Cannot transfer anything to iPod & cannot eject

This is all since upgrading to 10.4.
Essentially i was having problems backing up using the 'dotmac' Backup, whereby the backup process hung & I couldn't cancel the app or eject the ipod without crashing the finder which in turn wouldn't relaunch. Even system monitor wouldn't cancel the app.
I suspected the fault was the iPod (20gb - 3G)so ran the latest iPod software updater which told me to restore. After doing so(successfully)it wouldn't mount at all!
I then tried to examine it with Disk Utility which basically gave me loads of bad permissions etc. After repairing it i then had to mount it manually wth Disk Utility. Despite all this when it did mount and recognised by iTunes it will not transfer anything. Have tried it with hard disk use enabled & unenabled to no use. Have had error 36 & am examining the knowledgebase article on what the do with that. the best I get is that it starts the process of transferring but hangs on the first track. I also get a message saying one or more tracks can't be transferred before the trasnfer process begins, which I acknowledge; have even deleted the specific track mentioned, which was a 3g movie I made using Quick Time pro 6.5.1 (now updated) to test the video abilities of iTunes 4.9. iTunes also hangs and iPod won't eject via iTunes itself or the Finder, both of which hang and won't quit/relaunch.
I have to say until yesterday 10.4 ran fine since installed last week. Now I cannot transfer music or even use it as a hard disk as when I try simply to drag files across via the finder it gives me a message about the filenames being too long, even when some are less than 10 characters.
Upshot is I cannot backup to iPod as I have sone happliy for 1 year+ & cannot use to play music. I bought it last June so its not in warranty either.
having sat up to 2.30 am to try & fix this (& then had to get up @ 6.30 for work) I am exhausted.
I have probably repeated myself but wanted to get all info across so some genius could help.
Discussions have always been my saviour (more so than Apple support!) so i am hoping this will be true this time.
Someone heeeeelllllp!

Isaac,
While I never got my dual G5 to work properly using USB, I did isolate the problem.
After researching the issue, I purchased a firewire connector. When the iPod is connected to my dual G5 using a firewire connector, iTunes no longer complains with -36 errors.
Some users believe that if the USB bus has many devices connected to it, especially USB 1.0 and 1.1 devices, those devices will interfere with the transference of files on that. My dual G5 does have a number of devices connected to the USB bus and I cannot simply disconnect them, so I decided to use the firewire bus and have not had a single problem since.
Though I did not mention it in my earlier post, my iPod works perfectly with the USB bus on my 12" iBook, which only has one USB 1.1 device attached.
Good luck and report back if you find any new information.

  • HT1351 Whether or not I sync items on iTunes to my ipod, I cannot eject the ipod because a message keeps coming up and saying that my ipod cannot be ejected because it contains files that are being used by another application. How do I fix this?

I just got an ipod classic 7th generation a couple days ago and I'm having a heck of a time with it. My latest problem is that with media on iTunes, I cannot eject the ipod because it says that it cannot be ejected because it contains files that are being used by another application. What application is this, and what do I do about it?

    Hi newipoduser,
    Here are some possible solutions:
Do you use musicmatch jukebox on your computer? If you do, you have to go into task manager on windows and end process mim.exe. It interferes with disconnecting ext devices
    Empty your "trash/recycle bin."
If that doesn't work, try quitting all your programs, especially music-type programs, basically things that look for mp3's etc.
if that doesn't work, "log off" then "log on" and that should refresh/purge your OS system.
Finally, you can restart your computer.
    Hope one of these helps!
    Cheers,

I cannot eject my new ipod classic after sync with i-tunes on my pc due, it states, to open files being used by another application. What does this mean? How can I get my ipod to eject?

If it's a one-time "glitch," you can try restarting your computer with the iPod still connected.  Try ejecting again after the restart.
If the problem recurs, you may have a process running (other than iTunes) that is accessing the iPod's storage.  When connected, the iPod's "disk" is like other mounted volumes.  This process may be some type of utility that continously monitors your mounted volumes for security reasons, such as to prevent access by malware.
If you know of such a program that you have running in the background, there may be a setting to exclude your iPod's disk.

  • CANNOT EJECT IPOD NANO 4TH GEN

I cannot 'eject' my Ipod after sync because 'it contains files that are in use by other applications'. What do I do to safely eject?

Try a hard reset of it first.  See this article for instructions on resetting your iPod.

Once you have successfully rebooted it, try to eject it once again.

  • Ipod cannot eject. even with safely remove hardware.

I've had this problem ever since iTunes 7 was released. whenever I try to eject/update my iPod, I get an error saying "iPod cannot eject because it is in use by another program"
I've looked at programs that could be trying to acess it:
Outlook: not open, contacts not synced.
Antivirus: tried with *literally* three different programs, and with it all off. same thing
disk use: it's off, has been for the last 4 months.
I currently just shut down the computer, but the only problem is my iPod is now totally screwed over, and will not shut off, unless I use a speaker system's sleep function.
also, I know it is not adware/spyware/viruses, because we scan weekly, and we haven't had a problem for a year.
I have also tried it under every user account on this computer, and on numerous other computers. I have tried literally everything relevant in FAQs and such, and I STILL can't get it to work.
I've also managed to restore it a few times, and it has done nothing.

First of all, with your iPod connected, try resetting it. It may take several attempts. Also, try other usb ports on your computer.
Then, if that doesn't work look here.
iPod does not appear in iTunes.
Windows PC does not recognize the iPod is connected.

I finally stumbled across a fix for this problem, and in case someone else is frustrated at some point by a similar issue I'm posting what finally worked to enable me to bring iTunes up at any time (without rebooting first).
The solution was to go to the preferences to uncheck "search for shared libraries".
I'm glad the problem is fixed, but Apple developers really should include a timeout function on iTunes search for a shared libraries. At least a visual dialog to confirm that the application is in the process of searching for a shared library on the network would help provide clues as to what is causing the spinning beach ball to appear right about the time the application window should pop up.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer.  Use this to put eveything back.

  • Cannot eject ipod

I have a new ipod. After I put the music on that I wanted i clicked eject. The error message I receive is "cannot eject ipod because it contains material in use by another application"
Nothing else is open - I cannot figure this out. The only thing I can think if is that some of the songs came off another hard drive. Any clues?

This message appears often to me, too. When it happens, you could try playing a song in iTunes (even better if you play a song or video by clicking on the file itself, not by choosing it in the iTunes library). Another way is resetting your iPod (holding the central and menu buttons toghether) while still connected to your computer. • Can't Transfer ANYTHING from ITunes to IPod

just in the last week or so i've been unable to transfer anything from itunes to my ipod. this includes podcasts and purchased music. i have no idea what the problem is. the other night i left the two to sync for at least 10 hours and when i checked it the next morning it was barely halfway through the first import. i also try to eject my ipod and my comp freezes and im forced to turn off my comp and restart my frozen ipod. (it stays in the 'do not disconnect' stage) i am running itunes 6, but this problem just started recently. i havent been able to update my ipod or load any new podcasts in forever, please help!!

Okay, now I'm really unhappy. Since my last post a few days ago, I bit the bullet (really, I just needed the excuse) and bought a brand new 60 GB 5G video ipod. Connects via USB (annoying, but at least we are on completely different set of ports from the firewire), and guess what? THE EXACT SAME BEHAVIOR! All 8+ GB of my purchased music (and videos) does not transfer. The same error message about the iPod software being too old. This is truly ridiculous.
My machine checks out okay with Diskwarrior, I've run Applejack repeatedly to fix permissions, clear the caches, check preference files, etc., cleared the pram, and have reset the machine via open firmware. I'm exasperated to say the least. I've even de- and re-authorized the computer for the music store.
Now to add some complexity to this mess, my subscribed podcasts DO transfer over. Is this a DRM issue? Something about iTunes is wonky here. I'll keep poking around, but I'm having a very hard time with this being acknowledged as a problem. For many people, including me, this has been going on for several months.

  • Cannot eject disc from iMAC superdrive

When I insert a CD or DVD into my iMAC superdrive it is recognised and will play but then it is not displayed in the finder sidebar. consequently I cannot eject the disc. The only way to eject is to restart the machine.

    1. Click on Finder or your Desktop and with Finder on the Menu Bar open Finder Preferences. Next click on the Sidebar tab in Finder Preferences and make sure that (CDs, DVDs and iPods) is checked.
    2. Also check the General tab if you would like these things to also show up on your Desktop.
Lastly you should also be able to Eject CDs & DVDs using the Eject button on the Menu Bar.

  • I have inserted a EnVivo software cd into my cd drive and it has not been recognised and i cannot eject it. Can anyone help please.

I have inserted an Envivo software cd into my cd drive and it hasn't been recognised and now i cannot eject it. Would appreciate any help thanks

Now that we've established that you have the CD correctly imported into iTunes, we can move on from there.
Connect the iPod to iTunes. When it shows up as a Device (in the left window of iTunes) select it. You will be looking at the Summary tab (or pane).
On this pane, my choice is to have the option to Sync only ticked songs and videos selected. I recommend this option for you. This is relevant to the next step.
At the top of the pane select Music. On this pane, check the options for Syncing. You need to have Sync Music selected and then choose either Selected Playlists (which will only put your choice of Playlists onto your iPod) or Entire Music Library. If you select "Entire Music Library" then all your songs (one exception) will be transferred to your iPod.
The exception is: if you un-tick a song in your iTunes Library, then at the next Sync, it will be removed from the iPod but kept in your Library.
    Any luck?
