Cannot restore .dmg file

Before re-installing Snow Leopard I used Disk utility to make a disk image as backup of my HD, and burnt it on a DVD. Now, after the re-installation, I'm not able to mount and open the .dmg file. I'd like to restore important folders. Who can help?

Are you dragging the .dmg file to the desktop before you try to mount it?

  • Cannot open dmg files in mavericks

After installing Mavericks on my iMac I cannot open dmg-files. All that happens is that the system tells me "The following disk images couldn't be opened", with the reason "no mountable file systems".
Now, all I can find when discussing this issue is that "your download is corrupted" or "check your disk" or "reinstall Mavericks!". I have checked and rechecked the files, they are complete and should work. My disk is checked and I have reinstalled Mavericks but nothing happens.
It seems to be a fairly new/rare problem, I can't find any discussion on this problem elsewhere...

I'm having the same problem. I don't have any answers. But here's some information about what I'm seeing that might help someone sort this out.
    I recently upgraded to Mavericks
Both newly downloaded dmg files and ones that were downloaded and sucessfully opened under a previous version of OS X cannot be opened now
I have two user accounts on the same machine. On one I can open dmgs without problem. On the other I get the error.
I'm using the same browser (chrome) on both accounts to download the same disk image, with different results.
    Both accounts are admin accounts
I transferred the disk image that opened properly on my main account to the second account's ~/public/drop box folder and the second account could not open the image.

  • Cannot open DMG files

Hello. I cannot open DMG files. I have had the problem with a download of Adobe Photoshop and the Combo Update for Mac OS 10.4.10. I have re-downloaded both files.
(When I download, I am getting two separate files for each, one dmg, and one dmg.part, which the OS seems to think is a quicktime movie file. Is this normal? I don't remember.) Anyway, this is the error:
The following disk images failed to mount; name of file, not recognized.
I have tried most of the fixes found on the site, and none of them have worked for me. Here is a short run down of what I have tried:
    Running Disk Permissions Repair
    Restarting
    Opening from Stuffit
    Opening from Disk Utilities
Opening from Mount (downloaded from Internet)
I thought that I read that downloading the Combo Install would fix the problem with the Disk Mount, but I cannot open that either.
    What should I do?
    I appreciate any help!

  • I cannot open dmg files with Yosemite

So installed Yosemite. All seemed fine but
I now cannot open dmg files. If I double click on them, nothing happens. If I say open with "diskimagemounter" nothing happens. If I say open with Disk Utility it says wrong version of Disk Utility. If I move them back to a computer with Mavericks, they open fine. Repaired permissions and no change.
    What do I do please?

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Download and reinstall the 10.10.1 update.

  • Cannot restore BKF files in Windows 7 - show stopper

I've yet to see a way of restoring BKF files backed up from Windows XP, into Windows 7.
Pretty annoying when MS say to use NTBackup to backup your files on Windows XP prior to installing Windows 7.
I delayed going from Windows XP to Windows Vista as I wanted to see what Windows 7 was like. Unfortunately without being able to restore my files, I'm going to have to ditch the RC and go back to WinXP. And hope that MS come up with an approach for properly migrating from WinXP to Win7. Otherwise, good ol' WinXP may have a few years left in it yet.
And sad thing is apart from that, everything else was going well.
    Fingers crossed!!

    Hi Mitch
Restoring files from the older NTBackup is not supported in Windows 7. There was a program released for Windows Vista that allowed restoring files backed up with NTBackup in Windows XP, but this restoration utility depended on the Windows Removable Storage Manager which is not included or compatible with Windows 7.
The only suggestion I can make is that if you have or know someone who has either a Windows XP or Windows Vista system, use that system to restore the files and then simply copy them to external media and then move them to your Windows 7 system. Here is a link for your convenience.
Download details: Windows NT Backup - Restore Utility for Windows Vista
    Hope this helps.
Thank You for testing Windows 7

  • Cannot download .dmg files from Apple Developer

I am unable til download XCode 6 beta .dmg files on my Macbook Pro with OSX 10.9.4 (I have put a Samsung SSD as primary drive and a conventional harddisk as second in the DVD bay). I have a paid IOS developer account and is logged ind.
The problem is the same with Safari, Chrome and Firefox.
I can download the same .dmg files without problems with my Windows 8.1 computer, and install them after transfer to the mac - so that is my solution right now.
I can download .dmg files from other sites on my mac (eg. Intego) without problems.
I use Intego antivirus/net security but uninstall does not help the problem.
In all 3 browsers, a new tab is opened at it just spins til i finally times out.
    Any hint appreciated.
    Palle

I have now found that the problem is with:
    1) the developer page for XCode 6 beta ressources - but not with any other webpages, also no problem with the XCode 5 ressources
    2) library downloads from prefrerences within XCode 6 beta (currently beta 5) but ok within XCode 5.1 preferences.
    - so the problem is NOT with .dmg files - but any file having anything to do with XCode 6 beta. So:
Maybe I should rather ask in the developer forum.

  • I cannot download dmg files

Everytime I try to download a dmg I just get a black screen and nothing downloads.

    Hi aikidojoe,
Sorry to say I have not been able to solve the problem.   However, the problem only exists with Safari, as
I also have Google Chrome and Firefox and am able to download dmg files on those.
I also have another problem with Safari that appears to have begun at the same time, I can't view or download
PDF files from websites on Safari, but again I can on Google Chrome and Firefox.
Even stranger (without going into a long list) there are things I can do Safari that I can not do on Google Chrome or Firefox, and other things I can do on Safari and Firefox but not Google Chrome, and still other things I can do on Safari and Google Chrome but not on Firefox.   All these things should work on all 3 browsers.
To make a long story a little shorter, with the exception of the problems with dmg and PDF files, overall Safari seems to be faster and handles the majority of things better than Firefox and Google Chrome.   So, in order to be fairly functional, when I need to download dmg files or PDF files I use Google Chrome which appears to be better than Firefox in these two areas.
Although I don't know what the actual problem is or what to do about it, I believe the problem is with Safari itself.   The current versions of Safari are made for 32 or 64 bit processors (I still use a 32 bit processor) and I think the problem is in this dual programming.
The latest versions of Firefox and Google Chrome are also made for 32 or 64 bit processors and again I think there are dual processing problems manifested in the fact they they won't do certain things right.
I plan to upgrade to a 64 bit computer this month and will try to remember to let you know what happens with the 3 browsers with the new setup.
In the meantime I would appreciate your comments on the above and any ideas you may have.
I hope this helps in some way.
    Good Luck!
    Hal

  • I cannot install dmg file applications to my ibook

Gud day guys ! I'm having trouble installing dmg applications on my ibook ie. yahoo messenger, firefox browser even safari 3

To add to Advanced User and Roam's always sound advice ...
Whenever you download and install software, make sure your Mac meets the minimum requirements. For instance, I just checked Yahoo Messenger, here are the min requirements: System requirements: 10.4 (Tiger) or 10.5 (Leopard), Intel or PowerPC. So if you are running Panther, 10.3, then the Yahoo Messenger .dmg file won't allow you to install the software.
    Firefox: System Requirements
Mac OS X 10.4 or later
256MB of RAM or higher recommended
    200MB hard disk space
    Safari 3.1.2 requires Tiger 10.4.11

  • HELP: Cannot restore DMG image stored on NTFS disk!

Hello. My MacBook Pro has OSX Lion on it.
I have created a DMG image of my starting volume using Disk Utility. The image was saved on an NTFS formatted external USB disk. I used Paragon NTFS for Mac to activate writing on NTFS partitions. The image was created, tested and it mounted fine. It's size is 105GB.
I have restarted the system and am accessing Disk Utility from the recovery partition that OSX Lion creates. Disk Utility can see the NTFS disk and I can choose the DMG image as source and the partition on the internal hard disk as a target without problems but when I press the restore button and the Image scan process is going to start I just get an error that says "Unabke to scan Mac-OSX HD. Resource busy". When I try the SCAN BEFORE RESTORE command on Disk Utility on the image I am getting "Unable to scan MAC IMAGE.DMG (Not such file or directory)".
I have already erased my startup disk and really need to get this image back in place. It is the only backup I have of my data.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the fast answer. Excuse my question but are you certain of this? This would be a big job because I would have to:
    1. Find another external hard disk. Most probably it will be NTFS formatted because this and FAT32 are the most common formats out there.
    2. Find another apple computer to transfer the image to the other hard disk
    3. Format my external hard disk as a HFS disk
    4. Transfer the DMG image back to the HFS hard disk.
    5. After this reformat my external hard disk as NTFS because I live in an hybrid world where PCs and Macs coexist and NTFS is a good bet for compatibility.
If you indeed are certain that that is the correct answer to this situation then I will move into it immediately.
    Thanks.

  • Ipod cannot restore"because files are being used by another application"

    Hello all,
I hope someone can help me. I think I mad a big mistake. I did a favor for my father who bought the newest IPod clip on shuffle for my mom. I agreed to get it up and running using my laptop, (which has Itunes for my Ipod w/video) would this create a conflict. Unfortunately I didn't think of asking BEFORE i tried to get the shuffle up and running. The shuffle works fine now but my 30GB Ipod is not able to sync any songs and has requested me to restore to the default settings. Which I tried but when I do it states that I can't because "files are being used by another application" So I tried to use the chat help on this website and when I logged in it picked my product type as a SHUFFLE. Can someone give me any advice. Thanks

I get this messager and I have no other ipods or dev. to my system and have problems when I disconnect also?? Even have done a complete restore, to no help. Help

  • Cannot restore some files/folders from Time Machine Backup

When I try and restore files or folders from my Pictures folder, which is a sub folder of my user I get the message "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access xxxx". As far as I can tell this has only just started to happen because I've recovered stuff from the folder since I bought the machine in July. Yesterday I deleted an old Time Machine backup folder from the Time Machine disc. This caused empty trash to go berserk - the "files to delete" count went negative and I had to stop/restart the empty trash command about 20 times before it sorted itself out. Maybe this has screwed some permissions somewhere? I have run disc utility and repaied permissions on my hard drive and verified the TM drive. Still no joy. The permissions for Pictures look OK. Anyone any ideas?

Probably you corrupted your Time Machine Backup by manually deleting older backups- that is dangerous.

  • Cannot open .dmg files, Invalid checksum...

Im getting the problem Invalid checksum with all downloaded .img files saying its unable to verify the file.
Have tried the update pack from the mac page, firefox installer and others but none works.
I thought the problem would be the hdd but i tried another hdd and got the same problem.
Have tried with both Stuffit expander and Disk Copy.
I have tried reinstalling the OS on both harddrives and still get the same problem.
Any clues what the problem might be?
    Thanks!

I have the same problem. In fact iTunes will not run or update on my machine. All software updates fail with this same error.

  • Cannot restore default file icons (maybe caused by Vox?)

In a nutshell, even though I have deleted Vox, the Vox icon appears against all my FLAC files. I have tried the normal way of replacing the file icon (deleting the icon from the Get Info window) without success. In fact I've tried everything I can think of, hence this post!
I installed Vox as a simple FLAC player and playlist generator when I ran Mavericks and set it up as default player for all non iTunes audio files. All was well until Vox updated itself to a different more bloated app that wanted to take over my computer. So I uninstalled it using AppDelete. However, all my FLAC files have the little Vox orange loudspeaker next to them and I can't find a way to get rid of it. I have tried highlighting the file, opening the Get Info window and deleting the icon there but it will not delete (and Cut is greyed-out in the Edit dropdown). I can paste another icon over it but it will only affect that individual file, not any other audio file - and if I delete that icon the Vox icon is underneath, as though it's the default.
In the Info window I have said that all FLAC files should be opened with a different app (Cog) and indeed Cog is now the system FLAC player. But the icons are still the Vox icons!
Importantly, in a normal Finder window, all the FLAC files display the proper default icon (musical note in a grey square). It's if I display the files from the Document or Download stacks in the dock that the Vox icon is shown. But it's always shown in the Get Info window.
Obviously this is not a major issue: everything still works without a problem. But I am annoyed that Vox has been able to burrow into my system in this way and want it all cleaned up!
Thank you for any help you might be able to give. I'm running Yosemite 10.10 (as my sig may say something different!)

I found the answer to this with help from the people at MacBB. I used a free app called LiteIcon which did the job very neatly for me. I also tried using OnyX and Cocktail but neither of them worked.

  • My Safari can´t open .dmg files after downloading

I updated to Mac OS X 4.9. But since this update, Safari cannot open .dmg files after downloading! On 10.4.8 it was not a problem. What can I do?
    eMac G4 PPC   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Darn...I thought that would do the trick.
Given the other problems you mention, more and more, it seems a reinstall of the OS, using Archive and Install is going to be necessary. Have you ever done an Archive & Install of the OS? Important you carefully read the description of the process. If you are uncertain, I find the Take Control Upgrading to Tiger E-zine to be a very helpful guide.
Once you reinstall the OS, then you can upgrade to 10.4.8 using the combo update, repairing permissions via Disk Utility in your Utilities folder when complete.
One question: Not sure why you have run into all these problems on the 10.4.9 upgrade. It worked without problem for me. Anything unusual happen during the install?
