Cannot run quicktime

I downloaded Quicktime 7 (latest version I believe) straight from the Apple website (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/), installed it with no problems, and whenever I try to run the .exe I would get this error:
"Quicktime player has encountered a problem and needs to close", almost immediately.
I just restored my laptop, so it should be a fresh install. I'm using Windows XP. Quicktime never had any errors prior to the restore.
The reason I'm installing Quicktime is because apparently iTunes needs it, and the option to install Quicktime together with iTunes is bugged (iTunes would say it's missing files and cannot run), so I have to install Quicktime and iTunes separately.
Is there any solution to this? Thanks in advance.

many thanks.
The "fatal error" in this context has (recently) been indicating trouble with old, misplaced QuickTime componentry lurking about in your system.
(Whether or not the message is a symptom of that problem seems to depend on what version of old misplaced stuff is lurking and what version of QuickTime proper we're trying to install or uninstall ... but in recent times, there's been an uptick in fatal errors being caused by that.)
So let's try investigating that possibility first.
First we'll adjust some view settings on the PC.
1. Open My Computer from the desktop or Start menu.
2. In the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
5. Click OK.
Now in "My Computer" open Local Disk C: (or whichever drive your operating system is installed on).
Open the "Windows" folder.
Open the "System32" folder.
What files or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file or folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

I have tried to install quicktime and itunes and when i run them windows vista home tells me that Data Execution Prevention has closed the application. I have removed itunes and quicktime and just tried installing quicktime - and i get the same error.

What are you doing when iTunes or Quicktime crashes? Does it crash on launch?
Have you ever installed a 3rd party Quicktime alternative -- i.e. you downloaded and installed Quicktime from a non-Apple source? (There are some codec vendors that repackage / redistribute Quicktime. I recommend only installing Quicktime from the Apple web site or Apple Update Software.)
When you uninstalled Quicktime, did you do the scorched earth version of the Quicktime uninstall -- where you uninstall, then run the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility and then manually search for Quicktime files (particularly in your system folder) and delete them?
What I'm concerned about is that you have a partial, non-standard Quicktime install on your machine.
Do you have any third party iTunes plugins or Quicktime codecs installed?

  • Getting a microsoft error report when trying to run Quicktime

I have dell laptop which has windows XP. I was not able to run Itunes because I got an error that said that microsoft has encountered an error and i choose to send an error report or not. so i uninstalled and reinstalled itunes and quicktime with no avail. After going these forums, I uninstalled itunes and only installed the quicktime standalone player and i get the same error which tells me the problem is with quicktime. I tried all the stuff on the forum but cannot get quicktime to work which then means I cant get itunes to work which totally *****! any ideas? I wish Apple had a phone/chat support like dell.

I am also having this issue with a new Dell laptop which runs Windows XP tablet edition. I have tried installing QT 7.5.5 twice, and even installing an older version (7.1.6). Every time I try to open QT I get a brief error message on the screen after which it crashes and restarts the system....very frustrating....

    I'm running a Powerbook G4 with OS X 10.4.7. I've already installed iTunes 6.
After using Software Update to get the latest QuickTime (I have the license to access Pro features), I am unable to run QuickTime. I get the following error:
You cannot open the application "QuickTime Player.app" because it may be damaged or incomplete.
I also tried to download it again from the Apple->QuickTime->Download page, but I get the same result.
Does anyone know how I can get 7.1.2 working or...
How do I go back to an earlier working version of QuickTime 7 Pro,
    and,
Which version should I use (I'd also like to be able to use it with iTunes, which I have successfully used in the recent past).

  • Get Error Message "itunes cannot run because some of its required files ...

complete message that i see in a pop-up window -- "itunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing. Please reinstall itunes".
I check windows update. Microsoft says I'm up to date. When I reinstall ipod off the CD and/or itunes/quicktime from iTunesSetup.exe file version 7.0.2.16 it installs ok. If I choose unintall then reinstall or if I repair the itunes software the install program says everything is fine.
However when I connect to Ipod. The ipod window comes up in itunes and then shuts down real fast. Itunes continues to work but i can't see the ipod.
The showstopper happens when i shut down itunes after the attempt to connect the ipod. When I restart itunes i get the message -- "itunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing. Please reinstall itunes".
    Reinstall **** resumes.
    What files are missing?
It would be nice if the interface offered more details. Or I could go online to a self diagnostic and repair web page like Microsoft offers.

I think things are too simple...
    What are my options?
    Help Please.

"itunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing. Please reinstall itunes".
Just uninstall and reinstall. If you get some kind of error in the uninstall process, then if it were me, I'd use windows system restore to restore your system right before the original install of iTunes. Even if you don't get the error when you uninstall, it sounds to me like it hasn't been installed properly. So if you decide to go with system restore and the same thing happens, I would download a fresh copy of iTunes installer from their website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Make sure you download the one for Windows.
"I check windows update. Microsoft says I'm up to date."
This is because that you are. Microsoft has nothing to do with iTunes updates.

  • ITunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing.....

"iTunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing. Please reinstall iTunes."
Is the error message I receive when trying to launch iTunes or updating my iPod.
I have tried uninstalling both iTunes and qtime, restarting, installing with the iTunes75Setup.exe found on the iTunes download page from apple.com.
To help narrow the issue, during install/uninstall/repair this error also occurs as it is "Registering iTunes automation server"
any suggestion on how to resolve this issue would be great

First uninstall Quicktime 7.3 only in control panel. Then download Quicktime 7.2 from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktimeforwindows.html. Hopefully it works for you because it worked for mine.

  • During installation of iTunes appears an error message: Itunes cannot run because some files are missing. What can I do?

Recently I received an iPad2 as a gift. I had iTunes because an iPod I had. First I put some productivity apps through my computer. Then I bought some other games apps through WiFi. then when I try to synchronize, I lost my productivity apps and just keep those buy on WiFi. Now I try to install iTunes again, and what I received at the end is a message that tells me "iTunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing. Please reinstall iTunes".
I did it a couple of times. Same result. One of this times, I also retired those programs recommended on help page: iTunes, QuickTime, Bonjour, Apple Mobile, etc. (in the order indicated)
    Your help will be appreciated.

  • ITunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing.  How

I have tried the "repair" option to fix my "iTunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing error message."  No luck.  I have rebooted.  No luck.  I am afraid to reinstall iTunes.  I have already lost my music once when I fried my computer.  I don't want to have to purchase my music AGAIN.  Is this really the only way to fix this?  Do I have to uninstall before I re-install?

There are a few ways to fix this. For me, going to add/remove programs and then clicking on itunes, CHANGE, then REPAIR worked. I was also getting an issue that after a few days or a reboot, it would kill itself again..
Others have to completely uninstall itunes and quicktime, erase their program files directories, then reinstall quicktiem first then itunes.
Others have to uninstall itunes, go to internet explorer and clear the recent downloads and the cache, then close ie, redownload, and then install itunes.
    Good luck!

This problem started when program failed to respond. I received a report from MS instructing me to uninstall quicktime. I do not have any further details on that message from MS. My big mistake was following the advise and removing quicktime.
After removing quicktime iTunes would not open. No response to any attempts to open program. I did not check the task manager, processes tab to see what was happening.
Tried to reinstall from disk. Tried to reinstall from web. No change. Read some of the messages on this forum and saw some messages that reinstalling windows might be required. Did not want to go there, but that gave me the idea of trying system restore. I did that and tried again to reinstall iTunes. No luck. More research and I found a message to install quicktime stand alone. Did that. But no help.
I hope I included all the details. It is kind of a long story. Thanks in advance for any help.

    hiya!
Did not want to go there, but that gave me the idea of trying system restore.
ouch. did you system restore "over the top" of the itunes installation date without uninstalling itunes? that's a known cause of that particular "some of its required files" error message. (the system restore strips out a bunch of the fresh itunes installation entries.)
here's a good reference on what System Restore does and doesn't do for you:
(MS) Frequently Asked Questions Regarding System Restore in Windows XP
at this stage, probably the best thing to do would be to uninstall your existing itunes and QT using the complete uninstall instructions given here:
Troubleshooting iTunes, iPod Software, and QuickTime installation on Windows
if you run into troubles on the uninstall, try using the Windows Installer CleanUp utility:
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
once everything has been scraped out, head to Windows Update to make sure you're fully up to date in that regard. (you may have lost a few during the system restore.)
next we'll try a careful "staged" install. download and save the following installers to your hard drive. (we'll run the installations from there rather than online.)
    Quicktime 7.0.3 Standalone Installer
    iTunes 6.0.1.3 Installer
switch off any antivirus and antispyware applications prior to installs.
run the QuickTime install. reboot. run the iTunes install. reboot.
does iTunes open properly after that?
    keep us posted.
    love, b

  • "iTunes cannot run because some of it required files are missing."

I first plugged in my iTouch to update and got an error message. Close iTunes and tried to re-open and got that error message: "iTunes cannot run because some of it required files are missing. Please reinstall iTunes." Obviously tried uninstalling and reinstalling and repairing. Also tried uninstalling and reinstalling Quicktime by itself no luck. Not sure what happened, hopefully this can be fixed quick.
    Thanks,

Close iTunes and tried to re-open and got that error message: "iTunes cannot run because some of it required files are missing. Please reinstall iTunes."
I don't like that one on modern versions of iTunes. If files *really were* missing, the modern versions would be much more likely to attempt to do a repair install of themselves when you went to launch them.
We'd better check for malware. (I've seen this crop up for at least one chap in the context of a Backdoor.Bot infection.)
Download and install the free version of Malwarebytes. Update your Malwarebytes definitions and then run a full scan.

Does Malwarebytes pick up any infections? If so, what does it call the infections?

    HI daddio,
Ok some things first I need to know...Did you use Microsoft cleanup utility to clean up all those uninstalls you have done?
I hate Norton and anyone who reads my posts will know that. I have seen way too many infected PC's by Norton users. Did you try the EWIDO and AdAware scan? I see you said you read lots of posts. That is helping folks remove the malware in order to get iTunes and quicktime back to health.

Hey fella's I recently have been having trouble with iTunes. I received the error message itunes cannot run because of your audio configuration. i followed the steps to fix that by reinstalling quicktime. Now when i go to open itunes another error message pops up stating "itunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing, please reinstall itunes" i've tryed repairing it and reinstalling it and the same thing continues to reoccur. i've restored my system twice and it still persists. I'm baffled could it be a bug? a virus? I noticed during repair that about 3/4 of the way through, the error message pops up. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
