Cannot send a TEXT message to a NEW contact

I don't know if this is because of the 3.0 upgrade....
I can still send a text to someone who I've already sent texts too, and I can simply click their name, and continue the text conversation.
But if I click the icon to select someone NEW to send to, it allows me to select the contact (or contacts), but I cannot move the cursor to the text area to type!
Am I missing something?
No matter what I do, I cannot get the cursor to move from the contacts line, to the text area to begin typing my text...
Any ideas?

Just did a reset - no same thing....after I select a contact, I touch the gray area under the contact list, and the cursor continues to blink in the contact area.
What the heck am I doing wrong?!???

I don't see the "Start new conversation from:" I spent 1 hour and 40 minutes last night on the phone with Verizon. We completely reset the phone after backing it up to icloud. His conclusion was I need a new SIM card and I will not be able to go take care of that until tonight. I don't know if that will fix it or not but that is what he said...

Why can't people send a text message tou my new iPad phone number? I just got this iPad for my birthday and my wife has secretly told everyone the new number to send text messages to as a surprise when I onpened it... but none came through.

Only individuals with iOS devices can message you and they must message you via the email address(es) associated with your Apple ID.
They cannot message a phone number unless you have an iPhone associated with the account.

I cannot send out text messages

I cannot send out text messages - I can receive them - cannot send them to a contact.
This contact has a multiple contacts ranging from gmail to facebook. I deleted all the contacts and now the contact can receive my text messages.
I noticed a small x in a circle to the right of the contact's name. A red x in a circle would appear and say my text messages not sent. I would resend - nothing changed.
Does anyone know why this happens and how I can fix the contact so I can text without getting these messages.
The contact is not blocking me by the way - it is my spouse LOL

Please try deleting all text messages from this person and resend. Do you have a signature on your outgoing text messages? If so please remove the signature and retry. If these don't work please PM me and we will further troubleshoot this issue.

hi! can anyone help me? i cannot send any text messages on my 5700. even checking on my balance, i can't even sent it. I tried to do the factory settings but that doesn't work too. there's an error saying that:
general: memory full. close some applications and try again.
I erased all my messages in my inbox and in sent messages. I even deleted some applications to my phone. And my phone memory and memory card are not also full.
please... i really need help...

I cannot send a text to a friend with an older iPhone. I tried turning iMessage off but it keeps prompting me to log in instead of sending the text via SMS with my cellular plan. Any suggestions?

So you did not read about iMessage before you bought the iPad? If you did, you would know that you can only text other iOS 5 users.

OK, I had a user at work wit a very similar problem in that they had just upgraded their iPhone (3GS) to IOS 5 and was unable to send texts
after some testing it appeared to be that certain contacts accosiated with a particular addressbook were not working, so I am assuming that perhaps the people who are unable to send any texts perhaps have all their contacts on one addressbook or that both addressbooks are having the same problem
a quick test to see if it is an addressbook error would be to create a new contact (I used the same name as the contact that didn't work) and then send a test message
One strange / new thing that I found was that once I had entered the number in a new contact of teh same name the data/accounts were merged and the text message (sms) WORKED!
I repeated these steps for a few contacts just to be sure and it worked every time
again, this may not be the same as the problem your having but at the moment it seens like it's worth a shot if you dont want to resort to a new setup or loose 1000+ messages

HT3529 I cannot send a text message to one specific friend when they have iMessage turned off. It should go through as a text message instead of an iMessage but they never receive it. It only happens with this one person and I can receive, but not send.

Please help! I can't send a text message to one specific friend of mine when he has iMessage turned off. I can receive his texts, but he never receives mine. Both are iPhones, obviously, different carriers which shouldn't matter. Neither of us got new phones. MMS is on. All if a sudden it just happened. No major changes other than him turning iMessage off, due to a nosy brother who shares his iPad. What am I missing??

Cannot send group texts/messages or voice texts.

I just bought my iPhone 6 Plus on December 27. Starting today for some reason, I cannot send group texts (iMessages or SMS texts) or voice texts. Please advise.

This doesn't really help me as much; I know how to send texts, and I am able to do so to individuals. It's just that I can't get group texts to go through. I have service and am sending to both iPhone users and non-iPhone users. Interestingly enough, a moment ago a particularly long text I tried to send to an individual non-iPhone user was not delivered. In my wife's iPad she cannot send a text message to an Android user, but I can on mine. Both use the same 8.1 iOS. When she types in the addressee name it comes up in red and will not allow "send."

There are a lot of posts in the forums today with people having problems with iMessage. There was also a published outage yesterday, so it's possible there are still some issues that may be impacting you both.
I would just wait it out - I'm sure it will be sorted out soon.

If it was not sent, it is possible that you prevented it from being sent. However, if it made it to the Apple server before it tried sending as a SMS, it is very possible it still could be sent. In my opinion, I would say no.
