Cannot restore backed up files

Hi,
I need help to restore my old Users folder, which I backed up, using Backup 3, onto six DVD/Rs., just before I did an Erase and Install of Tiger last weekend. I did not have enough iDisk storage to accommodate the 20 GB Users folder but Backup let me go ahead and put it on the 6 discs. After the reinstall I find that both Backup and Disk Utility will only restore the first disc. How can I get all 6 accepted to rebuild the Users folder?

iMac won't start up, disk utility tried to repair disk it shows "keys out of order" error message in red and advises me to back up files, reformat disk and restore backed up files. I have no idea how to back up and restore etc... Help! Please!

Get an external drive of sufficient capacity to hold everything on your internal drive.
Partition and format the external drive.
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Clone your internal drive to the external drive.
Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
         1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
             button.
         2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
         3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
         4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
             to the Destination entry field.
         5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
             the Source entry field.
         6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    Boot from the external drive.
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the external disk icon from which you want to boot.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Reformat the internal drive and install OS X.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
Open Startup Disk preferences and set the internal drive as the startup volume, then click on the Restart button.
Restore your data from your external drive backup.

  • Disk Repair notified me it could not repair the HD.  Iam to reformat the disk and restore backed up files.  OS Utilities give me a "Restore From Time Machine Backup" option.  I have not reformatted the disk;  does this restore option do both?

Disk Repair reported that it could not repair the HD Disk.  I am to reformat the disk and restore backed up files. OSX Utilities give me a choice of restoring from time machine backup (which I have on MyPassport) but no information on reformatting the disk, which I assume I have to do first.  How do I reformat the HD ...or does the restore from Time Machine do both things?

Boot OS X Recovery and use Disk Utility.
If Disk Utility reported the disk cannot be repaired though, you should replace it with a new one.

  • Lightroom - how to restore backed up files (not Lightroom catalogue) from one external drive to another?

How to restore backed up files (not lightroom catalogue) from one external drive to another.
I recently backuped my photo files from one external drive to another. The backup (carbon copy cloner) pointed to some corrupt files on the original drive.
I have deleted those files and am finding good copies of them  in Time Machine backups.
I want to get rid of the original external drive; use the recent backup as my main external and then back it up onto a brand new drive.
What I am not sure about is how to point lightroom to the backups so it knows to look on the new drive instead of the old drive and all those exclamation marks and question marks go away.
There are close to 60,000 images in numerous folders all with one 'parent folder.'
My best guess is from Lightroom Help - Create and Manage Folders -  Locate Missing Folders
Can I point to the one parent folder and all the subfolders will come back?
Is this the process to recover files into lightroom and will there be a problem with so many photos?

  • Hi,  Had boot issue and got the following from DU repair function on Macintosh hd: updating boot support.....Error: Disk utility can't repair this disk.....reformat and restore backed up files. How is that done or do I go to Genius?

In reference to question the computer gave no warning but lost internet connectivity.  I shut down for a while and when returned it would only boot to gray logo screen with spinning gear.  Ran disk utility and on Mac HD drive it stopped after "Updating boot support partitions as required". Then in red: Error: Disk utility can' repair this disk ....disk, and restore backed up files.   I'm running OS X 10.8 and had just updated the iOS about three days ago.  Not familiar with reformat process on MacBook Pro and would like some ideas whether I should go to the Genius Bar here in Sydney or try it on my own.   I have been using time machine to back up to a 1TB La Cie drive right up to the crash.   Thanks for any advice.

Well it turned out the drive was shot.  Took it to the genius bar yesterday and they ran a test on the drive before trying the restore routine again.  Drive failed.
Replaced the drive and got the MBP back today.  Pretty quick and decent service once you get an appointment.
Now having trouble figuring how to do the Time Machine  saved files.  Have several applications which I'd like to keep but not sure how to trans the apps from my backup to the new.  Hunting for answers on that on the web.
    Thanks for you help, Eustace.

  • Restoring Backed Up files in the program from the Restore Disk 1

My computer was having some serious issues so i decided to restore it but before that I chose to backup some of the files.  It (the program that came with my HP) gave me several options of things I could choose to back up like emails, documents, photos, movies, etc.
I chose to backup emails, browser settings, documents, etc to an external source (a docked hard drive).  When th process was done I saw that a backup with a date listed was showing on the hard drive.   I then went about restoring my computer back to factory.  Afetr all was said and done, I updated my computer back to where it was initially before the resore than went about restoring the files I had saved or backed up I thought.
I went into the folder that was was saved and foound a program listed that said RecoveryMgr.  I clicked and started what I thought was the process to restore my emails, documents, etc.  It completed but I found none of the backed up items I had tried to save.  I only found a folder on my desktop labeled System Recovery Files - shortcut.   What am i doing wrong?  I need those files back.

This is the procedure to restore back up files:

  • Why i cannot restore back after software update?, why i cannot restore back after software update?, why i cannot restore back after software update?

Why i cannot restore back after update software?

    What does "restore back" mean?
If it means go backwards to some earlier version of iOS, then Apple has never allowed that.
If it means reload the contents of your iPhone after doing a software update, you should be able to do that.

I am crystal clear from the very begining ,you are misleading this thread to increase yours post and nothing else.
OP is restoring only archive logs and for that it need all archive logs including the archive for the current redo log file. So for that we need "alter system archive log current;".
Yours this illusion is abrupt and without any proof. As you think that before backing up "alter system archivelog current" will be helpful in restoring all the OP's below archived log.Its a fun...

  • My computer was stolen. How can I restore backed up files to another computer from Time Capsule?

My stolen computer's files were backed up to a Time Capsule. I would like to restore some data files to another laptop. How do I do this? Thanks!

    Sorry to hear that!
You could use Migration Assistant to pull the data from the Time Capsule to the new computer.

  • Unable to restore backed up files after recovery

I had to do a system recovery, and in the process backed up my files.  After recovery, I updated Microsoft and HP files, installed Norton 360, Office 2007, Outlook, and Nikon photo software.  I then tried to restore my backed up files.  Every time a User Account Control box pops ups and stating an unidentified program wants to access my computer.  I press allow, User account Control box goes away but nothing else happens.  Help!

    Hey asjhawk,
If you go into the advance backup and restore function are the database on your device and on your backup the same size?
    Also you can try this.
    Open the contact list.
Press the Menu key, then click Filter.
Clear the check box beside the category.
Let us know how you make out.

  • Repaired imac has come back with lion. how do I restore backed up files

I had my iMac's hard disk replaced under warranty. I now need to restore my backed-up files from time machine.
The Apple store were nice and have upgraded my OS from Snow Leopard to Lion, so I'm now confused as to how I make sure I restore the right files for my applications etc.
How do I go about it? I'd like to keep Lion, but I also want to make sure I've got all my applications etc. from Snow Leopard running.

Boot with the SL install disc, erase the new HD, install SL, and on first boot migrate from your TM backup.
    It's easier than that.
Just do a full system restore, per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14.  No need to erase the disk or install Snow Leopard -- the restore will do all that for you, plus you'll have the exact same version of OSX as you did before.

  • I cannot restore back my data back to my Q5 ! PELASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

im in the middle of a huge problem where i have become desperate and lost, here is how it all began, first of all i received an alert that a new update is available for my Q5 which is 10.2.1537 when i started to downloanding it i received an error that built in memory is full WHICH IS NOT! secondly i thought in order to get the latest update i had resolve this memory error by WIPING OFF the mobile so i did a FULL DATA BACK UP while it was running OS 10.2.0.424 , and then DID the full WIPE, but it took around 6 HOURS!!!! after the wiping process i tried to download the new update 10.2.1537 and it was successful, i connected my q5 to my laptop and opened blackberry link (latest version) selected the BACK UP FILE which i made before the wipe , BUT IT WAS UNSUCCESSFULL ( the alert message was this : this dats file isn't compatible with the version of the device software that you are currently running, update your device software and try again) WHICH i did downgrade to the previous version OS 10.2.0.424 and tried to restore the data file, but it WOULDNT WORK! please HELP im in desperate need for your help ive got my whole life on this mobile and right now im isolated!
the following day what happened is, i did try what was mentioned in the link BlackBerry 10. Restoring Backup after a firmware downgrade. i did exactly the same but it FAILED, and i got this error (there could have been a problem with the device or connection during the restore. Verify that the device is turned on and connected) and then device restarts afterwards, hence, i started to get this error message after i updated to latest OS 10.2.1.539 but when i tried to restore the back up when i was running the previous OS 10.2.0.424 the error message was ( the back up isn't compatible etc... ) this is really confusing, my device is working just fine and its properly connected with no problems, ive been searching and looking for solutions all over the internet but no luck , im really exhausted ive been working on my q5 for almost 26 hours, im just praying to get this fixed.

Same Here..after upgrade won't restore, I did backup with blackberry link and it was a successfull backup..I brought it to the service centre and ask the to restore it for me with no success as well..they even downgrade my phone to 10.1...no success..please find the bug on your OS or BlackBerry LINK to fix this..my data is very important to me..BTW BlackBerry protect also doesn't do a proper backup..only my previous BlackBerry (OS 7) backup is available for restore..this is the second time I lose data to BlackBerry (before was in my Dakota)...
