Cannot restore because incompatible or corrupted

Hi,
I recently accidently updated my iPod to the newest version 5.1.1 from 5.1 and in the process lost all my app data and notes etc. According to a thread I read earlier, even if I could restore it, it would not downgrade it back right? I cannot restore now because it says my iPod is either incomptabile or corrupt etc.  Basically, all I want to do is get back all my app data. But I cannot use any of the backups before I accidently upgraded and lost everything because I get that error because I think it was not compatible since there are two different software versions. Can anyone find me a solution to this? Is it possible for me to email Apple to have them fix something up or something. I really want my app data back and all that.
Thanks in advance.

Well if iTunes still recongnize your iPod, then try to restore your iPod touch from DFU mode.
Put your iPod touch into DFU mode, then iTunes should be able to restore your iPod (I did this with my friend's iPhone).
Internet connection may be required.
To put your iPod into DFU mode:
1. Plug your iPod touch into your computer and turn it off.
2. Then hold down the power button for 3 seconds.
3. Then without releasing the power button, also hold down the home button for 10 seconds.
4. Then release the power button, but keep holding the home button down for 15 seconds.
5. Now you are in DFU mode.
6. Open iTunes.
7. Then there should be a pop up window asking you to restore your iPod and click restore. If not then find your iPod like you usually would and click restore.
8. Then wait until your iPod is done restoring.

    Hi!
I upgrade my iPhone 5 from ios 7.1 to 7.1.1.
When it finished I wanted to restore with my backup but iTunes says that it can't because incompatible or corrupted.
What can I do then to restore my iPhone?

Backups are only used for restoring iPhones via iTunes.
If you desire to go about another method for extracting data from a backup, use google to find out how (if possible) to make that happen.

Windows cannot boot because of missing/corrupt hal.dll! Help!

    Hi,
make sure you have disconnected all non-essential external devices (printers, scanners, external harddisk) prior to installing BootCamp Windows.
Leave only mouse, keyboard and display connected.
Make sure that your XP CD is either retail or OEM/systemBuilder version and not a manufacturer-bundled one.
Also make sure that the CD is 'clean' (no dust, no scratches, etc.).
Use the BootCamp Assistant to revert back to one single OSX volume.
Use OSX Disk Utility to Verify your harddisk and repair permissions.
Retry the XP installation from scratch.
Generally using NTFS is more likely to not getting the 'missing hal.dll' error.

If you have forgotten your Restrictions code, then follow the instructions
below but DO NOT restore any previous backup. If you do then you will
simply be restoring the old Restrictions code you have forgotten. This
same warning applies if you need to restore a clean system.
A Complete Guide to Restore or Recover Your iDevice (if You Forget Your Passcode)
If you need to restore your device or ff you cannot remember the passcode, then you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and re-sync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
         1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to update.
         2. Connect your device to your computer.
         3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
         4. Select the Summary tab.
         5. Select the Restore option.
         6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the Back Up
option (see in the image below). If you have just backed up the device, it is not
             necessary to create another.
         7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
         8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
             logo while starting up:
After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
              you see "iPhone is activated."
         9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup. If you do not have a
backup to restore, then restore as New.
If you are restoring to fix a forgotten Restrictions Code or as a New device, then skip Step 9 and restore as New.

  • Ipod cannot restore"because files are being used by another application"

    Hello all,
I hope someone can help me. I think I mad a big mistake. I did a favor for my father who bought the newest IPod clip on shuffle for my mom. I agreed to get it up and running using my laptop, (which has Itunes for my Ipod w/video) would this create a conflict. Unfortunately I didn't think of asking BEFORE i tried to get the shuffle up and running. The shuffle works fine now but my 30GB Ipod is not able to sync any songs and has requested me to restore to the default settings. Which I tried but when I do it states that I can't because "files are being used by another application" So I tried to use the chat help on this website and when I logged in it picked my product type as a SHUFFLE. Can someone give me any advice. Thanks

  • HT201365 forgotten ipad passcode but cannot restore because find my phone/ipad is activated, any help

iv forgotten the passcode on my ipad 4 useing ios 7 and when i try to restore using itunes on my pc a message appears saying that the find my ipad feature needs to be switched off first on the ipad, unfortunately i cant get into the ipad to do this, any help please.

    Hello emilyg06,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
Take a look at this article about what to do if you have forgotten your Passcode:
iOS: Forgotten passcode or device disabled after entering wrong passcode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1212
    Try this first:
Connect the device to the computer with which you normally sync and open iTunes.
Note: If iTunes asks you to enter the passcode, try another computer that you have synced with. Otherwise, go to "If you have never synced your device with iTunes, or you do not have access to a computer" section below.
If the device is still disabled, or if iTunes does not automatically sync your device, sync the device with iTunes.
If you have chosen to encrypt your backup, it will contain the passcode. Disable backup encryption before restoring from backup. Learn more about iOS backups in iTunes.
When the backup and sync is complete, select Restore from Backup and choose the most recent backup of your device.
And this section if the above does not work.
Alternatively, place the device in recovery mode and restore it to erase the device:
Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device.
    All the best,
    Sterling

  • Cannot restore because 'backup session failed'

I'm working with an original iphone, and am trying to get it to restore to a backup via iTunes (10.1).
If I look at the Backup folder (<MobileSync < Application Support < user Library), I see that not all of the backups show in the restore pulldown list in iTunes.
My original reason for trying a restore had to do with the phone freezing and not turning off (neither by time-out nor by button control). So it was some funkiness with the phone behavior, which led me to try a restore. I have no reason to think the phone hardware has somehow gone bad, since I've reasonably good care of the phone for 4+ years. Maybe I'm wrong to think it's more of a software issue; any thoughts about hardware going bad?

As it relates to hardware, the phone I'm referring to in my previous post had a broken on-off button, which prevented it from going into DFU mode.
Borrowed another original iPhone, switched my SIM, brought it down to 3.1.2 from 3.1.3, and I have a working phone.
Problem now is that I can't access the backups made by my original iPhone that were made with 3.1.3. I've posted in the software area with this thread:

  • My daughter forgot her itouch passcode.  itunes will not let me restore because it says i have no internet connection, when i do.  we cannot get into the device and it is useless.  help!

My daughter forgot the passcode for her ipod touch device.  She is completely locked out.  I tried plugging into our computer and itunes and clicking restore.  I keep getting a pop up saying itunes cannot restore because I am not connected to the internet.  My internet connection is fine!  Please help!  She has only had this decive since Christmas and it is useless!

Restore the iPod from the computer to which the iPod is synced. For information and instructions, see:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1212
If that will not work, you'll need to put the iPod into Recovery Mode and then try the Restore again:

  • IPhone 4s stuck in Recovery Mode. CANNOT Restore. Help!

I need help getting my iPhone out of recovery mode. All that the screen shows is a black background, the white charger, and an arrow pointing at the iTunes icon. When I plugged the charging cable into my computer to recharge my phone's battery -- it had gotten below 10% before the screen changed to this -- iTunes tells me that I need to restore my iPhone.
Here's the problem. Although my back up is pretty much up to date -- I backed up yesterday -- this afternoon, I was at a sports event my company held, with more than 300 participants, all children. I took more than 100 (possibly 200) photos of the children at the request of the company president, to use on the company's web site and social media accounts (I am the company's webmaster). My phone battery died (the Apple logo came up, and then the screen went blank) as the last of the award winners was on the podium (it happened to be my son, so a friend snapped his photo). When I got into the car, I plugged the phone in, and all I got was the low battery icon. When I got home and plugged the phone into the AC base, the charger/iTunes graphics came up. I thought it odd that iTunes was being requested, so I took the phone and the cable and plugged into my laptop... where I was informed of the need to restore the phone.
I CANNOT restore. I CANNOT lose those photos. I already showed them to my boss (my NEW boss... I only got hired last week!) and she was very excited about how great they'll look online. The site is sorely lacking in photos of our children's events. I cannot restore because it will go back to what I had yesterday... and I need these photos!
How can I NOT restore? Please don't suggest my purchasing some software package. The reason I got this job is because I don't have any income and I can't afford $70 software or the time. If the phone must be restored, then I most definitely will need help in attempting to recover the lost data (the photos!). Please, please help... I just spent the last four hours taking these photos and I cannot afford to lose them! Regardless of what it says here under Product, I hae an iPhone 4s and it is running the most up to date iOS, whatever number that is at this point in time. Thank you in advance for your help!

It is unfortuante that this happened. However, the iPhone will have to be restored. There is no option other than maybe some third party software, if there was another option, you would know already.
You could restore it and see if you had iCloud photostream on. It stores photos you take for up to thirty days. If it was enabled, restore your device and turn it on in settings -> icloud and those photos will show up no problem.
If you did not, it is a possibility that something like dropbox was performing backups of those photos.
I am really sorry this happened to you with the new job and everything, but a restore is unfortunately required as your iPhone has already lost this data anyway.
