Cannot select tracks on ipod classics through Itunes.

Hi
Once I connect my new IPOD to my mac, the IPOD itself shows up and the list of music on the IPOD shows up in ITunes, but I edit/select tracks at all. Its as if they are locked. Any idea how to overcome this?

If the songs are "greyed out" it's because you have the iPod set to transfer songs automatically. That is also why the padlock icon appears at the bottom of iTunes next to the space used/available.
If you want the songs to be bold and selectable/editable, then you need to change to manage the content manually.
Please note that by editing/changing the songs on your iPod in this manner, the changes will not affect the songs in iTunes, only on your iPod.

  • Tried to Sync my ipod classic through itunes 11.2 on my new vaio laptop

Haviing tried everything from restoring multiple times, to resetting to jumping on one leg and crossing my fingers nothing has worked
I got a new laptop, tranferred all my music, got the latest version of itunes 11.2, restored my ipod so it would sync with the new library.
    WORST MISTAKE I EVER MADE
its completely destoryed my ipod classic, it freezes, i've uninstalled and reinstalled itunes, I down graded to 10.7,
Then I thought maybe its the laptop/windows 8 so i connected it to my old laptop windows 7, restored it and exactly the same issues, which have never in the year I ve had my ipod classic have I had
now having done a manual check of the hardrive
    it states
    retracts: 21
    reallocs:16376
    pending sectors: 0
    power on hours:61
    start/stops 6638
    temp current 29c
    min:15c
    max: 55c
Is there anything that can be done that won't cost me an arm and a leg?

I'm having sync issues too since I've updated to 11.0.4.  My ipod 160 will no longer sync properly or will hang when attempting to sync yet my 4th gen touch doesn't have any problems.  I am thinking about uninstalling it and rolling back to an older version of itunes.

  • I am running 4 ipod classica through one computer and one itunes account/profile.  The ipods belong to me, husband and 2 kids.  How can the kids now get their own accounts but keep the stuff I have already downloaded for them?  They have their own laptops

I am currently running 4 ipod classics through my own account/profile on itunes.  They belong to me, my husband and 2 kids.
The kids are getting older now and have their own laptops.  I would like them to have their own itunes accounts as they will be away from home much of the time and will want to make their own puchases.
How can I set them up so that they are independent from my account, but not lose the content that I have downloaded for them over the years?  (A lot of content).

You and your husband can share a store account and still have seperate iCloud accounts for your contacts, bookmarks and stuff like that.  Click here for instructions to make an apple account without entering a credit card.  Make sure you use a different email address for each apple account.
Set up your iPhone/iPad whatever using the new account for iCloud.  Then go into settings/store and sign in with your purchasing account, you may need to sign out of the other account.  To the best of my knowledge, your household is allowed to share purchased legally, someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
Once you each have your own devices set to your own accounts you can set them to backup to that account and it will keep all your contacts seperate.

  • I have an old iPod classic that iTunes cannot find, I can't even restore it!?

I have an old iPod Classic that iTunes cannot "find" even though it shows it. I can't even restore it. Works fine except can't synch with iTunes to add new music!?

We (Appple techs) tried disk mode and that didn't work. At times the iPod would even "show" itself in iTunes and iTunes would say it was synching but when you looked at the iPod you could tell it wasn't ( it just said do not disconnect) and after 10 to 40 minutes later iTunes would say can't find iPod. We would then have to force quit iTunes because it was hung up and then just disconnect the iPod. The iPod works fine with headphones or a docking station, just can't add (or subtract) anything to it. It completely mystified all the techs in the store and all "senior" advisors on the phone- and that was about 4.5 hours getting tossed to one "expert" or another! Ah well, indeed stranger than life.

  • I cannot sync my contacts from iMac (Address Book) to iPod Classic since iTunes 11 has loaded.  Any advice please ?

I cannot sync my Address Book contacts from iMac to my existing iPod Classic since iTunes 11 has loaded.  Any bright ideas please ?

I'm having the same issue. I have an iPod Classic 120gb with 2.0.1 and iTunes 11.0.1 on an iMac running Mountain Lion 10.8.2.

  • Ipod Classic with Itunes 12.1 - Warning

    First off,
Known issues - immediately after 12 dropped, pretty much all functionality involving Ipod classics was broken. Mac OS recieved a patch that fixed this, Windows has not, and there has been no addressing this issue thus far.
My stuff: Ipod class 120gb 8 years old, windows 7 64bit gaming rig, windows 7 64bit laptop. Gaming rig has been updated to 12.1, laptop was kept in version 11.
The problems: Most common - Ipod will disconnect seconds after being plugged in, leaving no chance to do any diagnosing whatsoever.
Less common - Ipod will show up and be interactable in Itunes, click Sync and get stuck in a never ending loop, stuck on song 1 of X forever, I left it doing that overnight - a good 16 hours - just in case, click restore and get an error 1439 (or similar number, basically same error) Ipod cannot be restored
Least common -  upon clicking "restore Ipod" the computer will blue screen, complete system crash resulting in a system recovery or total loss of data
The fix(for me anyway) - use itunes 11 - Thankfully I had an old laptop that still had version 11.something installed on it, I was able to transfer my non-itunes store music to it and everything is just peachy
I reiterate - These are known issues, I have found dozens of forum posts on various websites complaining about just how fantastically broken the itunes 12 update has been, and many people have resorted to downgrading back to 11, a not-so-broken version. But here's the kicker - Itunes version 11.0.0.163 has NUMEROUS problems that result in either failed installation or instant crashes whenever you try to launch it, or if you're lucky just crashes whenever you try and access the Itunes store through it. Good luck trying to find someone to help you with installing these old versions if you run into one of these problems.
If you have an Ipod classic and a windows 7 computer DO NOT update to Itunes 12, it will not work, and most support operators will run you through hours of diagnostics just to prove that your ipods hard drive isn't crapping out from age.

Thank you Bka131! I have exactly the same problem (your most common: appears, then disappearing). I already spent DAYS to try, remove iTunes, drivers, re-intall, uninstall any competitor SW that is able to sync music...
Today, I tried with the latest iTunes just issued (12.1.0.71) and still the same issue: my iPod classic appears for 1 sec in iTunes, then disapear...
This is incredible. Do you know if some people ARE able to sync their iPod Classic with iTunes 12.x? Or do Apple wants to kick out all the "old" iPod Classic and force us to buy new iPxx? I can not believe they could not fix such big bug more quickly ...I did not find any official announcement from Apple that this is a known but unsolved bug ... Very strange as this seems to touch many users…
Do you have a safe place where I can download iTunes 11.xxx?

  • Importing playlists to a ipod classic using itunes 12

created a playlist but cannot import to my ipod classic. Any ideas?
    Thanks

If you set up automatic syncing, you can select that playlist as one of the items being synced.  Select iPod in iTunes 12 (click device button), so that you see the iPod's "management" screen.  In the iPod's sidebar, under Settings, click Music.  To the right, check the box for Sync Music, near the top.  NOTE:  If that box was not already checked, you have been using the Manually manage music [and videos] setting.  Checking that box enables automatic syncing instead.  The iPod's current content will be replaced by the content you select on the iPod's Music settings screen.  Any songs on the iPod that are not in your computer's iTunes library will be lost.  If this is a problem, don't do it this way; see below for the manual method.
Below the Sync Music setting, select the option to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  Below that, under Playlists, find and select (checkmark) that playlist you created for the iPod.  You can also select other items on those lists.  When you click Apply, the songs in your selection syncs to the iPod (replacing its current content).  Going forward, to update that playlist on the iPod, just update that playlist in your iTunes library (add/remove songs).  The iPod does not need to be connected.  The next time it is connected (or you click Sync if already connected), iTunes updates the iPod with the same changes.
If you don't want set up automatic syncing, this is how to add a playlist to the iPod using the manual method (the iPod is set to Manually manage music [and videos]).  You don't actually add an existing playlist to the iPod.  You create the playlist on the iPod manually, and add songs to it manually.  In iTunes 12, click the Music button on the horizontal bar (near left side).  Near middle of that bar, click Playlists.  The sidebar appears along left side of window, showing your music library, devices, and playlists.  If your iPod is connected, it appears under Devices.  Click the small triangle to left of iPod's name, to drop down its content list (indented below iPod).  Click Music on content list.  At bottom of sidebar, click the plus sign, and select New Playlist.  A new playlist appears on the iPod (on the content list), which you can name.
If you already have a playlist with songs you want on the iPod in your iTunes library, select it in the sidebar under Playlists.  Select any song on the list, and do a Select All (from the Edit menu or Cmd-A on keyboard).  Drag selection to iPod in sidebar to the playlist, and drop it there.  Change the order of songs, as desired.  The songs will be on the iPod "generally," but you can also play them using the playlist.  Going forward, manually update that playlist on the iPod, as desired.

  • Ipod classic and itunes 11.1.5 Does NOT work

This is really unacceptable. I've had iTunes running seamlessly with all my IPod Classics through a Toshiba laptop and Windows Vista premium home edition for years.
Today I accept the prompt to finally upgrade to ITunes 11.1.5 and guess what. iTunes doesn't even recognise my Ipod classic anymore ( it doesn't even show as connected) and my ipod classic is sayings it's got no songs on it. I had over 20000 songs on it and my ITunes library seems to still be in good order so this is just crazy.
Why an updated version of ITunes isn't tested to at least the basic degree of having it compatible with all the relevant apple products it's supposed to work with is beyond me.
I would expect as an Apple customer that when I accept a software update that when I plug in my device it would work as well as or even better than it did with the version I just upgraded from.
So my question is when is this going to get fixed without me having to churn through pages of online documentation and try various things that may or may not work to solve my issue.
This is ridiculous. Come on Apple - you are better than this surely.
Can someone please help. I have a small fortune in Apple gear that now is useless because of this new incompatibility.

    Try Andrei Cerbu's post here
I had the same problem last night, and this just worked for me.

  • How can I sync my iPod classic with iTunes if I only have an iPad?

How can I sync my iPod classic with iTunes if I only have an iPad?
I recently downloaded music on my iPad via iTunes, but I can't get it to my iPod. Any help?

You cannot. There is no iTunes application on an iPad and iPods cannot sync with an iPad.

  • I can't acces my new iPod nano through iTunes..it seems to have been barred

I just installed my new iPod nano.. I already had an iPod and so I still had all my old music saved in my iTunes library.. I added that music to my new iPod. So it appears in the column alongside the 'Library', 'Store' and 'Playlists' tabs (underneath the 'Devices' tab) but it wont allow me to select any music or play music from my iPod whilst in iTunes.. It seems like its all barred.. I have no idea why.. I can still acces music from my library but I cant through my iPod.
I've downloaded the newest version of iTunes.. what other settings should I change?

If the contents of iPod Nano appeared to be "greyed out", you have the Nano set to autosync. If you wish to manage the iPod content directly, you will have to set you iPod preferences to manually manage. Manually manage will also allow you to play iPod content through iTunes.

  • I downloaded 2 cds onto my ipod nano through itunes.  Recently my itunes account changed and now it doesn't recognize the songs from the cds.  How to transfer from ipod back to itunes?  I don't have the cds anymore.

I downloaded 2 cds onto my ipod nano through itunes.  Recently my itunes account changed for some unknown reason and now it doesn't recognize the songs from the cds.  The songs are still on my ipod.  I am affraid to sync now because the songs may be deleated, and I don't have the cds anymore.  How can I transfer the songs from the cds on my ipod back to itunes so that I don't lose them?

What you have on your computer is your iTunes library, not your "account."  The "account" you have for iTunes is your Apple ID, which you use when purchasing or downloading from the iTunes Store.  If these songs came from music CDs that you imported into iTunes, those songs are not related to your Apple ID.
Recently my itunes account changed for some unknown reason and now it doesn't recognize the songs from the cds
How are they not "recognized"?  Are the songs still listed in your iTunes music library, but grayed out?  They no longer appear in your iTunes library at all?
If you search your computer (not in iTunes) for the song files, using one of the song names, can you find the song files?

  • Transferring songs from a Windows-formatted iPod classic to iTunes on Mac

Hi everybody, I'm curious to see if this is even possible. My husband's Windows laptop died for the second time in three years, so he decided to switch to a Mac after seeing my MacBook last longer than both of his Windows laptops. :o) Anyway, now that the Windows hard drive is dead-and no, he didn't back up his songs to CD-he wants to transfer the songs on his Windows-formatted iPod Classic to iTunes on his Mac. I tried Yamipod, but it said "firmware unsupported" and quit-I suspect the Windows format had something to do with it. He has a lot of songs ripped from CDs and he doesn't want to lose them or have to spend time re-ripping them. Any ideas?
    Thanks for your help!

same thing happened to me. I purchased iPod Access from the internet (for about $15). This program will let you transfer your music and playlists from your iPod to your library
