Cannot startup my Macbook

Hello all!
I am having trouble starting up my 2 year old Macbook. While using it, it went into sleep mode as appropriate. Then I treied to use it and it became non-responsive so I forced shut it down. Since then I cannot startup the Macbook. Everytime it is turned on it gets stuck on the grey screen with the apple in the background and the circular timer. Then after about 2 mins it shuts down automatically. I have tried many things. Start just from the battery, just from power cord with battery out. I have reset the PRAM. I loaded from the OS X disc and ran hardware and hardisk utilities and they found no problems.
I don't know if this is helpful but when I listen to the harddrive closely when it is at the grey screen, the sound is repetitive like it is stuck???
What are my options from here?? I do have a large amount of data I would like to not lose on the HD. Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the Apple Discussions.
I suggest backing up your HD before doing anything else since you do have a lot of info in there. If you have another apple computer, do a target disk mode (connect both computers via firewire and turn on the macbook while holding the T key). This will allow you browse the contents of your HD on the other computer and do a backup. If that is not an option, then boot your computer from the install disk and do an Archive and Install make sure you preserve user and network settings. This will reinstall the OS without erasing any of your personal files. Good luck.

What may have happened is an error and a kernel panic, filling up the logfiles.
What I recommend is first to find a way to backup your data without booting the hard drive directly if it isn't already backed up, and then get Alsoft Disk Warrior to repair the hard drive.    You'll probably want an external drive from http://www.macsales.com/
And you'll want to go into Hard drive -> Library -> Logs, System -> Library -> Logs, and Users -> yourname -> Library -> Logs to remove whatever you find there.
If after booting it fills up again, start by removing all startup items in your System Preferences for your user, and rebooting in safe mode with the shift key held down. If the hard drive is over 85% full after removing the logfiles, you may want to look at what were the last applications you installed.
Peer2peer software if installed can be as bad as a virus, because it enables others to access your computer. Insecure wireless networks are just as bad, if they are WEP or no encryption and someone is within 1500 feet of your computer.
If no such software is installed, your RAM probably has failed.    Run the hardware test that came with your computer, by booting with the 'D' key.
If nothing shows up there, it can still be the RAM.   Especially if you've seen any 4 language screens telling you to restart.

  • TS1367 I cannot start my Macbook Pro!

As the title says, I cannot start my Macbook Pro.
I turned the Macbook on, I heard the startup chime, but stays grey and all I see is the spinning wheel (the one that indicates something is loading).
What can I do for it?  Thanks in advance.

Do a safe boot pressing Shift key. If you can, boot in recovery with Command and R keys and reinstall 10.7

  • Help: Cannot startup, not even with system discs

My MacBook (Intel, 10.4.11, no peripherals attached) cannot startup.
If I press the power button (either without pressing any other key, or press and hold 'shift', 'command-v', or 'command-s'):
    - there is a regular startup chime
    - a blank grey screen shows
    - I hear repeating faint clicks from inside the MacBook
    - no further progress from there on (waited 10 minutes)
If I press power button and quickly insert the Mac OS X system disc (either without pressing any other key, or press and hold 'c', or 'd'):
    - there is a regular startup chime
    - the disc spins up
    - a grey screen shows a blinking file folder with a question mark
    - no further progress from there on (waited 3 minutes)
I have tried the following without success:
    - make sure RAM and hard drive are properly seated by taking them out and putting them in again.
    - reset SMC
The last thing I was doing before this problem:
    - I left the MacBook while it was burning a data DVD using Toast
    - When I came back 2 hours later, the bottom part of screen shows a gear wheel spinning. I also saw a progress bar with Toast. I cannot eject the DVD or get any response by pressing any key including force quit keys.
    - I pressed the power button to force shut down.
    - I pressed the power button to start up. I held the trackpad button and the DVD ejected but did not start up from there on.
    - I cannot start up the MacBook since then.

The HD is so messed up that it messes with normal booting.
Your best bet other than Apple Service is to disconnect the HD ribbon cable, insert the Install disk, hold Option key down on startup, select DVD to boot from, after it boots, recoonect the ribbon cable to the HD, then "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

  • HT1338 cannot connect my MacBook Air to a projector  -does not detect and 2nd monitor. I have a new Mini port to VGA cable made by apple. When I read online I see that many people have the same problem - Is this an Apple defect??????????????????

I cannot connect my MacBook Air to a projector - It will not detect a 2nd monitor or display. I am using an Apple made Mini Display port to VGA adapter. As I read online I see that many other peple are having the same problem. Is this an Apple defect!!???? If so it just burst the bubble about how great macs are. I never had a problem with that on a PC. I hope I am wrong. What can you tell me?

    Hi There,
I have had the exact same issue but with a projector.
The issue lies with Mountian Lion 10.8.2.
I tried many a combination with no luck to get HDMI working.
Took my mac into the apple store and came to the conclusion it was the software, so I asked them to install 10.8 onto it (this is destructive so a backup is a must)
Bought my macbook home and voila, now displaying through my projector.
There is a small graphics update after 10.8.1 which seems to be the cause.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

encore keeps crashing on startup on macbook pro. I have all the latest cc and osx updates

What specific OS and Encore versions? Since you say "latest OS updates," I assume Mavericks, and is this the relatively new 10.9.1 version?
Where in the startup does it crash? Is there an error message?
Mavericks causes a variety of issues, and we don't have enough data to really pin them down. At least with the original Mavericks, some users appeared to get CS6 to run with some serious but workable problems.

    Try resetting the printing system:

  • I cannot get my Macbook Pro retina to connect to my BT Home hub.

    Hi,
I cannot get my Macbook Pro Retina to connect to my BT homehub either wirelessly or through ethernet using the thunderbolt adaptor.  I know that this is a problem with my IP address as in Network Settings it tells me that
'Thunderbolt Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet.'
I know that my internet connection is fine as I can plug the ethernet cable back into my PC and it works fine.  Also, my phone and ipad connect wirelessly just fine.
Bt have told me to contact Apple, but I can't get hold of Apple till tomorrow.
Amyone know how to overcome this?
I did also find my IP address and enter it manually, at which point netwrok settings showed my ethernet connection as green and connected, but it still wasn't working.
    Thanks

Same for wifi.  I have put in my IP address manually for the wifi network and it has gone green and connects to the hub, but gives me an exclamation mark on the wifi bar and still doesnt connect to the internet.
I am writing this whilst connected to the internet on the same laptop but connected to BTFON which is a really slow public network I have access to as a BT customer.

You should be able to reset the password to your Mac with the OS X Snow Leopard install disc. The first article below will walk you through that. If after you have logged in and you get that constant alert for your keychain login, then second article will sort you out with fixing that alert.

marcoHi. Read the weblogi startServer script, and the startWLS script it calls. These
scripts build up a string which is added to the java commandline that starts
the server, with an argument -classpath ....... Unless the driver shows up there,
    the server doesn't see it.
However, we already include a version of the oracle thin driver. It may not be
the best (it's old), so you will want to make sure you version gets in to the classpath
argument ahead of our stuff, but the old driver would have been invoked...
Therefore, I suspect your URL is not exactly correct. Please verify that this exact URL
works in a simple standalone JDBC program using the driver you want, without any
    weblogic code in the picture.
    thanks,
    Joe

  • I cannot open My MacBook pro

i cannot open my macbook pro. It only loads halfway and stays there

If you don't already have a current backup of all data, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If the machine is connected to the network via Ethernet, disconnect the cable.
If it's connected via Wi-Fi, try to start up in Recovery mode. Select
              Turn Wi-Fi Off
from the Wi-Fi menu in the menu bar.
Try again to restart as usual. While disconnected from the network, you won't be able to log in to a network account on an Open Directory or Active Directory server, but you may be able to log in to an account local to the machine. Post your results.

I cannot get my macbook to see my new apple
    usb superdrive

The newest version Apple USB SuperDrive is restricted in usefulness
to those computer models that did not ship with internal optical drives.
Is your situation similar to one cited here(?)
•USB SuperDrive not working as a secondary optical drive...
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/20797883#20797883
While it has been said the firmware is such to disallow use of these
Apple USB superdrives w/ Mac computers an internal optical drive.
The iFixit.com site had a suggestion about that, so it may not be
totally true. However any changes to the USB SuperDrive may void
a warranty if you mess it up, or tamper with its design...
    •Apple USB SuperDrive  Repair - iFixit.com:

...note second answer in first question, affirmative

this idea uses Terminal to change how its seen...
A better answer is to get another brand that works as a superdrive
for Macs and can also read/write media, boot system discs, and
more than a few are good too, if you travel and need to change
the region code to watch DVDs. Less costly, more disposable.
Third party models work as external optical drive when OEM failed.
LG, LaCie, & other USB external superdrives had been said to work.
PS: you could also consider the iFixit page on repairing the original

So there are a few possible answers.
Perhaps more than one may work.
