Cannot Run Updates

I am having an issue with a java based page crashing everytime I try to access it. I think I need to run an update on my computer, but can't get my Updater to run. Everytime I access it, the icon shows up in my tool bar for a second and then dissaperes without running. Any ideas on how to fix this?

First, try using Disk Utility on your computer to repair permissions. You cold also go to the extent of actually verifying and repairing your drive using the instructions provided by BDaqua that I include below.

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
If repairing permissions does not work then go to your home folder and then into the Library folder, then into the Preferences folder and find a file called com.apple.installer.plist. Take that file and move it to someplace other than that folder. plist files are preferences files and on occasion can be corrupt anf cause a program to behave like your installer. If the installer now works you can trash that file.

    I'm trying to run the updates individually to bring Acrobat up to v.8.1.2, but every time I try to run one, I get an error that neither Safari not Acrobat can be running during the install process. Neither are!! I've verified it through the process viewer in Activity Monitor. I'm running 10.5.3, so I'm not sure if the latest update broke something. Is there some kind of workaround to get these updates installed?

    The issue with safari is normal and has had that warning since Safari's existence.
    What I've done to get around the problem of the other, is engage the updater (Help > update) then when you notice the Updater's symbol in the dock click and hold or right click and hold down until a little popup balloon will show up choose "keep in Dock" now quit out of Updater and quit out of Acrobat. Now click on icon in dock and try running updater.
    It
    has never been a good idea to update a program while its running. You run a great risk of either corrupting the application from the install or running a patch over a corrupted application. Neither is good.
    Another way to get around this, is if you click on the updater within help menu as soon as it comes up click on menu bar of the application and choose quit acrobat. The Updater is another application and once set into motion it doesn't quit when you quit Acrobat (same applies to reader.)
    IN OS9 days it was even recommended, that just before you started installation of a new version of an application to park the old version in the Trash (do not empty) and install. This forced the installer to right to a new section of the Hard Drive. Here if you installed over top the old , it was written over top the existing program. and if the old program was corrupted the new install would be as well.

    Exactly which model iBook G3 is it?
    What is the Processor speed?
    What size is the Hard Drive, and how much free space is available?
    How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
    What type of internal Optical Drive does it have?
    If you have the system restore/install discs, use the instructions here Reset Admin Password.
    If the previous owner did not include the discs, contact the seller and request they be furnished.
    Or if you can call Apple Customer Service 1-800-767-2775, and provide the serial number of the iBook, you may be able to purchase replacement original system discs.
    However, those will be for the version of OS, that was pre-installed when manufactured.
    But, they will contain the bundled software, that is not included in a Full Retail Version, of a newer OS X. The Apple Hardware Test, specific to the Mac model, will also be included.
    If the original OS, is lower than the current installed version of OS X, you will also need to purchase a corresponding Full Retail Version, of the desired system.

    Use the Task Manager's "Processes" tab to kill any running Adobe or PhotoshopElements processes.

    Hi everyone,
    I have been using my thinkpad x201s for more than one year by now. And recently I change a new and larger hard drive for my laptop. When I tried the thinkpad rescue and recovery disc on the new hard drive, everything works fine except that I cannot run Windows Updates after the installation was finished.  The recovery DVDs were burned directly from the original image stored in the computer when the first I received my laptop last year.
    Every time when I try to run the Windows Update, it shows the following: "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running, you may need to restart your computer."
    I restarted my computer later but nothing changed. Can't run Windows Updates and can't even install IE9.
    I then moved back to my old hard drive and everything is normal, no problem with Windows Updates. I also tried to create a back-up image by running win 7 Backups and Restore. Later when I changed back to the new drive and followed the instructions to restore my system from the image I created earlier in a USB drive, it worked except that still the system can't run Windows Updates program.
    I'm now getting very confused and upset, is it something to do with the software copyright? It's been a week now and I tried to Google the similar problem but no solutions work here. All I want to do is moving my current system to the new hard drive so that I can continue to use my laptop but it just failed updating every time.
    Could anyone kindly tell me what to do when changing hard drive in order to avoid the problem I'm dealing with? Sorry I'm not a pro type user and just want my laptop to work appropriately.
    My warranty has already expired so I guess the Lenovo Technical Hotline wouldn't answer my questions anymore. Please help!! Much appreciated.

    I'm not sure this is the issue, but from your description, it seems as though all you have to do is activate the windows update service. If I were you, I'd search for "Services" in the start menu, open it and look for "Windows Update". Check in its properties that it is set to "Automatic (Delayed)", if it isn't, set it, and start the service, you should then be able to check for updates, be careful though that none of your other programs aren't stopping the service, usually these programs are there to "optimize your performance" or "boost your system",...

    With that one in that context, I think we should check for malware.
    Try downloading and installing the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware. Update your MBAM definitions and then run a full scan of the PC. (Takes about 2 hour on my Lenovo.)

    Sorry to hear that. I understand your frustration and I hope they send back a better working N78-3.
    Myself, I count myself lucky. Everything works perfectly for me right now...email, bluetooth, maps, gps, 3rd party apps, battery life, 3G, wifi, etc. etc.
    The only issue I've been having is the dreaded reboots but I believe that may have to do with 3rd party apps. I recently uninstalled Google Search app from my N78 and since then it hasn't rebooted or shown any issues. This seems odd at first but makes sense if you think about the fact that the Google Search app loads itself into memory and runs in the background at all times.
    I did this this past Tuesday night and so far no reboots, crashes or any problems. I'm sure I just jinxed myself but I've been using it heavily over the last few days with no issues. Prior to this, it would usually reboot every 2 days. If it doesn't reboot for another few days I'll be happy.
    I would normally not stand for this but I just love the phone and if I got something else it'd probably be the iPhone 3G which has perhaps more software bugs and issues than the N78-3!!

    Because I've had strange problems with past system update downloads, I now always get my system updates from http://support.apple.com/downloads/
    I always use the Update Combo version. It installs a fresh set of all previous updates as well as the new one. This gives you a fresh beginning with system 10.6.x. Since I adopted that practice, I've had no more issues with updates.

    I had the same problem with my iPad, i couldn't get the newer version of itunes because the computer was too old and my iPad couldnt sync with the old itunes. I got a PC from school a few months later so that solved the problem for me. Unfortunately i don't think there would be a program to put your music on your iPod, iTunes should be the only way to transfer files to Apple devices. What operating system are you running and what version of it is it?

    A few months ago on the Technet Gallery, I submitted this custom control to be used on SCSM console forms. The purpose of the control is to eliminate the "This item cannot be updated because it has been changed by another user or process" error
    message that we all have seen at least once (a day :) ).
    The details are in the gallery description (along with installation instructions for existing forms and your own custom forms).
    Here's a "short" description (nothing I ever post here is short :) ): This is a custom control that can be applied to an SCSM form like the Service Request form or Windows Computer form or your own custom form built with the authoring tool or Visual
    Studio. When you click "OK" or "Apply" on the form, this control scans the form and Service Manager's database for any changes to the object you have open. If a property that _you_ have changed on the form was _also_ changed in the CMDB
    (by a workflow or another user), this control will present a dialog box letting you know what happened. It will also let you choose which value to keep (yours, theirs, or the original value).
    Just as importantly (and important in a greater percentage of cases), if a workflow changes a "background" property (like FirstAssignedDate) while you have the form open and you click OK, the control will detect the change and allow the form submission
    to go through while keeping your changes and the FirstAssignedDate change that the workflow made. You won't get an error message or even a warning. And most importantly, you won't lose your changes.
    That's where the "optimistic" part of the control's name comes from. It applies optimistic concurrency control to SCSM forms, while also providing an anti-collision interface for you to use so you no longer lose any of your changes.
    Furthermore, this control will work on related items that are opened in memory; for example, the activities on a Service Request. So if you change an activity's title while the workflow engine sets it in progress, you won't get an error. The activity will
    be in progress and will get your new title when you click OK or Apply.
    Lastly, (and I admit this part is getting into the deep inner workings of console forms) if your form loads a sub projection at run time (to the root object) this control will detect the load and treat that sub projection as if it were apart of the original
    form all along.
    I've gotten a little feedback about this control, but I'd like to get more since it's a work in progress. So, I'm announcing it here on the forums. Please give it a try and let me know if you have any questions. I'll be happy to answer them here. Thanks,

    complete message that i see in a pop-up window -- "itunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing. Please reinstall itunes".
    I check windows update. Microsoft says I'm up to date. When I reinstall ipod off the CD and/or itunes/quicktime from iTunesSetup.exe file version 7.0.2.16 it installs ok. If I choose unintall then reinstall or if I repair the itunes software the install program says everything is fine.
    However when I connect to Ipod. The ipod window comes up in itunes and then shuts down real fast. Itunes continues to work but i can't see the ipod.
    The showstopper happens when i shut down itunes after the attempt to connect the ipod. When I restart itunes i get the message -- "itunes cannot run because some of its required files are missing. Please reinstall itunes".
    Reinstall **** resumes.
    What files are missing?
    It would be nice if the interface offered more details. Or I could go online to a self diagnostic and repair web page like Microsoft offers.

    Just uninstall and reinstall. If you get some kind of error in the uninstall process, then if it were me, I'd use windows system restore to restore your system right before the original install of iTunes. Even if you don't get the error when you uninstall, it sounds to me like it hasn't been installed properly. So if you decide to go with system restore and the same thing happens, I would download a fresh copy of iTunes installer from their website:

    Make sure you download the one for Windows.
    "I check windows update. Microsoft says I'm up to date."
    This is because that you are. Microsoft has nothing to do with iTunes updates.
