Cannot share airport connection to ethernet

Hello everybody,
I am getting a wifi signal on my BlackBook [OSX10.5.8], I am browsing and sending emails. My partners little 12" PowerBook [OSX10.4.11] can't connect to the signal due to distance and inferior antenna.
1] So I am sharing the incoming wifi signal on my BlackBook over the Ethernet and I don't use the firewall.
2] I connect both computers via a patch cable.
3] Now when I set the PowerBook to automatic location it should work. At least that has been the case at previous ocasions, but now it only shows 3 green dots instead of 5?
4] So I thought going about it the manual way. Looking up the IP address on the BlackBook of the outgoing Ehternet port.
in Terminal [type: dig] I am finding the Router address:
5] On the PowerBook in the Network pane at the Build-in Ethernet tab I set it to manual and fill in the numbers. I understood that for the IP address I had to add one number, I did. I am guessing the DNS Servers to be the same as the Router address:
6] All but the Network Settings are green.
Still not being able to connect the PowerBook to the internet. What am I missing, and why is it so difficult?
Adventurous greetings,
Coen

Hello Bob,
Thank you for taking time to look into this, I really appreciate it.
So let me start afresh:
- MacBook [10.5.8] recieving wifi from 192.168.2.8 and has got everything working. Firewall turned off.
- Sharing is turned on on the MacBook
-  And is giving out the folowing IP:
- I checked in the Activity Monitor and 'bootpd' and 'named' are both running:
Now I go over to the PowerBook [10.4.11] which I can interact with, I see the Desktop on my MacBook.
- I have locations on automatic and I see that it is getting a 192.168.2.45 address:
- this is the Network window showing Ethernets TCP/IP settings:
But still no connection?
Now before I go futrther, I would like to have some feedback. Am I doing something wrong here? This is as I have done it numerous times before and it worked. The only thing I can think of is that in Brazil we were getting wifi from some giant media station and the guys entered some proxies in the Network pane, in my automatic location. But I have cleared all that. Is there a way to make sure everything is clean, like a reset sort of thing? Or is that overkill?
What is my next step into getting closer to a solution?
Adventurous greetings,
Coen

  • Share Airport Connection to Ethernet port in BRIDGE mode?

I've been trying to do this for a while now, but I haven't been able.
I have the modem form my ISP hooked to a Airport Express configured in BRIDGE mode, thus creating a wireless network for my home with "live" IPs for all the computers (yes... I know the security risks...).
My G4 (across the room) gets Internet from it's Airport Card and I configured the Share Internet preference pane to "Share the Internet Connection from the Airport to the Ethernet Port", so I can create (...extend, really) a WIRED network from my G4's Ethernet Port.
The thing is that I want this wired network to have also "live" IPs, but the Airport Card always has the "Distribute IP Addresses" (or it's equivalent, from the Airport Admin Setup) activated, so it provides a 192.168.X.X network and I can't find a way to turn that off.
In other words, I want it to acts as a BRIDGE and not as DHCP Server.
    Anyone?
    TIA

I was trying to use IPNetShareX to configure it, but I didn't find a way. I'll keep looking...

  • Can AirPort Extreme join a wireless network and share the connection to ethernet connected devices?

Can AirPort Extreme join a wireless network and share the connection to ethernet connected devices?

Yes, if the AirPort Extreme is joining a wireless network that has been created by another Apple router. In this case, it will be extending the wireless network and the Ethernet ports are enabled on the "remote" AirPort Extreme.
No, if the AirPort Extreme will be used with another router from another manfacturer.
Ironically, the less expensive AirPort Express can do what you ask about with virtually any wireless network using a special feature called ProxySTA. It won't extend the wireless with a non-Apple router, but the Ethernet port will be enabled.

  • Share airport connection via airport

Can I share my airport connection via airport?
I can barely get aiport signal in my hotel room with my macbook, but my iphone cannot find any networks. Can I use my macbook pro as a bridge?
If I cannot do it with leopard sharing, is there a third party application that can allow it?
    Thanks a lot!

Yep, looks like you cannot share from Airport to Airport.
See if the hotel can provide a wired Ethernet connection for you or change your room to one with better reception.

  • Sharing Airport connection with Ethernet - Self Assigned IP

WHy is the ethernet port getting a self assigned IP Address. I want to share the wifi connection with the ethernet to run a cable to my ps3. Need to update trophies so i can wipe it. Wifi doesnt work on PS3 at this time(reason for wiping)

This is a major debacle with Apple. I contacted support and they informed me that they don't support this function.
After many hours of playing around and reading forums this is quite easy (once you know what to do)!
Setup internet sharing (airpor to ethernet)
Go to Network under system preferences
View the Ethernet icon (should be yellow as it self assigns the IP)
Click on TCP/IP and in the Configure IPv4 menu, select "Using DHCP with manual address"
Set the Ethernets IP address to 192.168.2.1
Set the Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0 (255.255.0.0 is default on OSX 10.6)
On the NIC tring to use the shared connection (PS3/XBOX/Network DVD/PC), you should just be able to "Obtain IP and DNS Automatically". If not, enter the following:
    IP Address(connecting device): 192.168.2.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1
This has nothing to do with the IP of the airport connection or your router, this is the internal Ethernet port settings on the hardware (as far as I can tell).
My internal Airport IP is 10.0.1.4, with 10.0.1.1 for airport extreme, and the self assigned IP was 169.254.151.92 on my shared Ethernet port on the Mac when it wasn't configured properly.
Let me know if this works!!!

  • Share Airport connection between 2 iBooks?

Hi there, I'm setting up a little roving trolley of G3 iBooks at school and they all have airport cards except for one. They are runnin OS 9.1 or 9.2
The ones with airport all see the internet/school network/postscript network printer just fine...
Would it be possible to connect the one without Airport to one of the others via an ethernet cable and connect to the internet/printer that way... sharing the Airport connection?
I'm more familiar with OSX so would appreciate any help!
    cheers
    Steve

As I recall internet sharing is not a feature in OS 9, but there was software that implemented it on those older systems. I used this software quite some time ago - IPNetRouter by Sustainable Software.

  • New MBP and old PBG4 don't share Airport connection well.

    Hi -
My 2 laptops are both on a wireless network via a Snow ABS.
They don't seem to be able to share the signal.
If one computer is downloading a file, the other one won't be able to connect to the internet.
Without knowing exactly what I'm talking about... I'm guessing this is a bandwidth problem?
Shouldn't they be able to share the connection, albeit at a slower transfer rate, rather than just one at a time?
Also, the MBP connection does seem to be a bit sluggish as compared to the PB, although the range is much improved on the MBP.
Any insights, suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dennis

It disables the DHCP server on the AEBS and therefore the AEBS does not create a subnet nor distribute IP addresses. The devices that connect to the AEBS request an IP address from the network that the AEBS is connected to. If the AEBS is connected directly to a DSL/cable modem, your ISP provides one IP address so therefore there is only one AEBS client allowed.

  • PC AirPort Utility cannot find Airport extreme w/ ethernet but has internet

Hello, I have set up the airport extreme to use with a MacBook. I pluged everything in just fine (PC using ethernet) but had to configure the base station with the MacBook as the PC could not find it using the Utility. However the PC is connected to the internet just fine through the base station's ethernet port.
My problem is trying to get the PC (running XP home 2002 sp2) to see the Airport Extreme using the Airport Utility in order to start configuring network printing and eventually AirTunes.
I cannot seem to find this solution anywhere. Please help if you can. Thanks!

Hi I don't know for sure if this is your answer, but with your mac go into setup again. Under wireless tab, then wireless options , make sure 'create a closed network' is unchecked. This may allow the pc to see any Apple base stations. Good luck
Can you please tell me exactly where to find the "create a closed network" box? I am brand new to mac and am still finding my way around. Thank you so much!

  • Cannot configure Airport Express via ethernet cable

I am trying to configure my new Airport Express, in order to stream music to it.
I have a wireless switch/router (Linksys), but DHCP is disabled.
My mac has no wireless card, it is connected via cable, on 100Mbps port.
A friend advised me to connect the AE directly via Ethernet cable, in order to first configure it.
I connected the AE to the router, and the Mac (in the Airport Setup wizard) tells me that "No airport card is installed" (correct). I then click on "Continue", and I can choose between "Configure a new Airport station" and "Modify...".
If I select "Configure...". I get the following message (I am translating from french): The Wizard detected a new Airport Express called "Base Station 5f6281". Good!
But If I click "Continue", it will report "An orror occured when contacting the selected Airport station".
    What should I do?
If, instead of selecting "Configure..", I try to "Modify an existing configuration", I have the same when I then click on "identify". What is the trick?
    Thanks for your help
    Robin

Follow the instructions posted here by David Lovell (which work equally well for Macs and PCs):
David Lovell, "Airtunes for XP with a Wired/Wireless network" #1, 09:05pm Jan 8, 2005 CDT
    Notes:
    1. You MUST re-enable DHCP on your router. If you don't, the Airport Express won't be able to get an IP address. If your Airport Express doesn't get an IP address, your Mac won't be able to communicate with it.
    2. When configuring via an ethernet connection, you must use the Airport Admin Utility (David's article tells you this as well). The Airport Setup Assistant can only be used if you are going to do the configuration wirelessly from an Airport card equipped Mac.

  • Cannot share wireless network through ethernet port??

I have not been able to get it to work.. 1.5 g4 powerbook ..My ethernet port does not seem to be sending out IPs.. I was able to do this with my dads 867.. i dont understand why its not working?? I go in the contol panels and click on sharing and go through the steps.. still nothing.. is anyone else having problems getting this to work??? i know its a rare config..

I have a problem similar to yours
I have tried everything to figure out why the ethernet connection never works on this new used computer. It is able to connect over the airport with the other computer, but that connection is too slow, so I would like to use the ethernet. The computers don't see eachother.
I use the same ethernet cable to connect my other computer (500 MHz PowerPC G4) to the airport base. I use it to connect my ibook to the G4, It always works. But it has never worked once with this iMac.
I have made sure filesharing is on, I tried not using firewall at all, appletalk is on and set for ethernet. I have tried other little things and nothing has helped. The only thing I haven't tried yet is getting a new cable. But it works with everything else, so I don't beleive that will help. Is it possible that this new used iMac doesn't have a working ethernet port? I would ask the previous owner but he died.

  • Sharing Airport Internet connection Over Ethernet

    Hi
I've read various things about this on the forums here, but none of them seem to make a considerable amount of sense seeing as the person just magically works out the problem. So I'll attempt to describe my problem.
I'm trying to share my Intel iMac's Airport connection to another mac running 10.4.6 over ethernet. I'm using crossover cable, and so far I've got the two computers to recognise each other in Network tab of the Finder, so I can mount the other's HD on my desktop if i wanted. BUT, I am having no luck with sharing my internet connection, I have the 'Share my Airport connection over Ethernet' settings ticked in System Preferences on the iMac with airport, but the "light" on the network overview page is orange on both computers, and the one connected with ethernet does not connect to the internet.
Any idea what I may be doing wrong?
    Thanks a lot
    Mo

You are sharing one connection from the main unit to a secondary unit. The secondary unit only has access through the main unit, so the system doesn't see a personal web connection, just a web connection. In order to share that connection, it must be seen as a "personal" or directly connected form of network. This is so that somebody can't just steal your connection and then filter it to a billion computers and hack you and really mess up your system. If you want to share that connection, I suggest you invest in a wireless router. Then you can share all peripherals from the main unit and other units in any configuration you wish, and then use your secondary(wireless) unit to share directly to the third unit(crossover cable) without having to set a bunch of manual controls and troubleshoot. Printers, some scanners, and sometimes even dvd burners can be shared across a router. And because the system reads two connections(comp-to-comp and comp-to-web) through the router, you can actually fully network all peripherals to work across each unit, so long as they all run the same versions of OS and software. Just remember, you get what you pay for with routers. $100-$200 should get you something decent and a USB speed-booster card wouldn't hurt if you can get it as part of the whole router package. I've used the same type of configuration and it has saved me days, even weeks of trying to move data onto cds and dvds to move between computers for using with different programs and tasks.
    good luck

  • AirPort Express over Ethernet lost the connection

I have an AirPort Express device. It's works well, if I connect it over WLAN. If I connect the AirPort Express over Ethernet via cable, then after about 15 minutes, I lost the connection between my PC and the AirPort Express.
Does I have to change settings in my router?

then when I try to switch it to extending
That is not the correct setting to use.
"Extending" is only used when an AirPort connects using a wireless connection to another AirPort router.
When the AirPort connects using Ethernet, you have to use the "Create a wireless network" setting.
It might be a lot easier if you simply start all over again and let the configuration "wizard" do most of the work for you. All that you really have to do is name the network, name the Express, enter the password and click Next.  Everything else is handled by the configuration utility.
Post back if you are not sure how to do this.

  • Connect via ethernet but wireless for internet

I don't know why, but my apple tv seems to have forgotten how to connect to the internet and I can't make it remember, lol. Now I will stress, this used to work, and I don't know why it suddenly doesn't work anymore...
Basically I have wireless set up at home for the internet. However, I connect to my apple tv via direct ethernet cable between my imac and the apple tv itself. I have set up internet sharing in preferences to share my airport connection over ethernet, which my apple tv used to be able to use ok to connect to the itunes store/you tube, etc. However, it now can't. I had some trouble with it this morning where it wouldn't connect to the ethernet network at all, although it now does. However, it no longer uses the iMac as it's router and I can't seem to figure out why. Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

  • Sharing 802.1x wifi connection via ethernet (to PS3 for example) - workarounds?

The situation is this: my university network is 802.1x wireless, and I need to share the connection over Ethernet to a device that isn't compatible with 802.1x wireless. When I try to do this, Mavericks comes up with a message saying:
Your Internet connection cannot be shared because it is protected by 802.1X.
Now, the workaround that the IT dept has given me is this:
Open apple script editor and paste everything between the lines below into a new file:
    ===================================================================
    try
do shell script "sudo /usr/sbin/sysctl -w net.inet.ip.forwarding=1" with administrator privileges
do shell script "sudo /usr/sbin/natd -interface en1 -dynamic" with administrator privileges
do shell script "sudo /sbin/ipfw add divert natd all from any to any via en1" with administrator privileges
    end try
    ===================================================================
Click on the compile button to make sure there are no errors. Then click on File and Export. Change the File Format to Application. Then click save.
Run the file you have just saved by double clicking on it. You will be prompted for your Mac username and password.
It's not working however. Any thoughts? Anything that I could change?

Thanks for the video, definitely helpful. I followed the steps exactly, but I can only get to the "Test Internet" connection section and it fails.
The Xbox passes the Network section of the test, but the test fails after that.

  • Intermittent AirPort Connectivity Betw iMac Running Snow Leopard And Others

I just installed Snow Leopard on my iMac and also have a MacBook Pro still running Leopard (10.5.8) and an iPod Touch. My internet service provider is Qwest DSL.
Prior to installing Snow Leopard I have successfully been able to use the Internet sharing preference panel and the AirPort utility on my iMac so that my other devices would be able to get reliable internet connectivity from the iMac.
However, since installing Snow Leopard on my iMac, I have had problems being able to pick up the internet connection from my iMac to my MacBook Pro and iPod Touch. It works for a while and then I lose the connection on the MacBook Pro and the iPod Touch, though my iMac still maintains its internet connection.
I have looked at the Internet Sharing Preference Panel on my iMac and it is set to "Internet Sharing On" with "Share Your Connection from: Ethernet" & "To computers using: Airport".
The only (temporary) fix I have found so far is to reboot my iMac and then the MacBook Pro and the iPod Touch are once again able to get their internet connection from the iMac.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what settings I need to change in order to maintain a steady internet connection broadcast from my iMac to my MacBook Pro and iPod Touch?

I have a first gen iPhone and just got mine working today by following these steps.
The following procedure is confirmed to work as written.
Start Internet Sharing if it's not already running.
In Terminal, type cp /etc/bootpd.plist /tmp/bootpd.plist
    Stop Internet Sharing.
Open "open -e /tmp/bootpd.plist" for editing using TextEdit or whatever.
Locate this section of the file, near the end:
    <key>replythresholdseconds</key>
    <integer>4</integer>
Change the value 4 to 0.
In Terminal, type sudo cp /tmp/bootpd.plist /etc
    Start Internet Sharing.
If you want to, check that your change to /etc/bootpd.plist hasn't been reverted.
then i just restarted my phone and everything seems to working for the past few hours.
