"Cannot send message..." dialog stopped describing error in 10.4

Previous to 10.4, Mail had basically the same "Cannot send message..." dialog box. You know, the one that lets you choose a different server, "Try Again Later" or "Edit Message". Anyway, back in Panther days, it would give you the actual error message, like these for example:
554 Service unavailable; Client host blocked using sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org
550 Invalid recipient: Recipient address rejected
I suspect it was removed due to how un-consumer-friendly those message can be, but does anyone know of a secret preference or a plist edit I can do to get these back? They are indispensable when troubleshooting.
PowerBook G4 12" 867 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1 GB, 60 GB, AirPort Extreme, Bluetooth

Keep me in the loop to, I also like to know these techincal messages that may be helpful to my IT dept in the office; Because of this elimination in v10.4.3, for one period of time my Mail cannot send out external email outside of my office... and we went from "A to Z" trying to figure out what happen, in the end it was a simple change of MAC ID, because the IT dept finally realised I have actually changed my G4 to a G5 (machine upgrade), had those messages be available, it may cut down their time

  • Cannot send message dialog box is too big to get to the bottom to close

I tried sending an email to my entire address book. I received the error message "cannot send message". That is not my issue, I can deal with it. What IS my issue is the dialog box contains all the addresses that I tried to send the email to and therefore the dialog box itself is really big. I cannot scroll to the bottom to click on the resend, or edit email choices. I cannot close this particular email. I forced quit email altogether, but when I re-opened the dialog and message came back up. I shut all the way down and it still came up. Does anyone know how to get rid of this unsent email?

I just went to the Genius Bar with this exact problem. To fix this do the following:
    1. click on the error message (it will select it without showing anything)
    2. press the return key (this should clear it from the screen and it will try to resend)
3a. turn off your internet connection (wither airport or ethernet)
3b. go to mail preferences and turn "disable" that particular mail account
(these 2 steps in #3 will stop mail from its automation and allow you to select the message itself)
    4. Your "outbox should now be present, and you can go into it and select the message
    5. now click on the message tab at the top of your screen and select "send to..." > select "drafts"
Now you should be able to edit this message or the recipients or just delete it all together and start over. I hope this helps some people out, it was a massive headache for me!

  • Cannot send message due to abuse; Error 554

I have been trying to send out emails for 2 days to my church family about a sick member, and I keep getting this message: An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'Urgent Prayer Request!', Account: 'Carolyn Sockwell', Server: 'smtp.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '554 Transaction failed : Cannot send message due to possible abuse; please visit http://postmaster.yahoo.com/abuse_smtp.html for more information', Port: 465, Secure(SSL): Yes, Server Error: 554, Error Number: 0x800CCC6F This is really irritating and has never happened to me in the past. I notified YAHOO and have not heard back. I have been with Bellsouth for years--is it time to get a new provider? How can I get this to stop happening? I send out a devotional to all of my church members each day, too.

same problem.  some spam went out from (ostensibly) my account to a few people - I reported it and now I can't send email.  BUT there's NO WAY to give yahoo the headers of the spam so they can trace it.  They really don't care. And it's not clear if att.com has anything to do with yahoo, so I spent lots of time filling out att.com contact forms only to be told they have nothing to do with this - so why are all the 'conatact us' links to att.  How do I get yahoo??????I need to send this spam so they can find out where it's coming and i need to send email!!!

  • Cannot send messages this is my error message.

    Sending of message failed.
The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server p3plcpnl0656.prod.phx3.secureserver.net failed. The server may be unavailable or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server settings are correct and try again, or contact the server administrator.

    Well, at least one problem would be the fact that you do not seem to have the correct settings entered;
if telus is your ISP, your outgoing mail server from telus should have something like smtp.telus.xxx, not pppoe.ca.
I just checked the telus website and here are the settings for email:

For the past week I have not been able to send both simple and attached messages through my icloud e-mail.

This is a terrible customer experience for Apple users. I have been dealing with this same issue since April 2012; all used to work just fine and then suddenly -- "Cannot send message" error appears.
When is Apple going to fix this? I have two iPads and an iPhone but often need to access files from my PC (next time, it'll be a Mac),
    Very frustrating.

  • Error code when sending: Cannot send message due t...

    Hi,
I'm suddenly unable to send emails via Thunderbird.  I've not had any problems before; not been doing anything unusual, like sending 200+ emails on the same day; have scanned my PC for trouble (none detected); visited the web address in the message and could see that other ppl have sometimes had the same problem, but no one seems to hear back from yahoo when they try to get resoloution, so I thought I would try here.  Can anyone help? The exact message is: An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded:  Transaction failed : Cannot send message due to possible abuse; please visit http://postmaster.yahoo.com/abuse_smtp.html for more information. Please check the message and try again.

I use Thunderbird and I have just tried sending a test e-mail, no problem at all. Are you using the right server.

  • "Cannot send message using the server....."

    Hi all,
Considering the nature of the problem I am about to relate I would have to say at the outset that I would be very very surprised if other people have not come across this problem, so here goes...
We have around 60 users of Apple Mail from both 10.4 and 10.5, so varying degrees of versions of Apple Mail however most if not all are updated to 10.4.11 and 10.5.2.
We have been plagued with people being frustrated about emails bouncing back with an immediate error which is basically the following...
"Cannot send message using the server smtp.xxx.com:user
Sending the message content to the server failed.
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below etc etc"
I am sure a lot of you have seen this error.
However, it is totally random but I am at the end of my tether with it. It generally revolves around emails with attachments and can be totally random. I was trying to send a screenshot today, very small screenshot, using the Apple-Shift-4 technique, sent the .png file, then saved it out as a .jpg, nothing. Tiny file, around 5k. Got the error above, took it out, sent no problem. Other similar files on the desktop refused to send but a .pdf did. I then thought it might be our server, so sent teh same attachments using my .mac account. Same result and failed to send. Reports from other users in our group show that they too get random results, maybe moving the attachment in the email makes it go, sometimes putting it before your signature, sometimes putting your signature copied and pasted in so many times makes it work, all sorts of methods but all resulting in the same conclusion, Apple Mail can be very unreliable.
We have even migrated some users to Entourage and the problem disappears. Even to Thunderbird, but those users miss the search capability as it is quicker and more reliable. So they want to go back.
Considering I have been struggling with this issue back in the day when we were on the Apple Mail related version in 10.4 I was hoping that the version released in 10.5 would remedy the problems. Sometimes I feel it has just got worse.
Is anyone else experiencing this sort of difficulty in Apple Mail, I really feel isolated and at a loss with how to remedy this for so many users.
If anyone can share their experiences and how they have got around similar issues in Mail I am all ears and open to any suggestions.
Thanks everyone for taking the time to read through this. There is more but the experiences are so random it is not worth trying to put it all down.
    Thanks again.

I went in to Connection Doctor and. oddly enough, for this Mac account it said I was on Port 25. Si I changed it to Port 587 and saved the changes.
Still, I have the same problem with the same error messages.
I go back to the mail preferences > Accounts > Advanced and it shows Port 143 still there grayed out.
What about SSL - it's not checked.
Odd that this problem only seems to be from one .mac account emailing to another .mac account. Could the server be down?

  • Cannot send message using the server (null)

    i use mail 2.1.
i have a .mac account and have three other email accounts attached to my mail account.
lately, i cannot send any email.
the switchiing ports fix hasn't helped either.
    this is the error message:
CANNOT SEND MESSAGE USING THE SERVER (null)
The server response was: 5.1.0 <email [email protected]>...
From address does not match authentication.
Use the pop-up menu below to try a different outgoing mail server. All messages will use this server until you quit Mail or change your network settings.
    Message from: email <[email protected]>
Send message using: [there is a combo box here with all the four accounts servers listed]
no matter which one i pick it doesn't work and no email is sent.
anyone have this error before? or now how to fix it?
    i'd be appreciative.
    thanks
1.67 GHz Power PC PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Sony HDR HC3 HD HandyCam MiniDV

I was having a similar problem (don't feel like typing all the details)
I was about to to delete my com.apple.mail.plist, when finally it hit me.
I ran ethereal (again, I'm sorry, but learning how to use ethereal is a topic unto itself). Following the TCP stream (ie. looking at the smtp messages being sent back and forth) I came across two problems. For some reason my port number was set to 567 or something like that, when it's supposed to be 25, as I had originally set it to.
Once I corrected the port number I started receiving an error message from the smtp server. It said the return email address could not be authenticated. (using xyz.com as an example) The correct return email address was supposed to be [email protected], but for some reason it was changed to john@xyz in the account settings.
Anyway, to get to the point, another thing to check is that your return address has been set correctly, and if all else fails, make sure you have X11 installed and use fink to install and run ethereal. This will let you know if you are actually connecting to the server, and will show you any error messages.
PS. I think this problem started occurring with the last update made to mail. I believe it somehow corrupted my settings. This would explain how my port number could have been changed to the default port number of .mac mail.

  • Cannot Send Messages Using  the Server

I am dependent (during the day) on a wireless connection to the Minneapolis Wi-Fi system (U.S. Wireless).
I've got an e-mail account with comcast and I have successfully interfaced this with the Apple Mail application that came with OS X 10.5.4 and for many weeks have been happily sending and receiving e-mails. But....
I've been on the road and had to connect with Hotel internet services and I was picking up free WiFi in NYC when I was there.
I first noticed the problem when I was staying at a hotel in Vermont.
I would try to send e-mails and I would get the message:
CANNOT SEND MESSGE USING THE SERVER __________.
Select a different outgoing mail server....
Now, I am back home and using my U.S. Wireless connection (which has been really bad lately).
I keep getting these blasted messages and my mail sometimes goes through but more than often, I get these "cannot send message.." notices and my e-mail just sits there going nowhere in the outbox.
How can I solve this problem?

Beside the SMTP name -- smtp.comcast.net -- there is a pair of arrows, with one pointing up and one pointing down. If you click on those arrows you will be presented with a list of all SMTP ever enter (you may only have one), and also the command to Edit Server List. If you choose Edit Server List, you will be presented with a completely new setup window, dealing only with SMTP servers, and that window will have two tabs, one of which is also Advanced.
From the name, smtp.comcast.net, without your Username appended, would indicate that an Authentication of None is currently in effect. With changes that Comcast has made recently, whether you use Port 25 or Port 587, I believe you would have to use Password Authentication, most certainly if the latter Port 587 is chosen.
If you click on the link below, although not for Comcast, you will nevertheless see in section 12 through 15, screenshots that cover the SMTP setup that I am describing above.

  • " ! Cannot send message - Message has no valid recipient "

    Android version 4.4.4
    Sony Xperia Z3 Compact
When I use the pre-installed Messaging app I get the following error message for some but not all contacts
    " [!] Cannot send message
Message has no valid recipient "
I can't work out what is is about the contacts that results in the error but today I had the error when trying to text to an iPhone and a Blackberry. Just to be clear, some contacts produce that error message every time; some contacts work properly every time.
It's becoming more than a little frustrating and at the moment I'm wondering why did I not just get another iPhone?
    Anyway, all suggestions gratefully received...

    It gets a bit weirder.
Taking the contact I tried to text earlier:
If I go to the contacts app, and select the messaging icon next to his mobile number, the text message which I compose is sent properly.
If I open the messaging app, select write new message and select his name, the text is not sent and the error message appears.
    It's not at all satisfactory.

  • Error when sending message: 500 Internal Server Error

    Hi
IE is not accepting any messages,
when I try to send the messgae to the IE ( using RWB) i am getting the below error " Error when sending message: 500 Internal Server Error".
following things what i have noticed.
    1. Pipleline URL is fine, both in the BS of XI and in the RFC destnation which i am maintaing on the  IE admin) URL is  "http://<host>:8000/sap/xi/engine?type=entry"
    2. SICF all the XI serivess are up and running, i am able to test these service.
    3. The http port is active ( SMICM )
Pls note the error is  500 Internal Server Error
    regards
    Nisar

I think in a simple term 500 can be said as "the request cannot be processed curretnly", these options mentieoned by you are not applicable in my case.
This generally occurs due to load problem or if you are on an SP less than 12 or even if there is an administration problem---I am on PI7.0 , what are the administration problem you are talking about?
1 Check Table Space is enough. ---i had installed server recently & very few interface running.
2 Server licence Date or Time. In this case change system date and restart server.---i have recently installed server.
3 Check the service pack levels on your XI. If it is obsolete upgrade it with latest versio----Can u explain more on this?
Try restart the java stack(XI Server) and follwing services.
com.sapii.af.app ---I am not passing trough Adater framework, so i dont think this service will matters....
com.sapii.cpa.af.app.---CPA cahe is done sucessfully, as i said i am not passsing through adapter framework.
basically for a simple HTTP post what might cause 500 error if all necessary services are up and running?
    regards
    Nisar

  • Cannot send messages with attachments

I recently got a new 13" MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard. I setup Mail to work with our OWA Exchange Server and it works fine except for one major bug. I cannot send ANY messages that have attachments. Here's what I've tried so far to resolve the issue:
Tried a smaller attachment - no change
Tried a larger attachment - no change
Tried composing a new message - no change
Tried replying to a message - no change
Tried forwarding a message - no change
Tried different types of attachments (Word docs, pdfs, jpgs, etc) - no change
Updated to the OS to 10.6.1 - no change
    What else can I try?

Right, forgot that part. It goes away for one second (as if the message has been sent), then comes back with this error:
Cannot send message using the server +(my smtp server settings)+. The Exchange 2007 connection to server +(our exchange server's ip address)+ failed. Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent.
Below that, I get a list of SMTP servers, but since I only use one account with Mail, its just the Exchange entry. There are three button across the bottom: Edit Message, Try Layer, and Try With Selected Server.
If I select my Exchange server and click Try With Selected Server, it comes right back with this same error.
If I click Try Later, it puts in the Outbox, but never sends it. I left a message in there for a day once and it eventually gave me this error again for that message.
If I click Edit Message, and remove the attachment, I'm able to send the message.
My guess is that Mail isn't encoding the attachments correctly, which means I'll have to wait for Apple to fix the bug.

  • Cannot send message

Every time I try to send an email from my icloud account, from the icloud website, I get the error message "Cannot send message. This message cannot be sent at this time."
Is "this time" suppose to mean "this year"?
Are the iCloud servers really down that much? Or is there something I can do to fix this?

does you email address have uppercase characters in it?
if so, try creating an alias in lowercase and see if email sends okay from that

  • Keep getting 'Cannot send message using server...' message - Why!??

    Hi there,
Every time I launch Mail, the first time I try to send a message I get the same window, warning me that Mail 'Cannot send message using the server...'.
It's annoying, because this is the only server I have, and it does work. I just have to hit the 'Use Selected Server' button, and it works.
But next time I launch Mail, I have to go through the same tired routine.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might do to solve this problem?
    thanks so much,
    Malcolm

    Hi Malcolm.
It isn’t clear whether you’ve always had this problem in Mail, or it started to happen as a result of some changes you made, or what...
Is this outgoing server associated with a mail account provided by your ISP or something else?
Doesn’t the error message give any additional information as to what could be the cause of the problem? What does Window > Connection Doctor say?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Try also turning OFF all the network port configurations except the one needed to connect to Internet and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
Also, try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible, i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc.
Mail keeps information about outgoing (SMTP) servers in a separate list independently of the mail accounts themselves. The account settings just associate one of the available outgoing servers with each account. Orphaned or dangling outgoing server entries (i.e. not associated with any account) sometimes cause weird sending problems.
Go to Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), choose Edit Server List from the popup menu, and delete any servers that shouldn’t be there. The Edit Server List panel shows the account each outgoing server is associated with.
