Cannot set preferred application to open .eml files

I usually use SeaMonkey 2.0.5Pre (Mozilla) as my browser and mail client. I have a number of e-mails that were saved as .eml files, using SeaMonkey. Recently I had some general system problems. In the process of rectifying these, I rebuilt my hard disk directory, using Disk Warrior, and the LaunchServices database, using Onyx.
Ever since then, some of my saved .eml e-mails open in MS Entourage (which I possess but have never used) when double-clicked; and "Finder/File/Info/Open with/Change all" does nothing to discourage this behaviour. How can I persuade all .eml files to open in SeaMonkey?

There's also RCDefaultApp, which can access all those settings...

  • Cannot switch preferred application to open pages document

    When I double click a .pages document the application Preview opens and tries to open the document. If I do a Command+I or Get Info I see that the Preview application is selected to open the document. If I then click the dropdown menu to see what apps will open it I see Pages (default). Preview is not even listed. If I select Pages and click the Change All… button it switches back to Preview. It seems there is a preference file that is not functioning properly or something within the OS. How do I fix this?

    Have you done any maintenance of the computer lately? You can use the Disc Utility or the free Onyx from _http://www.titanium.free.fr/_
    Delete the file Jerrold mentioned and restart the computer. Don't start Pages or Preview before you have restarted the computer again.

  • Setting default application to open .doc files

    Hello,
    I'm having a problem with the Info box. I can't seem to set all my .doc files to open with Word 2004. I have repeatedly opened an Info box on several different .doc files, and set them to Open With: Word 2004, and then had it Change All... But it never sticks, it always defaults back to Word 2008. I have both Word 2004 and Word 2008 installed. Maybe they don't play nice with each other. Or maybe they are messing with OS X 10.4. Any thoughts?
    thanks.

    Oh. Great discovery & thanks for the feedback.
    UPDATE: I changed one .doc file to open with Word '04, and bingo it did! I tried it again with another file, it worked too. So it works if I use the Info box and change only one file at a time, but not when I Change All. hmmmm....
    Oh I deduce...
    When you change an individual file, X is inserting a pointer to the application to start. When you do a change all, X is changing the default application to start. X is not hardcoding the default to given application, but setting the default to an application id. In turn, the application id then maps to an application. When you install a later version of the application the application id gets mapped to the new application.
    Interestingly, I rarely use the global change. I change only one program at a time. I was confused because I had not worked with multiple version of the same program. I use multiple programs to edit and view HTML.

  • Firefox wont open EML files for me any more.

    I have saved some files on a flash-drive that I have opened in the past that will no longer open. They have the Firefox logo next to them but they wont open. They say they are EML files but now I can't open them.

    Opening a .eml file depends on the email software that you use. For instance, Internet Explorer can now open .eml files since they are basically formatted in the same manner as .mht files are. Simply change the filename extension from .eml to .mht, and the file can now be opened on Internet Explorer. If you have Outlook, simply click the file and it should open easily in the program. If Outlook is not your default application that opens .eml files, simply right-click on the file, choose Open With and then select Outlook Express. Using Windows Mail, simply drag and drop the .eml file into one of your folders and click on it to open it.or u can use a FIREFOX EML file viewer software .

  • Cannot launch application to open a file from jdev extension

    Hello:
    I use the following code to let my application to open a file:
    String[] cmd = new String[3];
    cmd[0] = "cmd.exe" ;
    cmd[1] = "/C" ;
    cmd[2] = "myfile.pdf;
    Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd);
    p.waitFor();
    It worked fine if it was in a main method running in jdev. However, my application is a jdev client launched by clicking run/debug extension on project icon. When that part of code was executed, I didn't see the file got opened. No cmd.exe process got created either. I am wondering if I need to do something more to make it work. (I did enable "allow program input" in Tool Settings in Run/Debug/Profile of the project property).
    Anyone who knows this may offer some help/hint?
    Thanks.

    Hi there
    Perhaps this trick will help.
    Do the file browse thing where it appears to lock up.
    Press Alt+Spacebar and release both keys.
    Presss M. (selects the Move command)
    Press any arrow key.
    Wiggle the mouse around a little and see if the window pops into view.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Mail 6.2 won't open .eml files

    Hi
    I'm running Mail.app ver 6.2 in OSX 10.8.2 with all the latest upgrades (23 Nov 2012). I'm having an issue opening .eml files/attachments in my mail.app (in OSX, not iOS).
    It's my understanding that mail.app has full support for .eml files and I used to open them with no problems before the upgrade to Mountain Lion. When I click to open the files, it displays the envelope animation like if it's going to open it but the window never appears. The only option is to use preview, and that works perfectly, buf if the .eml file has attachments "inside" of it, I can't open them using preview.
    There is no error log.
    What might be the problem?
    I've done permitions repair a couple of times.
    The only addons I have installed on mail.app 6.2 are attachment tammer and mailhub.

    This discussion suggests a solution.

  • Opening .eml files

    Could anyone tell me how I might be able to open .eml files in Mail? Also, how can I open them in my webmail account?

    When I download an .eml file to my Downloads folder, double clicking it causes Mail to open it. As for your webmail account, do a Save Attachment (if your webmail app offers that) and then save it to disk. Double click to open it.

  • Firefox won't open .eml files

    whenever I receive an .eml email, firefox just shows a bunch of letters and numbers which make no sense whatever

    You need to open .eml files with your email program (e.g. Thunderbird). Firefox can't open such files.

  • Can't open .EML files with Mail?

    A relative has an old G4 tower and he's running Tiger. He's got an old version of Mail. He used to be able to open .EML files with it, but his friend came over and fixed up his printer/scanner and now he can't open them. I can open them just fine cause I'm running 10.6.6... it's just weird how it suddenly stopped for him when his friend fixed the scanner... anyone know how he can open .EML files again?
    Thanks!!!

    how this is going to help to isolate the issue?
    Even if it is going to work with another user account, I still have to keep this user active as the primary account.
    If it works in another account, then the problem is likely just a preference file or something else account specific. Those problems can be easily fixed. If it happens in the new account, then it is a system problem.
    The first step to solving a problem is figuring out where it is.

  • [SOLVED] Unable to set default application to open files

    Hello,
    Whenever I try to set a default application for a file type (an avi for example) by right-clicking the file in Nautilus and choosing Open with Other Application, I can select the application (in this case VLC), check the Remember this Application checkbox  and click Open, I always get the below message:
    Could not set application as the default: Can't create user application configuration folder /root/.local/share/applications: Permission denied
    I'm not logged in as root (confirmed with "whoami") so I'm not sure why it's trying to access the root home folder.
    I'm thinking this is simply a misconfigured path statement (forgive the Windows terminology) but I'm not sure where to start looking.  Any help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply ngoonee!
    The situation has already changed a bit.  Still being in Windows mode, I decided to try a reboot.  After rebooting I no longer get the error I was before (I wonder if it had something to do with logging in initially as root then su'ing to my user account) but the association with vlc just isn't sticking.
    I noticed though that now when I right-click on a video file I get the option to "Open with Movie Player" as well as "Open with VLC media player" (which does do what it's supposed to), which wasn't there before.  For grins I went and set the preferred multimedia app to VLC through System > Preferences > Preferred Applications, but that didn't help.
    Is there a place these preferences are stored that I might take a peek at?

  • Preferred/Standard for opening a file from hypertext link?

    I wondered if there was a most preferred way to open another fm doc from a hyptertext doc from a useability/customer preference point of view.
    Openlink?
    Opennew?
    Openlinkfitwin?
    Which is best?
    -Laurie

    Laurie,
    The main difference between any of the "goto..." vs "open..." hypertext options is that the goto's open the doc in the current window, whereas the open's create new independent windows for FM hypertext docs. When going to PDFs, then there is no difference in behaviour. Another difference is that the "open" requires a filename, whereas a "goto" doesn't.
    If you want the links to open in separate windows in PDFs, then you need to be aware that this is under user control and cannot be specified in the PDF document. The user needs to have their Preferences > General > Documents setting for "Open cross-document links in same window" enabled.
    Any of the "fitwin" commands are ignored when creating PDFs.
    The "message openfile" launches a file in it's associated application.
    The "message URL" (Go to URL hypertex command) links to a URL/email client/newsgroup/etc.
    If you need to create named destinations for targets from PDFs or html files to link to, then be aware the using the Newlink command results in FM prepending "M8.newlink." before your named destination. When the file is used in a book, then FM modifies this prefix to be of the form "M[n].8." where the n=1,2,3... depending upon the file's position in the book. These prefixes are meant to create unique targets if the same valid newlink is used in diffrent files when combined into one PDF. To get around this you either prepend your source jumps to the targets with the appropriate prefix or use anchored postscript text frames to create "/DEST pdfmark [linkname]"  entries or Shlomo Perets' TimeSavers tool to clean-up the destination markers after FM has tweaked them.

  • How can I make Firefox open .eml file with Thunderbird (Windows XP)

    I have a webpage that has links to saved .eml files (Thunderbird saves email messages as .eml files). When I click on the link Firefox treats it like a .txt file (displays source). I want Firefox to use Thunderbird as helper application but I have not been able to find a way to do that. Even setting browser.helperApps.alwaysAsk.force to true doesn't bring up the open dialog box. Nor can I manually add eml to applications list. Help needed!

    That happens if the server sends the .eml file as text/plain and not as a generic type like application/octet-stream that would force Firefox to download the file.<br />
    In such a case there is not much to do about it then to contact the site and ask them to change the content type for .EML files.
