Cannot stream RENTALS from Mac to apple TV via Homesharing

Hi,
very odd problem here since a couple of weeks. I have a Apple TV 3rd Gen. which I use to stream content from my Mac via Homesharing. Everything works well (I can stream music, images, movie-long HD podcasts) besides I want to stream a rental video. I can browse through the library, select a movie as normal but when I fire it off to play it takes forever to start playing. I was waiting for minutes but the movie does not start. On the other hand I can stream the rental flawlessly the other way round, from my Mac to my Apple TV. It takes just seconds to start.
I cannot really work out when the issue appeared but it surfaced a few weeks ago.
Any idea how to solve this?
Thanks,
Tom

You can do this either from the music app on the iPad or from the remote app, it's quite simple and intuitive. Once you get the iPad it should be quite apparent how it works. If you aren't sure at that time post back.

  • Stream content from Mac to Apple TV via iPad

I'm setting up a music centre in my home theatre room for all my old records as well as digital music. All the digital music will be controlled by my iPad (yet to purchase) through my Apple TV and to my sound system.
Though I don't want to store all the music on my iPad, as my music collection is constantly growing, I can't justify the purchase of a 64GB iPad, and I'd rather have all my music on just one device.
What I'd like to do is stream my music from my Macbook Pro, through my Apple TV, to my sound system, but controlled from my iPad. This way my Macbook Pro can stay docked in my office, yet I still have access to play the music on my sound system without having to walk back and forth from the office.
Does anyone know what the process might be to set something like this up, if possible?
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    - Matt

  • Streaming rentals from mac to ATV - possible?

    Hi,
I've recently purchased the new 2nd gen Apple TV. I have to say it's great for streaming content from out three macs to watch/listen on the TV. However, last night we tried to rent out "How to Train Your Dragon", and have been met with the "it will take X hours and XX minutes" before it is ready to play. We're on a 6Mbps connection, with average download speeds of c. 4Mbps (tested on several sites).
We let the movie download overnight, which it did, and I hit play to see if it would start, which it did. I then paused it, as my fiance was in the shower, and when she joined me, the **** thing has started to download all over again. So we're in for another 4-8 hour wait (depending on what ATV is telling us). And our 48 hour watch period has now been activated! I'll definitely be asking for a refund on this rental.
Now, what I wanted to ask is, would it be possible to rent a movie on one of our macs and then stream the rental to the Apple TV? Has anybody tested this to see if it would work?
The only other option I see, other than renting things hours in advance and praying that they will actually have finished in time (and actually play), is to download the SD versions instead. Does anyone know if there is very diminished quality when watching the SD versions on a 32" LCD TV?
    Thanks for your help!

On my 32" I can't tell the difference between SD and HD. On my 42" I can't tell a little bit of a difference. If I had a larger TV the difference would be more appairent.
    Rule of thumb:
The larger the TV the more you need HD.
it also depends if you are sitting too close, too far away or the correct distance from the TV.
many either sit far too close or too far away.
on my 32" (before i upgraded it), it was very apparent the difference between SD and HD (on both appletv and broadcast TV). On my new 40" it is much the same (although the panel on this new TV is far superior than then 32").

  • Purchased a movie on my iPad, transferred to Mac, and can't stream it from Mac to Apple TV

I'm currently running into the infamous "Authorization is required. To play this content on your Apple TV, choose Authorize This Computer from the Store menu in iTunes on your computer, then enter the Apple ID and password used for the purchase." error.
This is a well known error, and has caused problems for people in the past. It seems the last time it was prevalent, Apple was having a server outage.
    Here's what's happening:
    - I purchased an HD movie on my iPad
    - I can send this movie to the Apple TV via AirPlay with no problems at all
    - I can do a "Transfer purchases" to put the movie into iTunes on my Mac, and it plays perfectly on my Mac
    - If I try to play the movie through "Computers" on the Apple TV, I get the above error.
    - I can also stream the movie from the Mac to my iPad using the iPad's "Videos" app and Home Sharing
I've tried putting it on two different Macs, and I get the same issue. Other content requiring authorization (digital downloads, and a single SD movie I purchased from iTunes) work just fine.
Any thoughts? This is a brand new Apple TV, brand new iPad, and both Macs are running the latest version of iTunes.

TRy to close itunes by double tapping the home button then slide up all of the open apps and try again.
another option is to turn off your ipad, logout from your itunes account and try again downloading the movie. If it still gives you error, call apple support and ask for itunes agent to see if there is something wrong with the movie you are trying to download

  • Cannot stream movies from itunes to apple tv 1st generation

    Hi,
I have an apple tv 1st generation and whenever I'm renting movies I would like to play them via streaming on my TV. Unfortunately I have to wait until it's fully downloaded and then I have to transfer them to the Apple tv.
Can someone tell me if there is a way to be able to stream rented movies from Itunes to the apple TV without having to wait until it's fully downloaded?
I'm using a macbook pro with mac OS X 10.6.8.
Any help would be so much appreciated.
    Thank you.

If you rent via your Mac then you have to wait until it's full loaded. If you would like to stream then rent directly on the Apple TV

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X can't write in NTFS disks. If you want to write in NTFS drives, you have to use a third-party app like Paragon for NTFS, being this application the best one to write in those disks.
Another option is to format the external disk in FAT32 or exFAT on a PC, so you will be able to read and write in Macs and PCs without having to use third-party apps. Do it on a PC and copy the files of your external drive to the internal disk first

  • Cannot stream photos from iPad, cannot stream audio from Pandora

Updated to iOS 4.2.1 and I can stream audio from the iPod app on the iPad to the ATV2, so I know AirPlay is working. But, I cannot stream photos (there is no AirPlay icon showing on top of the screen, unlike the video demo from Apple.com web site). Also, cannot stream audio from Pandora (again, no AirPlay icon).
The odd thing is that I can stream Pandora audio from the iPhone 4. But, not photos (same problem as with the iPad).
Is anybody able to stream photos from either iPad or iPhone? How about Pandora audio from the iPad?

Apparently what is happening, and this was brought up in another thread, and what I suspected was happening as well, is that the iPhone/iPad/iPod touch is not streaming the video itself directly to the AppleTV (it might be streaming it if it's audio only, haven't confirmed). What it's apparently doing is, is telling the AppleTV2 to download the video and play it on its own, starting with xx:xx timestamp directly from youtube or your iTunes library. This is why it's only working with your iTunes library or the built-in YouTube app. And also why it wouldn't work with the camera roll, because it isn't streaming directly from the iPhone. So it's not exactly what we were originally thinking or expecting.

  • I need to stream video from itunes to apple tv with out using my 40gb hd.

i need to stream video from itunes to apple tv with out using my 40gb apple tv can it be done you see i have a 40gb apple tv and it's full and i still have lots more video (movies) in my itunes can i stream movies from itunes to apple tv with my memory full in apple tv??????????

Select the iTunes library on your computer from the Sources menu in Apple TV and then you can stream. If streaming is not smooth and your router has a multicast setting, try increasing the multicast bit rate. To return to the synced content on your Apple TV, select the Apple TV logo at the top of the Sources menu.

I changed my wireless broadband to a landline-base DSL wifi and it works like a charm. Sun was the culprit even you fiddle with its router and disable firewall, it won't work.
try changing yours too and let me know how it goes.

  • Transfer home movies from mac to Apple TV

How do you transfer home movies from mac to Apple TV

You need to add them to iTunes.
How you do this depends on how you make the home movies.

  • How to play youtube from MAC to apple tv

How do I play youtube from MAC to apple tv?

In short, you cant. Older macs dont support airplay to apple tv's due to hardware restrictions. To do so you need a mac thats around mid 2011 or newer.
However goolge Airparrot as there is a $10 app that you can purchase that enables compatabilty with older macs. I have never used it, and there are some performance issues on older machines. It will eat your processor performance and some macs may have choppy video results.
As a note the reason only newer macs are airplay compatible is because their GPU's have onboard H.264 encoding capabilties that airplay uses, whereas older macs dont so using airparrot relies on the processor to do the encoding.

  • How can I get an itunes movie from macbook to apple tv via airplay, how can I get an itunes movie from macbook to apple tv via airplay

how can I get an itunes movie from macbook to apple tv via airplay?

You don't use Airplay.  You set up Home Sharing on both and under the Computers section of AppleTV you'll then find it under Movies (or Rentals if rented), assuming it's in a compatible format.

so far my only options is to get an app to use upnp to get the music directly from my nas
or get some app which require the computer to be running and running some program to handle it
and as far as I can tell getting access to stuff synced on the atv is a no go

  • Streaming video from mac to mac and from mac to Apple tv

I just purchased a iMac i7 with Snow Leaopard. Until now I were able to stream video from my MAC to Apple TV and to my other MAC wirelessly.
From my new iMac I cannot stream. Not to Apple TV (via iTunes) or from MAC to MAC.
A bit annoying when it worked fine before I got new hardware and soft ware.
Network is through a Timecapsule. I can still stream video (720p) from my Powerbook to my Macbook Pro (Leopard).
This be a iTunes 9.1 issue also.
Anyone else had this kind of problems.

Some people forget that AppleTVs do not appear automatically in new iTunes libraries, especially if they originally configured it once a long time ago for another library.
