Cannot restore Windows after using Rescue & Recovery

I used R&R once and after doing so, I reboot and come up with error message saying "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
   \WINDOWS\system32\c_1252,nls
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."
Of course there is no original Setup CD-ROM with this computer.  I tried a Windows XP Professional CD from Microsoft and it cannot see any hard drive on my computer, so it will not work.
Is there a way to start over and re-install Windows??

hey Bernie
missing drivers.. not th end of the world. dont give up on Lenovo yet. i installed xp yesterday and found the drivers the ibm-lenovo support site. fill in you laptop specs.. i.e. model, OS, etc. and you should get a list of your drivers..
After i had th files i thought they didnt work but wat they do is extract you drivers to your local disk.
Thers another site, sorry forgot to bookmark it but this one was sufficient in my case. Hope lenovos not in the trash yet

  • Cannot Restore Windows 7

A relative came to me, asking for help. The notebook is a HP Pavillon dm4-2040ez.
I found out that HP warranty was just over and the harddisk was broken. So we ordered a new SSD and I installed a clean version of Windows 7 from my DVD, but did not activate it (30 days time to do so). I recommended to either buy Windows 8 or order the recovery DVDs. Windows worked fine so far. Owner decided to order the recovery disks.
After they arrived, I noticed that the optical drive was broken too. But the owner doesn't really need it, so I copied the first recovery DVD to an USB stick (on my PC) and made it bootable and then booted the HP machine from the USB stick. That worked fine but after booting I just get the progress bar ("Windows is loading files" or something like that) then some scripts start. Then the machine boots again - and everything repeats.
So I cannot restore Windows that way. What's the problem? Obviously not the hardware, as it worked with my installation before. Do the recovery DVDs require to start them from an optical drive or what? Or was the disk maybe broken somehow? Any other ideas?
    This question was solved.

    Hi:
The OEM key works on the retail Vista and W7 downloads, not like XP where you need the OEM disk to match the OEM key.
Follow the steps below and you will be all set.
Use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link  below. You need a DVD or a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
Use the 25 character windows 7 product key to activate your installation.
    http://download.cnet.com/Windows-7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool/3000-18513_4-10972600.html
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below. Download the applicable version of Windows 7 that is on your product key (Home Premium, Pro, or Ultimate).

You can't make a bootable usb flash drive from one disk.
What will you do when the system asks you to insert another disk?
The recovery disks are image files and they are looking for the same size hard drive to install on.

  • Why i cannot restore back after software update?, why i cannot restore back after software update?, why i cannot restore back after software update?

Why i cannot restore back after update software?

    What does "restore back" mean?
If it means go backwards to some earlier version of iOS, then Apple has never allowed that.
If it means reload the contents of your iPhone after doing a software update, you should be able to do that.

  • Cannot close iTunes after use.

Since the last 2 update I cannot close iTunes after use. With 7.7.1 I even have to shutdown my computer completly. Downgrading does no works becuase my iPod is updated. Can anybody help.

The top 2 fixes for this seem to be
    1) Update your NOD32 AV software from the ESET site, if you are using that.
    2) If you don't have an iPhone or iTouch, uninstall the AppleMobileDevice from Control Panel > Add/Remove programs

  • Restoration of Lenovo T500 to new hard drive using Rescue & Recovery

I bought a new hard drive and I have been having a frustrating time trying to migrate the image of my hard disk to the new drive. When I bought my T500, it came with Windows Vista Business 64, but I have since downgraded it to Windows XP Pro.
Up to now, I was faithfully using Norton Ghost 14 to back up my drive to my USB Western Digital MyBook Mirror Edition 1TB drive. However, I get errors when I try to restore the image to my new drive (and I will be posting that issue to Norton's forum).
While I have not completely given up on Norton Ghost, I decided I might be able to restore the image using the Rescue & Recovery software. I downloaded and installed R&R 4.21.0016.00. After I installed it, I backed up my system to the MyBook Mirror Edition.
I then shut down the computer and put in the new hard drive (a Western Digital Scorpio Black WD5000BEKT). I used a disc that I burned from the ThinkVantage Create Recovery Media utility to boot the machine. While the environment loads just fine, it does not detect my USB hard drive. NOTE: I didn't make my USB drive bootable, I only stored the backup files there.
I tried going into the PC Doctor utility and discovered that there is an "unidentified" USB device under the mouse section, which I presume is the MyBook.
I have hunted high and low for an answer to this both on Lenovo and Western Digital's web sites, but I can't seem to come up with a reason why my drive is not visible to R&R, or a way to load the WD drivers into this recovery environment. I found http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkVantage-Technologies/Rescue-and-Recovery-does-not-recognize-USB-driv..., and I followed the instructions - there is a minus sign next to the USB boot device in the bios. However, saving the bios and rebooting the computer (as the post suggested) does nothing to change that setting.
I have tried upgrading the bios to the latest version, but still no luck detecting the USB drive.
I am thinking about resorting to buring a backup of my entire system to DVDs and then restoring using the DVD drive. However, since my current backup is 60GB, I imagine that will take 15 discs.
Whether that fixes my immediate problem or not (that is, transferring to my new drive), I still don't have an answer for a long term solution in case of hard drive failure. Ghost is not working with my current configuration. And if I use R&R for backup, it will do me no good if I cannot get it to connect to my USB drive to recover. Furthermore, as far as I can tell there is no way to burn an existing restoration point to DVD - meaning I would have absolutely no way to restore if my hard drive failed.
I have been working on this migration for 3 full days already, and since I had my system images backed up I thought that this would be a trivial task. Any suggestions at this point would be welcomed.

I'm experiencing the same problem. I wanted to restore single files from an USB disk. Two larger file (500MB each) went through that process quite fast (3 minutes). A folder with many small files takes forever.
What's strange is that my notebook hard drive is at 100% activity all the time, while the USB disk is hardly read.

  • Blue Checkered Screen after using the Recovery Disks

I have a Compaq Presario SR2034NX XP Media Center computer. I followed the instructions and installed all the recovery disks. The screen then said to remove all disks and that it's going to reboot several times to finish the installation. During this process I got a blue checkered screen. I'm not sure what to do at this point. I took a picture of what the screen looks like and I'm enclosing a link to the picture here.
Click below to see the picture of what my screen looks like after using the restore disks:
    http://bit.ly/ifajT6
Thank you for your help and time!

I run into the same problem with fresh installation of W7 Pro on T530 with 1TB samsung disk.
    This solution worked for me:
Running check for updates will trigger this error message:
“Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.”
    Solution:
    1.    Go to Administrative Tools/Services, and stop the Windows Update service.
    2.    Then go to the folder c: /Windows/SoftwareDistribution and delete all of the files and folders.
    3.    Then go back to Services and restart the Windows Update service which will recreate all of those folders again.
    4.    Then manually run the Update Service and everything should work.

  • Cannot restore settings after updating to iOS 5

I have upgraded successfully to iOS 5, well almost, because just after the upgrade finished, I wen't through the settings (language, country, WI-FI) and was then given a choice to set as a new device or restore from backup. Since my backup is on my computer I chose restore from iTunes.
But restoring fails, and this happens for both my iPhone 4 and iPad 2. I've been given a number of errors (-19 or -50) and sometimes it just says "iTunes cannot restore iPad because the backup session failed".
This happens on both my iPad and iPhone no matter which backup file I choose.
With the iPhone I've tried to put it in recovery mode and reset to factory settings, but I still can't restore it.
Anyone else with this problem, and does anyone know what to do?

    READ THIS!!!!!
For anybody having these issues here is what I did.
First of all, BACKUP your original backup, yes a backup of a backup. First of all make hidden files visible, at your explorer go to tools>folderoptions>view and show hidden files and folders. If you cant find the tools at your window press alt and a toolbar will appear. The file is located in C/users/YOURACCOUNT/appdata/roaming/applecomputer/mobilesync/backup.
Again this is just a precaution.
Now if you some sort of anitvirus program, ESPECIALLY if it is AVAST. Turn it off! For some reason it is conflicting with restoring with the backup.
Restart Itunes and plugin your iphone, it will probably still come up with the (-50) error. Ignore this! Now right click your iphone under devices at the left side of itunes. Then choose then do restore from backup and wait. Hopefully your Iphone screen will say restore in progress!
Now I just hope this helps someone as I was freaking out because I was updating my bros iphone. And he had a lot of saves and photos etc.
If you have ANY questions please ask as I know how frustrating this error is.

  • Hard drive not booting after use of Recovery Manager on USB

The hard drive on my newphew's  HP G62t-350 CTO Notebook was failing. I was able to create a recovery USB in the Recovery Manager. I installed a new 120 GB SSD. The original hard drive was larger, can't remember now but 250 or 500 GB. I know the Recovering the System after the Hard Drive is Replaced (Windows 7) says "To avoid problems, install a hard drive as large or larger than the replaced hard drive," but that's a question for later.
Computer booted fine from USB (in fact, is set to boot from USB if present by default). Recovery Manager starts. I choose minimal install. It goes through the process of partitioning the SSD and copying files. Then says to remove external media and reboot, computer will reboot several times during the process, blah, blah, blah. I pull out the USB and reboot, but after POST I get "No bootable media present".
If I try to reboot leaving the USB in, it boots to USB and we're back at the beginning. I am able to confirm with a rescue disk that the SSD has one NTFS partition that has had Windows files copied to it, and a large amount of unallocated space. (Something like 60%/40%.)
    So:
How do I make the hard drive bootable, and if it were bootable, would the recovery process complete?
What's going on with the partitions? Is it creating the recovery partition first, and then after boot the recovery partition installs the OS? If so, I might have to abandon this process because since I'm moving to smaller storage, I don't want to devote half of the drive to a recovery partition.
Would official recovery media help? A tech told me that it would, but was not able to explain to my satisfaction why the USB I created with Recovery Manager didn't work, so I am suspicious about the claim that media created by HP as opposed to media created by me using HP's own software would be any better, and since the computer is out of warranty I don't feel like spending $30+ to find out.
    This question was solved.

Most persons that have installed an SSD that was smaller than the factory drive have been unable to use any HP Recovery Media with the SSD.
As an alternative, if you can still read the 25-digit Windows product key on the Microsoft COA affixed to the bottom the computer, you can install Windows 7 Home using this key. Please see "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" for instructions on how to download Windows 7, create the installation media, and install Windows 7 using the 25 digit product key from the Microsoft COA on your computer. Please note that this installation will not have any of the HP customizations or HP value-added that was original installed on your computer. Also note that you will need to download and install most of the drivers from the HP G62t-350 CTO Notebook PC Drivers page.
Links to Windows 7 SP1 can be found HERE and HERE.
Direct link to the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool. Use this tool to create a bootable DVD or USB Flash Drive from the Windows .ISO

    Fixed it.
It is OS based problem, since MAC Lione store application state when closing
    it.
    Solution Steps:
1- Move to trash OOo from application folder.
2- The Library folder is hidden by default so use chflags nohidden ~/Library/
    command to unhide it.
3- Move to trash all files which contains OOo in there name from users Library
    folder and sub folders.
    4- Reinstall OOo.
    5- Launch Working

  • Cannot restore iPad after incorrect password lock

I have incorrectly entered my passcode into my my iPad to the point where it is now telling me "iPad disabled connect to iTunes." But when I attempt to connect the iPad to my computer I am presented with another error message on iTunes which says "iTunes could not connect to "iPad" because the iPad is locked and in lost mode." the iPad is not in Lost Mode as I have checked via my iPhone so I don't know why this error is presented. To add to the problem, if I attempt to Restore the iPad using Recovery Mode I am presented with another error message that the network connection has timed out, hence the iPad has now become completely unusable.

    Hey DTl315,
At that point you will need to put your iPad into recovery mode and then use iTunes to restore it. Take a look at the article below to walk you through this. If you have a back up in iTunes or in iCloud, you can put that back on after the restore done.
Forgot passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled

  • Windows 7 from Rescue&Recovery

Hi, I have a lenovo g530 laptop, got it with windows vista 32-bit operating system, I would like to upgrade my vista to windows 7. my problem is that I don't know how to make windows 7 load up from rescue and recovery instead of vista.
Do I just need to download the newer version of Rescue&Recovery or to copy the partition somehow...?
Please help me with this one.. Thank you!

I do not think it can be done.
If anyone knows how, they might get a ton of kudos!
A good method is to get a external HD, and use Win 7's built in
disk imaging software to back up to external.
You could use a partition on the internal HD, but that is not as disaster proof.
If you have NO intention of getting Vista back in the future, you can
re-partition the HD when installing Win 7.
If you want to have that option, create recovery disks in Vista, and then
install Win 7 in the same C:\ partition as Vista. Don't resize partition!
Rescue button will not work, but you will be able to recover Vista from recovery disks.

I use new windows for grouping taks and tabs in each taks. If browser crash then after restoring windows is in random order.

Why do you doubt that a particular driver may be causing crashes? This is not an unusual thing. Do you have any evidence or reasons for dismissing this (e.g. Apple's touchpad drivers are user-mode)?
Regarding the issue, I am experiencing the same problem. After upgrading the trackpad driver I started getting BSODs and other odd behavior.
Yes, it's an Apple driver issue, as are some of the audio problems Windows is having. The audio noise/corruption is being caused by Apple's wireless driver. Some users are reporting good results by replacing Apple's wireless driver with a downloaded Windows broadcom driver. Sorry I don't have a link but it's been posted on this forum.
I believe the OP mentioned several applications were upgraded.

  • Cannot recover Windows 8.1 from recovery disks

    Hi
I have a Windows 8.1 laptop (recovery disks are for Windows 8, see product details in image 1).
My laptop mouse left click suddenly started acting as right click, the computer froze and started making a noise, and when I restarted it using the power button it got stuck in the automatic repair loop. I tried all the options F8, F9, F10 and nothing worked. Then I did a disk check by pressing F2 and it failed (see image 2).
Following that I used my recovery disks and I got the message - destination drive not connected (see image 3).
Is my hard disk corrupted and need to be replaced? I am in UK but I bought the laptop in India.
Also, if I am able to use the recovery disks, I'll get W8 and not W8.1, which is what I had. How can I recover to W8.1 directly?
    Thanks

Short DST:Fail > means the hard drive has failed and will have to be replaced. You can use your Recovery Discs on a new hdd. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as original.
If the laptop shipped with Windows 8 there is no way to directly recover to Windows 8.1.

  • Cannot recover the notebook using the Recovery disk

    Hello.
I was wanting to restart my Toshiba Laptop, and I inserted the 'Recovery' CD, and pressed F8 and went to the help menu, and when the list came up I clicked on the one that said about restarting my PC and losing all data, and then I clicked on 'Restart' and the computer restarted and the disc was in but it just came back on as normal.
What do I need to do? I tried all the other options and they all worked as normal.
What do I need to do? Do I have to press something else?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
    ~Confused~

To be honest after reading your posting I am more confused then you.
Can you please tell us which notebook do you have?
F8 and disc inside the optical disc drive. Sorry but something is wrong there.
Either you can install Vista again using image saved on HDD (F8 option Repair my computer) or use Toshiba recovery installations media. There is no sense to use both at the same time.
    Please more info needed.
