Cannot successfully upgrade Blackberry 9700 OS from within any VM

Here is a rather convoluted description of a problem that I have submitted to Apple as a bug report, as well, but I figured I might as well post it here. I posted this on a Snow Leopard forum and someone there suggested I cross post it here, as well. Maybe someone else has had the same issue, and/or perhaps Apple will pick up on it.
I, along with several other Fusion VM users, and even the VMware people themselves, have discovered a likely bug in the Mac OS when trying to upgrade the RIM Blackberry OS on a Blackberry 9700 from within Windows XP, using a Fusion VM. This does not happen with the Blackberry 9000, only with a 9700. (Another Fusion user has noted the same problem with other BBs which also use a micro-USB cable, as does the 9700, but not those which use a mini-USB cable, like the 9000. I have no idea if this problem is related to the micro-USB or just the different OS on the BBs with the micro-USB.)
The same problem exists for me with a separate Fusion VM on my 2007 Macbook, which has OS 10.6.3 as well.
I have also tested this using a Parallels VM on the iMac, and the same problem occurs in trying to upgrade the BB OS--it acts exactly the same way in Parallels as it does from within Fusion.
There is /no/ problem with the same 9700 and same micro-USB cable upgrading the BB OS on my old Dell Windows XP laptop.
I have /not/ yet created a Boot Camp partition on the iMac and tested it that way.
The problem is that the USB connection with the BB doesn't seem to be stable when connecting from either the Fusion or the Parallels VM to the Mac USB. VMware says it uses standard Blackberry USB drivers in its VM. In any case, when trying to upgrade a BB OS, during the process the initial USB connection is normally lost when the BB is partially "wiped," then regained when the BB tries to boot up in the "wiped" state to prepare itself to load in the new OS. This is when the USB connection fails with the BB 9700 but not with the BB 9000. (The VMs are set to automatically connect the BB to the VM.)
The USB connection is also lost (in the 9700 only, but not with the 9000) when using another BB Windows utility, the Blackberry Swiss Army Knife (BBSAK). After doing a file backup of the BB using the BBSAK, the USB connection is lost, and the USB plug has to be pulled and then reinserted in order to do any subsequent operation with BBSAK.
I'm trying to make the case that this is a compatibility problem of some sort between some Blackberrys, all Windows VMs, and the Mac OS, that is, involving the USB communication between the VM and the Mac OS. I doubt the problem is with the BB or in the BB OS itself, or in the Mac hardware, but I suppose it could be any of these things.
One answer, of course, is to simply use the RIM Blackberry Desktop software for the Mac, which does work fine with the 9700. The problem with that is that the RIM Desktop software for the Mac is limited in what it can do compared to the Windows software for the BB.

It's probably not something Apple would be concerned about as it's dealing with Fusion, Parallels, Windows and Blackberries...none of which are Apple products.

    Some comments:
The VMware (Fusion) people have been very much involved, and at this point, considering that the problem seems to be identical in Parallels, VMware, too, thinks this is an interface problem of some sort with the Mac USB ports or SL drivers. They are probably going to submit their own bug report to Apple.
That said, I may take your advice and cross post it to a Windows forum.

  • Yosemite: can no longer rename files from within any apps?

mavericks (and earlier versions of os x) allowed renaming filenames from within any app.
this cannot be done in yosemite; is this correct (anyone please confirm)? or is this still a mac os x feature that got turned off during my updating somehow?
if no longer available, is there a workaround to this extremely useful workflow tool?

    bump.
    anyone?

I cannot get my blackberry to e-mail pictures any longer...I get a red X everytime I try. How can I fix this problem?

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
Anytime random strange behaviors creep in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
If that does not fix it, then please return to these forums (http://supportforums.blackberry.com/rim/) and register an account so that we can provide you with direct assistance.

  • CFCONTENT from within any AJAX layout

CFCONTENT does not work as documented when I call it from
within my AJAX app. Workarounds that call the code from another
directory are way too kludgey for the client, but proved my
standard code works outside of AJAX layout areas.
This problem was first mentioned here in January '07 but
never answered. Has anyone found a workaround?

    > Thanks and apologies... I should have just said
    "CFCONTENT does not work when
    > called from within any AJAX container," for example
    CFDIV, CFWINDOW,
    > CFLAYOUTAREA.
    > [...]
    > The result is exactly as tSpark described... I see the
    HTML table
    > in a standard browser window, it does not launch and
    display in Excel. The same
    > code works as expected (and as I've used it repeatedly
for at least 4 or 5
    > years) if it is in a non-AJAX page.
Right. Well I think you might be misunderstanding how all
    this works.
Firstly, here's a very small replicable case:
    <!--- mimeTypeTestMain.cfm --->
    <cfwindow initshow="true" source="./mimeTypeTestInner.cfm"
    />
    <!--- mimeTypeTestInner.cfm --->
    <cfcontent type="application/msexcel" reset="true">
    <cfheader name="Content-Disposition"
    value="filename=mimeTypeTestInner.xls">
    <table border="1">
    <tr><td>Foo</td></tr>
    <tr><td>Bar</td></tr>
    </table>
As you say, this just displays an HTML table in the window.
Now, first things first, the <cfcontent> tag is indeed
    doing its job
exactly as intended. If you watch the underlying HTTP
    requests/responses
taking place, you'll see the MIME type of
    mimeTypeTestInner.cfm is indeed
being set to application/excel, and the content-disposition
    is being set to
    the correct file name.
However that sort of thing is only ever interpretted by the
    browser as
starts receiving a new response from a request it itself has
    made (you
know, typing in a URL in the address bar, or clicking on a
    link or
sumbitting a form on the referring page, etc.
A <cfwindow> is *not* a "window" in the sense of a
    browser window (or a
browser frame or iframe), it's just a <div> with some
    styling applied to it
to make it look "window-y". Part of the <cfwindow> tags
    functionality is
that behind the scenes, a Javascript XML object is making a
    request back to
the server to get the content for the window as specified in
    the "source"
attribute. Having received some data back, some client side
    JS (which
<cfwindow> has previously sent down to the browser)
    grabs it and pops it
into the innerHtml of the <div>. It doesn't pay any
    attention to your
headers. It doesn't actually make any sense it pay any
    attention to header
information like that, because the content of the request is
    being
integrated into an existing doc, which already has a name and
    a MIME type.
    Make sense?
I've singled out <cfwindow> here because I happen to be
    getting myself up
to speed with CF8 at present, and <cfwindow> was one of
    those tags I have
never used in production code: so it's kind of "on my radar"
    at present.
The other AJAX-esque tags will work the same way, for the
    same reasons
    though.

  • Cannot connect to the iTune Store from within iTunes.

Can not connect to the iTunes Store from within the iTunes program on my PC. Using iTunes 10.4 on a XP Sp3 system. Everything worked fine until a few days ago. Now the iTunes Store (Store) will not open. • How do I successfully upgrade my iPhoto Library from 7.1.5 to 9.5.1

I've been running iPhoto on my MacBook for the past 6 years. I've accumulated a library of 280GB of photos. I had iPhoto '08 v 7.1.5 (387). Recently, I got a new Mac running Mavericks and iPhoto 9.5.1. Using the Migration Assistant, I copied my library over to the new Macbook Pro, along with all my other files. I opened iPhoto on the new mac, and it showed a completely empty library. A 'du' from the command line (as well as Info in Finder) of the iPhoto library showed it had 280GB of space taken up, so the files were copied over correctly. Running 'find . -print | xargs md5 | sort' on both libraries before before trying to run the new iPhoto produced identical checksum on all the files (I wiped the new mac, reinstalled Mavericks and migrated again before running this on the new library).
I've also tried copying the old library to an external hard disk, same results (on file systems formatted to ignore case as well as those formatted to respect case, in all cases it was a MacOS Extended partition).
I've also tried creating a new library on the old mac, putting 2 photos in it, editing those photos (to flip and crop them). I copied it over to the new Mac (volume formatted as Mac OS Extended, ignore case, journalled), verified that I was using the proper path to this new library and that the files were identical. Same result.
Over the past two months I've tried everything I could find. One thread said I needed a migration program from such an old version of iPhoto for the Mac, so I tried downloading that from this forum, but it told me I didn't need it when I ran it.
I've tried dragging individual folders of the Originals and Modified directories over. That got my photos transferred, but the events were all messed up and the assiciation between the Original and Modified photos was lost. Since I have 43,995 photos, 23747 of which have been modified, I don't find this to be an acceptable migration path.
I tried posting this to another thread on failure of iPhoto to upgrade properly to Mavericks, but was requested to post a new thread due to protocol in these forums, so here is the new thread after making an admittedly snarky comment that Apple totally dropped the ball on this upgrade path and that it totally doesn't work. It should be this hard for a clueful computer professional with 30 years of experience to get it right.
    Yours In Frustration.

There's actually an option to iPhoto Library Manager that makes this all almost work flawlessly (and work well enough for me). With the exception of Photo Albums that the pictures are part of, if you select "Library > Rebuild Library..." and then select "Scavange Orphaned Photos" check box, then it will put all the Photos and Movies into the "Scavanged Photos" album. It matches the modified pictures to their originals. It preserves all the event names and photo groupings. All the meta-data I could spot check it got right (although with 44k pictures, I only checked a few). If you fail to select this option, however, it will find no pictures at all when it goes to rebuild the library (this was true of the small test libraries I tried as well as the big, monster 280GB library I just finished converting). The conversion process took 5 hours to run, but in the end produced a library my new iPhoto can read and that I can interact with. I'll be suggesting to the iPhoto Library Manager folks a notation that would estimate the number of Orphaned Photos and display that number as a hint to the user that the option would be useful.
Edited: Thanks to Old Toad and LarryHN for their help in finding which of the many options to transition this library to 9.5.1 I needed to use. Sorry if I took my frustration of the past several months out on you guys for generously trying to help me.

  • Notification of successful deployment to production server from within

How can code running on a production server be notified that a successful deployment (of new/changed catalogs) has completed to that server? A side affect is the catalog schema switches from CATA to CATB or vice versa. Another way to phrase the question is how to be notified of catalog schema switches at the time they occur?
    Thanks.

That URL hangs but I think I found the spot in the Programmer's Guide. It talks about a DeploymentManager but only vaguely.
I found some code that uses the DeploymentEvent and DeploymentEventListener mechanism. You register your listener with the DeploymentAgent (via config) and then receive all the deployment events. The only question is which of the many events/states that are reported is the one that means the catalog data source has switched?

  • Cannot execute Microsoft HTML Help file from within Eclipse managed app.

I took an easy solution and created a help system for a large Java application using the Microsoft HTML Help Workshop as the IDE. The Help System does exactly what the client wants, but when I tried to integrate it into the application I ran into a brick wall.
I wrote a very small Java app to see if I could execute the compiled help file (RAS_Help.chm) under the simplest circumstances. The code, which runs fine under VJ++ throws the following exception when run from Eclipse
    e: java.io.IOException: CreateProcess: RAS_Help.chm error=193

I assume the problem is in launching .chm files, since if I change the program I want to execute from the RAS_Help.chm file to the Windows Solitare game (sol.exe) the program works like a charm with no errors thrown.
Can anyone give me some guidence on this? If it is impossible to run the HTML Help file I created, I'd be ammenable to redoing it in some other package, if that would guarentee my being able to use it in the client's large application.

  • Yosemite finder spinning beachball when opening or saving files from within any open application ... fix please!

At my wits end with this issue, it seemed to have started with the 10.10.1 upgrade and continues with 10.10.2. Only when you are in an open application (it’s fine if I am looking at files on the desktop) and go to open or save a file the pop up window opens and then seems to open again and as I try to navigate through the files it pauses and I get a spinning beach ball for 15 seconds to a minute each time. Then the ball is gone for a few seconds and comes back again … eventually I can get to a file but it can take several minutes to get to one file through this process. The delays seem to get worse the more I try it. I have been dealing with a senior CPU adviser from Apple for the last four weeks on this issue and the conclusion after all of our testing and a half dozen data logs is that the engineers are continuing to collect information on the problem from others and will hopefully identify and fix it some time but can’t offer any further advise. As of now I am forced to run 10.8.5 (without any finder issues) on a second partition in order to do any meaningful work. I have a mid 2010 27” iMac with 16Gb ram and a 3TB fusion HD. Here’s what I have done so far to try and fix this:
    - went through all of the cleaning and maintenance items using the OnyX utility program including;
fixing permissions, running all maintenance scripts, rebuilding system databases and deleting the system, user, internet and fonts cache.
    - running Disk Utility repair and permissions.
    - used Disk Warrior to rebuild and optimize the disk
    - tried turning off Spotlight and iCloud.
    - started up in safe mode
    - zapped the PRAM and reset the SMC
    - used terminal to delete Finder settings and disable auto-mount of network shares
    - reinstalled a combo update of 10.2.2
    - tried different user accounts
    - did a fresh install of 10.2.2. on a second partition (the problem was still duplicated here)
I have to say I am disappointed of late with what seems  to be a lot of bugs coming out from the latest Apple software releases. Am I going to have to live with this setup and just wait for Apple to hopefully identify this as a bug and offer a fix sometime in the future?  … can anyone offer any further advise?

  • Cannot open iwork documents from within the iwork program

I am running OSX Mountain Lion on an imac 3.06 GHz core duo. Everything is uptodate. I have documents from Numbers, Pages and Keynote stored on icloud. I can see them when I go to icloud.com. When I try to open them from within any of the iwork programs, all I can see is greyed out document icons.

    Hello
It seems that Pages is coded to save an imported file (which is the case for a .doc one) in the folder from which it was imported.
When the folder belongs to a CD, this can't be done and Pages refuses to import the doc.
    I's not a bug, it's a feature.
Delberate or not is an other question.
If this feature is annoying from your point of you, described the problem to the official channel because here we are users trying to help other users.
We are not members of the Pages team.
So, *go to "Provide Numbers Feedback" in the "Pages" menu* and describe what you wish.

  • How to edit GRUB boot options from within Arch.

    Hello!
I'm having a problem with scanlines (both in X and tty), and I think that the solution is the vga= boot option.  I, however cannot edit the GRUB boot options from within GRUB, because the commands go off my screen (overscan.)
I was wondering if there is a way to edit the default GRUB options from withing Arch.  I have GRUB on /dev/sdb0 and chainload with the windows bootloader, it it matters.
    Thanks,
    wesleyac.

    Thanks.
I cannot seem to figure out how the steps here translate to grub.cfg settings.  If you could explain this to me or point me to somewhere that does, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks!  I actually ran into a page that mentioned grub.cfg, but at the top of my grub.cfg, there's a big warning saing not to edit it.  Should I ignore that?

Upgrading to Mountain Lion from Snow Leopard, I cannot tell if it was successful. Where is the downloading indicator?

Does it show up in your purchases in the App Store?
If you have successfully downloaded Mountain Lion it will be in your Applications folder "Install OS X.app"
