Cannot see my BackUps

Well, at first I have to say: I setup TimeMachine with the leopard-beta. As it worked fine, I decided to use it even with the final release. And yes, TimeMachine is making hurly BackUps to that "old" sparse-image (as I initiated it via AirPort).
I learned, that network backups are not supported in the final release, so I plugged my Disk directly into my MBP.
So far so god, TM is backing up my files... BUT I cannot see the BackUps through the interface. I checked the name of my MBP, no difference, I opened the sparse - image, there are all the BackUps since I started in September.
How can I make them visible in my TM- Interface? I don't want to loose them

Well, finally I found a solution:
1. I managed to make the mounted backup image visible: http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/invisible.html (Hint from First Magus)
2. Changed the name of my Mac to a name without blanks etc. (e.g: MyCompi).
3. Changed the name of the mounted volume to the new name (e.g.: Backup of MyCompi)
4. Changed the name of the image file to that new name (MyCompi_XXX.sparsebundle where XXX is Your MacAdress).
5. Finally right-clicked on the TM-Icon in the Dock while the image was mounted and chose "search other TM Volumes". Now I was able to choose the mounted image.
Everything works fine.

  • Moving TM disk from Network to USB: cannot see previous backups

    Hi,
I have decided to move my external USB disk from the Airport Extreme USB port to my computer USB port to speed up backups and restores.
Unfortunately it seems that I cannot see anymore previous backups in the disk using TM.
The disk was accessed through the network and it was setup to have user level access to it: each user have his folder on the disk.
So, what I have done is to move back the disk to my computer, I have run disk utility to check and fix the disk since when the drive is attached to the AE with user privileges, it will report errors once you connect back to the computer. Once that permission errors were addressed, I have moved the time machine backup to the disk root and I have told TM to use this new disk as backup location.
Then I have made a new backup to the disk and it seems that TM was able to detect the previous backups because it has added only few GB to the backup.
Then I have moved to a random folder were I have made changes, and I have started TM: when I do that, TM window will switch me back to "MyComputer" where I can see all drives.
I can move around but I am unable to move back in time, like there are no other backups.
TM backup file is about 140 GB and I can fully access it by using finder: I see that all previous data is there, but TM cannot see it.
I have not changed computer name,
I have tried to use the TM option to "open other TM disks" but It doesn't show any other disk in the select window.
Does anybody know what is happening and how I can try to fix?
    thanks!

    Thanks for the replies,
I would like to move from a wired network TM backup to a local firewire/USB backup.
So the first error I have made is to have deleted the user directory in the Airport Extreme external USB disk: I have moved the TM sparse bundle file to the new location but I didn't noticed that other hidden files were there.
Second, I was unable to browse the older TM backups using TM and it seems that I cannot "browse other TM backups" using such TM option because the window were not showing me any drive.
I have then realized that I have to mount the sparse bundle to see it in such TM option: then it seems to work perfectly.
So there is no need for me to find a solution to use again the same backup with the local disk: if I need something in future I will use the TM option to browse other backups and I think I will be able to recover any file from there. May be I cannot recover mails in this way.
I think it is also possible to fix by using the procedure listed in the previous link: I didn't try just because I don't want to spend more time on this issue and because I have not enough free space on other drives... but...
    ...it should be enought to:
    1- connect a new drive to the computer;
    2- mount the old TM sparse bundle image;
    3- use SuperDuper to copy all contents of mounted sparse bundle image into the new attached drive;
contents of the sparse bundle image seems to be equal to the structure and names used by a new fresh backup on a local USB disk, so I suppose that it could work... if someone wants to try a tell if it is so... thanks!

  • Time Machine cannot see original backup

I had to change my router and with it all network settings. As a result I could not "see" my time capsule in airport. So I reset it.
Airport could then see it. I re-set it up again with new network details etc.
So now if I look at the time machine backup it can see all my previous backups. BUT when I enter the utility to continue with backups, it refuses to let me use my "previous drive" (original backups) and asks me to use a "new drive" that it has set up - which says no existing backups on it.
So how do I make it see both drives as being the same thing? Or must I start backups all over again?

    Did you reset Time Machine?
    A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Are you seeing double instance of the TC in finder? You need to delete the older and now no longer existant TC so only the TC with the new name is available.
Pondini has lots more info if you keep running into trouble..
You should not need to start over.. TM should be able to pickup the old backups once you connect to the TC.. but you do sometimes need to force it to do that.

  • ITunes is backing my iPhone, however it cannot see or find those backups?!

    Hello
I'm running the latest version of iTunes with my iPhone 4. Until recently (but I"m not sure when), I was able to back up and restore fine. However there is now a problem. Please help as I've spent hours chasing leads on Google and nothing has worked!
Notes. This is on my iMac - my Windows Laptop doesn't have this problem, I checked. But I hardly ever use that machine, and need it to be working on my Mac really.
    So:
When I hit back up in iTunes, it backs up ok. The files are there in the proper folder in MobileSync and there doesnt appear to be a problem. But (its as if) iTunes cannot see the backup. The backup is not listed under Devices in preferences, in fact nothing is. Plus on Summary Page, is says "Last backed up to this computer: Unknown" (Although I can see the last back up there in the folder). I also tried clicking "Restore Backup" on the Summary Page and did a right click on iPhone in devices and selected "Restore from backup". However, when I do either of these, nothing happens and I mean nothing.
NB. I've also tried Backing up to iCloud and this too seems not to work.
Any ideas would be great, am willing to try anything!
    Thanks

    Troubleshooting: iPhone Backup Problems
written by: Shane Burley     • edited by: Simon Hill • updated: 9/11/2010
Have you run into the problem with iTunes not being able to backup your iPhone? Here is a look at how to troubleshoot different issues if you have.
    Back-It-Up
Part of what happens when you sync your iPhone to iTunes is that iTunes will back up your iPhone, saving some of the content and settings that are on the device. This iPhone backup is especially important when you are updating your iPhone, such as to a new iOS. This is done so that if anything happens to your iPhone, or if you need to restore your iPhone, you can maintain your media, contacts, iPhone apps and the rest. Just like everything else with the iPhone technology, sometimes there are problems. You may find that iTunes could not backup the iPhone, and there could be a whole range of reasons for this. Here are some ways to troubleshoot the problem if you do find that iTunes could not backup the iPhone.
    Manual Back Up
If you find that the automatic iPhone back up is not working with iTunes it doesn't necessarily mean that iTunes could not back up your iPhone. First, you need to make sure that there are no internal software problems, iPhone apps, like firewalls, that are going to interfere with iTunes functions. Go ahead and locate your iPhone under the Devices heading in iTunes and right click it. From the right click menu select Back Up, which should initialize it. This is also the first option you should take if you get a "backup session failed" message when trying to back up the iPhone.
    Delete Old Backup
If you find that iTunes persistently cannot backup your iPhone then you may want to delete the old backup files, which may be causing the problem. Go to the folder Preferences –>Devices –> Delete Backup and identify these files, and you should start by copying them to another location just in case you need them if there is an iPhone content problem. The backup files are going to be in:Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/BackupWhen you are working on your Mac computer. If you are working on a Windows based PC then they are in:C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

  • If someone can access my airport timecapsule wireless can they see my backup files too?If someone can access my airport timecapsule wireless can they see my backup files too?

I have 4 iMacs in the office and we are using the Airport Time Capsule 3TB to wirelessly back them up.
It is connected to the main wireless modem router.
I'd like everyone in the office (iMacs, PCs and guests) to connect to the internet through the Airport Capsule. (As I may have to move the main router out into another room to connect it to the built in ethernet cable network).
I'm concerned, though, that anyone who can access the wireless internet functions of the Timecapsule will also be able to see and copy the backup files on there.
    Should I be worried?

In normal operation, Macs can only "see" the backups that have been made from their own Mac. They cannot "see" the backups made on another Mac. Try it and see.
With some tricky workarounds that only a devious person would use, it is possible to "see" the main backup file of another Mac......but they would also have to have the user name and password for that Mac.....or actually be using that Mac to see inside the main file and access specific backups.
A bit safer and probably more reliable approach would have a backup hard drive connected to each Mac.
But, even then someone who really wanted the files would probably just take the hard drive.

  • Cannot see Time Capsule for backup but internet perfect A

I've seen other posts about time capsule problems and most talk about wireless dropout and loss of internet connectivity. My situation is almost the reverse:
Full airport strength in menu bar. Full access to internet sites on at least one computer. Cannot see Time Capsule via Airport Utility or in Finder on any computer. Time Machine backups fail (marked as Delayed in menu bar item).
If I reboot (via unplugging) the Time Capsule, it shows up again in Airport Utility and backups are successful. This has happened three times now. I think the first time was prior to upgrading the firmware. The second two times were after the Time Capsule firmware upgrade. In the second two instances, it looks like the backups run for about 12-13 hours, every hour. No problems. Then, they drop out. Yesterday, it ran from 8:30 AM until 9 PM.
I've got two Macs (a Powerbook G4 and a MacBook Pro), each running latest software updates (security, 10.5.2, etc.).
Unplugging (rebooting) my Time Capsule each day is not an option. That's partly why I moved from an ancient LinkSys router that always needed to be rebooted since we lost local and internet access. Any help is much appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Drew

Have you set up the TC with user accounts??
Most people just use the TC password..
I have done very little with user accounts on the TC.. it seems fundamentally wrong headed to me.. If you have a domain controller with everyone using accounts to login that is fine.. and the TC would then exist in connection to the domain controller.. but it is a home device and there is no function to all that.
What will happen if you change over to standard security or even turn on the guest account I am too scared to suggest as you may not easily get connection back again.. The TC certainly displays a warning going to accounts.. I am not sure of warnings going away from accounts.
If you didn't setup the TC, do you have admin access to it??
Perhaps I am assuming too much before you tell me everything. But I may suggest things you don't want to try.. unfortunately I cannot say this will work.. the issue is widespread across the Mountain Lion TC combo and I have yet to see Apple suggest a solution or even fess up there is a problem. Daily reboots are just simply now a part of the scene for all windows and Mac users.
Is the TC the main router for the network.. 1 hour is not default lease in the TC and very few people even know how to change it.. standard is 1day. I would consider 1hr adequately short for all arp tables to be kept up to date.. the computer should be seeking new lease at 30min.. ie half lease time.
If the TC is bridged an not controlling the network.. that can contribute to the issue.
Setting a static IP on the TC if it is bridged my help.

  • How do I get my pictures from photo vault to show again? Recently restored my phone and the backup saved the app. The app says 200 pictures etc. in the folder but I cannot see them.

I have a new iphone but I did a itunes restore backup. Basically all my apps, pictures, and text messages are back. The photo vault app says I still have the pictures but I literally cannot see them. It is a white screen but I can "select" a photo (a green check mark shows) when I choose a picture, yet it is just a white screen. I try to send it or copy it and I cannot find it.

    Also you could try this:
Following are Steps to Transfer Photos from iPhone to MAC:
1). Attach your iPhone to Mac
    2). Open up Preview
3). Click File menu and from there select “Import from iPhone…”
4). Select the photos you would like to transfer and click import, Select “Import All” in case you want to have all the photos in computer.
5). For confirmation sake go to ~/Pictures/ folder, picture copied from iPhone should be there.
If you have a windows PC then follow below given procedure to Transfer Photos from iPhone to PC.
You can accomplish this just using Windows Explorer, but there are two different methods. And here you go with the first one.
1). Plug your iPhone into your computer without iTunes running.
2). Now pop-up will appear asking what you would like to do with iPhone.
    3). Click on “View Content”
    4). Locate your photos.
5). Copy the same and paste it at desired location on your computer.
Another method for Mac users is "Image Capture" which is already installed on your mac, I will look for other applications for mac users, hope this helps!

  • Cannot see backups with Time Machine and Aiport Extreme

My MacBook Pro is backing up to to an Airport Extreme with a USB drive attached to it. The backing up seems to be working. ie time machine say's it backed up my machine.. eg at 1.57.pm today.
When I enter time machine to try and get a backup, it's not there... it has one finder window for "Now" (1st April) and then the next one in the list is 23rd of March. SO I cannot see any of today, yesterday or another other recent backups.
BTW, I had originally made a backup directly to the USB drive. I am not sure of the date but it could have been 23rd of March.
    Any ideas?

    Hey
I have the exact same problem. I have just switched from direct firewire-based Time Machine backup to an external drive, to said drive now connected to my Airport Extreme. I knew that it wouldn't accept the old TM backups, so I started up: Started the initial backup wirelessly, the unplugged it, and finished it via firewire. All worked fine, and the sparseimage was recognized and so on. After it was done, I attached the drive to the AE again, and it backup up as it was supposed to 3-4 times a day.
That was 3 days ago. But when I checked my TM yesterday, there was just the "today" window, and I couldn't browse anything. Today it's the same story. What gives?
Now, I opened the sparseimage on the TM drive to see if the incremental backups were there, and they were all there, but somehow TM doesn't read them. Can anybody who has a working TM wireless backup tell me if TM mounts the sparseimage to when launched and unmounts it afterwards?
TM worked great before when connected directly – never had a problem before and something tells me it's a problem with the sparseimage...Nevertheless, if it can't be fixed, I am back to friewire-based TM backup ;-<

  • Lion cannot see mountain lion time machine backups

I have just had the HDD on my 2010 iMac changed under the 1TB replacement program. Before wiping my original HDD I made sure my time machine back was up to date. Originally my machine was installed with Mountain Lion, the new HDD has just Lion. I have just tried the recovery utility to restore using time machine and all it can see is my updates before I installed Mountain Lion. Presumably Lion cannot see Mountain Lion backups or something else. Does anybody know how I can simply get my most upto date time machine backup to restore the system.
    Thanks

FYI I updated to Mountain Lion and still cannot do a full recovery from any Mountain Lion backups. The backups exist as I can see them in Finder and also when running the Time Machine app. In the app I'm able to restore individual items, but I don't want to waste my life doing this I just want to restore my system.

  • HT1766 I backed up my iphone 3GS using itunes 10. on 27/12 and today 29/12 and would like to restore using 27/12 backup but cannot see option to choose that backup nor can I now see that backup.

I backed my iphone 3GS on 27/12 and did a synchronization today with itunes 10.. which automatically did a backup prior to carrying out the synch.  I have just realised that I have lost my music as my music setting is defaulting to "selected playlist, artists, albums, and genres" and I am trying to restore using the backup I carried out on 27/12 but cannot see the option to choose that backup. When I right-click the device  and choose restore from backup, there are two iphone names - admin iphone and admin iphone 29th Dec 11:14 and statement underneath - Last backed up today 11:34.
To restore I selected admin iphone and restore - should I have selected admin iphone 29th Dec?
Where can I find the backup I carried out on 27th and how can I use it to restore to it?
    ta

Thanks for the info. No problem as I can sync my music to my iphone anyway -  it is still available on my music library on itunes - did not want to sync entire library as it is massive now  and for my ipod classic.
Other question - is it safe to update my iphone software to version 6.0.1 which keeps being prompted each time I connect my jailbroken 3GS iphone on itunes. I cannot install nor update a number of apps such as whats app, some games which I used to have on my iphone as each time I try to update or re-install, I am informed that I need IOS 4.3 or above.
    thanks

  • HT201269 itunes cannot see my iphone backup.  I have a backup of the backup on an external HD, but even tech support cannot figure this one out.  I copy and paste backups into the correct folder but itunes still does not see it.  All I need are my contact

Sorry for short novel I am writing.  I just wanted to cover as much backround as possible.
So, here it goes.  I backed up my iphone 4 after renting a movie.  The movie only played the starting credits before I was called on for daddy duty.  A few days later the movie would not play, so I restored my phone from my backup.  The movie would still would not play so itunes support refunded my purchase and ended my viewing privileges for that rental after verifying that I had not viewed the movie.  I then had a problem with my contacts showing up twice in the contacts list after the restore.  So I attempted another restore.  All was well at this point.  I then started having trouble with my pc and decided to copy the internal drive to an external source.  A week later I had a system failure and did a factory restore on my computer.  I re-installed itunes and tried to copy and paste the old backup into the new itunes.  Now itunes just flat out does not see the backup file (I failed to mention that I did a factory reset on the iphone after the last backup, hopping to start fresh).  Tech support had me uninstall and re-install itunes and then copy and paste the old backup into the newly installed itunes with no luck.  The files are all there, but itunes just doesn't see them (itunes says the device has not been backed up to the cloud or to the local machine).  We then tried backing up the factory restored iphone and replacing that restore file with one of my old backups on the external drive.  Ok, this is where it gets weird.  We replaced the guts of the folder but left the folder itself so itunes would continue to recognize the new backup folder with the old files.  Whoohoo, itunes now see's a backup folder full of old files, or so we thought.  The new files were deleted using shift delete so they would be gone for good and not mix with any files or folders.  When I restore my phone, it restores the files that were deleted from the restore file (pause here for a moment and imagine the stupid look on the face of tech support and I while we silently wonder how files that were permanently deleted were restored).  This left tech support and I both scratching our heads.  My service issue was escalated to the next level.  I waited for the phone call the next day that was scheduled at 10am to my wife's phone, but the call never came through.  As usual, apple disappoints again.  I just bought an iphone 5s and still have the iphone 4, and am looking for a solution to retrieve my contacts and restore to the 4 or 5s.  I am guessing that files in other folders must be associated with the iphone backup in order for itunes to retrieve the files.  Any ideas or support in retrieving my contacts would be greatly appreciated.

  • Upgraded to Mavericks, Enter Time Machine and cannot see any previous backup at all

MBP, upgrade from 10.6.8 to Mavericks.
After "Enter Time Machine", the time line on the right side of the screen does not show any previous backup at all.
In Finder, I can see the backup folder and the inside contents.
In Time Machine Preference, I did select the disk for backup again.
    Any idea ?  Thank you.

Thank you for your reply and the links.
    I did this:
    1) I have two ext. USB drives for the MBP time machine backup, did not occur to me to try the other one which is the very first disk, let's call it disk 1, I used for backup, the other one I started using after a year or so.
    2) reboot with the disk 1 connected
    3) do a "Backup Now", and I forgot the exact dialogs and what they say.
    4) something like, "choose a disk for the backup", I chose disk 1
    5) it knows I had two disk for backup and ask me if I want to use two disk for backup, click yes
    6) the time machine pref. says something like initial backup (after new system installed?)
    7) after it done, I can see the previous time machine back up and the time line goes back to where it was before.
    8) connect the disk 2 and "Backup Now", it just went to backup right away, after it's done, I can see the prev. backups and the time line too.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • I cannot see my photos in iphoto library - I tried to restore with Time Machine and that doubled the number of photos (copies) but I still cannot see the images - the events are there but no thumbnails although the number of pics per event is correct...

Can someone help me see my pictures again in iphoto? 3 weeks ago while uploading a video from iphoto to Facebook, my events thumbnails all disappeared and were replaced by black squares - the event names and number of pics in each remain but when I click on the event, I only get squares where the pics should be - when I click those squares, I get  a square with a triangle  and an exclamation mark in middle.
Apple had emailed me about defective disks in iMacs so I took mine to the Apple Store and they replaced my HD then reinstalled from my backup via Time Machine - I still cannot see my pics! I tried to reinstall from an earlier Time Machine date - that copied everything and now my HD has double the amount of data but I still cannot see my pictures!
I would be thankful for any guidance on how to retrieve my pictures...
    Thank you.
