Cannot seem to handle AVCHD files correctly

OK so what am I doing wrong??
Importing from a Canon HG10 camera is a disaster so far. I can import the files into FCE ONLY as a batch by importing the entire folder. If I try and import a single file I get an error message. Once the files ARE imported, I cannot see them play. If I play a clip, all I see is the thumbnail. No video plays.
On the other hand if I do the same thing in iMovie 8 I can see the clips play alright. Is there a setting I may have set wrong in FCE or is my computer to weak to handle this program (Macbook Pro 2.33mhz processor with 2gb ram)?
One other thing...I have a copy of Voltaic. If I convert the avchd files into mov files and open them i FCE, the play in slow motion!!

Did you try trashing your preferences?<<</div>
No, how do I do that?
By the tone of the responses so far, I am getting the impression that I SHOULD be able to see the video clips play alright. Is this so? So far nobody has answered my question as to whether or not my computers are powerful enough. Guess they are.
Is anyone familiar with Perian? I had to download and install it before AVCHD files that I converted to .mov files using Voltaic would play properly in FCE. Now that I think about it, since I have installed Perian I have not yet tried native AVCHD files, only the converted ones. I cannot try this till I get home tonight, but if anyone here is familiar with Perian, can you tell me if THIS might actually help the native AVCHD files as well?

If the files have a permissions password, you need to know it, and remove security, before you can edit the files. That is correct.

Hi,  I've just purchased and installed an upgrade from Lightroom 4 to 5.  It doesn't seem to handle raw files authored with a new Nikon D750 camera.  I spoke to the sales rep about this and he gave me a link to the 8.6 DNG converter page with instructions to download.  8.6 only works with Mac OS 10.7-10.9, according to the page.  I'm running Yosemite, Mac 10.10.  Please can you tell me my options?  Lightroom 4 worked beautifully with my older cameras' raw files so I would like to continue using the application.  What should I do?  How soon will Lightroom 5 be able to deal with raw files from a D750.  Many thanks, Adam.

Until the next version of Lightroom is released, you need to use the DNG Converter version 8.7RC to convert your RAW photos to DNG and then import the DNGs into Lightroom.

  • Premiere Pro CS4 does not handle AVCHD Files well.

Loaded the master collection of CS4 when it first came out.  I had purchased CS4 for the AVCHD file format.  I had no problems using Premiere Pro until I ugraded to version 4.0.1 in March of this year then all AVCHD file selections dissappeared.  Hence, I could not create new AVCHD projects and the existing projects did not fuction properly.  I have been through a series of uninstalls (and deactivations) and reinstalls.  Reinstalls did not work.   Had to delete by renaming the C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Installers\7e74552a59eaf9fafd13f90894ac9bd to get the reinstall to work.  I have also used Windows Install Clean Up to remove all Adobe CS4 files that the windows "Add or Rmove Programs" did not remove.  When I did get the reinstall to work, Premiere Pro would work for awhile then became slow to the point the project became unusable.  Tried the all upgrades again and again the selection of AVCHD files dissappeared.  I do not need the AVCHD Intra capability.  The last uninstall I just uninstalled Premiere.  I could not reinstall Premiere until I uninstalled the entire master collection than the reinstall of just Premiere succeeded.  Premiere was totally unusuable.
Has anyone had similiar issues with Premiere Pro and AVCHD files and were you able to resolve the problem?  I am considering removing all Adobe products, including past versions and trying the reinstall again, or create another profile and install just the Adobe products, or - the last resort - reformating my hard drive and starting over again.   I would like to get Premiere Pro working again properly before reformating.
Previous versions of Adobe have worked with no problems.

  • I have iMovie '11, and I am unable to access mpeg HD video files that I want to edit.  The files are fine (I can open and watch them using VLC), but I cannot seem to import the files into iMovie. File Import does not work.  Any suggestions??

More detail: I have a bunch of mpeg HD video files that were shot on a SONY HDR-HC3 Handycam camcorder.  I would like to edit these into a single video production.  I can access and view the mpeg files using VLC (Quicktime does not work with them).  However, I seem to be unable to get the mpeg files to interface with iMovie '11 -- I cannot use the File --> Import command, nor can I drag-and-drop them into iMovie.
Is there something anyone might suggest to get this to work?  Or are these files incompatible with iMovie?  If so, I assume I must purchase a different video editing software program (e.g. Adobe Premeir Pro).  Suggestions???
Many thanks in advance for your time and consideration

Yes, I tried that.   The files were ordered by their original numbers as imported from the camera, but I batched them through Phocoshop to downsize all of them into a more manageable file size.   I opened that destination folder from quick time  from where it said select image sequence.   I clicked on the first one and opened it.   The result was a large image with an arrow indicating a movie was ready to go.   When I pressed the arrow, though, I realized it had only imported that one frame so there was no movie.   The files are Jpgs and are about 450 KB each.
To your knowledge are there any links to iMovie tutorials or quick time tutorials that may address this situation?  Maybe there will be one I haven't looked at yet.
        Thanks

    Hi all,
In an ISA 4.0 application I want to read a properties file from a JSP to decide whether or not to execute some specific JavaScript code. I want the properties file because in it I can easily configure this externally. I put my properties file in /WEB-INF/classes.

    Hi Kishor,
Thank you for taking the time!
I agree, this issue may have to do with the deployment. There is however a remark in the <a href="http://java.sun.com/products/servlet/2.3/javadoc/javax/servlet/ServletContext.html">ServletContext</a>  interface documentation on methods <a href="http://java.sun.com/products/servlet/2.3/javadoc/javax/servlet/ServletContext.html#getResource(java.lang.String)">getResource()</a> and <a href="http://java.sun.com/products/servlet/2.3/javadoc/javax/servlet/ServletContext.html#getResourceAsStream(java.lang.String)">getResourceAsStream()</a> that may also be of interest here:
"The servlet container must implement the URL handlers and URLConnection objects that are necessary to access the resource."
Is this remark of relevance to the subject, or is this thought too far fetched? Mind you, the documentation also states that "This method allows the servlet container to make a resource available to servlets from any source. Resources can be located on a local or remote file system, in a database, or in a .war file". It should, therefore, be possible to read a file from disk???

    Hi Bobby,
Yes, it is by design. By default, Windows Server only accepts two concurrent administrative sessions (Administrative Mode). It means that only two administrators can work on the server at
    the same time.
If you would like more concurrent sessions, you need to purchase RDS CALs, install Terminal Services related server roles with proper configurations on the server.

  • Should I convert my MTS (AVCHD) file to another file type before editing with elements 10

I know premiere elements 10 has project settings for working with AVCHD footage but after doing a bit of reading about how AVCHD (MTS) files are a lot harder for your computer to work with I'm thinking it might be better to convert my raw video files to another video file type before editing with premiere elements 10.
I have a reasonably good computer, but it's only a laptop with 361gb free memory, radeon graphics card, core i5 processor and 8GB ram.
If I should convert these files first what file type should I convert them to without loosing too much video quality and where can I find a program to convert them.
    Many thanks
    Sally

I have a reasonably good computer, but it's only a laptop with 361gb free memory, radeon graphics card, core i5 processor and 8GB ram.
My granddaughters and I have been using one of those to edit videos taken in (two) Sony and (one) Panasonic cameras.  The computer is a mid grade Toshiba laptop that is about three years old.  The cameras were purchased after the computer.  Our computer does not have a graphics card, but the other specs are about the same.
I know premiere elements 10 has project settings for working with AVCHD footage but after doing a bit of reading about how AVCHD (MTS) files are a lot harder for your computer to work with I'm thinking it might be better to convert my raw video files to another video file type before editing with premiere elements 10.
I didn't read that until after we had made videos.  The issue is the project preset that is set when you open a new project. If you guess wrong, PrE10 tells you so when you slide the first clip to the timeline.
There is confusion about AVCHD because there is a 1.0 and a 2.0.  The "high" setting for many cameras the last couple of years was 1080p60.  That did not become part of AVCHD until last July.  Now it is and is called 2.0.  PrE10 specs include AVCHD 1.0, so the 1080p60 is "officially" unsupported.   I didn't know that, so I tried a few presets when my files were 1080p60.  A preset of 720p60 worked best.
The "work harder" part primarily has to do with the preview window during editing.  If it is not going smoothly there will probably be a red line above the clip.  Pressing "Enter", getting a cup of coffee and patience will make the red line go away and the preview will be smoother.  The relationship between project presets and final output is a mystery.  My experience is that the presets have only to do with real time preview and little to do with output.  Output requires an entire re-encoding for the chosen viewing platform.  PrE10 seems to ignore the project presets, uses all the markers set in editing and builds the final products from scratch.
If I should convert these files first what file type should I convert them to without loosing too much video quality and where can I find a program to convert them.
Steve and Bill invest a lot of time here helping people like you and me.  But, my experience is that they are wrong.  I see no need to convert the files.  Conversion always has the risk of loosing a little picture quality.  PrE10 seems to handle AVCHD fine.  Let it do the final render using the actual source clips.
Sally, consider upgrading to version 11 where AVCHD 2.0 and 1080p60 is included.  I have.  Processing is a little smother.
    Bill
PS:  Please, with all due respect to Bill and Steve who work hard here, I disagree based only on experience with 3 cameras and one computer.  User experience varies!

  • When will quicktime handle avchd already ?!?

I was hoping with the release of Leopard we would see an all new Quicktime that could handle avchd file natively ! It sure would be nice to copy a m2ts file over to the mac and just ' play ' it. It would also be nice to just use quicktime to do simple cuts and trims of the file and then save it in its native format would be super nice..... is this gonna happen ? Is it in the pipeline ?
I tried using Nero8 for the pc and while it plays the file its just not Quicktime... throw us a bone Apple

As far as I understand it, it's not the manufacturers but the AVCHD standard that allows SD AVCHD (by which I mean 480i/576i) to use PCM (1,500 kbps) and limits HD AVCHD (by which I mean 720p/1080i/1080p) to AC3 (640 kbps).
    Winston:
As I indicated previously, I was only reviewing the the basic capabilities and not a "white paper" document delving into the technical specifics. As to use of PCM as opposed AC3, it is logical to me and the workflows I use as a home consumer. Will readily agree that an avid audiophile would likely consider 7.1 PCM far superior to AC3 mono, stereo, 5.1 or even 7.1 multichannel in the same way some videophiles now refuse to watch SD TV programming. For instance, at this moment, I am only using a mono 64 Kbps AAC audio channel for today's "batch list" containing Santaclause Conquers the Martians, Teenagers from Outer Space, Mole Men Against the Son of Hercules, Hercules Against the Moon Men, Hercules and the Captive Women, Hercules and the Tyrants of Babylon, Hercules Unchained, The Lost Jungle, Mesa of Lost Women, Assignment: Outer Space, and Laser Mission. Frankly, the harder decision for me was deciding whether or not to retain what is left of the faded, color-casted content or to simply store it as a B&W of better viewing quality. Like QTKirk, I am a creature of habit and tend to resist change. And, as you can easily see from my profile, am quite satisfied sticking to the older tape devices which, as you yourself have pointed out in the past, in and of themselves function as "source" media archives. To put it another way, my personal outlooks determine what seems logical to me. If others see things differently and their "logic" has a somewhat take, then that is also fine with me and is what makes the world go round.
    QuickTimeKirk:
Really had to chuckle when I read your comment, sitting here as I am in the middle of converting files for TV which have, over the last half dozen years been converted to VCD, SVCD, DVD, QVGA iPod, and now to a single VGA iPhone/iPod/TV file format for management, storage, and viewing. Can only assume that if I live to see the day when we are storing audio/video content in a crystal lattice, that I will likely still be converting these same files to that medium. (Especially funny since I had to order another 1 TB LaCie drive for additional storage space just this week and it arrived only moments ago.)
In any event, sorry about getting so far off the OP's original subject. Take care all...

  • I seem to have lost Sony AVCHD files while importing them into iPhoto. The 50p files were not visible in the Import screen. iPhoto 9.6.1.

    System: Yosemite 10.10.2
    Iphoto: 9.6.1
iPhoto 9.6.1 does not seem to recognize 50p AVCHD files from my Sony WS350x camera, so they are not imported, but are deleted from camera when the question is asked in the importscreen !!!
Why is that ? I am not happy....
Workaround: Should I import the media files with Sony's Playmemories sw first ?
    Herman

The problem with AVCHD is that there are a wealth of codecs and very little standardisation further, these aren't files, but clusters of interlinked files that make up the data stream.
    So read this
Using AVCHD video with iPhoto '11 - Apple Support
Bear in mind that not all Codecs are supported.
As an FYI: A note on AVCHD: This format was developed for people who are shooting to edit the material afterwards. If you're shooting to edit, then iMovie or Final Cut are the correct home for this material. If you're not shooting to edit consider using one of the other video formats on your Camera.

    Hi Matt,
I generally create an empty array (something like $out = @()) at the top of the script and then use $out += $desiredOutput inside of the foreach loop.
Outside of the loop, you can then pipe $out to Out-File or Export-Csv, depending on your needs.

I have now transfered my files of ripped CD's to my iTunes library three times Since upgrading to iTunes 11 and Windows 8. On each occassion, the conversion seems to occur fine, the files play, but when I close my computer and return the next day, iTunes says it cannot locate any of those files. Three times. Beginning to lose my temper. Advice? Suggestions? Could the fact that my original library is located on a network drive have anything to do with it? Thanks for your help, all.

    Repair security permissions
Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Security tab and click Advanced. If necessary grant your account and system full control to this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to replace permissions on child objects which will repair permissions throughout the library. This is the XP dialog but Windows 7/8 shouldn't be too different.
Repeat for the media folder if it isn't a subfolder of the iTunes folder.
