Cannot see Windows PC on MAC (files or printer)

I am new to MAC and am trying to add new macbooks to a PC network running Vista. Everything is networked via ethernet cable and a router. I have an HP Color Laserjet 2500 hooked up to one of the PCs and downloaded the mac drivers from the internet. The file and printer sharing works fine between the PCs and the PCs can see the MACs but the MACs do not see the PCs. When I try to set up a printer and go to the Windows option, nothing is there to choose. The connection between the computers is there because they can share the internet connection and I pinged from both mac and PC and it was fine. How can I get the MACs to see the PCs and share printers? Please help.

The fax should be treated the same as a printer.
I'm not familiar wit that specific printer, but if it works like most other fax software, you should be able to select print, then instead of sending to the printer proper, you select the fax function from inside the print dialog.
scanning is a different critter altogether - the scanner software may not like (or even recognize, for that matter) scanning to/from IP. I know on our big copiers at work, network scanning takes additional configuration on the copier itself.
Perhaps your printer is similar?

  • Mac Cannot see Windows HDD Partition/ Windows cannot reformat disc?

I have installed boot camp and windows 7 64 bit on my mac pro dual quad core.
    I have 3 drives.
#1 is 1 TB and partitioned in 2 logical drives so that one is windows NTFS and one is Mac. The mac OS does not see the windows drive. In fact it appears in disk manager as UNMOUNTED and FAT when in fact its NTFS.
#2 is the drive that shipped with the mac, partitioned into 2 drives, one which boots windows (bootcamp) and 1 boots OS X. No problems.
The problem is drive #1 holds all my vido from my camcorder so I need the mac to recognize the windows drive and read the data. I copied all the data off of the NTFS partition and tried to format it in Windows. Windows says its "in use". It is not in use since Windows boots from BOOTCAMP on a different physical drive. It won't let me ignore the error, if I try it waits a few seconds and repeats the error.
I tried to erase the partion in disk manager, same issues. Even after the mac erases it into any format (Mac, Fat32, etc...), the Windows disk console will resfuse to format it claiming that its "in use".
    Any ideas?
Anyone else have the same problem? I think it has to do with the hidden 200 MB partitions that windows 7 creates and that the MAC may unintenionally mess with.

    Can anyone help?
    Maybe
    On the Win7 machine,
    1. Ignore everything to do with Homegroup.
    2. Go > Computer > Users > User; right click on User and chose Share with > Specific people; and Set to share with a specific individual or Everyone—both with Read/Write permission.
    3. Go Control Panel > Network and Sharing Options > Advanced sharing Settings, and Turn on network discovery, Turn on file and printer sharing, Turn off public folder sharing , and Turn off password protected sharing (unless sharing won’t occur without turning it on).
    4. Restart (probably not necessary, but I’d do it).
    On the Sno machine,
    1. Go System Preferences > Sharing > Check File sharing > Go Options > Enable SMB sharing.
    2. Go System Preferences > Network > Select Airport or Ethernet depending on what you are going to be using. I am assuming you will be using wireless below. Let me know if not true.
    3. Having selected Airport, select ask to join new networks and show Airport status in menu bar.
    4. Click advanced > click remember networks this computer has joined > Click Wins > Enter the ip address of your Win7 machine in the WINS server box > Enter the Win7's workgroup name in the workbook box unless it already is there (look in the drop down menu too). In all likelihood the name is workgroup, but check on the Win7 machine.
    5. Restart (probably not necessary, but I’d do it).
Try to connect to your Win7. Use Go menu > Connect to server. In trying to connect, type smb://ipaddress (of the Win7 machine). If, for some reason, you are asked to, input a user name and password, then use you user name and password for the Win7. Don't save anything to Keychain now and actually never for making network connections.

  • I cannot partition windows 7 and Mac OS X. Some help anyone?

    Hello,
Basically, i am trying to partition Windows 7 with Mac OS X on my Macbook Pro10.6.4 and when i select to partition them, it says:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved."
"Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again."
I have already backed up my computer and everything I need, but i just don't understand what else to do, because it seems it is already on this Extended (Journaled) volume. Can someone tell me what to do so i can partition it? Thanks

    One word: Restore
    That means ERASE or REFORMAT
You can use Disk Utility RESTORE or SuperDuper
You have files fragmenting the free space and in an area that needs to be used in order to add support for Windows and to set up a Master Boot Record. And it can't.
Free space can't be fragmented. And OS X doesn't consolidate free space. iDefrag can if you boot from another hard drive. There is also iPartition. Not sure of how well they work and features, never bought them.
Now that you have a bootable backup clone or TimeMachine backup, you are ready to reformat. A bootable backup insures your backup is intact and works.
This gets asked, oh, about 200 times a year for over 3 yrs.

  • Cannot extract Window driver for MAC

I have windows installed in my MacBookPro. The problem is I do not have Window driver for Mac. This is the reason why :-
I created a partition of Fat32 (that was my mistake). When I tried to load Windows using BootCamp - it did not work. It is asking me to go to Disk Utility anc conver the partition to Mac file system whcih I am unable to do that. To go round -
I have installed XP in the Fat32 partion without using Boot Camp. The problem is getting the Windows driver for Mac beucase I cannot use the Boot Camp.
Are there any way of getting Windows driver for Mac ?

You need a boot loader and that's what BootCamp establishes.

    Hi all,
I've searched Google and these forums, but I have yet to find anything relating to my issue.
I'm trying to view a PDF file, but I cannot see any text in Adobe Reader.
I've viewed it w/ the FoxIt reader, and I can see all text there.
Any idea as to what the problem w/ Adobe reader is?
I have the most up-to-date version of the reader.
    Thanks in advance.

Enable the entry 'Show large images' in the preferences of Adobe Reader.

  • Our team cannot see shared and sync'd files in our Creative Cloud account.  How can we fix this?

The team members are logged in, have loaded a test file in the Creative Cloud Files directory, uploaded them to the Cloud and made the files public, but we cannot see them in the web browser under "Creative Cloud Files".
The files seem to be there because we can send an email with a link to the files and can see them through the linke, just not in the browser.
What might we be doing wrong?

Folder sharing is not available yet. It is being worked on.
So currently a file is owned by one Adobe ID. That Adobe ID can create a public sharing link to that file. Anyone can access this link whether or not they are signed in with an Adobe ID.

  • Cannot see Windows Computer on IMAC

I have an issue and can use some help.
I have a PC running Vista on my home network. Netgear Wireless Router, connect to Comcast.  Just received my MAC and want to mount a share from the Windows PC to the MAC.
Mac does not see the PC or the share.  I have issued the SMB://192.168.1.xx  and nothing.  Both PC and MAC are on the same network.  I have verified I have have File Sharing turned on in Network Discovery center (PC).
Has anyone else had this problem?

Take a look at this article, which has some additional information about windows file sharing:

  • Can see Windows PCs from Mac, but can't see (and access) Mac from PCs

Yesterday, I ran into a strange problem which I'm not able to figure out.
I share an office with some engineers, who have their computer environment (server, network), all running Windows (XP and Vista on the PCs, Windows 2003 for the server).
Within that environment, I have 2 PCs (both XP) and an iBook G4 (Leopard 10.5.4.). I have also a printer (Epson Laser), which is connected to the office network, and an Airport Extreme Base Station.
Until last week, I could connect from my PCs to my iBook (wirelessly), and from the iBook I could connect to my PCs, the server, and via the server print on my printer (again, all wirelessly).
Over the weekend, I took out the Airport Extreme Base Station (to help with an issue at home - see my thread over at Printing), and yesterday I brought it back to the office and installed it again.
And since I re-installed the Base Station, this is the problem:
    1. from PCs, I can't see the iBook (can't attach a PC drive letter - eg. I:\), and therefore can't access it
    2. from the iBook, I can't print to my printer - furthermore, when I select the Printing preference and click "Add Printer", no printers whatsoever show up (the list stays blank), whereas before the engineers' printer (some Minolta Bizhub with Bonjour) would show up as well
    3. I can, however, access the Windows server from my iBook
Any ideas what's going on? I tried to solve this, but gave up quickly (no way I can possibly figure this out), plus I have this issue at home (can't print wirelessly to a printer attached via USB to a Time Capsule - I can, however, print to the same printer if I attach it to the previously used Airport Express!) - 2 problems and mounting headaches!
I am thinking about re-installing the whole system (take off all data, do a complete wipe and start afresh…), but don't like to spend a whole day doing this…
    Again, thanks for any advice!
    Jan

You only need one computer to configure the Base Station - and since you can easily do this from your PC, you really don't need to be able to do it from your Mac as well. I suggest you stop worrying about this, leave your Base Station running with the current firmware version, and use your PC if you ever need to make a configuration change.
Note that NO Base Station software needs to be installed on the Mac, for the Mac to be able to connect wirelessly to the Base Station. If your Mac is currently unable to establish a wireless connection to the Base Station, you have a different problem - and one that won't be solved by installing the Airport Admin Utility or downgrading firmware on the Base Station. Incidentally - what type of wireless security are you using on the Base Station - WEP or WPA? A base station configured to use WPA security will only be accessible by a Mac running at least MacOS 10.3.

  • Router cannot see Hyper-V Guest MAC address

    Greeting,
I have been trying to build a server on Hyper-V, on a host running Windows Server 2012 R2, and a wireless adapter is used.
A virtual switch was created as external, connected to the host's wireless adapter.
The guest OS is Debian 7, and the problem is it's unable to use DHCP to connect to the internet.
I have to manually specific an IP address and the subnet mask in order to access the internet in the Guest OS, say 192.168.0.50. And I set port forward to this IP for external connection to the guest, but then sometimes I cannot connect; without doing anything
it restores the connection after a while. At the same time I am keeping the MSRDP connection to tthe host so the host has not lost connecting to the internet.
When the server on Guest is not accessible from the web, I can still connect to the server within the host machine by typing the lan IP of the guest: 192.168.0.50
On checking the router, I found that two IP address 192.168.0.50 (Guest OS) and 192.168.0.15 (Host) are sharing the same MAC address (of the wireless card). It means the MAC address of the Guest OS is not seen by the router, and I suppose this is the root
    for the instability.
Would you have any ideas about the situation, and suggested solution?
    Thank you.

    An update to my issue:
Just realized the possible cause: the (freaking) router is dropping inactive machine.
Basically the DHCP issue is not solved, but it doesn't seem to be a cause after all, as long as I manually assign the IP it works, even having the  2 IPs with the same MAC on the ARP table on router. (Host connection drop has to be further investigated).
As I found that the loss of connection actually happens after a while I don't touch the web server on VM, the longer I leave it idle the more likely I cannot connect to it again. The situation is like a prolonged loading when trying to access a website,
where sometimes you can connect after a while, or you never.
What's weird is, if I somehow manage to connect to the idle VM server by multiple attempts, and that after I have restored the connection, I can reconnect to the server from another computer very quickly without any significant loading time.
On some quick searches, I found someone using Linksys router is suffering from a similar situation as I do:
    http://serverfault.com/questions/522448/application-request-routing-on-a-hyper-v-guest-intermittently-stops
So what I can try are basically 3 ways
-Change the router, not viable as I don't own it.
-Insert a wireless bridge in between
-Do something with Debian, making it periodically generate network request to the internet to keep the connection alive
Any ideas about my observation, and maybe possible solutions?
    Thank you for reading.

  • Leopard 10.5.2 cannot see Windows shared printer

I'm brand new to the Mac world and just got my Macbook on Monday afternoon. I'm trying to set up my Epson CX7400, which is connected to my Windows Vista desktop. Unfortunately, the Macbook can't see it under the add printers menu. I've tried installing Bonjour on the Windows machine, installing the Epson drivers on the Mac, joining the Windows workgroup (which apparently didn't work, because I still can't see the Mac on the Windows PC and vice versa, even after setting up a new location to ensure that it saved the settings) and installing the newest Windows drivers on the PC.
So, I'm all out of ideas and Google has run dry for me. Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks very much. I saw a lot of info about CUPS, gutenprint, and samba out there, but not much context to it.
For folks just reading this from google:
The easiest way to add a Windows printer, in most cases, is to check Gutenprint, which is included with OS X, to see if it supports your printer. (http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3)
If not, try searching google for "<your printer model> cups driver".
Bring up the add printer dialog under system preferences and right click on a blank space on the toolbar. Choose customize toolbar. Drag the "Advanced" icon onto the toolbar. Then, click it.
Under type, select Windows. Go down to "Print Using" and choose "Select a driver to use...". Pick your driver in the list. "SMB://" should have autofilled in the URL form. From this, you'll add the name of the PC to which the printer is attached. Say you've set its network name as Bob, for example. You'll put "smb://bob", and then you'll add the shared name of the printer. In my case, it's an Epson CX7400, and I've shared it as EpsonCX7400. Keep in mind, Mac OS doesn't like names longer than 12 characters or shares with special characters like $ and @ and things like that. (If you're unsure, you could always just share it from your Windows PC as printer1 or something.) Were that the case, your URL field would read "smb://bob/printer1". If you named it something like mine, "smb://bob/epsoncx7400". If your printer requires a username and password to print, you'll put "smb://<username>:<password>@bob/printer1", substituting your username and password in the <username> and <password> spots respectively.
Afterward, if you've done all that properly, it should work. Hopefully, anyway. It did for me. Well, it showed up anyway. I've not actually tried to print from it, yet.

  • Colour problem, inverted? cannot see a thing on any file

    Hello,
I've got iWork 09, and ive just noticed that this problem seems to be on all 3 of the programs.
What happens is that no matter what i open, existing file, template, you just cant see it, you have to highlight it in order to know whats on there lol. For some reason it worked a couple weeks ago when i updated my C.V, but when i click on say, business cards, you can't see a thing. I just updated to 9.03 but no success.
I'd upload a screenshot here but i can't seem to be able to, so instead, if you've got an account at MacRumors then here: http://att.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=205124&d=1259506729
    Many thanks

Wow, those really knock my socks off! The problem is that Windows 7 is a genuine improvement on what they had before, Snow Leopard didn't even do any elementary household cleanup.
They may have improved the plumbing and wiring but everything that was broke and in your face is still there.
Plus the plumber and electrician did a bit more damage whilst they were at it.
The biggest "bad thing" is the difficulties in combining PDFs. It can be done, but does not work as well as before.
Seems like Apple takes some of the "procedural" tasks in OSX up yet another notch of irritation in every version.

  • Cannot see optical drive or read files from superdrive

This is my first ever posting so I apologize if I’m giving too much info.
A couple years ago I installed a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR 107D in the top bay of my G4 (mirrored doors) and put the combo drive (Philips CDD5105) in the bottom bay. Back then I was running OS 9. All worked well, and continued to after I decided to start using OS X. I continued updating all the way up to 10.4.8 (I have avoided updating to 10.4.9 since it caused issues on our IBook). About a year ago the combo drive would come and go (in the system profiler) but the super drive was still working fine. Over the past year strange things began happening. If I would insert a kids games CD it would cause a kernel panic. So I simply used our Ibook to let my daughter play reader rabbit. For about the past 6 months the combo drive has not been recognized in system profiler. But other than the kids cds the super drive seemed to be working well reading & writing both CDs & DVDs. Then it began to error out burning CDs saying they could not be verified but the CDs were turning out ok it was burning DVDs without a problem. Within the last couple weeks it stopped recognizing files correctly. If it is an image or ai document it would say the files could not be opened and it would also not open installers of any kind. I finally decided to try to get it fixed. Last weekend I ran Tech tool & optimized the hard drives and low and behold it was fixed. Combo drive was back & working, Super drive was working correctly & the kids CDs did not cause problems either. This lasted for about 4 days of very infrequent use and all the problems were back. Then yesterday after being off for a couple days I started it up and all was ok again. So I left it on over night planning to make a disk image of it today. At this point I had a theory that my set up might be causing the problem. Since I had been running OS X it was installed and running on a second hard drive I had installed connected to a slave bus while OS 9 was still on the original hard drive connected to the master bus. So I cleaned off the main hard drive and thought since it was working correctly I could transfer the system & apps to the other hard drive and save the working disk image. But of coarse in the middle of transferring files around the combo drive vanished again and the super drive won’t read files correctly. So I decided to reinstall from my OS 10.4 DVD on the main hard drive and reinstall all my apps. But I can’t get it to read or boot up from the DVD. I tried running Tech Tool again with no luck.
Could this be as simple as a bad preference or something?
    Here are the machine specs
    Machine Name: Power Mac G4
    Machine Model: PowerMac3,6
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed: 867 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 1.75 GB
    Bus Speed: 133 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.4.8f2
    PowerPC G4 dual 867   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The only thing that seems strange about it being the drives is that whenever the combo drive disappears from the menu the super drive will simultaneously not read files correctly and cause kernel panics etc. And when the combo drive can be seen both drives work with no problems. Would that system still point to failing hardware? It just seems that since it's either both or neither that something that effects them both would be the culprit. Since I posted I was able to reload tiger & after the restart the problem returned. Then another restart it was fine all day. To your point replacement drives are reasonably priced & easy to install so I probably should just get one & try it.
    Thanks for your advise
