Cannot retrieve email

I recently setup Mail to use with a new POP email account. I find that I can send messages using Mail with no problem, but I cannot receive any email messages other than the ones sent by my ISP. There were three of these waiting for me when I opened my Inbox for the first time, and I've received one since. However, I see I have several emails from other people in my Inbox when I open it with web mail; some I've opened, some I haven't. I can't download any of them with Mail.
I've confirmed my POP & SMTP server info, user name, password. I've created test accounts, which I then deleted after they didn't work; I deleted the "messages already downloaded" folder in Home>Library>Mail. I also deleted the Mail plist in the Preferences folder and set up my account from scratch again. I tried pinging the POP server and didn't get any pings back, but I think I am connecting with the server because once I entered my password incorrectly and the server rejected it until I re-entered it correctly. And, as I said, I have been getting the mail from my ISP.
I'm using Mail 1.3.11. Usually when I click Get Mail, I see the message, "connecting to (server name)..." This goes on for about a minute and then it just stops. A few times I've seen, "Opening mailbox..." and that goes on for a minute and then stops. I've wondered if this is a timeout issue (though it only gives up after about 30 seconds) but I can't see a timeout setting anywhere in Preferences.
I'm puzzled. Suggestions, anyone?

If you have another email account, try setting that up on your phone and try receiving an email.  If you can receive email with another account, then the problem's not with your iPhone; if you can't send anything then the problem is with your phone.
If you either don't have another email account or you can't receive any email the you'll have to restore your iPhone with a backup created before you started having trouble.

    If this is dot mac or Mobile me you can still use IMAP eMail in the iCloud.
    Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
    MAKE A NEW ACCOUNT - DO NOT TRY TO ALTER YOUR EXISTING ACCOUNT.
    I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
    You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
    iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
    On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
        •    Server name: imap.mail.me.com
        •    SSL Required: Yes
        •    Port: 993
        •    Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
        •    Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
        •    Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
        •    SSL Required: Yes
        •    Port: 587
        •    SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
        •    Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
        •    Password: Your iCloud password
    Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.

  • Can send Exchange email but cannot retrieve email iOS 7.1.2

    Hi,
    I'm using iPhone 5, running on iOS 7.1.2.
    After I configured Exchange email server settings on the phone, there was an alert that said "Cannot Get Mail. The connection to the server failed". The server settings are standard for all our company employees; my userID and password were correct. I could not retrieve any email, contacts or calendar items. However, I was ABLE to SEND outgoing emails including attachments.
    I tried the following:
    1. Reset the phone by selecting 'Erase all data and settings' and re-configured. Same issue.
    2. Restored the phone by connecting the phone to computer using iTunes and re-configured. Same issue.
    3. Got my service provider to reset my SIM subscriber settings at their backend server and I tried 'Reset Network Settings' on my phone and then re-configured. Same issue.
    4. Borrowed my colleague's iPhone 5s and configured my userID and password, ISSUE SOLVED.
    5. Borrowed another colleague's iPhone 5 and configured my userID and password, ISSUE SOLVED.
    6. Tried configuring my userID and password on my iPhone 5, same issue as before: cannot retrieve mail but can send mail.
    From the above steps, I believe we can rule out telco setting issue, exchange email server setting issue and my email profile setting issue. Clearly, my phone is the problem.
    Any suggestions for solutions will be greatly appreciated.

    I feel so stupid. I realized that my Outlook mail box was full and was not allowing me to send emails until I had deleted messages from my account.
    It's working fine now!

    CAN NOT retrieve email this morning. It just keeps trying without success. It's been appox. 3 weeks and I'm still having trouble with deleting emails. Verizon has increased the cost of the internet and has lowered their standards. As a retiree, I'm enbrassed to say I worked for this company for 25 yrs. Get it together Verizon.

  • Cannot retrieve email from Mail account on iCloud

    SInce Tuesday, Sept 11th I have been unable to retrieve my messages on my iCloud mail account.  Mail doesn't work on my MacBook Pro or any of my devices (iphone or ipad).  When I try to log on to iCloud I can see my calendar and contacts, however I cannot access my mail.  When I ran Connection Doctor I get the following message:
    "Trying to log in to this iCloud IMAP account failed.  Verify that the username and password are correct.  Also verify that the server supports Apple Token authentication.  If it does not, choose an appropriate authentication setting in the Advanced tab of the Account preferences."
    Mail continues to place this email account in an offline position moments after I click to take it online.
    I've read some reports of others having this problem occur on Tuesday as well.  Is this an iCloud issue?  Please advise.

    You can try deleting the account on your iphone and setting it up again.

    I am trying to retreieve my email from my company, I have no problem connecting using IOS7 on both my iPad and iPhone but cannot connect from my iMac or Macbook Pro? I have spoken with our IT deprt but still no joy, however, I downloaded TouchDown (Beta) from NitroDesk yesterday and believe it or not I downloaded all my mail on my desktop! Happy days you might think...yes to a degree but as it is still in beta it is very limited, but my question is, how come this email client can connect but Apple Mail or Outlook cannot? Same settings...

    Well TouchDown is ceratinly downloading all my mail okay, but like I said previously it is still in beta and is quite limited. I was hoping someone was aware of maybe another email client that would also work like TouchDown but with better features...
    I will have another chat with our IT department next week but to be honest its very political at our company so I am not going to hold my breath. Thanks for the replies thus far.

    Starts up like the first time you buy a new Mac, but after filling in all that info again, you should have access to the computer and the other Users & files will still be there... though I was just thinking, this new User probably shouldn't be the same name as an existing one.

    Though it's unlikely to be wrong if things were set up properly in the first place, as a check go to Mail Preferences>Accounts and check that the server setting for IMAP (incoming) is imap.mail.me.com (not just mail.me.com).
    Your next step either way would be to go to System Preferences>iCloud and sign out, then sign back in again. (You can ignore warnings about data disappearing - your calendars etc. will disappear when you sign out but reappear when you sign back in).

    Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.   • Cannot send email via ActiveSync when user connect from Internet (Exchange 2010 SP3 RU5)

    Hi All. 
    This is the first time I encounter this kind of issue, whenever user connect from the internet they cannot send email from their Phone or Windows Mail App, but they can retrieve email 
    But when they connect from Internal Network they can send email. I already test ActiveSync from internet using www.testexchangeconnectivity.com and it pass all tests. 
    I also check the Firewall and all the necessary ports already opened (we even open all ports) , the default TTL on the firewall 3600 second. 
    From what I read ActiveSync use some kind of HTTP POST or in MS terminology "PING" command, but still have no idea what kind of configuration that should be made to the Firewall so it can pass this "PING" command. Because from what I
    see in Android Logcat the problem always related to this PING command

  • Can't see msgs in UWC / reconstruct fails with cannot retrieve message uid

    I have restored several email accounts into a test email account. I'm trying to move some of the .msg files around so that they are easier to find. I have created some new folders and when I move the messages into the folder, I cannot see them in the web client. If I run reconstruct, I get

    Normally, after restoring email, I have to recreate the mail folders (either via mboxutil or manually via the UWC or a client), then run reconstruct. Even then, often the messages will show as 'deleted' until I either move them to a different folder or go into the UWC and mark them as undeleted. At this point, I can't see the recently restored messages at all in the UWC. They are on the server. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    In general, manually moving files around inside the store like this should be discouraged.
    reconstruct is telling you something is wrong:

    cannot retrieve message uid 1286The first line is to be expected based on what you have done. The store.idx indicates there are no messages in the folder. But it found 41 .msg files. So it is going to rebuild store.idx to fix that.
    But then there is some problem with accessing the .msg files. Possibilities would include:
    - wrong ownership/permissions?
    - the .msg file being in the wrong NN subdir ??
    If those guesses do not lead to anything, try truss on the reconstruct command to see what happens when reconstruct tries to open those files.
