Cannot start xfce4 desktop environment

Hello all,
I have just installed a fresh Arch install. I cannot seem to start the xfce4 gui though.
I have installed the xfce4 package, yet when i run startxfce4 i receive the following error.
/usr/bin/startxfce4: Starting X server
/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc: line 1: /usr/bin/xfce: No such file or directory
/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc: line 1: exec: /usr/bin/xfce: cannot execute: No such file or directory
<init: giving up
<init: unable to connect to X sercer: Connection refused
<init: server error

Have you manually edited /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc? I have just checked and /usr/bin/xfce does not exist on my system. As a workaround, you could try installing a display manager (XDM/KDM/GDM/SLiM) and try to start xfce from there. As another option, you could use a .xinitrc file with 'exec startxfce4' and run X using 'startx'.
Edit: typo

  • Impossible to start the desktop environment after upgrade failure

Hello, after a long time without doing upgrades on my archlinux, I tried it once today. The upgrade failed, there were some packages conflit. Then nautilus and terminal were unable to be launched, so I restarted my PC. But when it's supposed to display the login window, the screen became black with a little clock instead of the mouse point.
Anyone can tell me how can I recovery my desktop environnement please?
If it isn't possible, how can I copy my data on a USB disk?
    Thank you.

First question, is the gdm daemon in your rc.conf or your inittab?
If it is in the inittab, then append the number 3 to the end of the grub kernel init string. This will boot to runlevel 3, and leave you in a text console.
If it is in rc.conf...well, if you can Ctrl+Alt+Bkspc out of the X session with the little clock, then just run from the console, then that's easy. Otherwise switch to another console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and log in, then try doing
    killall gdm
As a last resort, you can always boot to single user by putting 1 at the end of the grub init string instead of 3.
After you are in the console, then try doing xinit /usr/bin/gnome-session and see if it works. If not, then you can try rolling back packages and whatnot.
Also, check /var/log/pacman.log and paste the failures you got.

The problem is when i use java web start for opening the Design platform, it starts to download the *.jar files  by specifying <hostname> xyz, hence unable to download the .jar files and hence not able to start the Design time and Configuration time Environments!
    Help Appreciated
    Regards,

    Hi Ramesh,
Assuming you are using Windows environment, do the following in the m/c you are running integration builder:
Go to Start->Run->Type drivers->Ok->go to folder etc->open hosts file with notepad->in the last line, set your XI Server hostname and provide the IP for the same. (An entry for 127.0.0.1 localhost will already exist in the file)->Save and Close. Now try running SXMB_IFR.

  • Cannot start lenovo desktop Model No. H530S

I have a lenovo desktop Model No. H530S and am having problems starting it at all.
It keeps requesting the System Power on Password, which I did not set so I have no Idea what it is!
Also when I go into the BIOS setup screen, everything is completely out of allignment and pretty much impossible to read. (I have linked to some screenshots of it below so you can see what I mean.) Also is is not possible to change a single setting in any of these screens, for some reason it appears to have locked me out of everything!
I have even tried booting a portable OS from a USB key, just to try to get in, but it just locks me out when I get the System Power on Password incorrect 3 times.
Is there any help or advice you could give me as I'm totally stuck!?

    Hi Jadugar,
    Welcome to Lenovo forums
As I understood that you are looking for the graphics card which is compatible with your H530s desktop.
As this model is compatible with AMD Radeon HD  up to  2GB or NVIDIA GeForce GT 635 2GB.
Also you need to install the driver which supports these graphic cards.
Hope this helps! Do post us back for further queries.
    Best regards,

  • Cannot access desktop environment, neither gnome nor awesome

    Hi All,
My Archlinux has been installed for a while when suddenly, maybe after one `yaourt -Syu` and reboot, cannot reach my desktop environment(gnome).
At first, it seems like gdm doesn't run. So I manually run it, but the gnome reports an error in the GUI (the error is very general, so I have no idea what happened at all). Then I tried to install awesome, but I can't access to it as well.
I've tried to switch my graphical driver from nouveau to nvidia, but I still can't get into Gnome. Surprisingly, I get into awesome successfully. However, I failed to open any terminal or application but quit awesome.
I've tried to replace sysvinit with systemd-sysvcompat after switching my graphical driver back to nouveau. By doing that, gdm seems to run at boot up, but I still can access Gnome, because the computer just halt and the graphical interface never come up. Neither can I access awesome.
I can't figure out where the problem is. My desktop environment used to function normal for a long time. What could possibly be wrong after any upgrade?

    1)  What was updated.
    2)  What are the errors.
    3)  What can you find in the various logs and/or journal.

  • After MS13-098 and SecurityAdvisory(2915720), Windows Server 2003 Remote Desktop(TermService) cannot start service

I have trouble with Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard. I installed the KB2893294(MS13-098) patch, and I changed the registry that is suggested actions of Security Advisory(2915720) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/advisory/2915720
    Suggested Actions:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Cryptography\Wintrust\Config]
    "EnableCertPaddingCheck"="1"
After rebooting the event viewer(system) says:
     Event Type: Error
     Event Source: TermService
     Event Category: None
     Event ID: 1014
     User:  N/A
     Description:
     Cannot load illegal module: C:\Windows\system32\rdpwsx.DLL
After I cannot use Remote Desktop Connection from other client.
So I check the all security patches and other hotfixies. I checked the KB2653956 and KB958476.
But TermService do not recover the error.
And then, I delete the "EnableCertPaddingCheck" registry and reboot systems.
TermService have no error. I can use Remote Desktop Connection from other client.
After KB2893294 installed, Remote Desktop Connection cannot use from other client that "EnableCertPaddingCheck" registry set to "1".
Other Windows Server 2008 systems do not effect the KB2893294 patch. But All Windows Server 2003 systems cannot use the Remote Desktop Connections after the KB2893294 patch.

    Update on this issue:
The debug team has accepted the issue and has identified it as a regression.  Right now they're targeting *June* as the release date for a fix.  I'm attempting to educate them that customers don't just install patches the day (or even month) they're
released and that the fix needs to be moved up in priority to give a minimum of 60 days to install the patch before the time-bomb explodes.
In the meantime, a workaround has been provided that will turn off the new functionality.  Note that I have not yet had a chance to test this.  It entails creating a new DWORD registry entry--UseLegacyPE--and setting it to 1.
    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ImageHlp\UseLegacyPE
I will update this thread when I have further information.

Could anyone help me to figure this out? Thanks.
    Edit:
I have also tried running `swc-launch -- velox`, and get the following error:
    Running on /dev/tty2
velox: error while loading shared libraries: libinput.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    Server exited with status 127
    Restoring VT to original state
So, perhaps I am having some libinput trouble. Does this seem correct?

Seems that the problem lies in libinput. Maybe you can report that upstream. I suggest you recompile libinput with debug info and do not strip the binaries to obtain better backtraces.
Well, that's a different problem. libinput has several soname bumps because of API and ABI incompatibility. You have to rebuild swc against the newest libinput. (Although I'm not sure if swc developer updated the code to new API)
    Edit 2:
Just to tack this on here for `gnome-session --session=gnome-wayland --debug`
I'm not expert on this, it may be related to libinput problem. If you don't include GDK_BACKEND=wayland environment variable when launching gnome-wayland.

  • LightDM-devel does not allow to change desktop environment

    Hi,
I'm new to Arch and I'm trying LightDM under systemd as my display manager. I don't know if this is the right place to ask about it, since it involves a package from AUR but if anyone can help me, I'll appreciate it.
I am currently using XFCE4 as my desktop environment. Since I need to switch user and language quite often, the current LightDM version available in pacman does not work for me since it has a bug that prevents it from reading the language selection correctly (https://bugs.launchpad.net/lightdm/+bug/1019314). Therefore, I'm trying the development version available in AUR which corrects the language problem but introduces a new one.
Because I am new to systemd and LightDM, I'm afraid I have ask the following newbie question. On the first time that I log in, I am able to select language and desktop environment but if I log out and try to log in again, I notice a few strange things. First of all I see that the user name is in bold letters, as if the user would be still logged in. I also notice that I am not longer able to change my desktop session or language, but if I select another user I am able to do it (unless of course, I have already logged in witht this second user, in which case the problem is the same). If I reboot or restart lightdm, I am able once again to select session and language but just like before, only once until next restart. Is this the normal behaviour of lightdm or should i report this as a bug?
Please, let me know if I'm omitting any important information regarding my system or configuration that may be responsible for this behaviour.

    Hello Liza,
    Did you try my solution?
[Re: Change source system name in variant in BWQ]
There are solutions to change variants properties, but that particular program has the logsys parameter not able to change, so you cannot change the value of that variant (only with debug).
It's best to go for that solution I already provided to you...

  • WM only or Desktop Environment?

I am planning on installing Arch on my main desktop and debating over whether I should use just a window manager like openbox or a desktop environment like gnome.
Is there any reason for using a desktop environment like gnome over just a window manager?
I know that they come with panels/docks/menus to make the system easier to use, but those things can be added as needed. Is there anything that Gnome/LXDE etc can do that Openbox cannot?

arctor wrote:Essentially... is a DE just something that strictly adds ease of use to the system or does it add extra functionality?
That's the thing: what constitutes "ease of use" typically varies from person to person.  As jasonwryan mentioned above, one person can find a DE incredibly easy to use, whereas another could just see it as needless bloat getting in the way of their workflow/hogging system resources.
It's kind of like comparing apples and oranges here; one isn't necessarily superior to the other (i.e. doesn't necessarily "add" or "subtract" anything), they're just different ways of working with your system.
If you really want something more "objective", though: a DE (as far as I understand it) is designed to create a more "desktop metaphor"-like workflow, whereas a plain WM is just that, a WM; it manages windows, and that's it.  You can mix and match components, though, to get an experience that can seem more or less like a DE, but without installing any of the big packages (e.g. you can use something like openbox as your WM and install xfce4-panel by itself to provide a menu/window list area, without installing Xfce proper).

  • KDE Trinity desktop environment installation problem

I had Arch running very well with xfce4. I installed trinity kdemod3-complete as described in wiki. On starting there is blank blue screen with dialog boxes (one after the other) stating that that 'kstartconfig not found- check your installation' and 'kdeinit not found, check your installation'. After that it comes back to login screen.
I removed slim login manager to get command line at start. On starting /opt/kde3/bin/startkde, there are error messages: libpng14.so.14 not found. I have libpng 1.5.10-1 installed.
I checked in wiki, there is no reference to this. Please help.
    Edit:
I copied libpng15.so.15 to libpng14.so.14.  The trinity started and the desktop has appeared. But only text is visible, there are no icons, even in toolbars like that of konqueror. Also repeated messages of missing libs are coming. I am not sure what to do.

I guess Trinity desktop environment is not being supported by most in Archlinux.
If I have to remove these packages (which are now unnecessary) will following command work all right?
    sudo pacman -Rs kdemod3-complete
I am asking this because it involves a very large number of packages (a full desktop environment) and I hope it does not break my system which is working well at this time.

  • Rox Desktop Environment

    Hi All
For those of you who may not know, the rox file manager can be pretty much ran as a smallish desktop environment.
I have started putting together a little repo that has rox and some of it's useful counterparts.  More will be added over the weekend.  Please let me know of any rox parts you would like to see in the repo.
Add this to pacman.conf to access the repo
    [rox]
    Server = http://www.foxjames.co.uk/linux/rox
Follow it with pacman -Sy of course.
The few packages in the repo so far are
archive - archive handler for rox-filer
edit - text editor based on rox
mplayer-rox - rox wrapper for mplayer
oroborox - window manager for rox
ripper - cd ripper for rox
    rox - rox filer obviously
    rox-lib - rox libraries
rox-mime - rox mime type editor
rox-session - rox-session manager (if you use a ~.xinitrc back it up first)
roxterm - a lightweight terminal for rox
videothumbnail - video thumbnail viewer for rox
I would recommend installing all the packages that are there so far.  Running rox-session will create a .xinitrc to run the rox-desktop, you will be asked which window manager you would like to use.  I typed in oroborox, you can use openbox or any other wm you like.
Like I say it is incomplete, and probably will break, (considering I have never even made a package for AUR yet).  Feedback would be nice on improvements etc etc.
    Enjoy

I didn't know abour desktop2app, so I wrote my own script for conversions, with a -a option to process all your system-wide .desktop files. It mostly uses messy heuristics based on own my partial understanding of freedesktop.org conventions, but still seems to work alright.
Run it with -h to see its options.

  • [SOLVED] XFCE4 Desktop not displaying properly.

    Hello,
I've just recently installed Arch on my laptop, and installed XFCE4 as my Desktop Environment. When I start the machine and login, I enter
    startxfce4
When XFCE starts,  the background flickers terribly and I can just make out the little mouse in the back. Then the screen goes black. The cursor is enabled and I can use it but there's nothing to click on. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace doesn't work.
    startx
works, and I can start XFCE from within and it shows up normally. However, when I move my cursor from the console of X to the desktop on XFCE it begins flickering again and the output on the X console is
    (xfce4-settings-helper:911): xfce4-settings-helper-WARNING **: Failed to get the _NET_NUMBER_OF_DESKTOPS property.
xfce4-panel-Message: no valid position defined: (null)
xfdesktop: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_datalist_get_data

xfdesktop: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_datalist_get_data
    xfdesktop[919] starting up
Then it finally gives up and xfce shuts down.
I've googled and browsed the forums until my eyes hurt and I can't find a solution for my specific problem.
Any help is much appreciated. Thank you for reading.

I don't know if it matters now, but I'd like to post my solution in case anyone else comes across this problem.
You were pretty much correct Tyo. I did pacman -Syu before and after the installation of xfce, but my problem was after the installation there was a file at /etc/profile.d/locale.sh that was causing a conflict and not allowing the system to update at all. I never noticed it and when it went back to the cursor so fast I automatically assumed everything was up to date and it had nothing to do. I removed the locale.sh file, ran pacman -Syu, and everything updated as it should and xfce works flawlessly now.
Well, you know what they say about assuming...
    Thanks a lot guys.
