Cannot select text on a self-made pdf from scan

I have Reader 9.5.2 on a Mac G4 with OS 10.4.11.
I scanned a page of a C18 German book printed in the old Gothic script and converted the scan to pdf. So this is not a case of permissions in a pdf document received from someone else. I want to convert the font to a modern one by selecting the relevant part of the text and inserting it into a Word or a TextEdit document or by using the 'Save as...text' facility in Adobe Reader in order to export the text to Word. If I can get the text into Word or TextEdit, I can then change the font. But I cannot select any text, nor export the text. As I have said, this is not a matter of permissions in a document received from someone else; the pdf document was made from my own scan. If anyone can help, I should be most grateful; it would save a great deal of typing.

Thanks for this. It seems logical that OCR for a family of typefaces (Gothic, Blackletter, Fraktur) that ceased to be used in most of Europe by the C18 or earlier, but was still used well into the C20 in Germany and Austria (it was still taught in the primary school in Vienna which I attended as a small boy before the war) would most likely only be available in Germany. I think it's going to be typing and not OCR for me!

  • Cannot Select Text That Use Certain Fonts

I have some PDF files where I cannot select the text because they use certain fonts (monotxt for example) when I change the font to Arial and recreate the PDF, then I can select the fonts for copy and paste. My question is how to add fonts that Adobe can recognize for selection.

The fonts are invisible to selection. I cannot select them at all. I do have the license for these fonts. I did some further tests and found that it only happens when I make a PDF from my AutoCAD application and use the monotxt font type. I guess it could be a problem with the AutoCAD application and the creation of the PDF and not the Adobe Reader.

  • Cannot select text in mail

I am using Mail in Yosemite. In both new and replying to emails I cannot select the text. Do I need to turn some kind of protection off? This has happened since the last update of Yosemite on 22 April.

From my experience,  it depends on the web page.  Snopes, for example, uses a java script that preventes one from selecting text, and that initially fooled me into thinking that aplplied to all pages in Safari 5.1. Not so; I can select text in other pages.
David Kirk at Tech Recipes suggested this override on this particular kind of java script:
"... just past the following into the address bar of your browser and press ENTER:
    javascript:void(document.onselectstart=null)
      Worked swell for me.

  • With FF 10, when accessing fields: no cursor appears, cannot select text, no visual indication that you have accessed a field.

When clicking in a field to enter text (as in this text box), no visual indicator appears (i.e., blinking cursor) to let you know that you have accessed the field. In addition, when selecting text in the field, there is no indicator that you have selected text (not highlighted). The only way to know is to start typing or to try and cut the text or paste text. It is not intuitive at all.

You may be experiencing this bug that will be fixed in Firefox 10.0.1, possibly released later this week.

  • Text problems with printing to PDF from AutoCAD 2011

When we print to PDF from AutoCAD, the text in the PDF looks wrong/bad.  It takes on a jagged appearance and doesn't look anything like what the font is supposed to look like.  Any suggestions?

Yup. It's not that it won't do it, it is just limited to 129". Thanks for the thought. When you print in Acrobat you can see the document size and the page size the program is assuming below the print window. The properties have been set, document adjusted, page size customized. It works exactly as it's designed (according to Adobe help, their knowledge base, etc) but only up to 129". Can do it at any size, decminal, etc. up to and including 129 inches. Prints beautiful, doesn't get chopped no issues at all. Just hits a wall at 129". Been doing it with blueprints for years. Just never needed it this big. In my case it's not a printer/plotter limitation. It's the Adobe PDF printer which is advertised to be able to cusomize page size to 15,000 inches.
Tried customizing in post script, no luck there either.
Again, I very much appreciate the suggestions....

Did you install all the required components:

    GETTEXT
and so on there are two others.
    If so restart computer.
then go to control System preference  and look for sane control panel and open up. look for list of scanners ans uncheck all but for your brand of scanner.
    Close.
Then cycle off and on the Scanner either unplug power or unplug and plug the USB cable.
Now go to Acrobat and choose Document > Scan to Pdf and the select SANE.
Now when set up, you can set some of the other setup adjustments. when you get adjustments set push the scan button in lower left corner.

  • Cannot select text, Export or Save As...in Pages after update to 9.1.

When I put the cursor in the document, clicking will not cause the editing bar to appear. Select All does not work. All other programs on the computer work normally. Also, when I try to export, clicking "Next..." in the dialog box where the file type to export is selected produces no result. Save As... also produces no follow up window. Thankfully, I am able to edit the same document normally in Pages on my iPad. Export to Word works there.
I have tried reinstalling from the disk, re updating (update 9.0.5 gives an error message when I try to open my files, and 9.1 will not let me do anything with them once they open).
Any advice would save me a lot of retyping.

First thing to do before trying to re-install, remove every files related to the apps.
I posted a simple script which does the job for you.
If you don't do that, some old files will not be replaced and the failure will continue.
Before reinstalling the clean way, it would be interesting to run the app from an other user account.
Doping that will tell us if the wrongdoer is in your original user account or if it is amond thethousands of files shared by every users.
The uninstaller is available on my iDisk (address below)

  • Can you retain text highlighting when exporting to PDF from InDesign?

    Hi,
I have several publications that are now going to be reviewed by another individual and I was planning to export them to PDF.
However, I've already highlighted bibliographic references, table call outs, figure call outs in the InDesign file using different colors and I was wondering if there is a way to retain that highlighting when exporting to PDF? Just thought it might make their life a little easier since I already have all that done in the file.
    Thanks!

Ah ha! Got it! All I needed was your prompt! I looked to make sure that it was set up as conditional text and noticed the Show/Hide option at the bottom of the pop-up. (I knew I saw something before that would allow this, but couldn't remember where!)
    Thanks for jogging my memory!

  • Handwritten text missing when I create pdf from word document

I have signed (as 'ink') a word document when using a tablet PC.  When I convert the document to a pdf, the handwritten signature has disappeared.  How can I stop this please?  It is not a digital signature.

Please indicate the versions of WORD and Acrobat. Also, tell us just how you are creating the PDF. It may be that Deepak's suggestion works, but he has also made an assumption about how you are creating the PDF.

  • Cannot print to any printer, or to pdf, from any program

I have successfully installed 2 different printers (Canon iRC2880 and Epson DBAA77) but when I choose to print to either, or to PDF in any program a dialogue box says that it can not print due to an 'unknown problem'. I have deleted and re-installed printers and I have tried all the stages here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3140
    including the reset printer system

Hopefully some of this may help:
    Tutorial: Resolving common printer problems
Mac OS X offers a robust printing system with built-in support for hundreds of devices from a wide body of manufacturers. It's not without flaws, however, and printers often become unrecognized or non-functional after a significant Mac OS X update. Printers connected through hubs or AirPort base stations can also exhibit some frustrating issues.
Below is a run-down of the most generally successful printer workarounds. Keep trying until one of them sticks.
Use Printer Setup Repair This tool lets you verify properties of the root user, the Printing Services (lp) user, and Print Operators (lp) groups, reset the printing system, perform CUPS maintenance and more. Run through its set of maintenance tasks before delving into further printer troubleshooting.
See how to use it in this article.
Re-install CUPS If you are experiencing printer issues after applying an incremental Mac OS X update, problems may have occurred with your CUPS installation during the update process.
The file is available from this Web site: http://www.cups.org/software.php, and you should use the latest file with a .dmg extension.
Delete then re-add printers/Reset printing system Open Printer Setup Utility, located in Applications/Utilities and look at the "Printer List" Highlight and delete all entries.
Alternatively, go to the "Printer Setup Utility" menu at the top of the screen and select "Reset Printing System".
Click the "Add" button and re-add your printer(s).
Gutenprint and usbtb Some users have been able to resolve printer communication issues by installing the excellent open-source Epson printer drivers available as part of the Gutenprint package (formerly known as Gimp-print) and usbtb, a CUPS back-end for USB printing.
Remove non-required drivers Removing extraneous drivers from /Library/Printers(name of manufacturer) can sometimes resolve printer issues. Remove files that are for other models than your own.
Re-install drivers Re-installation of printer drivers from original media or from a Web download (either directly through the manufacturers site or via a search by model/manufacturer on VersionTracker) can resolve some printer issues.
Try disconnecting from network In some cases, LAN-connected printer, seemingly broken by the Mac OS X update can restored to normal operation by simply disconnecting the device from the network then re-connecting it.
"Communicator Error" -- try power cycling If you receive a "Communication Error" message when attempting to print after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.5, the first workaround you should try is power cycling the printer, as well as disconnecting then re-connecting it to the Mac.
Connecting directly to the Mac If you are having printer problems and are using an external USB hub, try connecting the printer directly to your Mac.
One reader who had success with this method writes:
"Unfortunately the update to Mac OS X 10.4.6 has eliminated the ability to use my Lexmark Z600 series USB printer on my iMac G5 20" iSight (rev C).
"I resolved the problem via the following: I unplugged my external USB hub and plugged the printer directly to my computer."
Disconnect from AirPort and reset For those who are using printers connected to an AirPort Express, Extreme or another wireless device with USB connections, you might want to try the following:
    1. Disconnect the printer from the AirPort unit (or other router)
    2. Wait a few minutes
    3. Plug it back in
    4. Restart the base station unit
    5. Check for your printer to appear in AirPort Admin Utility (located in Applications/Utilities)
Print one copy In some cases, using print one copy instead of the standard print command can result in elimination of crashes that occur during printing.
Try IP printing instead of AppleTalk Some Macs are unable to see AppleTalk printers that are located on the local AirPort (or other wireless) network. Several users have been able to workaround this issue by using IP printing instead of AppleTalk. Delete .plist files Though this workaround will erasing current printer settings, try deleting the following files from ~/Library/Preferences:
    • com.apple.print.custompresets.plist
    • com.apple.print.PrintingPrefs.plist
    • com.apple.print.PrinterProxy.plist
    • com.apple.print.PrintCenter.plist
    • com.apple.print.favorites.plist
then re-establishing your printer in Printer Setup Utility (located in /Applications/Utilities/ by clicking the "Add..." button and following the on-screen steps.
Re-apply combo updater Try re-applying the current version of the Mac OS X combination updater, available from Apple's download page. Certain printer-related components can be damaged during the Mac OS X update process, or otherwise, and re-installing the combo updater may replace these faulty parts.
Last resort -- Archive and Install As a last resort, try performing the somewhat tedious Archive and Install process, then re-upgrading to the current version of Mac OS X.

  • Cannot select landscape photos as a desktop background from iPhoto events.

In the desktop preferences screen, when choosing a desktop background, I am able to see all of the normal options at the left. However, when I choose an image from the "iPhoto Albums" section, only vertically oriented images work. Landscape-oriented images don't update to the background (I get the basic Apple Blue.)
It appears to randomly effect my iPhoto albums, as some events have the problem, some do not, regardless of date of event or camera used.
When I add a folder and select the file manually (from the option at the bottom of the list), I have no problems... all images look fine.
I should also add that I do not allow iPhoto to manage my images, I manage my Photos folder and have the "Copy photos into the iPhotos library" option turned OFF.
I'm not sure if this is an iPhoto '08 problem or a Leopard problem, as I upgraded both at the same time during a fresh install.
PS - I've done most of the other trouble shooting things on Apple's support site, like creating a new iPhoto album and reimporting known problem-images, fixing permissions, re-creating the albumdata.xml file, etc. I even removed special characters from the Event Names and reset my keywords (I wasn't using them, anyway...)
    Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for your help!

    SIGH
Thanks for the suggestion, but it did not fix the problem. Since the general population uses iPhoto with the "copy files to the iphoto library" option turned ON, I decided to offload my images to an external drive and create a new library on my laptop, letting iPhoto do the organizing. (This is a big step for me, being an ex-windows user!)
A sample of images imported to the new iPhoto library seemed to register fine with the finder. Changing desktop images in the desktop prefs panel worked fine. All seems well and I'm looking forward to not having to manage the image folders and simply letting iPhoto import directly from the SD cards I use in my DSLR...
    EXCEPT...
I can't seem to get through an import session without Leopard crashing on me. I get the dreaded dark-gray waterfall and the "please restart your computer" message in 65 different languages. Admittedly, I'm importing 5000+ images from an external FW800 drive, but still!
So here's my question to y'all:
Do I start importing a folder at a time and keep my fingers crossed, or should I consider a fix more drastic (like re-installing iPhoto?) Does this even sound like an iPhoto problem? Do I have a deeper issue (like a bad install of Leopard?) Or, is this just early-adopter syndrome with brand-new versions of iLife and Leopard, and I need to deal with it until Apple patches the holes?
I've had this system crash on me 5 times in the last three days, and it's getting old. What is this, Vista?

  • Sync not Self made Foto from Iphone on PC

    Hey there!
I have a big Problem and i search so long, without a solution =(
I lost my Laptop and with my laptop all my Privat Picture Albums!
I know i´m stupid because i not saved in twice.
so i only have my Personal Foto Albums with 2500 Photos on my iphone!
And now i want to know how i kan Sync my Photo Albums back from my Iphone to my Pc.
Thanks so much for support and sorry for my bad english =(

Thanks Jason. I clicked on link you included in your post and read the info on that webpage.  It seems that the problem might have been that the "Autofill" feature was on, so even songs that were unchecked in iTunes were still taking up space on my iPhone.  The description of "Autofill" on the iTunes page says:
"With either syncing method, you can also fill any available space on your device with a random selection of songs by using Autofill."
I  think this feature is really annoying and that iTunes should not automatically have it checked for all iPhones.
Thankfully, I was able to get my iTunes sync options set up so that only the songs I've checked are properly taking up space on my phone.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Creating PDF from scan

What are steps for getting OCR of scanned document so I can edit it?
After scanning document, it opens in Acrobat but doesn't seem to be editable, only comment-able.
How can I get document to be a mix of text and suporting images that I can edit, change font, size, content, etc of text, and resize, alter images, etc.?
Adobe Customer Support mentioned something about exporting or opening Acrobat document in MS Word then saving as PDF, but I can't seem to figure out a way to do this.

    Hi, Monique.
After recognizing (and saving) you can select the text and copy it as text (rather than graphic), right? Me, too. I'm running Acrobat 8 Pro.
But I've also been unable to actually edit the text in the PDF itself. Perhaps I'm missing something as well. Maybe someone else here will have some wisdom.
I've tried using the Touch Up Text tool from Tools-Advanced Editing; no joy. In Acrobat 8 Help I found this:
You can add or replace text only if the font used for that text is installed on your system. If the font isnt installed on your system but is embedded or subsetted in the PDF, you can make changes only to color, word spacing, character spacing, baseline offset, or font size.
Interestingly enough, I just tried this with a recognized-text PDF with Times font. I selected a character with the Touch Up Text tool, hit Delete, and the character remained. However, while I can still see the character in the document I can no longer select it with the Touch Up Text Tool. Hmm!
