost. Obviously I
              have to do something else to get session replication to start working...
              Curious things happening though:
              a) I get a lot of JSP recompilation - ie. I take server down, bring it up
              again, and it wants to recompile every jsp again!
              b) I get a lot of HTTP 500 errors coming back from IIS. A refresh usually
              gets it to work. See my post in the weblogic.developer.interest.plug-in
              newsgroup for more than this - it appears that IIS is having trouble talking
              to the proxy (which is setup according to the book).
              That about ends it! Of course, I have something working - but I doubt
              whether my cluster is fully functional because of all of these errors.
              Thanks
              Jon

    I am trying to override the paintComponent method in a class extending a JFrame, but when I call super.paintComponent(g) from inside the overridden method I get the error

    Two things I want to know:
    1. I was trying to access a variable as JLabel
    myLabel; defined in the constructor of a class from
    the constructor of another class. I got this error
    message - "Cannot access non-static variable from a
    static context". Why(When both are non-static am I
    getting the message as static context)?Post some code. It's hard to pinpoint a syntax error like that without seeing the code.
    Also, there may be cleaner ways of doing what you want without having classes sharing labels.
    2. I am using a map to set the attributes of a font.
    One of the key-value pair of the map is
    TextAttributesHashMap.put(TextAttribute.FOREGROUND,Colo
    .BLUE);
    But when I using the statement g.drawString("First
    line of the address", 40, 200); the text being
    displayed is in black and not blue. Why?You need to use the drawString that takes an AttributedCharacterIterator:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.font.*;
    import java.text.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class Example  extends JPanel {
        public static void main(String[] args)  {
            JFrame f = new JFrame("Example");
            f.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            Container cp = f.getContentPane();
            cp.add(new Example());
            f.setSize(400,300);
            f.setLocationRelativeTo(null);
            f.setVisible(true);
        protected void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
            super.paintComponent(g);
            String text = "Every good boy does fine always";
            AttributedString as = new AttributedString(text);
            as.addAttribute(TextAttribute.FAMILY, "Lucida Bright");
            as.addAttribute(TextAttribute.SIZE, new Float(16));
            as.addAttribute(TextAttribute.FOREGROUND, Color.BLUE, 0, 5);
            as.addAttribute(TextAttribute.FOREGROUND, Color.GREEN, 6, 10);
            as.addAttribute(TextAttribute.FOREGROUND, Color.RED, 11, 14);
            as.addAttribute(TextAttribute.FOREGROUND, Color.YELLOW, 15, 19);
            as.addAttribute(TextAttribute.FOREGROUND, Color.MAGENTA, 20, 24);
            as.addAttribute(TextAttribute.FOREGROUND, Color.CYAN, 25, 31);
            g.drawString(as.getIterator(), 10, 20);

  • Installing Sun ONE 5.2 on Win2003 w/no domain "cannot resolve name"

    Hi all,
    Any way to install Sun ONE 5.2 on Win2003 server w/no domain? We only have workgroup. I cannot get past this 1st step of install. If I try to make something up, I get "cannot resolve name" error. It allowed "Dell-2003.domain.com" (Dell-2003 is computername) the first time through, but install failed. Any tips?

    Just what is your hosts file looking like?
    I guess your XP box has an IP address... if not you will get problems sooner or later.
    Ok. assuming you have an IP allocated to your XP system a line like:
    123.123.123.123 xpbox.mydummydomain.com
    in the c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file should work...
    where 123.123.123.123 is the IP address of your workstation and xpbox is the name. mydummydomain.com is the dummy domain that xpbox is faked to be a member of.
    Now, when you install iPlanet the install process gets the computer name and you provide the domain (mydummydomain.com) the install process can resolve the name to an ip via the hosts file as last resort.
    If your xp box uses DHCP and gets an IP address dynamically then sooner or later you will get problems trying to host a Directory Server with this approach.
    Also, ping xpbox.mydummydomain.com beforehand, just to make sure that computer doesnt already exist. grin

  • Gethostbyaddr failing for private IP addresses

    We are having problems with reverse DNS resolution for our private IP addresses. We first noticed this when our syslog-ng was not displaying name in the log entries, but rather IP addresses.
    Nslookup and dig reversed resolved the addresses fine, so we dont think the issue is in DNS.
    We further narrowed down the source of the problem when we wrote a small C program that called gethostbyaddr for the private address. This program also failed to reverse resolve the addresses.
    We decided to snoop the traffic to our DNS server. What we saw was that no packets were being sent. In other words our Solaris server didnt even try to query DNS for the reverse resolution.
    Is there a flag or setting somewhere in Solaris that we can adjust to have reverse resolution for private IP addresses sent to our DNS servers?
    Thanks
    Mike

    Make sure the addresses aren't already present in /etc/hosts or /etc/inet/ipnodes. Otherwise it probably won't attempt to use DNS.

  • How to resolve a host name from IP using JNDI/DNS service provider

    Hi
    I got two questions on JNDI/DNS service provider:
    1) How to resolve a host name when i got an IP
    I understand How I do it inverse.
    Hashtable env = new Hashtable();
    env.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "com.sun.jndi.dns.DnsContextFactory");
    env.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "dns://"+server+"/"+domain);
    DirContext ictx = new InitialDirContext(env);
    Attributes attrs1 = ictx.getAttributes(host, new String[] {"A"});
    2) This example above works when I specify the domain in the provider url.
    If I am not specifing a domain but only the dns server I got an NameNotFoundException.
    What should I do if I don't got the domain?
    get the availible domains and loop on them?

    Hi,
    if your DNS server supports that, you can do a reverse DNS lookup. This works as follows:
    String server = "your.dns.server";
    String domain = "in-addr.arpa";
    String ip = "4.3.2.1";
    Hashtable env = new Hashtable();
    env.put(Context.INITIAL_CONTEXT_FACTORY, "com.sun.jndi.dns.DnsContextFactory");
    env.put(Context.PROVIDER_URL, "dns://" + server + "/" + domain);
    DirContext ictx = new InitialDirContext(env);
    Attributes attrs1 = ictx.getAttributes(ip, new String[] {"PTR"});1: Use the pseudo-domain in-addr.arpa
    2: Use the reverse IP address for lookup, i.e. if your host has 1.2.3.4, use 4.3.2.1!!
    3: Request the PTR attribute

    I am getting a failure trying to invoking a method called sl_Access on a web service.
    (Same code worked in Workshop 7.1, but fails in Workshop 8.0. The WDSL has not
    changed.) WLW is not able to revolve a method parameter called piCustNo. The service
    call works in WLW 7.1, but not 8.0.
    Any insight on how to fix this problem?

  • Getting error message Cannot Resolve Symbol when trying to compile a class

    Hello All -
    I am getting an error message cannot resolve symbol while trying to compile a java class that calls another java class in the same package. The called class compiles fine, but the calling class generates
    the following error message:
    D:\Apache Tomcat 4.0\webapps\examples\WEB-INF\classes\cal>javac
    ConnectionPool.java
    ConnectionPool.java:158: cannot resolve symbol
    symbol : class PooledConnection
    location: class cal.ConnectionPool
    private void addConnection(PooledConnection value) {
    ^
    ConnectionPool.java:144: cannot resolve symbol
    symbol : class PooledConnection
    location: class cal.ConnectionPool
    PooledConnection pcon = new PooledConnection(con);
    ^
    ConnectionPool.java:144: cannot resolve symbol
    symbol : class PooledConnection
    location: class cal.ConnectionPool
    PooledConnection pcon = new PooledConnection(con);
    The code is listed as follows for PooledConnection.java (it compiles fine)
    package cal;
    import java.sql.*;
    public class PooledConnection {
    // Real JDBC Connection
    private Connection connection = null;
    // boolean flag used to determine if connection is in use
    private boolean inuse = false;
    // Constructor that takes the passed in JDBC Connection
    // and stores it in the connection attribute.
    public PooledConnection(Connection value) {
    if ( value != null ) {
    connection = value;
    // Returns a reference to the JDBC Connection
    public Connection getConnection() {
    // get the JDBC Connection
    return connection;
    // Set the status of the PooledConnection.
    public void setInUse(boolean value) {
    inuse = value;
    // Returns the current status of the PooledConnection.
    public boolean inUse() {
    return inuse;
    // Close the real JDBC Connection
    public void close() {
    try {
    connection.close();
    catch (SQLException sqle) {
    System.err.println(sqle.getMessage());
    Now the code for ConnectionPool.java class that gives the cannot
    resolve symbol error
    package cal;

    Is ConnectionPool in this "cal" package as well as PooledConnection? From the directory you are compiling from it appears that it is. If it is, then you are compiling it incorrectly. To compile ConnectionPool (and PooledConnection similarly), you must change the current directory to the one that contains cal and type
    javac cal/ConnectionPool.
