Cannot turn on WIFI on Thinkpad E420

Hi, I recently changed my windows from XP to 7. I usually use the LAN to access internet, but realised after switching to Windows7 I cannot turn on the wireless capability (this is what it says to do on troubleshooting). The F9 key doesn't work anymore, which used to do on xp and the window like the one on http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-Edge-Knowledge-Base/Is-there-a-wifi-switch-on-Thinkpad-E420-or-E520-Edge/ta-p/626145 doesn't appear anymore. All other keys like brightness and volume control work. Things I have already tried are:- 1.) Installed the latest drivers from the lenovo support for hotkeys integration and system interface.2.) Installed the proper WLAN drivers (It also shows the wireless networks symbol on the tray, but cannot discover any networks since the wifi isn't turned on). Plese help me.

Hello 606octranspo and welcome to community,
Kindly update the BIOS and reinstall Power Management software and ThinkPad Power Management Driver
BIOS Update Utility for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), XP
BIOS Update Bootable CD for Windows 7 (32-bit, 64-bit), XP
Restart the laptop and then press F9 key and check. Kindly check does the wireless lan card detect in device manager.
Best Regards,
Tanuj

What Apple says about this issue is that it happens "in rare instances"
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1559
What the heck Apple...can't you read a whole bunch of "Greyed Out" wifi problems posted in the communities and still you claim it happens in rare instances? This issue makes iPhone a dumb phone and not a smart phone anymore. If this issues is isolated, then not a hundred people should be experiencing this kind of problem. But no, I see lots of people with the same issue. And what does your Apple Care centers do, especially here in the Philippines? They say they cannot help those who beleived in Apple products and bought one. What these people can only say is that "sorry". The saddest part here is that, the problem in my iPhone 4S happened exactly a week after my warranty expired. Isn't that fun? This means iPhone hardwares only have a year of lifespan. #@$#%#@#$ after paying a huge amount of money, this is what Apple will give back to its customers. A bullcrap of aftersales experience.
I really hope Apple will look into this. After my experience, I am presonally campaigning my friends not to try Apple. Definitely Apple products are not money-worth.

  • Since doing the latest update i cannot turn on wifi.

Since doing the latest update i cannot turn on my wifi. The bar is grey and wont let me slide it to turn it on. ive restored my phone and it still isnt working. please help

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Cannot turn on WiFi

I have a MacBook Pro, OS v10.7.5.  It was just returned from Apple with a replaced harddrive. In reconfiguring it, I find that Wifi shows as an option under network, but it is turned off.  When I click on "turn on Wifi" nothing happens.  I have tried deleting the system configuration folder and restarting, but then wifi no longer shows in the list at all.  I am working in an office with multiple wifi spots available which I can connect to via my Iphone and Ipad. I am able to connect to the network via ethernet with the Macbook.
    Any suggestions?

  • TS1559 My wifi button on my 4s is dimmed and I cannot turn on wifi. I have reset network setting and connected to PC iTunes and got updated iOS software. Still doesn't work. Any suggestions?

My wifi button on my 4s is dim and I cannot connect to wifi. I have reset network connections and connected to PC iTunes and downloaded ios7.4. I restarted the phone and it still is not working. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem with my 4s too. Wifi is greyed out and won't switch on, plus Bluetooth doesn't work either. From what I can gather it's caused by either a broken or overheating WiFi chip. I'm planning to take mine to an Apple store to see if it can be repaired.

  • Cannot Turn On WiFi Even Though Adapter Is Working

Hi, Has anyone encountered the same problem and managed to solve it without using an external adapter? In Device Manager, I've ran the uninstall/install cycle in attempt to fix the issue and installed updated drivers. I don't have any conflicting VPN. The Bluetooth works fine but not the WiFi when I turn on the laptop WiFi button. Here are screenshots: Properties in Device Manager. But WiFi still cannot be turned on, as seen below. The switch always bounces back to 'Off'. Any advice is much appreciated!

  • I cannot turn on wifi after iOS update on my iphone 4s

I am experiencing the problem for two days. I followed all suggested steps and even restored my phone several times, didn't work out! The problems started as soon as I upgraded iOS.
I also tried to get help from live chat support and apparently I need to get it to service. However, since I purchesed my phone from US and now living in UK, I "should" send my phone to US to get the service which is basically impossible for me now.
I am not the only one who has this problem as seen from discussions and this is obviously an apple issue. I need urgent help!! There is no way for me to send my phone to US or go there either. And asking me such a thing by an international company like Apple is totally unacceptable!

  • TS1398 cannot turn on WiFi its stays off or what they say grey out.

I tried what online service says but still doesn't work. hard rebooting by pressing the menu and power button, reset all networks, even reset the ipad to manufacturing setup like new still doesnt work. I tried already bringing it to the store but service was Beeeeeeeeeep! I waited and waited like I see ten service guys and called genius area and no one want to help and I ask its been 45minutes since my appointment and I was told to reschedule me. anyone? :-(

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Unfortunately, there is another thread on this very topic, with 134 pages of complaints, suggestions, and comments.  Take a look at it, and maybe something there will help you. Good luck.

  • TS1559 I updated my 4S and now I cannot access my wifi due to a glitch in your software.  I have reset, and restored my phone numerous times and my wifi button is still greyed out.   Your phone tech blamed my phone and said it would cost $199 to replace.

I cannot turn my wifi on.  The button is greyed out.  This problem started after I update my software.  First tech I spoke to said it was my problem because I chose to update the software and since I was out of warrenty, I would have to pay $19.99 for service agreement before anyone would talk to me.  The next tech admitted this had happened to ssomeone else and stated it was a problem with my phone triggered by the software update, and because I was 57 days out of warrently, it would cost me $199 for replacement phone.   So basically, anyone that chooses to upgrade their software, risk messing up their access to wifi and have to pay the developer of the software to fix the problem, their program caused.  Does anyone have a clue how to fix this.  Why wasn't I informed of the risks that could occur if I updated my device.  I hNave reset, restored my device with no change.  I have even reset to original with all my data deleted.  Now what??

You are correct. This is a very bad hardware error of the WiFi Chip on the Logic Board. The Chip malfunctioned or was previously damaged, but the initialization error was not detected until you Update/Restore the iPhone recently. The Problem was there, just not detected yet. The repair or replacement of the WiFi Chip is very difficult. Because Apple does not repair iPhone 4S, they only replace iPhone 4S, it costs $199.

FYI, this is a user to user technical support forum.
No one from Apple monitors, reads, or responds here.
    Try the following:
Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network settings
If the Wi-Fi is still not working, basic troubleshooting from the Users Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
The vast majority of users upgrade with absolutely no issues.

  • Portege Z930: Loss of Fn keys after Win 8 upgrade - cannot turn WiFi on/off

After many months biding my time I have just embarked upon upgrading my Portege Z930-11G to Windows 8 Pro.
Largely this has gone to plan with the exception that after running the Toshiba Upgrade Assistant I've lost the Fn key display and about half the keys no longer seem to function at all.
The only key I ever used routinely is the Fn+F8 option to turn WiFi on/off.
So now I cannot enable the WiFi on the machine.
There must, surely, be a mean to do this but I can't find it. Does anyone have a suggestion? I'm OK for now as I have a wired LAN in the house but once I get out on the road I'm going to struggle without WiFi.
Before running the upgrade assistant the Fn key brought the key display up across the top of the screen and I surely wish I'd turned WiFi on at that point.
The Fn key utility offers very little control of the Fn keys. It does not offer the ability to do anything other than disable five on screen notifications for keyboard backlight, power plan, touch pad, cursor overlay and numeric overlay.
    All help gratefully received.
    Andrew

    > So now I cannot enable the WiFi on the machine.
First of all you can enable and disable the WiFi using function key but you can also enable the WLan in Windows 8 settings
    Win key + C -> Settings -> Change PC settings -> Wireless
Now you can use the wireless devices slider to enable or disable the WLan.
But to get the FN key working you have to install the +Toshiba Function Key Utility+ for Win 8 and +Toshiba System Driver+ for Win 8
