Cannot restore mac from start CD

Hi thanks for reading. I have a black macbook from 2008/09
I'm trying to restore it completely- erase and reinstall mac os x, using the start CD but I cannot get the computer to boot from the CD.
I have tried holding the C, Command, Command and Alt keys, PRAM method, everything I could find. Nothing works.
If you have any ideas on how to fix this, please share them!
Thanks again

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

  • Cannot restore backup from iCloud after rolling back from iOS 8

So, after trying iOS 8 on my iPhone 4s I decided there was too much lag to apps opening, etc.
I downloaded the iOS 7.1.2 firmware and got it back, after backing up to iCloud.
Now all I get - after trying probably 250 times over the past day - is 'Cannot restore backup' from any of the backups from the past three days.
Is it being blocked because iCloud recognises it as not being the latest iOS?
    Any thoughts?

Most likely, some folders were inadvertently excluded from your backups, and as a result you can't restore your data in Recovery, Setup Assistant, or Migration Assistant.
Starting from a fresh installation of OS X, set up a new administrator account and log in. You should now be able to enter Time Machine and restore your user data from a snapshot.* I suggest you do this in two stages. Quit all applications except the Finder before you begin.
Restore all the visible items at the top level of your home folder.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. Enter Time Machine and restore all items in the Library folder. Log out and log back in as soon as the restore is complete.
Any other invisible folders or files at the top level of your home folder that you want to preserve will have to be restored separately. For most users, that isn't necessary.
You'll have to reinstall all third-party applications from scratch, or restore them from another kind of backup, if you have one.
You'll have another problem if this is a new computer, or if you erased the startup volume: Time Machine won't continue your previous snapshot series, but will instead try to begin a new one, starting with a full copy of all files. There might not be enough space on your backup volumes for that. There are different ways of dealing with that situation, depending on your needs. The easiest way is to set your backup drives aside, if possible, until you're sure you'll no longer need the data on them, then erase them and start over. Meanwhile start a new backup on one or more empty storage devices. If that solution isn't workable for you, ask for instructions.
*If you don't see any snapshots in Time Machine, exit the time-travel view and then hold down the option key while selecting
    Browse Other Backup Disks...
from the Time Machine menu, which has an icon that looks like a clock running backwards. Select the backups of your computer by its previous name. If you don't have the Time Machine menu, open the Time Machine preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked
Show Time Machine in menu bar

  • Cannot Restore iPhone from iCloud

I was having some issues with my storage on my iPhone 5 so i decided to restore my phone from a recent backup on iCloud. I used the reset with erase all content and restarted my iPhone. After the phone restarted, signed into iCloud via a sturdy internet connection and started restoring from my most recent iCloud backup. Three minutes into restoring the settings the process halts and a message appears "cannot restore from backup." I have tried restoring from the two other previous backups on iCloud and neither work, they all have the same response.
Eventually I had to restore from iTunes which has a back up from last fall. This is unacceptable.
What do I need to do in order to backup my device from my most recent back up on iCloud?

  • Cannot restore pictures from iPhoto

I reinstalled the OS on my macbook Pro and now I run Mavericks..I used to have an iPhoto application on Mountain Lion, which is now not free... I don't want to buy the app cause I never really liked it anyway, but I cannot restore or access any of my pictures that I have collected and loaded into iPhoto over the course of a year and a half.. they are supposed to be somewhere on the backup but I cannot neither find them nor open the app... What do I do?

download and run Find Any File on your Time Machine drive to search for a file named "ThumbJPGSegment.data" which is a file common to all versions of  iPhoto libraries. Due to the nature of the backup structure it will take a wile.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there's a library  on your Time Machine hard drive FAF will find it.  If you do find the file it will show you where the library is locates so you can restore it via Time Machine as follows:

  • I cannot restore iCal from time machine error message cannot copy iCal as it is needed by os x

I have tried to restore a previous version of iCal from a time machine backup as I keep getting error message "iCal cannot be modified or deleted because it's required by Mac OS X"

You have two library folders: one is at the top level (when you open your hard drive) and the other is in your user directory (when you click on your account name in the Users folder). You want the latter.

  • Removed account - cannot restore messages from Time Machine

    Hello everyone,
I'm using Mail 4.4 on Mac OS 10.6.6. I removed a Mail account today, knowing I could recover all my received messages from the server, but failing to realize that the sent messages were not on the server. On the road, I didn't panic, as I've been using Time Machine for well over a year, and knew all would be well upon my return home.
I returned home, plugged in my Time Machine Backups disk, and Time Machine ran. I then attempted to restore the lost messages, only to find that, in quite Orwellian fashion, Time Machine had retroactively altered all my old Mail folders and had erased any trace (at least as far as I can tell) of the existence of the old account. I cannot find those lost message anywhere, in any backup of Mail, going all the way back.
I've been looking in ~/Library/Mail. Should I be looking elsewhere? I don't think so, because all my current accounts are listed there...along with a new account that I didn't create until today! How could a new account have existed months ago? Answer: It didn't. Something very creepy is going on here.
    Can anyone help???
    Thank you
    Jason

Perhaps it was my late-night, jet-lagged delirium, but for whatever reason, I was able to restore the messages today using the application-specific Time Machine recover tool: made Mail the current application, then ran Time Machine. The messages were there, just as they should have been. (I swear they weren't there last night...)
My apologies if any of you spent any time on this.
    Best,
    Jason

  • Cannot restore Mail from time Machine - permission problems

I am running Lion 10.7.2 and mail 5.1 (all software updates applied)
I know there is a fair bit referencing similar problems but I cannot find my solution.
I inadvertantly deleted a mail account and simply wish to restore the account from my time machine backups.
Time machine has been reliable in the past and my put my faith in it.  However this problem now introduces a fair bit of mistrust which should never happen with a backup system.
I navigate to ~/library/Mail/V2 and then open time machine and select a known good backup (I hope).
I highlight the time machine account folder I want to restore and select "restore".
Time machine starts the restore normally but very quickly comes up with this mesage -
"The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access “.mboxCache.plist”.
(I am logged on as admin)
I have repaired permission on my HD to no avail.
I assume that the message refers to the time machine file but any attempt at changing permisions on the time machine backups fails as "not permitted" (I would not be surprised at this anyway as I dont know how the time machine file system works).
I then copied my complete mail folder to another disk and deleted the original and tried to restore the complete mail folder from the time machine backup.
A similar permissions error message occurs but on a different file.
I am getting nowhere and am rapidly losing faith in time machine - I totally rely on it.
    Can anyone help please.

I deleted the account using mail preferences, so following your advise:
I restored the pref file from the good known backup date.
I also used disk utility to repair the time machine backup volume which showed no problems.
First of all, restoring from time machine according to FAQ 15, the actual messages in the deleted account were indeed restored to the new mailbox that time machine created and could be viewed - that is fine and solves the problem of lost mail.
Almost solved - but what I was trying to do was :
I had two accounts which show under inbox and when you "get mail" the little whirling indicator shows activity which my wife (and I) liked.  After I deleted the second (now unused account) there is no more indicator when "getting mail" and it is not obvious that anything is actually happening.  Any mail received will show up under mail activity but if there is none we all just sit there with no feedback until it "beeps".
There was also the other issue of maybe wanting to get back all mail for the deleted account (which you solved).
I can of course recreate the account as a new one but I thought time machine would be able to restore the mail system back to where it was (as it should) - it seems it may not be able to which is not nice as in "what else will fail one day that I dont know about".  To restore "as was" is why I tried to restore just the "missing" folder in ~/library/mail/v2 but keep running into these permission problems.
Time machine was the best backup system I have seen in over 30 years in computing but if it now "doesnt" under all circumstances it becomes useless and we will have to go back to manual or other backup systems. Surely Apple will fix it - a backup and restore system has to completely reliable or not at all.
I thank you for your help  and, as I say, there is no real urgency as mail items can actually be recovered - it would be nice to be able to restore "as it was" however.

  • Cannot Restore Client from WSE 2012R2 Backup

I have just setup a home server using WSE 2012R2. Everthing seems to be working well. Clients backing up OK. One machine has just about maxed out its 256GB SSD (backups have just stopped because of insufficient space) so I thought I'd replace it with a 512GB
SSD from another machine. So following directions I created a USB boot stick. No problem. However I simply cannot get the client to boot from the stick despite many tries, resetting the bios to boot from USB CDROM (which instructions seem to favor), USB HDD
etc., The USB works I know that.
So I thought I'd try another approach. I installed Win7 Pro on the new HD and connected the machine to the Server, then setup the restore environment and did a restore from the dashboard of the client machine. No Go! Files are copied to a "Restore"
Folder, and the machine fails to copy 30 files because the file name string would be too long. Then it quits, leaving me with 239 GB of files in a folder instead of a restore. This is not helping...
So much for doing backups! Any ideas out there?

I am restoring a Lenovo X201 laptop with Win 7 Pro installed on Drive C (boot), trying to migrate from 256 GB to 512 GB. The WSE 2012R2 equipped Server has been doing backups of the C drive for the last week or so as well as another half-dozen machines.
Searching technet, I found a guide (http://technet.microsoft.com/library/jj713516.aspx). Also, just following the Dashboard instructions(Devices> Client Computer Backup Tasks) indicates that a USB stick with the  recovery key would allow access to
the server's backups for the machine. The problem seemed to be that the machine would not boot from the stick. I tried re-installing several times, different bios settings etc., and never could get the stick to boot.
The other recovery method, again as indicated in the Technet article above or the "Client Computer Backup Task" (3rd tab), is to use the "Client Restore Service". The instructions are a
bit vague..(How can you restore to a machine you can't boot?). Also when I eventually tried (after I booted the machine with a Win7 Pro disk) all it did was copy the entire drives worth of files into a single "Restore" folder. Not very helpful.
I also had image backups of the drive that I had made using Acronis 2014 onto an external drive. So I made a recovery CD there and booted the machine figuring I'd restore the image. However after loading properly, the program would freeze preventing any
recovery actions. I had a go-round with then, downloaded the latest recovery media etc., no dice.
So I finally solved the problem of upgrading to the 512 GB drive by downloading EaseUS's free workstation backup software and imaging one drive to the other using their recovery media. I never heard of EaseUS before. They are located in the Chinese city
of Chendu. The recovery media booted up the first time, I imaged the drive over in a few hours and was done.
I think i'm going to buy the software for all my workstations and the Server too. AS A FOOTNOTE. After all was back to normal, I checked the Client Computer backups on the server. It said no backups were being done because the backup database was corrupted
(did not say that when I started all this) So I checked and repaired the database overnight and it is working again.
However, this machine and the 15 TB of drives is brand new, and has been working for about 2 weeks. I have lost confidence in the Servers usefulness and reliability for doing backups that are worthwhile. I'm very happy I did this before I was in crisis mode
    trying to recover valuable data.

  • Cannot restore backup from icloud

My problem is like i said on topic,i can't restore my backup from icloud

To restore it, you need to do Settings > General > Reset > Erase all content and settings, then start the iPhone setup process.  Once you enter your WiFi and Apple ID and password, you will be asked how to set up your iPhone.  iCloud backup will be a choice (assuming the same Apple ID created it).

  • Cannot Restore Image From External USB

    Hello,
I am trying to restore an image I made from a Surface Pro 2, a Windows 8, and a Windows 8.1 computer and I get the same results from all 3 computers.  The backup is successful on all 3 computers, but I am not able to restore the image.  When I
try to restore, Windows says it cannot find an image.  I tried it on an external Seagate 500 GB HD, an Hitachi 3TB external HD, a blank HD in a USB enclosure, and a Seagate 3TB external HD.   The only time Windows was able to see the image
was when I copied it to the Seagate 3TB drive.  Does there have to be something configured on the drive before Windows 8 can see the image?

  • Cannot restore backup from itunes

Help   I went to the Apple Store to ask them to fix my iphone 5's power button last weekend and they gave me a replacement phone. After I took it home, I tried to restore the phone using iTunes (I created a backup from my phone the day before I visited Apple store).
And now itunes is telling me that it cannot retore the backup because it exceeded the size of my phone. I don't know what to do... Any ideas? I want to get my photos/videos/messages/contacts back.
If I knew this would happen, I would have never gone to the Apple Store in the first place

Hi, there are iphone backup extractors on the market that will extract your backup data, give it a google, but you will be able to restore manually only specific data.

  • Cannot restore email from TM

I need to restore my email sent items from Time machine.
I click on the sent folder in Mail then click on TM.
Then I pic the restore day and choose even just 1 email to restore (any email).
The TM screen returns to the desktop and mail just locks up.
I have tried 2 different machines (using IMAP Mail) and they both do the same. I have rebooted the Macs and still the same.
    Any ideas?

Can you confirm that it was located on your ON MY MAC folder -> Time Machine -> Recovered Messages?
That is how it has appeared on my recoveries.
