Cannot retrive music from ipod.

I have an ipod that a friend had put some music from his itunes library onto. When I tried to add it to my library it would not let me. Am I not able to put this music onto my library? If so, then why/how did the ipod let my friend put his music onto my ipod. It now wants to delete all my music if I try to sync my ipod to my library.... =( I really need these songs off of my ipod and onto my computer!!
Also I have a friend who had an ipod that she has music on, but doesnt have the original computer that her music library is on. I tried to open a new desktop in hopes that she would be able to transfer her ipod music to a new library, but it also wanted to delete all of her music off of it. So is there a way to get her music off the nano?? She does not have the cds, or the files or the orignal computer (it was left in another state). Is she stuck with this music on the ipod?

I found the solution! The problem is that windows tries to keep drive letters reserved for certain drives. Eg, Windows is keeping the E: drive reserved for my USB thumb drive. The ipod really only works when it's on E:.
Step by step, here's how to fix in Windows XP:
1. Unplug your iPod, shut down iTunes
2. Plug in a thumb drive, verify it mounts to drive E:
3. Go to Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management
4. Click on Storage\Disk Management
5. In the upper pane, right click on the thumb drive (E:)
6. Select "Change Drive Letter and Paths..."
7. Select your drive, click on "Change..."
8. Select another letter, like "G:"
9. Click OK, OK.
10. Close Computer Management, Close Administrative Tools
11. Start up iTunes
12. Plug in your iPod
13. iTunes will ask to update your iPod
14. Follow the prompts, iPod will be updated and reboot
15. After update completes, undock and redock your iPod
16. iTunes will now see your iPod

  • Cannot delete music from iPod

    Hi all,
I have a 32Gb iPod Touch. My library makes it necessary to only load music that can fill the iPod, as I have more music that that.
I attempted to delete my iPod library, which seemed to work initially. BUT, not all the music was deleted - 4 albums remained. I then did the drastic action of Resetting the iPod back to the manufacturer's original setup.
The 4 albums STILL appear (?). I have been able to add music from iTunes OK, but I cannot find a way to remove the albums I don't require.
I'd appreciate any help/instructions that can solve the [problem.
Many thanks in advance for any help.
    Bazza

Thanks IIIaass for your prompt help.
After I used the iPod Touch to delete all of the system, and then reinstalled, I wound up with 4 albums still remaining on the Touch. No way could I remove them.  I used iTunes Music for installing albums on the Touch using the small box that shows what appliances are running. All went in without a problem, and all played.
The result is that the 4 albums are still there, and I can't figure out how to remove them. I would have thought that a total reinstall on the Touch would have eliminated all the music - the remaining 4 albums were a small number of the 60 or so albums that were on it. How they were removed and these 4 still stayed is the mystery.
I was installing music via the Apple Mac via Finder, where all my music comes into (I don't use iTunes Store). I highlighted the tracks of the album and dragged them to the Touch via the small box on the top L/H side. All went in, and appeared on the play list - by artist, album and tracks. It was only when I looked into the Community Help that I was aware that one could choose the Touch by highlighting the tracks in iTunes, and then dragging them up to the top L/H side, where all of a sudden the Touch icon was show, together with any other icons for other players. No hint anywhere I could find that mentioned this method. Using it was much quicker, and the 60-70 albums went in with no problems.
With all the above, I'm still at a standstill in trying to eliminate the 4 albums that still reside.
If there's any other options you might recommend I'd be really pleased.
    Regards
    Barrie

  • Cannot delete music from ipod touch, tried everything suggested thus far.

I have tried several suggestions up to this point and nothing has worked. It is my understanding that everything in My Music, (on my PC) transfers to the iTunes program, either manually or automaticlly. It is also my understanding that if I add or delete music from iTunes, that it will automatically be added or deleted on my iPod Touch, (4th gen). Well, none of this has proven to be true...at best, it is sporatic and frustrating. Any new ideas out there?

Thanks for the help....I tried your suggestion, but I am still experiencing inconsistent results.
    Buy doing what?...
You need to be more specific about what you are trying. "I've tried several suggestions" tells us nothing. You've tried my suggestion (but I made two - dependant upon what you are doing), but you haven't told me how you are managing your iPod, are you using Sync or manually managing? Without that knowledge, everything else is meaningless.
If you are using Sync, and you have selected *Sync only ticked songs and videos,* then un-ticking a song and then performing a Sync will remove the song. So what are you doing?

  • Cannot delete music from iPod nano (latest generation).  Have already selected "Manually Manage music and videos" but delete is unavailable from right click or Edit.

I have done everything I've seen recommended for deleting music (jncluding "manually manage").  Thanks for the assistance!!!

Did you Apply the change after selecting (checking the box for) Manually manage music and videos?
With the latest iTunes, if the sidebar is hidden, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
In the sidebar, select the iPod under DEVICES.  Click the toggle (to the left of iPod) to drop down the iPod's content list, indented under iPod.  Click on Music there.  Over to the right, the list of songs on the iPod is shown.  You can select songs there, right click on them, and select Delete from the contextual menu.  You can also select songs there, go up to the menu bar, and select Delete under Edit.  You can also select songs there, and just press the Delete key on the keyboard.
If you want to use automatic syncing, which is far more convenient than the manual method, and easily manage content on the iPod (add and remove songs), please post back.

  • Cannot delete music from ipod nano if not connected!

I couldn´t believe it´s not possible to delete files from my ipod nano 4G when not connected to my PC !! I use it to record talks (w/ XtremeMac´s MicroMemo) and I needed to make some room to record important talks in a seminar and I found it´s impossible to delete some downloaded music! It´s unbelieveable such simple and useful feature is not implemented yet even in this (otherwise excellent) newest generation ipod!!!
Would it be likely a future firmware with this feature?

"Would it be likely a future firmware with this feature?"
No one here would know what future upgrades Apple have planned and they don't as a rule pre-announce what will be contained in Firmware updates. You can leave your feedback/feature request at this link: Apple Product Feedback

As you may have already found out that while we can transfer music from iTunes to an iPod, we cannot transfer music from iPod to iTunes.
You need to move your music from your iPod to your new iTunes and one of the ways that you can do this is with the help of a third party software.
Please read [*_This Discussion Thread_*|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10570955#10570955] and pay particular attention to the post from Zevoneer. In his post all available software is listed which you can use to accomplish what you want. Most of the software is free. Good Luck.

  • I cannot transfer music from my PC to my Ipod

I cannot transfer music from my PC to my Ipod, i can see my Ipod, and I tried to drag and drop but it wont work

Make sure the "Sync Music Tab" is checked.  If it isn't, when you check it, it will prompt you that you can only sync to one iTunes library at a time.  The iPod will have to be erased to sync with the new library.

  • HT204088 can we manage our account, so my daughter cannot purchase music from her Ipod?

Can we manage our account, so my daughter cannot purchase music from her Ipod ?

You can hide the iTunes store app on her iPod via Settings > General > Restrictions > iTunes 'off' - that will remove the app and therefore stop hre buying things from it.

  • Is there a way to put music from ipod into computer?

Ok, my problem is that I have not got any trace of music on my computer and my music is on my ipod Classic. It is an 80GB one. I want to know if you can still put new music on it without deleting what is already on it. Or, if there is a way to get the music off it and into the computer. I cannot do the method suggested in this link though http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329?locale=en_AU so any help would be appreciated.
If you have a solution if you could e-mail me at: ***********@**********.** (no 'e' after the 'w' as I was a bad speller all those years ago).
    Thanks

    Copy from iPod to PC
It is important not to allow your iPod to sync with an empty library. If it is set to synchronise automatically you will get a message saying your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to sync – it is important to press cancel as syncing with an empty library erases all music from your iPod.
You can also prevent auto sync by holding down shift & ctrl as you plug in your iPod and keeping the keys held down until the iPod appears in iTunes.
Once you are connected, you need to set your iPod to manage music manually.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1535
If you have an iPod with iTunes Store purchases on it, you can use it to copy your purchases to other authorized computers.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
However this is not allowed for other music.
This MacMuse tip tells you how to copy music from your iPod using Windows Explorer, but it is a bit fiddly:
    http://discussions.apple.com/messageview.jspa?messageID=797432
Otherwise you can use third party software to manage the transfer, there are a variety of programs out there, some free and some that will copy ratings and counts as well as the music files. Here is a selection, check them out and see what suits you.

  • How do i transfer photos and music from ipod to computer?

    Hi everyone,
a couple of weeks ago my computer crashed and i lost everything, i don't know how to put the music and photos that are on my ipod back onto my computer, can anyone help me? i am especially bothered about the photos, as they are the only copy of them that i have (the other copy was on my computer) and they are quite sentimental, i really don't want to lose them! I have seen other people say to plug in the ipod, go to my computer and unhide the music and photos, i think i have found the music but it's all under weird names and my computer won't let me open it. With the photos, all that i can find is two folders called 'photo database' and 'thumbs', but again, i can't open them, i just get a message up saying 'windows cannot open this file' and 'windows needs to know where this file was made before it can open it.' if anybody can help me then it would be much appriciated, i really don't want to lose my stuff. many thanks in advance x

These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)
Copying music from iPod to computer (a primer on various methods and software)
Copying Songs from Your iPod to a Mac or PC (resource for 3rd party software)
    iPodRip Software
    PodUtil Software
    YamiPod Software (Mac & Windows)
    PodPlus Software (Windows)
    TuneJack Software (Windows)
Senuti (Mac OS X v10.3 or higher Recovery Utility)
XPlay (Windows software For Music Recovery &/or Cross-Platform Functionality)
XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
Extremely Simple Method: (just to recover the song files – may not work on a Mac)
    1 - Open iTunes
    2 - Edit=>Preferences=>’Advanced/General’ tab
2a --- Select ‘Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library’: checked
2b --- Select ‘Keep iTunes Music folder organized’: checked
2c --- Click OK to store changes
3 - Attach your iPod to the PC and hold down the ‘Shift+Ctrl’ keys until the iPod is fully recognized (this will defeat the auto-sync process)
4 - If you get a dialog box to link the Library, decline this option
5 - Within iTunes: Edit=>Preferences=>’iPod’ tab: switch iPod to manual transfer – click ‘OK’
    6 – File=>Add Folder
7 - Browse to and open ‘My Computer’ (click on the ‘+’) and select the iPod
    8 - Click OK
9 - The music files should start to transfer back into iTunes
9a –- This will take some time depending on your PC and the amount of songs on the iPod
No Playlists, or Ratings, Last Played, & Play Count attributes will be transferred from the iPod to iTunes using this method.
If you have problems with seeing the iPod within 'My Computer', try switching your update method to 'manual' , detach the iPod, then reconnect the iPod to the PC.
After recovering your song files, strongly consider developing a thorough backup strategy for just this type of situation (and many other potential disasters).
You need at least two full sets of your music, not including what is on the iPod:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and only one other medium is not considered having any backup.
If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer’s internal HD, then create and maintain at least two external sets (any multiple combinations of ExHDs, DVDs, CDs).
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?
Here is a post on developing a thorough backup strategy:

  • Sync music from Ipod touch to Pc

Im pretty sure this question has been answered but i cannot find it any where. I wanna transfer music i have from my ipod to my pc, i had a itunes on my old computer and before it died on my i managed to get all my music to my ipod, now that i have redownloaded itunes again, it wont let me sync my music unless i delete my old for my new!! this is a no no cause then all my music will be gone. i have athenticated this pc already but no luck and i have set it to Manage music and videos but still i cannot move my music. can anyone help me??

    Hi,
You cannot transfer music from your iPod to your PC unless it is music that was purchased in iTunes. iTunes will alert you if it finds purchases on your iPod that is not in your iTunes library and ask if you want to transfer them to your PC.
There are apparently 3rd party software that allows you to do this. Try a Google search.

The only way that I could advise you to do is by an application which is available for free on the app store called "Isharemusic". The applications has been giving an okay reviews on the Internet sites... That application allows you to send songs you have on your iPod to your email, from there you can download them to your home computer or whatever. Then you could add them to the iTunes library in your own ways.
Application link to the app store below:
