Cannot see Netboot volumes

I configured my brand new XServe to serve Netboot diskless images. I installed the client computer, made my image and published it on the server. Up to this point everything works fine.
When I moved the client computer to it's normal position, suddenly it does not see the network volumes when I change the startup disk. It can however connect to the server perfectly fine once it's booted from the local HD.
I also tried the "Netboot across subnet" trick on Bombich Software, but it still doesn't work : the computer hangs at the flashing globe.
When I connect the client computer on the same switch as the server, it works and I can choose the netboot volumes in the Startup disk utility.
As far as I can see, the only difference between those two situations is the network connectivity, but since everything else beside netboot seems to work fine at both places, I wonder what is broken.
*My question: What exactly needs to be allowed on the network level to let Netboot functions properly (either by automatic discovery or by hard-coded address across subnets)?*
Thanks,
Jerome Tremblay

When you re-install you boot while holding down the 'c' key. Then I would go to the menu and select Disk Utilities. See if your drive shows up.

I have made 4 extended logical drives from EMC shared storage to be visible from my two nodes on 64bit windows 2003 server. During Clusterware installation while selecting the disks for OCR and Voting file, I cannot see the raw shared volumes.
The following is the output of cluvfy utility for component shared storage accessibility,

    Checking shared storage accessibility...
Shared storage check failed on nodes "node2,node1".
Verification of shared storage accessibility was unsuccessful on all the nodes.
I also get exectask.exe encounter a problem and needed to close meassage aswell.

The issue is resolved. I formatted the shared disks with NTFS file system. Then deleted the partition and recreated extended logical volumes and now the shared storage is accessible from the clusterware instalation for the selection of ocr and voting files.
    Thanks anyways.

  • NetBoot Cannot See internal Hard Drive

I am using a Xserve G5 PowerPC G5, I use this for my netboot server. I am wanting to set this up so that I can run netboot on client machines and still see the local hard drive, however I want to be able to unmount it so that I can reimage that drive if I want or be able to run different tech tools on this. I was able to do this once or twice however I need for this to be a little bit more consistent. The image I am using runs as a diskless image, what I’m thinking is that I want to run this image diskless I just want the hard drive to be available for me to do whatever I need to do with this, any suggestions...

    afp_2U2Vgc00040A0000oM0000VU-1.2c000003 on /private/var/netboot (afpfs)
/dev/disk0s2 on /private/var/netboot (hfs, local, nodev, nosuid)
That's very weird. You appear to have both the afp share AND disk0 mounted at /private/var/netboot. That shouldn't be possible.
    mrenix wrote:
Ok so then my next question is how do I correct this???
As a workaround, you could try doing a 'mount -u /dev/disk0s2'
How did you create this image (i.e. what was the volume sourced from)? A NetBooted volume perhaps? Though I don't think that's possible... :/

  • Cannot see items in my trash bin sice upgrading to mountain lion

cannot see deleted items in my trash bin, since upgrading to mountain lion,it seems to delete items straight away.

    Back up all data now.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_
Be sure to select the whole line by triple-clicking anywhere in it. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar. A text window opens.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • AEBS cannot see both disks in 2 disk enclosure set to JBOD

I have a MacPro 3.1 and AEBS, the computer runs 10.6.8 and Win 7. All most recent updates installed on both OSes and the AEBS.  I have a generic (bought at Fry's) HORNETTER, 2 disk external USB enclosure containing two (2) 500GB hard drives, both formatted to FAT32 for easy sharing purposes with win, which is connected to the AEBS via its USB port. The enclosure is set to JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks), so I can see each one individually.  The enclosure is externally powered.  I have had problems in the past with this set-up off and on.  Now it is VERY tempermental, sometimes it works, most times not and now over the last couple months it has stopped working for all intents and purposes.
The problem I get is that the AEBS does not see both drives, only one. This happens in OS x and Win 7.
I get an error saying there is a problem with the disk, connect it to the computer directly and run Disk Utility to check for errors.  So I do this every time and it returns no errors. Both disks can be mounted no problem if connected directly to the computer.  But if I unplug it from the computer and plug it back into into the AEBS it stops working again.
I have this same problem with my HTPC Mac Mini 2.1 (C2D 2/0Ghz).  I tried connection it with the same config and got the same problem, only one disk shows of the two in the enclosure.
Is there anything I could do to resolve this? I have searched high and low for a direct answer, but only see confusing responses and nothing direct on point.  I apologize if this is a common issue.
I am not trying to do any Tim Machine backups, just using it one drive to store my media (music, video) and the other drive as a extra storage/share volume/hand backup of important files.  I like having it available off the AEBS so I can access the music and video from my HTPC Mac Mini and my DVR Windows machine, as well as using them both as a easy swap for mac files I drop there for when I'm booted into Windows.
    Any help would be appreciated.

UPDATE: I read some tips on other related issues, and so I tried connecting a POWERED USB HUB (a Targus brand 4 port AC powered USB hub I had lying around) to the AEBS and then the external enclosure to the hub.
No success, and two different problems.
In OS X I can now SEE both disks (where before  only saw one disk), but the problem now is even though I can see both disks I can only access one (the one I could NOT access before).  The disk I could access before is not visible but when I try to double click on it to mount it, i get a spinning blue circle and eventually the request times out with an error  which makes no sense, but says:
"There was an error connecting to the server “Lou's AirPort Extreme”. Check the server name or IP address, and then try again.
If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator."
When dismissed this is followed byt eh additional error message:
"The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “BACKUP” can’t be found."
On Win 7, I now cannot see the AEBS at all, and neither disk is visible.
    *sigh*
    Back to square one......
SECOND UPDATE: Connected a USB thumb drive to the Powered HUB and it shows up fine.  So now I am just totally confused.

  • Guest users cannot see or connect to shares on Snow Leopard 10.6.1

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard from 10.5. After upgrading, users connecting as "guest" to my computer cannot see any of the shares (and therefore cannot connect to them).
If I connect as my administrator user from another computer, I can see all the shares, as well as all the volumes.
I have verified that the Guest Account is enabled (Allow guests to log in to this computer) in the Accounts preference pane, and of course File Sharing is turned on in the Sharing pane, and all the shares are listed with the correct permissions.
This is a very strange and perplexing problem. Any help would be most appreciated!

If they are connecting as a registered user they can see all the shares....but as a guest they cannot...I'm trying to find what might causes that problem....I really cannot think any logical reason... Everything in my options seems to be ok... So after the 10.6.2 update your problem solved ? I think that you were very lucky man...If you find any answer to that problem please let me know...
    Anyway,Thank you for your reply!

  • Format an External HDD - Cannot see DOS ( Fat 32 )

One more important point I noticed is that for RAC on windows 2003 Enterpriser Edition Server 64bit it is must that one should automatically mount the shared disks. For this do the following on command prompt.
    c:\>Diskpart
    Diskpart> automount enable
This command will automount the shared storage on the server. This should be done manually as it is not enabled on windows environment and it should be done only once.

  • Cannot write to volume using Samba

    Hey
Im trying to connect to a shared network drive using samba. I can connect to it fine using my windows PC, but when i try to add it to my mac, using the connect to server option, i get as far as entering my username and password and it shows up in the finder, but i cannot see any of the files stored there or write any new ones. Anybody have any similar experiences?
    G

    can you open a terminal/shell and type;
    ls -l /Volumes/<your shared volume>
with your volume name, and post the results?
Kind of sound like you do not have "permission" to read/write to the share

  • Cannot see my BackUps

Well, at first I have to say: I setup TimeMachine with the leopard-beta. As it worked fine, I decided to use it even with the final release. And yes, TimeMachine is making hurly BackUps to that "old" sparse-image (as I initiated it via AirPort).
I learned, that network backups are not supported in the final release, so I plugged my Disk directly into my MBP.
So far so god, TM is backing up my files... BUT I cannot see the BackUps through the interface. I checked the name of my MBP, no difference, I opened the sparse - image, there are all the BackUps since I started in September.
How can I make them visible in my TM- Interface? I don't want to loose them
    Greetings

Message was edited by: Sven Koesling well, I cannot correct the title, sry

Well, finally I found a solution:
    1. I managed to make the mounted backup image visible: http://www.pinkmutant.com/articles/invisible.html (Hint from First Magus)
    2. Changed the name of my Mac to a name without blanks etc. (e.g: MyCompi).
    3. Changed the name of the mounted volume to the new name (e.g.: Backup of MyCompi)
    4. Changed the name of the image file to that new name (MyCompi_XXX.sparsebundle where XXX is Your MacAdress).
    5. Finally right-clicked on the TM-Icon in the Dock while the image was mounted and chose "search other TM Volumes". Now I was able to choose the mounted image.
    Everything works fine.

    Fixing a Mavericks Installation Problem
How to manage a failed OS X Mavericks installation | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews.
    Try these in order:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

The above command on 64bit win2003 servers gives error. This is due to bug 6007675. Base Bug number is 4714708. So the solution is to continue with the installation and ignore the error message.

  • Why can only some machines see netboot images at the startup screen?

I have a 10.6.6 server running as a netboot server. I have about 10 images running on the server that consist of a 10.6.6 and 10.5.8 triage partition and a 10.6.6 and 10.5.8 restore image. Now what I have noticed is that newer machines after starting up and holding down the option key will see all the available images. But on some older intel machines nothing will show up after holding the option key down accept the internal drive itself, But if you hold down the N key it WILL boot to the default image.
I have made sure and checked that the ethernet port was working on the older machines. I also made sure that I can see the images from the startup control panel. All machines can see the netboot images from the startup control panel, but older intel versions cant. However I was able to sometimes get the old white and black macbooks to see the images but others not.
Any suggestions as to why some machines will see the images at the startup screen after holding the option key and why some wont?

That, most likely, means that you have a fairly large number of images and/or they have very long names.
The number of images that can be displayed is limited by the size of the data packet which contains the NetBoot volume information. Two techniques we use to keep this in check are 1) aggressive purging of outdated images, and 2) use of shorter display names (the one seen in Startup Disk, not the one in the NetBootSP0 folder).

  • White screen - cannot see icons

After updating my iPhone 3G S, to iOS 5.0.1, my iPhone displays a white screen with thin lines running throughout the diplay.
I cannot see any of the icons and thus cannot use my phone.
Also when I press the off button while holding the home button, it sounds like the camera is tacking a picture.
I have tried to do some research on tthe web and I think what I've got is known as the "White Sreen Of Death"
Can anyone shed some light on this and suggest a fix?
    Thanks...

    Thanks for your reply.
I have tried this and it does not help. When the problem first occurred several weeks ago, I used that method and it seemed to work at that time. It would display the Apple logo then shut down,  at which point I could restart the iPhone and would resolve the issue. However, when I try this now, it does not even show the Apple logo and I can't even seem to shut it down. I have tried several things including Restoring the device with iTunes several times.
I also read somewhere on the web that discharging the battery completely and recharging it afterwards, might fix the problem. I managed to start the music player (iPod App) quite by accident by pressing the Home button and the Volume Up (or Down button) - don't know which because I couldn't see the screen, and it started to play my music. I let it play for a few days until it stopped playing. I then pressed the on/off button and the white screen appeared for a few seconds and then went black. Every time I pressed the on/off button it did the same thing so I left it turned on for a week before I attempted anything else.
About a week and a half after I had started discharging the battery, I finally plugged the device into my computer and recharged it but still the white screen came up. I tried restoring with iTunes and still the same problem.
Then I posted the original message to this group in the hopes that someone might have other suggestions.
The problem is that I don't know if this is a Software or a Hardware problem. It was working fine until I installed the 5.0.1 update and it might be coincidental that the hardware problem should show up at this time.
    Does anyone have any Ideas?
    Thanks ...
