Cannot restore ipod 4th gen without updating to ios 4.2 and cannot do that

My son cannot remember his passcode to his new ipod touch 4th generation. I go into itunes to do a "RESTORE" and it won't restore unless I update to the new ios 4.2 software. When I try to update, I get the "network connection timed out" error. It will never update. I have disabled every bit of security on the computer, removed and uninstalled all anti-virus software, removed firewalls from windows and the router, unplugged and replugged in the modem and the router to do a hard reset, tried creating a new user account in Windows to see if that helped and it gave the same error. I was told by Apple that I must not be able to do it for some reason and I have to go to an Apple store to have it done. That is ridiculous that they can't even figure it out. My son just wants his ipod restored so he can use it and I just want to be able to do updates.

i fixed mine!@#!@# all i did was closed kaspersky and it worked i don't know what your problem is tho since u uninstalled your anti-virus
most people disable there anti virus but the anti virus doesn't fully close like kaspersky
i hope u fix your problem

  • Restore iPod 4th gen, without home button or passcode

So, recently, my little sister has lost her iPod touch, we just found it and the home button is broken and she doesnt remember the passcod, it has been disabled for a while. Is there anything we could do since we can't bypass the passcode using the home button and power/lock button?

    - Reset the iPod.
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Then try again.

If you're using iTunes Match, be sure to set Use Cellular Data to On in Settings>iTunes & App Stores in order to access your music over 3G.  If you're using home sharing to stream music from another computer/iTunes library in your home, this music is only accessible when you're device is connected to your home wifi.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • My daughters ipod 4th gen will no longer charge past 20% and will not connect to a pc in order to back everything up. the cable is working fine, otherwise it would not even charge to the 20%. i have tried the reset to not lose any data and no luck. help!

my daughters ipod 4th gen will no longer charge past 20% and will not connect to a pc in order to back everything up. the cable is working fine, otherwise it would not even charge to the 20%. i have tried the reset to not lose any data and no luck, home+power for 10-15 seconds. I really would like to not lose everything she has, again, because I can't back it up this time. I have tried charging via a wall outlet and PC and both charge fine, just only to 20%. I am using the cable that came with it so no aftermarket issues there. Please help so I don't have to reset everything again.

Because once it has charged enough to be powered on as soon as you turn it on it says battery is at 20% and will not charge anymore after that, it just runs for about 5-10 minutes before the battery dies again. The battery cycles discharge/recharge daily and its not on the charger at full charge for more than a couple hours and is never totally dead for more than a couple of hours.

  • HT201412 Can't restore iPod 4th gen, HELP!!!

Hi! I can't restore my iPod 4th gen. because it will not show up under "devices" on iTunes! I plug my iPod into my computer, and a little stop sign comes up telling me my iPod is locked with a passcode and needs to be unlocked. Heres the catch: my iPod has a erratic/unresponsive touch screen! I can't shut it down or unlock it! So ultimately the devices column does NOT show up. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRICIATED!

  • IPod 4th Gen not updating "played" status.

Hi, recently I'm having a problem with my Ipod touch 4th Gen. It works fine, plays music and videos normally, but it does not update the "last played" status, nor "last played date". This is a problem because I sync my videos based on "most recent not played", and I have some smartlists that make use of that statur or date too.
This happened once before I upgraded from iOS 5 to Six, but apparently was corrected; however, since I upgraded to iOS 6, none of my played items is being updated. Could it be because of the iOS upgrading, or maybe there is something else I'm missing?

iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Mac OS X
It will not show up in Finder/Spotlight search

  • Restore ipod 4th gen on windows 8

im trying to restore an ipod 4th gen on a computer with windows 8. It will go through the complete restore and restart but when it comes back on it is still in restore mode?????

    Maybe:
Restore loop (being prompted to restore again after a restore successfully completes)
Troubleshoot your USB connection. If the issue persists, out-of-date or incorrectly configured third-party security software may be causing this issue. Please follow Troubleshooting security software issues. .
Next try placing in DFU mode and then restoring.

Last, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • My ipod 4th gen went onto a blank white screen and turned off. what should i do?

My iPod 4th gen was dead so I charged it, the apple sign appeared and stayed on the screen for about 10 minutes then went onto a blank white screen and turned off. Now I can't charge it and it has already happened multiple times. what should I do? I also don't know which iOS operating system it is, does that matter?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

  • I have plugged my ipod 4th gen into my computer to reset it, and after agreeing to the trems a window pops up saying " it cannot restore your ipod. check your network settings or try again later. i dont know what to do! please help

hello. my ive been trying to restore my ipod touch 4th gen because it was frozen on the apple logo. i got it to go to the connect to itunes image. i plugged it into my computer to try and restore. i open itunes and it says "you must restore this ipod to use itunes". i click ok and then i accept the terms. after that it shows that it will take 41 mins to restore, but then it says "we connot restore this, there was a problem. it also says to check your network connections or try again" my network connetions are on and its still not working! please help

Disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall during the download and update usually resolves the timeout error.

  • Can't sync iPod Touch 4th Gen after updating to IOS 6.0

I've updated my 64GB iPod Touch 4th Gen to IOS 6.0, but now I can’t sync it with iTunes.
It connects OK, but iTunes isn’t detecting what is already there - it thinks it is full of 48MB of “Other” (rather than music, apps, photos, etc.). In other words iTunes isn’t detecting what is already on the iPod properly (it just knows it’s nearly full of something).
So if I try to sync, iTunes thinks it needs to add all my music, etc. again, and therefore says it’s way over capacity (i.e. 48MB of “other” + 48 MB of all my music, etc.).
    Help! Any suggestions?

    - Try resetting the car system if you can.
    Sometimes this works
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
However. sometimes an iOS update breaks compatibility. In that case you will have to wait for a firmware update to either the care system or the iPod.
