Cannot see my files on Time Capsule (not using Yosemite)

Bought a 2T Time Capsule to back up two networked computers, both running Lion 10.7.5 and using Time Machine for back up.
I can see files for one of the two computers, not both. How do I find files on the second computer?

I assume that the Capsule backed up only what was on my computer, not my wife's computer. She will have to back up her computer separately, correct?
Correct.
where do I go to see what is backed up so I can be sure it worked?
It is going to take Time Machine some time to index the new backup, so wait a day or so for this to occur.
Then, click on the Time Machine "clock" icon down on the dock at the bottom of the screen. A lot of data has to load, so if you are using a wireless connection, leave things alone for 5-10 minutes or so.
Once you have history of backups, you can use the time line on the right of the screen to select a data of a past backup to view how your Mac looked on that date. If you need to restore a file, navigate to the location, click to highlight the file, and then click Restore below the window

How can I see my files on Time Capsul

Do you mean Time Machine files or ordinary files.. ??
Did you copy files to the TC? It should just open in the finder as long as the TC is available and the airport utility shows it connected.
If you want to see the contents of the TM files.. open the sparsebundle and use main Time Machine icon in the dock.

  • Time Capsule Not Using Full Capacity

Good morning. I have a 1tb Time Capsule and use Time Machine to backup my iMac and my son's MBP.
The Time Machine backup is reporting that 235gb of 998gb is available. But it's been "stuck" at about 235gb for weeks. It seems as if the system is not using all available capacity. Is this normal?
I should note that at one time I had miscellaneous folders and files on the Time Capsule (from a PC). Would those miscellaneous files have somehow "blocked" access to the rest of the free space? I have removed those misc files, but still not seeing the system use my full drive capacity.
Any ideas how to get the system to use the rest of the drive?
    Thanks in advance, John

The Time Capsule is reporting on the space that backups are using on the drive. Backups are stored in a special container called a sparsebundle file.
Sparsebundles behave differently than normal files. The sparsefundle expands as more data is added. But, it behaves differently when files are deleted.
So, lets say that the sparsebundle is up to 100 GB.  Now, you delete 10 GB from your backups beasue you don't need the files any longer. So, you think you should see 90 GB now.
The sparsebundlw will still show as a 100 GB. It will begin to "grow" again when more than 100 GB is present.

  • Files on time capsule not visible in Finder window

I copied files to my time capsule.  The time machine app works fine but only if it is running can I see the files I copied to time capsule.  I would like to use this disk for media storage for iTunes but if it is not visible a lot of the time then it isn't useful for that purpose

The Time Capsule is for your backups.
Three things....all bad...happen when you try to move the iTunes Media Folder to the Time Capsule disk.
    1) Access to media becomes much slower....typically 15-20 seconds before you will hear the song that you selected.
    2) The iTunes Media Folder tends to get lost, so you will have to manually reset the path to the folder frequently.
    3) When.....not if....the Time Capsule disk has a problem, you will lose all of your iTunes data.....because you have no backup of the ITunes Media Folder.
I've learned each of these things the hard way. If you still want to do this.....here are the instructions:

  • HELP! Cannot copy files off Time Capsule

I have a 1TB Time Capsule (DualBand) that I use like a NAS (network attached storage). Time Machine is disabled, but I manually copy files on the Time Capsule's disk when I want to back them up, and share them with other computers in my house.
I am trying to copy all of the files of the Time Capsule to a 2 TB Firewire 800 drive connected to my MacBook Pro, but I'm having a problem. About half-way through the the copy process (which is estimated to be an over-night ordeal) the Time Capsule is disconnected and I get the error:
+The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data+
+in "" could not be read or written.+
    +(Error code -36)+
Also, the disconnected Time Capsule is still visible in the SHARED portion of my Finder's sidebar, but it is impossible to connect to the disk again, unless I unplug the Time Capsule and power it back up.
Every time I try the process, I receive the same error, and have to restart my Time Capsule again. Could someone please help me get my data off my Time Capsule? I would prefer not to have to resort to ripping it open, so I can put the drive into my USB Toaster.
NOTE: I've tried repairing disk permissions on my MBP and repairing disk on my 2TB external drive. I've found no way to do any of these kinds of things on the Time Capsule's internal disk.

I don't have a direct solution to your disconnection problem, but if your 2 TB drive has a USB port, you may be able to connect it to your Time Capsule and use the "Archive" function (in AirPort Utility's Disks/Disks panel) to copy that data from the Time Capsule disk.

  • Where to file in Time Capsule

I've done a time machine backup on my Time Capsule, which shows up as a sparsebundle in my Data file in the Time Capsule.  It shows up when I double click the sparcebundle and Time Machine Backups then shows up under devices.  I'm assuming that is the correct way to look for the backup...
If I want to then save additional items to the Time Capsule, where do I save them?  In the Data file Or in the Time Capsule file along with the Data file?  My screen shot shows them inside the Data file which is where I assume they should be..?
Also, if I want to check the size of my Time Capsule, do I Get Info on the Time Capsule or Data?
    Thanks

To locate files in the backup you use TM.
See info on restore here.. Q14-17 http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
You must NOT touch the sparsebundle.. you must NOT add files inside it.. it is owned by TM and you can easily corrupt it if you mess with it.. all files into and out of the TM sparsebundle are controlled via TM.
You cannot leave the Sparsebundle mounted... that will stop TM working. It will post an error message that the TM sparsebundle is in use.
If I want to then save additional items to the Time Capsule, where do I save them?  In the Data file Or in the Time Capsule file along with the Data file?  My screen shot shows them inside the Data file which is where I assume they should be..?

You save it to Data.. although IMHO it is neater to create a folder and put files that belong together in one place.. filing everything under root directory is poor organisation.
Note.. Time Machine cannot see those files and back them up. If you delete those files from your computer at some point Time Machine will delete the file from the backup.. you will then have only a single copy.. anyway backups and original files on the same disk is pointless.
You cannot get info on the TC . it will spin fetching forever.
Data doesn't work... you can get info on folders inside data. Or the sparsebundle.
    At least on Mountain Lion.
If you want to see total disk usage.. you can find that in Airport Utility or in Time Machine.

  • Time capsule not visible on network

I'm trying to troubleshoot this situation for a colleague.
Situation: macbook air, synchronized wirelessly via time capsule. The time capsule is connected to the fixed network also. This is on our corporate network (both fixed and wifi networks). Backups via time capsule were working fine until yesterday (I see the last backup listed as yesterday).
Yesterday itunes prompted him to update his iphone to OS 5. After the update, the photo's were not synchronized. Upon synchronizing the photo's, the wrong button was clicked (my mistake, oops), and now all photo's are gone in iphoto. Now we're trying to get them back from the time capsule.
The time capsule is not visible in the network, not wired, not wireless. Connecting the macbook air via the fixed or wireless network doesn't reveal it. Airport utility says it cannot find anything. The time capsule is connected to power and network and the green light is on. I tried powercycling it, but this didn't make it appear.
    How can I resolve this?

Getting access to stuff in Time Machine is sometimes difficult.. it sounds like something has shredded the files..
Look at the info pondini gave to access the iphoto in particular.
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/15.html
Upgrading to latest OS particularly Lion in the Mac or ios5 is having all sorts of nasty consequences..
The thing is, if you have photos in there that will need recovery.. you should not use Time Machine or copy files to the TC until you have restored them. In fact the disk may need to be removed to see if they have been deleted but I have no experience with this and others might be able to give more info.

  • RE: Where are Time Machine sparsebundle files on Time Capsule?

I recently bought a Time Capsule. After some odd issues trying to get it to work in place of my Airport Extreme, it looked like it was finally working correctly.
When I first turned it on (before the problems getting it to work wirelessly), I did a full backup with Time Machine on the Capsule via Ethernet. When I clicked on the Time Capsule, I could see the sparsebundle files with a number and a date.
Somewhere down the line, I knocked all of our computers offline while trying to get Time Capsule to replace the Airport Extreme station after I ran the first backup on it.
I finally had to call Apple Support to have them walk me through setting up Time Capsule correctly and get us back online. After several attempts, we finally got it all working, but in the process the original backup files disappeared from Time Capsule, so I ran Time Machine again. It said it completed the full backup (again), and it was doing incremental backups.
My problem is, I cannot see any files on the Time Capsule when I click on it. Is that the way Time Machine/Time Capsule are supposed to work? No folder called Backup, no files. When I enter Time Machine, I see that it's backing up, but it kind of worries me that I can't SEE the sparsebundle files anywhere.
Any idea of where those files are hiding? I guess I'm used to using Backup, where I could actually see a list of files.

Time Machine stores backups over the network in the form of a sparse bundle "file". This file should show up in Finder as "ComputerName_MACaddress.sparsebundle". However, the sparse bundle is not actually a file, but a container/folder with a number of files, called bands within it.
You can access the backup files within the sparse bundle, by using Finder, as follows:
o From within Finder, click on the Time Capsule (TC) that appears under the Shared category
    o Double-click on the TC's disk name
o Double-click on the sparse bundle
It may take a while but eventually the disk image will open and you will see a folder named "Backups.backupd." This folder contains the Time machine backups.

  • Cannot access "old" sparsebundle" on time capsule

My Macbook Pro broke down. I got a back-up machine now while my mbp is away for repair. My old harddrive was put into this - but now I cannot access time machine backups on the time capsule. Instead time machine produces new sparsebundles but the old one appear not accessible - though they still show up in finder on the capsule.
I urgently need some files - how can I access the "old" sparsebundles/backups?

    mor69 wrote:
I really appreciate you guys taking your time trying to help here!!
On the sparsebundles: I can see them no problem in the finder when opening the time capsule - but they simply arent accessed by time machine
trying to repair the bundle right this minute - but I think my problem is not a corrupted file - but time machine not recognizing the file as back-up
If Disk Utility is able to repair it, the sparse bundle is probably good and will be recognized by Time Machine. If not, you're out of options.
(oh my god - am I explaining this correctly??? English after all is not my mother tongue so excuse any stuff that does not make sense, please)
You're doing fine -- better that many native English speakers!

Your pro doesn't matter.. I presume it is happily working.
Your imac setup has got messed up because you changed from a local (my book being USB type I presume) to network drive. Did you do a clean install of Lion?
Did you use the backup from the Pro on the imac? Otherwise I don't see how the Pro shows up in use previous disk. Where is Pondini when you need him??
You cannot download Time Machine as an App and replace the current version. It is built into the OS.. the only way to do it is a clean install. Unfortunately that might be the only way around the issue.
There is a number of issues that Pondini has covered in the setup issues of troubleshooting.
This is the most relevant I think. http://pondini.org/TM/B6.html
But look at the whole section B setup problems.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
If it was me, I would store all the info you need.. not using TM but using a straight copy of files.
Then clean install Lion. I doubt any of these issues would exist if you had not installed Lion over existing setup or used a different backup.
See if you can get Pondini to respond.. !!

  • Having trouble copying files to time capsule.

Hello all. Apologies if this isn't in the correct forum. I didn't see one for the time capsule. And thanks in advance for any help.
I recently purchased a new macbook pro after my old macbook pro had a lot of issues. (It had a good run, but was probably 3-4 years old.)
I was trying to copy some files from the old computer to the new computer using my time capsule as an external hard drive. I don't have a firewire cord, and the migration assistant program seemed to take far too long. So I'd hoped to just copy the files onto the time capsule, then copy them onto my new computer.
However, I've encountered several problems. A message will pop up, error -36, and state that some files cannot be copied. Rather than not copy those and copy the rest of the files, the whole process stops. I cannot go through and pick out the individual files, because I can't tell what's causing the problem until the error actually occurs.
Any advice on how to get around this? Or am I missing an easier way to transfer data (such as an itunes library)?
    Thanks.

    Yes, that's why Apple invented +Setup Assistant+ and +Migration Assistant.+

Your best bet will be to get a firewire cable and start over. Anything else will be tedious, likely have permissions problems, and be easy to miss things.
Since you've already got who knows what copied, your best option is probably to set up a temporary Admin account, log on with it and delete the one(s) you created. Be sure to delete the home folder(s), too, when prompted.
Then connect the Macs via FireWire and run +Migration Assistant.+ See: [Using Migration Assistant|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/Migrate.html]
