Cannot uninstall virus protection-- Invisible files?

My early 2008 MacBook Pro (10.6.8) has been running slow so I wanted to do a full virus scan. I see too many beach balls, scrolling pauses, and briefly my mouse buttons were misbehaving. It has 53 GB free on a */- 250 GB HD. Initially I had partitioned it, but ran out of space so I removed the second partition and now have just one big one.
I did a search for Sophos Antivirus, which has been on this machine since 2008 when I was staff/student. The search produced folders and files and then the search hung, so I quit it and restarted the machine, which generally is on all the time. I probably restart once a week to get rid of temporary files.
After this last restart, EVERY reference to Sophos has disappeared. No installer, no uninstaller, no virus definitions. I tried to run the Sophos home edition installer and it says there is antivirus software on the HD. I followed their directions, attempting to remove first Sophos 8 and then Sophos 9, and both return the message that there is no Sophos installed. But when I try to install the home edition, it says there already is virus protection installed. I had installed Clam, ran it with no errors or indication of a problem yesterday. Clam says to trash it in order to delete it, so I did. I haven't used any other antivirus besides Sophos and the more recent Clam. If there is virus protection, it must be invisible to me.
Since this MacBook is so old, I can't get help from Apple, and the Sophos directions indicate that I should download and run the uninstallers. So I'm stuck with a slow HD with no virus or malware protection. Disk Utility and TechTool (both run from the HD) indicate no problems.
The idea that the institutional version of the software uninstalled "by itself" baffles Sophos tech support as well as me.
Anybody have a directional idea? Thanks for considering this strange issue.

I ran the report but don't see the word "virus" in anything. I could uninstall VMWare since I've removed the Windows partition. The Samsung links are for my tablet. Perhaps something leaps out at you patient folks? Thanks for pursuing this with me.

  • Cannot view certificate protected PDF file on Windows Phone device

I have a certificate protected PDF file that I need to view on my Windows Phone 8.1 device. I can install the certificate on it without any problem, but when trying to open the file with the official latest version of Adobe Reader app, it says something like 'some features in this file is not supported in this version of Adobe Reader' and won't open the file at all.

  • Cannot open password protected .pdf files?

I have an ebook for school that requires a username/password combo to open. It of course opens on my computer, but when I try to open it on my Galaxy III, it says there was an error opening the document. It also will not open with my Galaxy Tab 7.0. I have the most updated versions on both devices.
Can I not open this type of file with Adobe Reader?
Please help!! I need to be able to open this ebook on the go!
    Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Michael for your speedy reply.  I have been reading on the Adobe site and I figured that much.  I buy knitting patterns and crochet patterns at a cost and I download and print them.  I 'save them to My Documents', some of the older ones I can bring up and print again but it has been just recently that the new ones will not allow me to view them.  I know you can get password breaker software.  Do you think it is a good practise to have such software in your computer? Thanks again.  JenonDenman.

  • I can no longer access a password protected Numbers file with the correct password. Error message only says the file "cannot be opened."

    I'm using Numbers version 3.2.2.
Suddenly I cannot access my password protected Numbers file with the correct password. I have the correct password written down so I know I haven't made a mistake.
The response box that pops up says that the file cannot be opened. There are no other options for me to choose from.

Also, I tried to open it through an older version of Numbers but it sent this error message.

the feature you are trying to use on a network resource that is unavailable. i cannot find Quick Time.msi file anywhere. so i cannot uninstall or re install quick time
    any suggestions please??????

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any QuickTime entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try installing QuickTime again. Does the install go through properly now?
(If you do find a clean download site for the correct version of CleanUp, please don't tell me where it is. Without wishing to sound paranoid (although I grant it does sound paranoid), there is a non-zero chance that posting links to download locations for the utility here at Discussions leads to that download location being shut down.)

  • Cannot upgrade iTunes because cannot uninstall itunes 9.0.2.25. Error: The installation source for this product is unavailable. The file c:/... itunes.msi is not a valid installation package for itunes.

I also get the error. "Cannot uninstall the older version of iTunes. Contact your technical support group."
How do I download the itunes.msi for iTunes 9.0.2.25 so that I can remove this phantom and unfunctioning program and then hopefully upgrade to the latest version of iTunes 10.5?
    Thanks for your ideas.

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

I cannot seem to edit PDF files on Adobe Acrobat as it says the files are protected and I need to enter a Permissions Password?

If the files have a permissions password, you need to know it, and remove security, before you can edit the files. That is correct.

  • Cannot password protect CSV file

I had a CSV file (workbook) that I password protected. Up until yesterday, I was prompted for a password to open this file, but this morning, I was not longer being prompted for a password. I tried opening the file in Excel 2013 and 2010 with the same result.
I tried to create a new CSV file (in both versions) and password protect the file (similarly to what I had done before) but the file did not retain the password protection.
Has anyone had problems password protecting a CSV file? Is there somewhere documented that .CSV files do not support password protection.
I am a little puzzled why it was working for several months, but now it is not.
    Thanks
    Andres

    Hi,
I agree with Mr. Hans, we cannot password-protect it from Excel. I suppose that your CSV file may be encrypted with some code/third-party program. Please see the sample below:
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/e2e21aa2-0e48-4188-a63f-085fecb55b71/csv-file-encryptiondecryption
    Hope it's helpful.

  • Since 31.0 update I cannot access Google or Facebook. I'm on a MAC and do not have firewalls or virus protection software

    I'm on a MAC OS X version 10.9.4
    Firefox browser version 31.0
I have no Firewall set up
I have no security software or virus protection software
Since my browser automatically updated to Firefox version 31.0 I cannot access:
    google. com or facebook.com
Also, when I type in a url into the address bar and then hit the <return> button the url I type (ex: google.com or facebook.com) disappears and the previous url in the address window pops up.
    Please help.

Can you try to start Firefox in Safe Mode to see if Firefox works properly with no error? You can start Firefox in Safe Mode below:
*'''Windows/Mac''': Go to Help > Restart with add-ons disabled
*'''Linux''': Run ''firefox -safe-mode'' in the Terminal/Konsole
If Firefox opens up fine with no problems, it's probably one of your extensions that's causing the issue. You can re-enable your add-ons one by one until you find the one that causes the issue upon being re-enabled.

  • Cannot find invisible files or folders any more

Find or Spotlight used to be able to find invisible or hidden files, folders, etc. This is key for some purposes.
Now it doesn't work. I can list hidden files or folders in terminal, but cannot find them at all using Spotlight, even when I know they are there. For example, searching for Name Contains private AND Visibility is Visible or Invisible returns nothing, even though ls -a returns private/ as one of the folders at root level.
Does anyone have an explanation for this change in behavior, or a fix? Using a utility like TinkerTool is not a satisfactory workaround, because searching still fails even when hidden files are shown in the finder.

    Hi, j.e.s.
First, we need to define hidden and invisible files, as they are distinct:
    • A hidden file is one whose file name begins with a period (.) . Example: a file named ".hidden" would not show up in Finder. This is a UNIX® standard.
    • An invisible file has its invisible file-system attribute enabled.
A file can be both hidden and invisible, e.g. its name begins with a period and its invisible file-system attribute enabled.
Now, as to searching for these with Spotlight:
    • By default, Spotlight neither indexes nor searches either hidden or invisible files.
    • The Find criterion for Visibility does not work. Find under Tiger is implemented in Spotlight. That the Visibility criterion does not work extends beyond the facts that Spotlight does not index hidden or invisible files nor will it search (with the exception of Raw Queries using criteria based solely on file system metadata) outside of its index. The function simply does not work. Even using a raw query to search for invisible files, when compared to using the Spotlight mdfind Terminal command, produces inconsistent results.
I have an entire appendix in the Tiger Edition of my book — from the info above is provided — that demonstrates all of these anomalies with Spotlight concerning searching for hidden and invisible files.
Your best bet for searching for hidden or invisible files under Tiger is to use EasyFind.
    Good luck!

  • I cannot uninstall or install updated version of iTunes due to "missing .msi file".

I have been having an issue with updating my iTunes for the past month or so, and it turns out my mom is having the same issue. Both of our iPods and iPads immdiatly updated to iTunes 10.7, however both of our computers come up with the same error message saying the iTunes.msi file cant be located. I also cannot uninstall for the same reason. This just started happening about a month ago. I dont understand what happened. When I got to documents however I can see the iTunes setup file right there! Help! Now neither of us can sync.

For those having this same problem, someone else on here had a solution that worked really well if you have Windows. They directed me to a site ---> http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
From there on the righthand side you'll see links indicated by reaccuring double arrows labeled Downloaded locations. Click one of them, proceed to download. Once completed go to Start> All Programs> Windows Install Clean Up.
Click it and find all iTunes files and remove them. After that restart your laptop or PC and then try and download iTunes 10.7 again. It worked out for me really well. (:
