Cannot start CSS on non-RAC Env.

OS: Sun SPARC Solairs 10
Oracle: 10.2.0 64bit with ASM
Installed Oracle software only and ran root.sh at the end. Oracle cannot start css and giving up... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks much!

  • The CSSD does not start automatically on Non-RAC - AIX 5L

    Hi all,
    Database: Oracle 10.2.0.4
    O.S AIX 5.3 TL 10
I am facing a problem with the CSSD Non-RAC/Clusterware.
When we restarted the server the service CSSD does not start automatically and there is no relevant messages in the log files of CSSD.
Running the "localconfig reset $ORACLE_HOME", execute successfully but does not start the CSSD.
Running "/etc/init.cssd start" - does not work, nothing happens when we run it
I manually ran "/etc/ init.cssd run" and the service CSSD (ossd.bin) was started without errors.
No errors on errpt from AIX.
I've opened a SR but I am waiting for response from Oracle.

    Hi,
I believe this problem is not with Oracle, but in AIX.It may be that one process that is starting on boot is holding the other process. You need to identify what is process/application.
Check the process on inittab that are already active and which are inactive they should be active.
One clue: Is very common process that is initiated in wait mode hold the boot server.
    wait
When the init command enters the run level that matches the entry's run level,
start the process and wait for its termination.
All subsequent reads of the /etc/inittab file while the init
command is in the same run level will cause the init command to ignore this entry.http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/aix/v6r1/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.aix.files/doc/aixfiles/inittab.htm

  • Configuring multiple listeners in a non-RAC env.

    Hi,
Our database is being made as many as 35 requests per second by the application during peak hours. This is causing the listener to die. Metalink suggested to configure more listeners so that they can balance the load. When I tried to configure 2 listeners on the local server, one of the listeners are not working propoerly.
I am posting the listenerr.ora and their statuses along with the error messages here. Can someone help me understand the problem?

But shared server is not always better than a dedicated server.I did not say it was - only that if you're expecting loads of brand new connection requests to be services fast by the Listener, then shared server will be significantly faster than dedicated server.
Frequency of connections may be handled better by the use of shared server, but how about holding thousands and thousands of connections and serving all their requests by using some preemptive mechanism? Many years ago, I configured an Oracle 8i instance on my desktop PC with shared server and told the Java guys to try their worst. See how many threads they can open against my desktop PC instance versus the big HP server instance. The latter was using dedicated server and they were kind of thinking that this was somehow better than shared server. They could open less than a few hundred connections to the big server. They opened over a 1000 connections to my desktop instance.
Shared  Server is and never was a poor and second choice to Dedicated Server as some seems to suggest. It is extremely capable and ideally suited when dealing with a huge number of connections.
In our application, number of connections would reach thousands during peak hours and large number of REALLY BIG queries would be fired by each of them in a small time period. I would say these BIG QUERIES can be termed as OLAP queries, while our main stream application is a OLTP system. It must be apparent to you by now, our database (non-RAC) is supporting an application that gives OLAP and OLTP queries at a very high frequency. A big query ito what? Resource footprint? Source code size of the query? Execution time of the query?
If you have 100's of OLAP type queries (complex and long running queries) hitting the server every few seconds, then your server will die. Unless you are running some seriously expensive hardware.
That aside - it is only a sensible approach to use shared server in an environment that deals with 1000's of OLTP type connections. And if there is an OLAP mix too, then configure those connections to request dedicated server connections.
Why? The shared server scales a lot better than dedicated server. And scalability is what you want in this type of environment.

  • Cannot start X11 as non-root user

Yes I know, there are about a billion threads about this issue, but I'm afraid none of them have helped me so far.
So, basically as root I can startx just fine. But when I try to startx as my user "hb", I see the Nvidia logo and it jumps back to the console. It doesn't display any real errors, apart from some font and keyboard stuff, which isn't fatal to starting the X server as far as I know. The Xorg.0.log doesn't display any errors at all. So I really don't have a clue what the problem is.
I've installed Arch Linux just a week ago on this laptop and I didn't have any problems whatsoever, but I've tried to reinstall 3 times today and X11 keeps refusing to work...
I've used nvidia-xconfig to configure xorg.conf and I followed the wiki instructions (which worked for me the last time). But considering X11 works for root, the config file should be okay, right?

I don't have a window manager installed yet. Seemed rather pointless when X wasn't working yet. The .xinitrc is there, but doesn't exec anything. But in the previous install I installed xfce4 and had .xinitrc do "exec xfce4-session", and the result was the same as now: X starts then jumps back to console.

This is the "Settings" part of ~/.config/rncbc.org/QJackCtl.conf, but I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the problem, since starting JACK with jack_control doesn't work either:

I have found similar threads, but all differ from my situation and the solutions suggested do not seem to work for me. Some people suspect PulseAudio to be the culprit, I tried to redirect ALSA to PulseAudio, and that to JACK without any effect. I don't think I use PulseAudio, but then again, I run Gnome, and gnome-settings-daemon seems to depend on it.
    Any suggestions are much appreciated!
    Thank you.

    Hey ids1024,
thank you for your answer. I am now using PulseAudio (which was indeed installed before, but somehow didn't start at boot), and it works very well, also with JACK - as long as I run jack_control as root. As a normal user, it's the same issue as before. I'm not sure if PulseAudio has anything to do with that at all.
EDIT: I installed pulseaudio-alsa. Now I can start JACK as non-root user! However, JACK - although it registers with PulseAudio, as shown by pavucontrol -  doesn't output any sound. Unless I'm root, of course.

  • Cssd does not start in non-RAC environment Thus we can not bring up ASM

    Non-RAC environment
    ASM version = 11.1.0.7
    HP-UX Itanium 11.23
After power outage, CSSD does not start on non-RAC environment
Running as root "/sbin/init.d/init.cssd start" does not start cssd
Oracle support tried "$ASM_HOME/bin/localconfig delete" and "$ASM_HOME/bin/localconfig add"
but it did not start CSS
Oracle support tried "$ASM_HOME/bin/localconfig reset $ASM_HOME"
It started the CSSD and the "crsctl check css" came back with CSS is healthy
But around 1 minute later it rebooted the server and when it came up again CSS does not start.
They checked /etc/inittab and it looked fine.
Before the reboot we saw this message in the /var/adm/syslog/OLDsyslog.log:
Cluster Ready Services completed waiting on dependencies
Again it is a NON-RAC environment. We only need CSSD for ASM. We do not have CRS installed on this server.
Our test system has been down for a week and we did not get the resolution from Oracle support yet !
    Any pointers are greately appriciated.
    Thanks,
    Dzung

  • Changes between a RAC(Objects) and NON RAC

    Hi all,
I want to findout what all the different things to be considered when an application is made to run on RAC env.
For eg: I found there is a difference between the way the Sequences are used in a RAC env from Non RAC.
Are there any guidelines for the Objects used in RAC?
Also can you point me to any doc related to tuning the interconnect as we are identifying wait events related to cluster "Cluster was consuming significant database time"
    Thanks.

    Hi hyddba,
Absolutely, at database level for application has no changes at objects.
At application code has changes to benefit aplications from failover TAF and FAN events.

  • Configuring Non RAC physical standby fro RAC

    Hi,
    EBS-R12i , Oracle Database:11g
We are in project design phase and following is the hardware setup for Critical banking domain:
    Database (2 node RAC)-Solaris 10
Application server server (2 server) -Solaris 10
Web server (2 server for Failover)= RHEL
    For DR
    Database (1 node)-Solaris 10
    need to know
1.What are the best practice to implement this kind of setup and steps to configure DR as Non-RAC physical standby for RAC database server.
2.What are implication if we go for single node except failover node unavailability for DR.
3.What are the steps of Switchover in this case.
4.What's the recommended backup solution for this setup of 8-10 Terabyte database with db growth rate of 50% per year.

1.What are the best practice to implement this kind of setup and steps to configure DR as Non-RAC physical standby for RAC database server. There really aren't any differences in setting up your physical standby in a non-RAC configuration. It is after the physical standby is setup that it is converted to a clustered database, if desired. In your case, you do not desire the conversion.
The best place to start for best practices in setting up your physical standby is the Oracle documentation on the subject.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e17022/toc.htm
2.What are implication if we go for single node except failover node unavailability for DR.The major implications are that you will be running with less horsepower after a failover. So depending on your DR resources, you may have to scale back application access. In addition to less resources, you will also have less availability because you only have one node. Should that node then fail, you will not have a node to failover to.
3.What are the steps of Switchover in this case. The steps are identical if the physical standby is a single node or multiple nodes. These steps are outlined in the Oracle documentation.
4.What's the recommended backup solution for this setup of 8-10 Terabyte database with db growth rate of 50% per year. What are your recovery requirements? Without knowing your recovery requirements, a valid backup solution cannot be determined. How much data loss can you afford in the event of a failure? Do you have data that can be read only? In the event of a failure, how long before you are required to be up and running? Are you required to restore and recover at an offsite location?
    Cheers,
    Brian

  • Can I use data guard to create a RAC standby database for a non RAC primary

    Hi,
we need to RAC our production database but the normal methods will mean a long outage. It is possible to create a standby as a single node RAC database and when ready do a graceful failover to the standby database and open it for business. The next step would be to create another RAC node from this on the original server.
servers are already cluster aware, using ASM etc
    Oracle 10.2

Yes, you will be able to setup RAC stnadby for a non-RAC Primary. For primary it just needs a available destination for redo shipping it doesn't matter whether it's RAC enabled or not. And ofcourse you are using 10.2 anyway only one node will be running MRP and that is too in standby mount mode.
However since you have are using You may follow below sequence.
    1. Setup a new standby as RAC enabled.
    2. Perform a switchover.
    3. Shutdown the Old primary (which is standby now).
    4. Install CRS and RDBMS on the old primary and it's new node.
    5. Modify the cluster_database=TRUE and cluster_database_instances=<required number of instances>.
With above modification mount the standby database in standby mode and start MRP.
    6. Introduce the database and instances to the OCR using SRVCTL add command.
    7. Once you your database is synchronized with Primary do a switchover.
    9. Now you can repeat step 3 to 6 on the other site too.   <- if you need your secondary site to be RAC enabled too
    10. Finally both the sites should be RAC enabled.
    Hope this is helpful!!!
    Thanks,
    Asif Haliyal

  • Urgent: cannot start the shadow instance at phase STARTSAP_TRANS

We are upgrading to NW2004s (ABAP only) from 640.
    <u><b>How to re-start the shadow instance?</b></u>
At this point, <b>anyway we cannot start the shadow instance.</b>
    At SAPMMC, the disp+work
    1) first show "running but the dialog queue standstill"
    2) then show" running but not connected to the message server"
    3) then the disp+work dies.
Above happens in 1 minute after re-start.

Your system is configured as a non-Unicode SCP (Single Code Page) configuration.
If you plan to perform a Unicode Conversion after the upgrade, you may choose to perform a combined
    Upgrade and Unicode Conversion.
In this case, several of the migration preparation steps can be done already on the start release
or on the upgrade shadow system.
For further information, please refer to OSS note 928729.

The PREPARE module Import will be started now.
During this module programs, structures, and table entries
required by PREPARE are imported (the socalled "tool import").
Note: This can cause a loss of performance in R/3
In rare cases, a concurrent transport via the transport directory
may disturb the tool import. Please avoid any concurrent import
    during this PREPARE module.

    Problem
I installed the sound blaster into a brand new system with the specs above. Tried all the PCI slots, tried different bios versions, drivers that came on the cd and newest ones, different amounts of ram. However I still can't get the card to work just keep getting the error message "This device cannot start. (Code 0)". Any ideas?

    I've tried enabling/disabling UAC.
I've run the drivers as an admin.
I've formatted a few times just to make sure no driver conflicts.
Also I've tested the card on another PC running XP sp3 works fine.
PCI slot works fine as well tested with an ethernet card.
    You've tried about everything.
Did you try to disable any non essential onboard devices (HD Audio, LAN, additional SATA/IDE controller etc)?
What about installing XP on a spare dri've?
