Cannot save document

I am a heavy user of numbers and have repeatedly hit the wall with some of my more advanced spreadsheets. Recently one of my templates would not save as a workable template any longer. I've stopped using it as a template which has worked for a couple months but now when I've tried to make a few more improvements and it is not allowing me to save. This one spreadsheet is the most integral part of every project in my company. I can't emphasize how important it is for me to get this resolved.
Here is the current issue:
In the sheet: "Pricing Backpage" in the table "Proposal Pricing Table" I have tried to enter a new category and it allows me to enter it but as soon as I do the spreadsheet will no longer save. I have a table with 215 rows and "Z" columns and its broken into 5 categories (in the technical table-feature sense of the word). The header row and columns are frozen. I can't think of anything else that would effect it. Almost ever cell in the table has a formula in it. The document size is 6MB.
Error Message:
The document "name" could not be saved.
Another issue I am having is that on occasion numbers will not allow me to copy and paste data. Restarting the application seems to work when that happens but still annoying.
The issue happens on multiple computers within my network. The file is saved on a Xserve Server.
Anyone - PLEASE HELP!
The issue has been reported to apple as a bug.
Thank you.

Jeremy,
We all want our spreadsheets to perform. We are all users, just like you, except perhaps for the fact that you seem to have found a practical limit of Numbers capability to handle large files. We've told Apple via Feedback that the program is slow. I wonder if FileMaker Pro would be a better business solution in your case.

  • Cannot Save Document Leading to Serious Error in InDesign

    I'm using both InDesign CS3 and CS4 in Mac OS X 10.5.5
We recently got a new printer at work (Xerox 700 Digital Color Press). Since then, I've had major issues saving some of my documents. Immediately after printing a document duplexed, It says this when I try to save: "Cannot save the document. It may be opened by other applications. Close applications and try again. You may also use saveas to save it into a new document." If I cancel and do a save as to another location, InDesign immediately crashes saying a serious error has been detected and must shut down. The same thing happens if I close the document without saving and try to open that same file again. I've tried this with files located on our server as well as my hard drive with the same results.
Fortunately, restarting the computer resolves this problem (although only until I try printing it duplexed again). If I print it without duplexing, It will save just fine. No other applications I use are having this problem. As a temporary solution, I've been printing the job to the hold and then changing the settings on the printer to make the job duplex. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the entire creative suite as well as deleting the preferences and other settings, but none of those things have helped.

I managed to find a workaround to this problem. Hopefully this'll be useful for anyone else with this problem until the problem is resolved by Adobe.
After you close the document without saving, rename the file. When you open the file, it will open as a read-only document. Do a "Save As" to another location. You can then move the file you just saved to where it belongs. However, you won't be able to delete the previous file until you restart the computer.

  • Keynote - cannot save document

Hi, anybody knows how to solve this problem? I am creating a keynote document with quite a lot of pictures. After the 3-4 slide I could save the document with no problems. I am in the 11th slide now and suddenly, when I tried to save the document it told me: "Couldn't auto-save document"
I've tried to reduce file to no avail.
If anybody has a good suggestion of what the problem is I'd really appreiciate it. I've been working on it for hours and I am afraid if I close Keynote I would loose the document -

I have 21 slides. Latest everything (OS, Keynote etc...). No problems until I added some more pictures and now I get the same message.
Every time I try to save my file, I get "Couldn't auto-save document".
Honestly, this is so pitiful, by a mega rich company that tells us continually that they produce amazing stuff.  Yes, Keynote truly is amazing. Powerpoint does not have these amazing problems. What is auto-save doing anyhow?  There are no setting for auto-save, nothing in the help files. I am not asking it to auto-save. I just click "save" but uncle Apple knows best, and fails. Sounds like my wife's iPad iOS 8.0.2 in which Pages is really unstable.  I guess Apple cannot afford proper testers.....?
I can duplicate the document and it seems to save that new file fine.

  • Flash CS6 cannot save document

I am posting a new discussion of this since I couldn't find an answer for this for a Windows computer. I am using Windows 8.1 and Flash CS6 using the Creative Cloud Application.
Whenever I try to save a .fla document it gives an error saying it "cannot save the document as [filename] try changing the filename or file location".
I do work over a network but have been saving the file to my desktop and moving it back to my network file when I'm done editing it. But now its happening even with local files on my desktop. Is anyone else having this issue or found a fix?

    Hey mediachic,
We have done a lot of troubleshooting for this issue and with NO help from Adobe support what so ever. They just keep repeating that they don't support individual networks and advise not to open or modify files over a network as it may/will cause corrupted files and not allow you to save. Try having them save the file to a local drive or flash drive and work on the project from there. So far this is the only work around that we have found for this but it is not bulletproof. We still have some users that are crashing in flash just not as often. Also, make sure there are no pending updates for Flash if there are update Flash and reboot. Hope that helps. Best of luck!

  • Cannot save documents after updating to Pages 5.5.2

After updating to Pages 5.5.2, I can no longer save or edit documents. It just says that (document name).pages can not be created. Same thing happens if I try to export to .docx or .pdf. Please help, I can no longer work, the update completely broke my program.

    Hello mckayj93,
It is hard to say why it is not allowing you to save or export a file, but try deleting pages from your Mac and then download it again so it will install a fresh copy if you think it was something to do with the update. There will be a record of Pages associated with your Apple ID so it will not charge you to download it again.

  • Flash Cs6 incredibly sluggish save time, & unable to save document as

I am using Flash CS6, animating on ones with the brush tool.  my timeline is 100 frames long, there arent keyframes on every frame, but there are a lot of them.  my .fla file is 79mb.
there is only one thing in my library - a 15 second .wav audio file...
Saving the .fla file takes about 2 1/2 minutes!
after the 2 1/2 minutes I get flashed the "cannot save document as...   please try saving with a different name or on a different volume".
contrary to the error message the file does in fact save perfectly fine - in that volume with that name.
what is the deal with the save time being so outrageously long? the program is equally sluggish with copying and pasting keyframes - though thats less of an issue than the save time.
please help me, i can send you the flash file if your willing to look at it.
ps: I tried opening the file in cs5.5 - the save time was slightly faster, but not by much.

    Sujai, here’s what I found:
    1.       The student’s project is 58 mbytes in size. This is mostly because she used the flame deco tool to create a frame-by-frame animation of a rocket.
    2.       At school students have networked folders. The network is 1 gbit, and the server is in the same building.
    3.       It took 3 minutes and 40 seconds to save her project. At the end of the Save operation, we got the error message that it didn’t save properly (And, if we have auto-save on, this happens every 10 minutes). . However, the file was properly saved, and could be opened.
So, it appears that Flash has problems saving files of this size, at least in our network. This surprises me, because 50 mbytes is not that big.
I was able to get around this problem by having the student change her flame animation to a movie clip, and Tween the flames. It doesn’t have quite as cool a look as the frame-by-frame, but it’s more efficient (and only 6mbytes in size).
    Thoughts? JR

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

    That's it really.

  • Cannot save error, "This document could not be saved. There was a problem reading this doc...(8)"

Cannot save file. Get error message, "This document could not be saved. There was a problem reading this document (8)".   What does this mean and how do I fix it?  The file opens normally, so how is there a problem reading this document?

    Hi MarkStabler,
It appears that your document gets corrupted, try printing the file through Adobe PDF printer and then check the issue.

  • Cannot Save New Document to SP2010 from Excel 2007

I have two users who cannot save a new file from Excel 2007 to Sharepoint 2010 using the network share path. They receive the following error:
You cannot save the file you selected. The folder you selected is not an actual file system location.
However, other users can save this way with not trouble at all.
When they have the Excel file open, they go to Save As... and the window opens. Then they type in the path to the Sharepoint library where they want to save the file: \\intranet\DavWWWRoot\site\library\
At this point, they should be able to click the Save button and the window will refresh to the Sharepoint library. They would then be able to enter the name of the file and click the Save button again. However, when they click the Save button the first time
to refresh the window, nothing updates and the path they just typed goes away.
My first thought was an issue with permissions, but I've checked and double checked that they are in the correct group.
Then I decided to go even more basic and have them use Windows Explorer to browse to the location. They were able to.
I then had them right click within Windows Explorer, select New, and click Text Document. Not only were they able to create the new text file, but I confirmed it updated
the Sharepoint library successfully. So, that obviously rules out any issues with permissions.
Out of sheer frustration, I even tried mapping a network drive to the Sharepoint library and having them save to the mapped drive location, which of course yielded the exact same error.
I have also double checked that the Webclient service is running on the machines.
One more piece to note is that these two users are still running XP. They'll be upgraded to Win7 later this year, but this needs to work before then.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
Did the issue only occur in Excel? What about the other Office suits?
Please copy the site URL to the File name Text Box in the Save as window. Like:
    http://intranet\site\library

  • I transferred a pages file from ipad to mac (also pages) via email for editing. However received message that cannot save edited document to the mac because "trial period has expired for iwork"! I have purchased pages for both machines separately. Ideas?

I transferred a pages file from ipad to mac (also pages) via email for editing. It opened normally. However, after editing, received message that cannot save edited document to the mac because "trial period has expired for iwork"! I have purchased pages for both machines separately and presumed they would work without a hitch. Am I missing something?

It used to be that to update the trial to the licensed version with the box, you just inserted the DVD & ran the installer to convert the trial to licensed. This changed with Snow Leopard. You now need to delete the trial & then reinstall from the boxed DVD or the Mac App Store. The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user.
Yvan Koenig has written an AppleScript that removes the files. You can find it on his iDisk in For_iWork > iWork '09 > uninstall iWork '09.zip.

  • After migrating to a new MBP, when saving or opening documents, I sometimes (but not always) get a warning such as: "Word cannot save this document due to a naming or permissions error on the destination volume." Can someone please explain?

I recently migrated from a MBP with OS 10.6 to a MCB with OS 10.8. Some glitches are popping up. Here's the one on my mind at the moment:
When saving or opening documents, I get a warning such as: "Word cannot save this document due to a naming or permissions error on the destination volume." Can someone please explain?

Since this is isolated to a single file, try exporting it to Interchange Format (.inx), then open and save the resulting file as a new InDesign file.
Since the problem occurs during export, that may not be possible. Another option to try would be to copy all elements, page by page, and "paste in place" into a new document the same size. If you used layers, be sure to enable "paste remembers layers" in the layers panel menu.
This kind of problem is often indicative of an underlying font issue. You said there are only three fonts, and you should verify that in Type > Find Font... Try replacing, at least temporarily the fonts in use with something else that you know to be reliable from other documents. You might want to do this before the other steps.

  • Cannot save as or save new documents in Office:mac

Cannot save as or save new documents in Office:mac.

Your profile says 10.7.3 which is Lion. 10.6 is Snow Leopard.
If that's the case and you did a security update via software update last week that also caused problems for many. Apple have issued an update to that as well, version 1.1:
