Cannot sync my IPhone without being tethered to my computer/Itunes

I have done all the updates and have the latest Itunes (10.5.2.11) and latest operating system (IOS5) and ICloud, on my IPhone (3G). It worked for a while; all I would have to do is get my phone close to the computer and it would sync. Now, it doesn't do that. I have to attach it to my computer with a USB cable in order to get it to sync. I have looked through the boards and have found similar situations but the solutions offered haven't worked.
Also, when it does sync (while tethered) it won't sync new contacts I've entered into my IPhone with Outlook. It WILL sync a new calendar appointment from my IPhone to Outlook, but not a new contact. Anyone know why?
Any help would be appreciated....

Thanks for your response. I did what you suggested for Issue 1. I can now sync wirelessly, but I still have to open ITunes and click the "Sync" button to get it to start. It used to be that Itunes would automatically open and sync when I got my phone anywhere near my computer. I'd like to get to that point again. Any further suggestions?

BACKUP to computer
Restoring to factory settings
Restore from backup

That fixed mine. I have a sneaking suspicion it has something to do with pulling out from USB without ejecting for itunes/USB bus. Just like on any USB drive, open files will leave a mark behind if not closed properly. Honestly I have no idea why it does it.

The music sync is one way - computer to iphone. The only exception is itunes purchases. File>Transfer Purchases
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion. Use your backup copy to move everything to your new computer.

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.

Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

I have been able to do so the past and with the recent upgrades I am unable to do so now.
I went to iTunes as usual to the iPhone option on the right and the iCal sync option is no longer available. They Apple leave this out accidentally with the new upgrades. I hope they add it back really soon. I rely on this sync. I have appointment that I cannot overlap.

The ability to sync your iPhone using iTunes has been removed in Mavericks. You are expected to use iCloud, which will give you the same syncing functionality and will happen automatically without your having to plug it in.

Same problem here with my 3GS
I noticed that my Capacity meter at the bottom of itunes when my iphone is plugged in only gave me 3 items; Audio, Video and Other. No Photos, Apps or Free. Then it was telling me I was over my capacity without even adding anything additional. So I followed the steps mentioned above.
Unable to delete itunes app, just step 6. No step 9 file in OS 10.7
also, using the "Go to Folder" method is a bit out of the way. Just follow the path by double clicking your HD. So much faster. Actually in OS 10.7 the only file you are able to delete is: /System/Library/Extensions - AppleMobileDevice.kext
Downloaded itunes app and installed with no restart and all is well again.

I ended up smashing my phone and could update all other stuff on restore but cant sync any music. It is all grey at the top of the screen. Ive re installed itunes and cleared all phone data. I'm having a similar problem. I had previously (over a year ago) purchased 2 episodes of Law & Order. Then about 2 months ago, I purchased the 3rd season of Sons of Anarchy. When I downloaded these episodes to my iPad, about a dozen full seasons of various shows popped up, too. No money was removed from my iTunes account & theses particular shows aren't in my iTunes library on my desktop. I've tried every which way to delete them from my ipad, but can't. If you are using a Windows based computer, try disabling a/v software and turning off the Firewall.
Disable antivirus software
Turn-Windows-Firewall-on-or-off
Then try syncing you iPhone.

I cannot sync my iphone to new itunes library.

I have the latest update of itunes on both computers and the latest software update on my iPhone 5s.
I have recently gotten a new laptop. I have downloaded itunes and transferred my itunes library from my old computer to my new laptop via home sharing. However, I could not sync any of the music to my iphone. I have also downloaded the transferred music from iCloud and backed up my iphone to the new laptop in the hope this would help. However it has not made a difference and I still cannot sync my iphone.
How am I able to solve this problem?

Only iTunes media will necessarily be erased. There's no way around this.

I upgraded to iTunes 10.5, and now when I plug in my iPhone 3gs i get the Beach Ball of Eternal Sadness. I have to Force Quit the app, and I cannot sync my iPhone. This also means I cannot upgrade to the new iOS5.

My OS is current and up to date. No problems there.... Intel based iMac, relatively new....
But since i did the upgrade to iTunes 10.5 i cannot sync my iPhone. It's a 3gs. Oddly - my wifes iPhone will load and sync (it is a first gen iPhone, btw).
Neither device is, or evr has been jailbroken. mY iPhone was syncing perfectly until the upgrade to 10.5.

Had the same thing happen to me when I tried syncing my iPhone this a.m. - talked to Apple 7 hours ago and evidently there's an "issue" with the iTunes server. The Apple adviser told me to try syncing in an hour. Well, rather than do that, I've continued to check Twitter, searching on "itunes sync" or "itunes server" - seems the problem's still going on.
I'm going to wait it out til tomorrow. Or whenever.
The REASON I was synching is that ever since the iOS 5 "upgrade" photos that were in albums synced from iPhoto had disappeared. Not all the photos, just all the photos in some albums. Weird.
Too many bugs in iOS 5 (syncing, Bluetooth connectivity, etc.). They should have waited til it was right before releasing it.
