Cannot startup from Tiger installer DVD or any other CD

When I try to startup from a system CD , DVD, or Diskwarrior CD the system folders on the external media will not mount.

I have yet to see an Apple update that is responsible for an OS X installer not booting a computer.  The installer discs are self contained with their own bootable system.  It is independent of what may be installed on the hard drive.
I've been involved in beta testing Tiger updates as well as several security updates for Panther.  I have not run into a "bad Apple Update" problem.  It is possible to get a bad download, however, but that's not a problem with the updates themselves.
Just because other users experience similar problems does not always mean the problem is with OS X or OS X updates.  Many times the problem is with poorly maintained or corrupted systems that are not repaired before updates are applied.  Inexperienced users are frequently their own worst enemy.  Also keep in mind that for every user posting a problem on the Discussions, there are thousands having no problems whatsoever.

  • Cannot startup from Tiger installer DVD

I am not able to restart from the OS 10.4 DVD. After several seconds of spinning with the apple on the screen I get a circle with a line through it and the spinning just continues

simply mac wont start up from usb devices... u need
an external firewire device to be able to boot...
Okay, that helps me. My device will do firewire, I'll just have to find the correct cable.
While I'm here, lemme explain my situation.
Recently, my father purchased an iMac with OS 9.2 preloaded on it for me (I'm mainly a windows user, but I've used an OS X machine at school so I'm fairly comfortable with Mac, and I'm adapting to OS 9). After tinkering for a while, I came to the conclusion that in order to make full use of my Mac, I'd probably want to upgrade to OS X. So my father went and purchased a copy of OS X from owcomputing.com (I'm thinking it's preowned as the seal was previously cut and taped together).
As all disks are DVDs, and iMacs have a CD-ROM drive, I connected a USB DVD drive to it and atempted to install. I have a black disk, reads "Mac OS X Tiger CPU Drop In DVD" and mentions "This software is part of a hardware bundle--not to be sold seperately" (it was bundeled with software, but not hardware. So perhaps that may be a problem). When I click the restart button from the installer it tells me it could not set to start from that disk.
As besous here has said, that probably means it just doesn't like the USB connection, I'll seek a means to make it firewire. In the meantime, it's mentioned in this thread that the grey software discs may or may not work for me as they did not come with my Mac originally. They read "eMac Software Install and Restore" Discs 1 & 2. This once again suggests the CDs were bundeled with a Mac previously and now is being sold separately as that's entirely the wrong model of Mac.
ALAS, those grey discs also read they're "Mac OS version 10.3.3". The black one says "Mac OS version 10.4". Does this mean I can disregard the two greys as they're for the wrong model of Mac and for a lesser version? And I should be okay to install off the black disk once I hook up the firewire cord for my external DVD drive correct?

  • Cannot boot from Tiger retail DVD on my G3 iMac

I just got a G3 iMAC 500MHz DV SE slot loading, it has 256+512 MB of Memory and 60 GB Hard disk. Firmware is 4.1.9
When I first got the machine it didn't have an OS so I loaded Tiger on it, with no problems. after a couple of restarts I started getting Kernel Panic right at power up. First it was every now and then but it became consistent later.
So as a solution I thought maybe zapping the PRAM would help (That was a mistake). After Zapping the PRAM I could not load into Tiger at all not from the retail DVD nor the Tiger installed on the HDD. What happens: the computer starts to load you can hear the DVD working it goes into the grey screen with the spinning gear and then eventually the greay apple is replaced with a circle and line across it.
I tried everything, resetting the PMU, zapping the PRAM again, replacing the battery to no avail.
So finally I installed OS 9.2 back, and that was vey smooth, I erased the HDD and did a clean install of OS 9.2, did the update to 9.2.2. Then I tried again with the Tiger DVD, same thing it starts to boot from it and then it stops at the same place.
What is driving me nuts is that I installed Tiger on the same machine from the same DVD 3 days ago, it only stopped working after I zapped the PRAM. What the heck!!!
Any advice would be appreciated, right now I am running 9.2.2 on it no problems...
    Thanks..

Since your firmware is up to date, your problem is probably bad RAM. Often RAM that works fine with OS 9 will cause problems with OSX. Try with just the original Apple RAM (it will be slow, but OSX should still run). If it works, you may be able to test one of those lifetime RAM warrantees.
Have you run the Extended test from the Apple Hardware Test disk? It doesn't find all errors, but if it says something is bad, believe it.

Phil0124:  Sorry, I guess that I may not have communicated clearly initially.  The reason that I asked about the DVD reading capability in the first place is that I would like to be able to watch a movie "stand-alone" (like on an airplane) on my iPad without having an internet connection.  If VUDU is strickly a streaming service that wouldn't satisfy my needs after all.  After looking into the iTunes store offerings, I can see that I can either purchase a movie or rent one from them.  Either way, as I understand it, the content would then reside in a file in the iTunes folder in my computer (if rented, this would just be temporarily) and could be viewed on my computer and/or transferred to my iPad for viewing.  Considering the legal question, isn't there a copy being made and transferred into my possession.  So,what's up with that?
Yes Vudu streams. iTunes does not. If you buy or rent a movie on your computer through the iTunes store, then you are legally entitled to transfer that movie to your digital device as long as that device is under the Same Apple ID used to download it to the computer, and is authorized to view the content. Usually this is the case if your device is synced with iTunes on the computer  This is legal and covered by the terms of use of the iTunes store.
If your rent a movie on your computer you can also transfer it to your iPad but it will be removed from the computer as rentals can only exist in one place at a time. When the rental period expires the movie will be automatically removed from your computer or device, wherever it is when the rental period expires.
If you buy a movie on your iPad these can be transferred to your computer using the Transfer Purchases button on iTunes on your computer while the iPad is connected to it.   Rentals on iPads or other mobile device cannot be transferred and must be watched in the iPad or device that download them.
All of these methods through the iTunes store download the complete movie to the device or computer, so no internet connection is required for watching at a later date.
Rentals have a 30 day life as long as they haven't begun to be watched.  Once the movie has been started then it has a 48 hour expiry period. That is you must finish watching the rented movei within 48 hours of rental as after that it is removed from the device.  You can watch it as many times as you want in that period of time though.

  • Can't restore from Disk Utility while booted from OS installation DVD

    I'm absolutely astounded by this.
I have a new MacBook Pro 17". I restored my files to it and in short order, had it too full/fragmented to re-partition it for Boot Camp.
So I decided to image the disk and store that image file on a FireWire drive, wipe the system disk and restore it cleanly from the image file backup, hoping that would result in contiguous blocks used so that I could then re-partition for Boot Camp.
When booted off the OS X for Intel DVD-ROM disc (10.4.6 - the one that came with my MacBook Pro), if I get out of Installer and into Disk Utility, if I select the internal hard drive and click the Restore tab, I can easily select the hard drive backup image with the button. But the "Destination Disk:" box is only accessible via dragging the disk to the box.
There's one little problem - there is no Desktop, so the disk(s) do not appear on the Desktop. There is no way to drag the target disk to be restored to into the Destination Disk: box. You cannot drag a disk out from the little sidebar inside the Disk Utility window over to the Destination box. I tried. You can't drag any disk anywhere from that sidebar. It's clear that the only way to drag a disk anywhere is if it's shown on the Desktop in Finder (which isn't running when the installation DVD-ROM is booted from). There is simply no way that I can find to restore a disk drive from a saved backup disk image when booted from the installation DVD-ROM.
Please tell me I'm ******** and missing something, or if there's a Better Way to do this. (I can't seem to run Retrospect while booted off the DVD-ROM, so I can't restore from my Retrospect full backup of the disk, either. Joy!)
(I'm really curious if there's a Better Way - especially because it appears I can't boot from an external FireWire or USB 2.0 drive, so I need something that will work in this extremely limited installation DVD-ROM booted environment, I think.)
MacBook Pro 17" dual 2.16 GHz ;   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Booted from Mac OS X for Intel 10.4.6 installation DVD-ROM

You can use an external bootable drive with a MacBook Pro -- check your manual or the built in help. Your problem is that for some reason, you can't install a bootable system on one. There are several reasons why Installer won't enable you to do so: insufficient space, incompatible partition scheme (should be GUID) or file system (should be HFS+ or similar), or wrong installation option selected.
It is possible this is related to why you can't drag the startup volume to the destination box in Disk Utility. It must be an HFS+ variant file system.
I think you should check carefully with D.U. the partition scheme of all your drives & the file system format of all the volumes involved. Also run repair disk, as someone has already pointed out.
The behavior with the Restore function is not normal -- you should be able to drag a volume to the destination box from the list.

  • Why can't I open my retail Tiger installation dvd although it boots

    Hi,
I have problems with opening my original Tiger installation dvd. I already installed Tiger, but I need some data from the optional installs on the disk. But I don't get any access to the dvd. Its shown on the desk but whenever I try to open it it just failed. I can boot it by pushing C and starting from the dvd but I have no access when I just put it into my internal diskdrive. Does anyone have an idea?

  • Kernel panic when booting from Tiger install DVD

Short version: When I try to boot up from the Tiger installation DVD, my Power Mac G5 gives me a kernel panic. Can anyone help?
    Here's the story:
I have a Power Mac G5 that I've been running Leopard on for quite some time now. Unfortunately, the software I need to use (Final Cut Studio 1) has some incompatibilities with Leopard, so I was thinking I would put Tiger back on the machine in a separate partition on the second hard drive.
I tried booting the Power Mac using the retail (black label) Tiger DVD and holding down the "C" key. The Apple logo appears on screen, but is immediately followed by a kernel panic. I'm never able to access the features on the disc. The same thing happens if I try holding down "option" during boot instead: I'm correctly allowed to choose whether to boot from the hard drive or the DVD, but once I choose the DVD, I get the Apple logo and then a kernel panic.
The same Tiger DVD works fine on other computers, so I know it's not the disc. And the Power Mac itself handles everything else without problem.
I'm kind of desperate, as I need to finish this project this week. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated!

  • I can call from Branch through Gatekeeper to CUCM. But cannot call from CUCM through Gatekeeper to any Branche.

    Hello All,
I can Call from any Branch office to CUCM through Gatekeeper. But I cannot call from CUCM through Gatekeeper to any Branch.
    My CUCM version is 9.1.2
    Regards
    Bahlul

Do you see anything shw up on the debugs on the branch router?
Check debug h225 asn1 to see if there is a setup coming from the CUCM. If not, that means the CUCM is not receiving the IP address of the branch gateway from the GK. This could mean a config issue on the GK with respect to the branch gateways, or on the UCM.
Take debug gatekeeper main 10 from the gatekeeper. These debugs will show what's happening on the GK while processing the incoming ARQ from CUCM.
Also please upload the config of the GK, branch gateway here.

Yet Network control panel says I am connect to the modem, and Network Diagnosis says I am connected to the Internet. It's like the blind man who has eyes that cannot see. BTW, I am not some newbee. I have been a Machead since the early nineties and set up a half dozen networks, including the one I am using at home to which the iMac mysteriously is there but not. This has me stumped! • Clean install Tiger 10.4.8 from another installation DVD

    Hello,
I'm preparing my PowerBook G4 for sale. I've decided to do a clean installation of OS X. I understand that I should boot from the backup installation DVD that came with the PB, then do the installation. Unfortunately, I bought the PB just after Tiger came out, so the backup contains a Panther installation. As the PB was delivered with a Tiger upgrade DVD, I would then have to upgrade Panther so that the purchaser has Tiger.
As my girlfriend just bought a MacBook Pro, I'm wondering whether I could use her backup installation DVD to install OS X 10.4.8 directly? Can I?
    Thanks
    Richard

    Hi Richard;
first off there is no such things as a clean install of OS X. The terminology of clean install comes from OS 9 and has never been officially used for OS X.
There are three ways to install, Upgrade, Archive & Install and Erase & Install. Upgrade assumes you have OS X already on the system so that it can be upgraded. A&I copies the old version of OS X to a folder called Previous System and installs a new copy of OS X. E&I does just that it erases the disk first then installs.
If you have a PowerBook and she has a MacBook, it technically impossible to use her install media because her is Intel based and your hardware is PPC based. No go.
Besides that it is illegal anyway. The install media with MacBook is a single license installation for the MacBook.

  • Can't boot Tiger installation DVD

    I can't install tiger on a power mac G5 1.6 GHz from 10.3.9
because the installation DVD won't boot in any ways (automatic
asked from installer and manually with C command).
    Is there a solution ?
    Thanks

Also sometimes the 'C' key does not work for booting. Sometimes it is necessary to use the Startup Manager:

Be sure to take these precautions before installation:

  • Cannot startup from disk

I have a disk error on my HD, but I cannot get the machine to startup from the Tiger Install disk or the Techtool Deluxe disk. I have tried (repeatedly...) holding the 'C' key down on startup, but no luck. I went to the Genius Bar today, and the technician helped my fix another problem, and told me that on intel Macs, you have to hold down the 'D' key. Still no luck.
Am I doing something wrong, or do I have another problem?

The D key is held if you want to run hardware test from the DVD. You hold down the C key to boot from the DVD drive. Try booting and holding down the opton key. This will let you see what all drives are bootable. It should show the DVD drive as a boot option with the install disk in.

  • Trouble booting from Leopard installation DVD

I'm having some trouble booting from the Leopard installation DVD, I was wondering if anyone here could help.
I want to reset my administrator password since OS X does not seem to be accepting it, and I heard that the best way to do this would be to boot from a Mac OS X installation DVD or CD and change some settings. When I start up my computer with the Leopard DVD in the drive, I hold down the 'C' key after the chime, and continue to hold it until the spinning gear appears.
From there, the spinning gear stays on the screen, and nothing happens. I've heard that it takes a while for the screen to come up, but I let it sit for over three hours and nothing happened. I also tried holding the Option key at startup and selecting the DVD, but the same thing happened. The DVD is in good shape and has no deep scratches, and it appears right away in the OS itself. I can't access the installer from the OS since it asks for my Administrator password, which it does not seem to be accepting. I also tried another solution to the Administrator password problem that involved typing some commands in Single User mode, but that did not help either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

what exactly did you try to do in single user mode?

  • Powerbook 15" won't restart from Tiger install DVD

    Hi,
I am trying to start up my powerbook from the Tiger install DVD in order to use the repair disk function of Disk Utility on my hard disk. I tried both rebooting while pressing the C key, as well as selecting the DVD from Startup Disk in System Preferences. In both, the outcome is the same:
I get the grey screen with the Apple, then it turns into a blue background on which there is a white window, which shows a very strange graphic. There are two complicated looking components to this graphic. The left one looks like a grey oval shape with complicated looking lines on it, and what looks like two batteries falling out of it. The numeral "1" is under this graphic. The right hand shape is also a grey oval with various lines on it, and contains a blinking red dot. The numeral "2" is under this graphic.
There is a greyed out arrow next to the "2".
At this point, the keyboard or the mouse do not work. There is a spinning circle under the graphic, and it keeps spinning while nothing further happens.
I have no idea what these graphics mean, and google has not revealed anything. Please help!
    Thanks

Update: I have figured out from further googling that the weird graphics are pictures of wireless mice and how to install batteries on them (?!). I have never owned a wireless mouse and certainly one has never been used on this computer. The current system on the powerbook is 10.4.9, and the install DVD for Tiger is 10.4. Is it too old to boot this machine? Is there some other way I can run the disk utility instead?

  • Cannot boot from Leopard Install DVD

Now that I know I have to archive and install (based on a previous post), I'm trying to boot off of my Leopard Install DVD. I put it in the drive when starting up, hold down "C", and nothing happens. I end up booting from the hard drive and getting stuck again. I reboot the computer, try again, and again, nothing. Finally, I pressed "option" on boot-up, got the boot menu, the DVD appeared after a moment, and I clicked on it. I could hear the drive spin-up, then nothing happened. It went to the hard drive again and got stuck in its reboot loop.
The drive should be fine, as I've been using it for normal purposes lately (including ripping music off of my CDs yesterday). Is there any other reason that an OS X Leopard Install DVD wouldn't boot properly? Is it the DVD itself? Or might there be another reason?
    Thank you,
    Joel

If you are missing the discs that came with the machine, and you bought the machine from an authorized service center contact AppleCare for replacement discs at a nominal fee.
Otherwise contact the seller, who should have given you the discs when he sold you the machine.
