Cannot share movies in iMovie 13

Need help in exporting movies to quicktime.
I click the "share" menu choice and nothing happens.

When I click the "Share" menu & pick "File" & pick the size of the file, it gets saved to the "Theater" but not my Desktop.  How do I save it to my Desktop?  Please HELP!!!!!!!  I think the old iMovie was much more user friendly.

  • I cannot 'share' movies in iMovie any more

Having just upgraded to the new iMove, I can no longer share anything. The share buttons repond to the click as a mousedown kind of thing but they dont actuallt do anything!! Frustrating!!

I don't know if this will help, but I'm excited about a recent test I did and am sharing it on several sites --
If your movie is less than about 13 minutes, and you want super quality, I found a way to create a .mov file that fits on a DVD and you can burn it yourself, and anyone can play it.  (I did not use iDVD.)  If you're willing to live with a slightly degraded version, you can put a 106-minute video on a DVD, and it'll look just fine to a group sitting in a room.  Obviously if you want to upload it to a file-sharing site, that's easily doable, as well.
Having slogged my way through iMovie’s “Help,” online Apple Help and numerous blogs like this one with solutions that were frustratingly varied, hard to follow and even outright contradictory, I gave up and did my own methodical tests to see which combination of options and settings yielded the best result for creating a file on my desktop that can be shared. I have no idea what the various and sundry options and settings are doing, but the results (differences) are apparent, and that's all I care about.
Here’s what I worked with:  I have a four-minute movie created in iMovie ’11, with nice titles and credits that fade in and out, and one-second cross dissolves in the film.  The movie is 3x4 aspect ratio, not letterbox.  Looks smooth and clean as can be in iMovie, full screen.  (If it matters, I am working on a Mac OS 10.6.8; Processor 2 x 2.66 Ghz 6-core Intel Xeon; Memory 8 GB 1333 Mhz DDR3.)
Tried exporting through Quicktime and not exporting through Quicktime. Most settings resulted in titles that were either fuzzy or were not clean and smooth during the fades, and often videos that were choppy and would freeze every second or so. Some had clean imagery and would play fine but got very pixelated during transitions (dissolves).  Some that were much larger (higher megabyte numbers) and took longer to  generate the file were actually of lower quality.  Go figure.
Of all the tests I did, the best results came from doing the following. Here are two options:
    A)  For a small, convenient file that came to only 176 MB for my 4-minute movie, if you’re willing to live with some very slight image degradation and titles that show some slight compression during fades -- but looks perfect from across a room:
    1)  Share > Export using Quicktime > “Export: Movie to Quicktime” / “Use: Most Recent Settings”
    2)  Click “Options”
    3)  Click “Settings”
    4)  Compression: MPEG-4 Video
    5)  Frame Rate: Current
    6)  Key Frames: Every 24 frames
    7)  Frame Reordering -- unchecked
    8)  Compressor Quality: Best
    9)  Data Rate: “Restrict to 6400 kbits/sec”
    10)  Click “OK” and return to “Movie Settings”
    11)  Ignore “Filter” unless you want to alter the look of your video.
    12)  Adjust “Size” accordingly to your wishes. I clicked it, then selected “1920 x 1080 HD” and checked “Preserve aspect ratio using: Fit within dimensions.” This results in an image 1440 x 1080 (to fit within 1920 x 1080).  Remember that if you don’t preserve your original aspect ratio you’ll get a larger/wider movie, but the top and bottom of your image will be cut off.
    13)  If your video is silent, make sure “Sound” is unchecked. I read that this speeds up the file-creating process.
    14)  Hit “OK”
    15)  Be sure to check where you want your file to appear. I chose “Desktop.”
    16)  Hit “Save”
That’s it!  In my case, after about six minutes, I had a “.mov” file on my desktop that anyone can easily play (people may have to have Quicktime, though, as I understand it, but I believe that’s a free download; you do NOT need Quicktime Pro which costs $).  I uploaded the file to a file-sharing site (Hightail) for others to download, and, testing it, it took me only a few moments to download (I have a FiOS fiber-optic connection, so if you don’t, it will likely take a little longer).  The downloaded file played perfectly and suffered no degradation whatever from the one I generated to my desktop from iMovie.
    B)  For a super high-res version, if you’re willing to live with the size, the ONLY difference is No. 9: Change your Data Rate to “Automatic.”  But as mentioned in the beginning, a standard DVD-R will only hold about 13 minutes of footage at this quality.  If you're only concerned about sending a movie to someone else or a group, upload to a file-sharing site, no problem.
Oddly, this super-quality version took about the same six minutes to generate the desktop .mov file, but the resulting 1.44 GB file is far, far superior.  You’ll be thrilled with the result!
The only downside –– to all of the file tests I did –– is that there is a slight loss of color saturation and contrast from the original iMovie imagery I worked with, particularly with the reds and oranges which become a bit muted.  The blacks/darks came up a bit, yielding slightly less contrast.  But these drawbacks are minor, to me.
If someone knows of a way to preserve the exact original color saturation and contrast, I’m all ears.
    Ken M.

  • Cannot find movie in Imovie in any drive?

Movie plays well in Imovie but I can't find the specific file for it. I'm fairly certain that it's in a large folder on the external drive but when I copied it to the internal, and set the external folder in the trash, and tried to open it in Imovie it said it couldn't open it because it was in the trash.
I changed the name of the project from the name of the big folder to another name about 3/4 of the way through editing.

if you can get it open by any method, Save As... to another project.

  • Cannot share movies again the the new version

I had trouble shating movies when I updated to maveric. I updated to the latest version 10.0.1 and it worked until now and sharing is again unavailable. Also the programme is very slow and clunkey, far worse than the old pre Maveric version. Is this issue being addressed?

    jhmdesign,
When you open iCal, do any calendars show in the calendar's column at all?
If iCal is reset completely back to the first time you opened it, Home and Work should show. If there is not calendar's showing at all, that is a different issue.
For a first step, try reseting Sync History via iSync.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • Created a movie in IMOVIE and transferred it to dvd but cannot get it to play on my dvd player.  i downloaded the free Burn program since i don't have idvd on my new mac  the dvd comes up disk error or cannot read

created a movie in IMOVIE and transferred it to dvd but cannot get it to play on my dvd player.  i downloaded the free Burn program since i don't have idvd on my new mac  the dvd comes up disk error or cannot read.  I am using a dvd-r dvd and my dvd player says that it uses this type of dvd.  Any suggestions.  I spoke to an Apple Support person who helped me burn the dvd but it still didn't work...help???

There's a difference between a data DVD, and a DVD-Video.  I believe you made a data DVD, which can't be played in a video player.  The Burn feature of the Finder can't author a DVD-V, just data discs.
I assume you made a Project, and put clips from your Event Library into the Project.  But then, how did you output your Project, using the SHARE menu?
When I pull down iMovie '11s SHARE menu, "iDVD..." is one of the options.  It's the job of iDVD to make the menu that appears when you insert a DVD into your player (that says the title, and chapters, and extras, etc.).  You need software that will made a DVD-V disc.  Lacking that, you might be able to go to Share/Export Movie... or Share/Export using QuickTime... to get your video into a format that software like Roxio's Toast could burn.

  • Cannot share to iMovie from the Quicktime x player.  I get a pop up message that says "iMovie has not been set up".

I get a pop-up window when I try to share a movie with imovie "iMovie has not been set up".  I have trashed the imovie plist and repaired permissions, I restarted imovie to see if that helps but to no avail.  It is not a major issue but it would be nice to have that option seeing as I will be using imovie more frequently since Avidemux does not work on lion.  All the other share options seem to function so I am a bit stumped as to why this option is not working.
    Thank you for your time.

I get a pop-up window when I try to share a movie with imovie "iMovie has not been set up".
Have any of you actually opened/used iMovie yet? It appears the shared file is temporarily stored in an "iMovie Drop Box" which is placed in an "iMovie Events" folder either in the "Music" folder of the current user's account on the boot drive or placed in an "iMovie Events" folder at the root level of a non-booted hard drive. It is likely that if QT X can't find/can't see any "iMovie Events" folder, it will issue the "not set up" modal message you are seeing.
When working correctly, the QT X "iMovie" shared file is placed in the "iMoviie Drop Box" folder (even if it has to create a new folder initially) where it sits until you next open iMovie. When iMovie opens, it scans all available "iMovie Events" folders and if it detects anything in the drop box, will ask you if you want to import them. During import, the files are simply moverd from the drop box to the named_Event folder you specify. Be advised that if you delete the drop box from the "iMovie Events" folder, you may later get a different modal message telling you the system cannot find the "iMovie Drop Box" the next time you try to share a QT X file to iMovie.

  • I cannot export my movies from iMovie since updating to Mavericks.

I cannot export my movies from iMovie since updating to Mavericks. I can get it into Theater then it says "Creating movie" but nothing happens. I can select share movie into a file, I can pick a name, resolution and location, but it doesn't save. I get the blue circle in the top right hand corner but nothing seems to happen. iMovie used to work perfectly, I cannot believe the update has ruined it!!!!

  • I am using iMovie 10 with Maverick but cannot share to burn to DVD...

I have spent hours creating a montage but find I cannot share to iDVD to burn to DVD. Does anyone have a suggestion?

How To Use Share With Maverick
In iMovie select the movie you wish to share from the library on the left.
    Select “Share”
Select “File” (the name of the selected movie will appear)
Save to Desktop (this may take a while but you can check by double-clicking on that desktop icon which starts the movie playing in Quicktime. You can play the movie very quickly (say at 32 speed) to be sure it’s all there.
    Leave iMovie open.
    Insert a DVD
    Open iDVD
Select the 3 small boxes icon next to the blue arrows in a circle.
When it opens, drag the movie icon from the desktop into the first box on the left (Not the “Cinema Chapters” box…and the movie title appears.
Insert a DVD disk and select the “Burn” icon-you will get a message that all’s not okay (There were warnings during the project validation. It is recommended that you fix these problems before burning the project) but ignore it and select “continue to burn”.
The movie burned just fine and I tested the DVD on our DVD player. However  when I tried inserting titles down below in iMovie and Sharing to a File, when I went to test it by double-clicking on the desktop icon a got a message that it could not read the format (although in MP-4 just like the movie without titles. Tried this with Quicktime 7 and FlipMac-no luck. So when I dragged that icon into the first box on IDVD it also there could not recognize the format-I’ll keep working on this but at least I can now burn a DVD movie.

Go to the Map mode in your iDVD project and make sure the blue bin at the left is empty.  That's where you drag slideshows to if you want the DVD to open immediately to that slideshow and bypass the menu.
If there is an item in there drag it out.

  • I just created a movie in iMovie 10.0.5 and shared it to iTunes but I cannot copy to my iPod touch

I just created a movie in iMovie 10.0.5 and shared it to iTunes but I cannot copy to my iPod touch.  It says the movie was not copied because it cannot be played on this iPod. My iPod was bought in 2009 and has the latest iOS 4.2.1.  I also tried sharing in all the different resolutions but none of them worked.
    What should I do?

If necessary use a converter app to convert to compatible format. I use the free HandBrake

Hi I have created a movie using iMovie 10.0.6 on a macbook pro using Yosemite 10. I want to burn this movie to a dvd to use on any dvd player.
I have "shared" to a file and saved it to a named folder, but it just disappears into thin air. I cannot drag this file into an application because there is no file.
    This is very frustrating, Help.

  • IMovie cannot share and no storage location set

I am using iMovie 10.0.6 on a Retina iMac running Yosemite.
iMovie suddenly developed the following maddening behavior, which I have yet to resolve despite trying many of the usual tricks:
Attempting to import to an event using my isight camera or my Canon HV20 camera in a library on my internal SSD results in the following popup message: "No storage location set: Cannot start ingest because there is not storage location set. Please set one under Storage in Preferences and try again."
It is possible to import by loading a file to my local library.  However creating a project with that file results in the strange behavior that the clips from that file remain blue and don't fill in with the preview.
I cannot share or export any project.  Clicking "Share" in file or the "Share" button displays the options, by when I click on the share option, nothing happens.
Importing to library in an external hard drive succeeds without the error message.  The clips in the projects created in the external libarary do fill in with the preview pictures.   However, I am not able to share or export a project in the external library either.
When I log into my son's account on the same machine, iMovie works fine.  I am able to import to his accounts library and I'm able to share, the share button works as normal.
I have tried the following remedies, none have worked:
1)delete the iMovie app and reinstall.
2)delete every iMovie preference in ~/Library/preferences
    3)delete iMovie caches
    4)delete iMovie receipts
    5)repair permissions using disk utility
6)reset user permissions and ACLs using "reset user password" in terminal
7)reinstall Yosemite from recovery (preserving user files)
    8) reset pram and SMC
There must be some very hidden persistent setting corrupted that is either verry hidden or not explicitly part of iMovie; perhaps a common sharing or video import application?  Does anyone have any ideas?

Brilliant - it worked for me, although I had to look around inside the
    /var/folders/
and found it under another with two letter
    Thank you ultrahertz
