I have found similar threads, but all differ from my situation and the solutions suggested do not seem to work for me. Some people suspect PulseAudio to be the culprit, I tried to redirect ALSA to PulseAudio, and that to JACK without any effect. I don't think I use PulseAudio, but then again, I run Gnome, and gnome-settings-daemon seems to depend on it.
    Any suggestions are much appreciated!
    Thank you.

    Hey ids1024,
thank you for your answer. I am now using PulseAudio (which was indeed installed before, but somehow didn't start at boot), and it works very well, also with JACK - as long as I run jack_control as root. As a normal user, it's the same issue as before. I'm not sure if PulseAudio has anything to do with that at all.
EDIT: I installed pulseaudio-alsa. Now I can start JACK as non-root user! However, JACK - although it registers with PulseAudio, as shown by pavucontrol -  doesn't output any sound. Unless I'm root, of course.

    Hello,
after having had no problems with koffice for a long time, i lately fail to open any koffice Program as normal user (as root i still can open them) getting always a similar error message (just the program name is changing; here it is the message for krita):

Please help me getting koffice programs to start as a normal user again,

Permissions seemed to be set all right and removing the config files in my home directory couldn't convince koffice to start, but removing also the files under /var/tmp and /tmp finally helped. Thanks for the way leading advice,

  • Cannot start xfce4 desktop environment

    Hello all,
I have just installed a fresh Arch install. I cannot seem to start the xfce4 gui though.
I have installed the xfce4 package, yet when i run startxfce4 i receive the following error.
    /usr/bin/startxfce4: Starting X server
/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc: line 1: /usr/bin/xfce: No such file or directory

Have you manually edited /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc? I have just checked and /usr/bin/xfce does not exist on my system. As a workaround, you could try installing a display manager (XDM/KDM/GDM/SLiM) and try to start xfce from there. As another option, you could use a .xinitrc file with 'exec startxfce4' and run X using 'startx'.

  • Cannot start weblogic 8.1 User is not permitted to boot the server

    Hi,
Sorry to cross-post, but I didn't seem to get any feedback on this in the 'security' newsgroup.
I have installed Weblogic 8.1SP3 on two identical workstations as well as deployed our application. On one server WL8.1 starts up fine. On another, it says "BEA-090404 user weblogic 8.1 is not permitted to boot the server".
The OS'es are identical: Windows XP Pro SP2.
The only difference I can think of: one is logged into a windows-domain, the other directly onto the PC.
I've ran diffs-ignoring-whitespace (i.e. diff -w) on the important-looking files (.ldift and config.xml) and don't see any differences that would warrant such difference.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks,
    bill

when you installed the WLS , which admin user did you >create ?Admin user 'weblogic'. Actually someon did this long ago and checked in the generated config files (boot.properties) into our source tree?
So, in which mode do you start the WLS ? development or >production ?This I don't know.
    Our setup is as follows:
    1) We install weblogic (server only)
    2) Run our ant scripts
    3) Ant populates and deploys the config files and pe.ear file to a new domain.
    4) we start weblogic from a script in that domain: startWeblogic.cmd
    <Jul 20, 2007 8:17:35 AM CDT> <Info> <Configuration Management> <BEA-150016> <This server is being started as the administration server.>
    <Jul 20, 2007 8:17:35 AM CDT> <Info> <Management>
We use a few app servers and use a similar paradigm: install, deploy from build tree, start from script.
My question: where do you specify that 'user weblogic is member of the administrator group' ?

from the message above, we can see if it failed to start the "Adapter services"
If we change the user/group back to Oracle/Dba, it starts fine.
And also, we have under $ORACLE_BASE/admin, the listener ( name devl ) permission has been changed accordingly to the user/group change. We follow the instruction from OAS configuration to change user/group.

    Thanks.

Thanks. After a few more days testing. We finally figure out where it went wrong. We changed user/group from node manager. ( from Oracle/dba, installer, to nobody/nobody). After that, we only changed $ORACLE_BASE/admin/ows/SITE_name/httpd-host_name/listener_name to be read and write accessed by nobody. We forgot to change owl.cfg to be read access to nobody/nobody. After we changed that. It starts fine.
    Thanks again.

  • [Solved] Cannot start wireless network as user, only as root

    Hi All,
I have just made the move from Ubuntu Hardy as I couldn't stand all the constant freezing. I have followed the Beginners Guide to installing Arch and found it to be a very interesting learning experience. However, as the post title says, although I can get a working internet connection as rot, he moment I login as a user, I cannot get access, and get the error message "SIOCGIFFLAGS error: No such device".
I have added my user account to network and wheel etc, but to no avail. I still have to open a root terminal and manually bring the network up every time. As a side issue, I cannot sudo as my user account even though I am in the wheel group.
Can anyone help please? Let m know what you need to see from my conf files. I am running 64 bit as well.
    Many thanks,
    Igzilla

For the first question... what are you trying to use to configure the network. Typically network connection is a root only thing and you shouldnt need to do it as a user directly.
For sudo, you need to configure sudo. Run 'visudo' as root.

  • [SOLVED] XFCE4 Will Not Open When Logged On as Regular User

Please excuse me if I am being a noob, but I only installed ArchLinux yesterday. Whenever  I run

Also, when I try to start xfconfd it gives me this:

I also checked the environment variable $XDG-CONFIG-DIRS and it is set correctly, and the xfce4-session installation did not return any error messages.

  • "User names cannot start with a number" error while adding a user

Is it possible to use WL Portal 7.0 admin framework to manage users with all numeric

I got an error "User names cannot start with a number" while trying to add users
with all numeric user ids. I am using "portalAppTools" web app provided with WL

What "out the box" functionality do I need to change to make this happen ? Thanks

The problem is that when we have user groups starting with a number, then the search
feature doesn't work for user groups (case # 466837 with BEA).
So, which brings me to the following question:
    a. Should the search feature work?
    b. What is the limitation? I mean, it is designed not to allow user groups starting
with a number. So, there must be a reason for this. So, if we change "disallowFirstCharDigit",
will it have any impacts on Portal?
As an aside, it seems somewhat strange that the Portals can start with a number!
    Thanks in advance

  • Gnome won't start for regular user

I've got Xorg installed, and KDE.  These both work fine for regular users.  I decided to put Gnome on the box and play with it, and it loads fine for root.  When I log in as a regular user and try to start Gnome, it comes up with an ugly desktop, a splash screen, then just an X for the mouse on the ugly desktop.
I'm assuming this must be a permissions problem, but I'm not sure what needs to be changed.  I checked out the gnome and kde directories, and everything seems to be owned by root, so I know I'm missing something somewhere.
If permissions, what needs to be changed?  If not, then what?

I've upgraded to gnome 2.12, it still doesn't load
As it _tries_ to load, it brings up a message box saying "gnome-settings-handler could not be started" or something to that effect, which basically means nothing can run.
    I tried deleting /tmp, didn't work.
    I'm getting _really_ frustrated
I dont want to go back to XFCE (I dont want to open another terminal just to eject my dvd drive ever again), and I'm getting insanely sick of KDE.. it's just un-usable..
Sorry if anyone out there likes KDE.. no offence.. but I just find it un-usable..

  • Cannot start AdminServer after adding weblogic user to OID

    Hi.
We have two OIDs: one is used in the production env, the other in dev.
I succeeded in configuring SOA-dev and OID-dev so that worklist users get authenticated against OID-dev.
Moreover I added the weblogic user to OID-dev following this guide (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E15523_01/integration.1111/e10224/bp_worklist.htm#insertedID2), so that weblogic can login and administer the worklist.
I repeated the steps in PROD env (for SOA-prod and OID-prod) but after adding weblogic to OID-prod I cannot start AdminServer-prod:
<Mar 10, 2011 5:31:01 PM CET> <Critical> <Security> <BEA-090404> <User weblogic is not permitted to boot the server; The server policy may have changed in such a way that the user is no longer able to boot the server.Reboot the server with the administrative user account or contact the system administrator to update the server policy definitions.>

Truncated. see log file for complete stacktrace
Anyway, configuring SOA-prod to use OID-dev (simply switching OID ip address) makes things work.
If I enable SSL between SOA-prod and OID-prod I can start the servers but I cannot login into the worklist. The same in DEV: enabling SSL between OID-dev and SOA-dev does not influence server boot but I cannot login into the worklist.
I think the problem is related to SSL configurtaion in OID-prod but since it's 10g there is no orclsslinteropmode to disable (required to worklistapp).
SOA is 11.1.1.2 and OID 10g.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for your precious help,
    Michael

    Hi Anuj.
Thank you very much for you help.
My situation is a bit different: we do not want to use two OIDs at the same time.
In PROD the order of auth providers is
    1. OIDAuth-prod
    2. DefaultAuthenticator
    whereas in DEV it is:
    1. OIDAuth-dev
    2. DefaultAuthenticator
Id DEV server boot and worklist login are ok.
OIDs are v10.1.2.3 but OID-prod is updated with the latest security patches (of Oct 2010). I will raise a SR.
    Thanks again,

    All,
Just installed SS12.1 with patches successfully on a box with root. Can execute various
progs (CC, make, etc) as root OK. However when running as a regular user I get permission denied errorsor command not found errors. The path is set correctly (/usr/bin is part of the path).
What am I missing here - must be something simple, I'm sure...

    Igor,
Thanks for the reply, I've managed to sort it earlier - it turned out the directory it was installed into did not allow regular user/world execute access - only root's.
I've used the package installer btw, if it makes it useful for other people stumbling on this.

I don't have Exchange or anything like that. I did delete the Windows 8 Mail tile, would that have done anything? I've tried deleting the .ost file and opening again, but it's still coming up. My email is also an old fairly irrelevant server (mweb.co.za).
I've looked on the Outlook 2013 pages here but nothing's working. I can't get outlook to open my gmail address either. Do I need to convert the .ost files or something?

    Hi,
First, we can try to open Outlook with /resetnavpane command to check if this problem is caused by corrupted Navigation Pane settings. To do this, press Windows key + R to open the Run command, type
    outlook.exe /resetnavpane and press Enter.
If the issue persists, we can try to create a new mail profile in Control Panel and set up your email account in the new profile to check the result. To create a new mail profile, please refer:

For more troubleshooting steps, please refer to this link:
