Cannot unlock phone

I cannot get my phone to unlock after downloading an update. The computer said there was an error and had to restore my phone but when it did is asking for my old id and password which I don't remember and when I go to reset it I am not getting the email and it wont take my answers for security questions. Can't talk to support because my phone is locked. NEED HELP!

Now when I go to apple id trying to find my id just in case I have it wrong it doesn't find me at all. Frustrating

Try resetting it: hold on/off and home buttons simultaneously for 10-15 seconds until you see the Apple logo, release and wait for it to restart.

Now I cannot unlock it - it's like the touch screen does not exist at all.
Sometimes it works - but nothing seems to unlock it.
Then randomly, it will work again.

That's harsh, but looks like it is true!
I am having the exact same problem as everyone else here. Since upgrading to the iOS4.0.1 my phone has become incredibly slow and unresponsive. The touch screen will often lock/freeze not allowing you to answer calls. This would not be such a terrible thing if the "home" button could be configured as a back-up answer mode. I have missed several important phone calls as a result.
The 3G and 3GS were great phones. Maybe a few glitches here and there but at least you could answer the phone when a call came in!
Likewise, "Windows 97" was a great OS then Microsoft decided to make improvements and developed "Vista". Now Microsoft's towering kingdom is falling because they would never admit that they developed a flawed system. Now they have come out with Windows 7, but it's too late every one has given up and started moving to Mac.
Apple, beware that your pride and arrogance doesn't take you to the same fate. You need to offer some sort of customer support where we can inform you of issues like these. We should not have to pay to talk to a tech when it is a flaw in your software that is causing the problems.

These are the recommended troubleshooting steps to take when you are unable to Slide to Unlock:
If the device is unresponsive or if certain controls aren't working as expected, restart your device.
If the device remains unresponsive or does not turn on (or power on), reset your device.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, or the if the screen remains black or shows a persistent Apple logo, try restoring with iTunes:
Connect the device to your computer and open iTunes.
If the device appears in iTunes, select and click Restore on the Summary pane. Learn more about restoring iOS software.
If the device doesn't appear in iTunes, try to force the device into recovery mode, and then restore it.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact Apple.

He synched and now can't get back in. He was entering his passcode on the lock screen (which wasn't taking) and I noted to him that his screen didn't look like mine. Anyone know how to fix this issue, or does he have to do a full restore?

He has set up a complex password instead of a simple passcode for his phone. If he doesn't know what it is, he'll have to restore. There is no way around a forgotten passcode.

Connect to iTunes and try to reset it from there.

Once you get it going you need to make sure you do the following so that you can sell the phone.
Turn off imessage in settings/messages
Turn off Facetime in settings/Facetime
Delete icloud account in settings/ilcoud
Erase all data and settings in settings/general/reset
Delete the phone from your profile in https://supportprofile.apple.com

On final attempt to unlock phone, don't want my info wiped

I had a password to lock my phone, although at the time I created my blackberry account and linked my email last night it was not enabled. I created a different password to open my blackberry account. Then picked up the phone later and tried to unlock it. I used the password I thought I typed in to create my BB account but it didn't work. Does that password over ride any previous password. I have tried the original password, the password I used to encrypt my files and the BB account password. None of them worked. I got to the final attempt and saw that my info would be wiped if I failed. I had not had a chance to back up my contacts or any info on my phone yet. I was able to get into my blackberry account online with my password and was hoping plugging the phone into the computer would somehow trigger the phone to unlock. Why was I able to get onto my account online and not my phone. Will the computer and phone communicate without the phone being unlocked?

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
The password counter on the device is the same as from your PC when you connect them. Consequently, since you say that you've consumed all attempts, your BB has wiped itself clean of all personal information. But, you will need to explain further the highlighted text above...if you exhausted all of your attempts, the password lock configuration would as well have been cleared, and you should have no password challenge to unlock your BB now. So that is a bit conflicting...can you provide more detail about that?

As RG said, you cannot determine solely from the model number whether an iPhone is unlocked or not. In what country and from what dealer did you buy this iPhone?
