Cannot unzip files in lion

Hi my wife, on a macbook air 2011, and Lion cannot unzip some files, actually she can unzip, but they do not appear correctly when unzipped (PPTX), whereas on my macbookpro 2009 with snow leopard i can, anybody have any ideas on how this can be fixed, i don't want to have to do all the work for her, she receives many files.

ok, Mark, thanks, but i am not that stupid if i can open them in my macboopro....
she has office 2011.Anyway from the apple side it seems all is ok, this happened also on a windows computersomething about microsfot not being able to read its own crappy files, i can open them with Lotus symphony.
Thanks for all the help, it seems it is a microsoft problem (stupid company, why does anyone actually use their crap, nobody can tell me)

I recently upgraded to OS 10.9, and I'm trying to unzip folders I've downloaded. When I double-click on the zipped folder I get the usual uncompressing message, but the zipped files never appear.
Has anyone else encountered this problem and/or discovered a solution?

OK - I'm in Finder/Preferences and do not see the "Save Expanded Files" option on any of the tabs which are: General, Tags, Sidebarand Advanced.

I have to batch download files from TurnItIn several times a day and now can not seem to unzip them.

Unable to unzip files , unable to move apps into the app foldercant update

I cannot unzip files. Also if i try to install a new app by dragging it to the applications folder it says "that files already exists".
also if i try to update with software update it gives an error. i tried running verify disk permissions and repair disk permissions but this did nothing please help i am scared cuz my last time machine was along time ago.

A few clarification questions first.
What exactly does the dialog say when you try to drag a new app to the applications folder? Is it something like, "an older version of this already exists in this location, do you want to replace it with the version you are moving?"
And, what application are you attempting to use to unzip files?

Cannot unzip Oracle8i Enterprise edition

I am trying to download & install Oracle8i Enterprise; cannot unzip files - get WinZips error message "Cannot open file: it does not appear to be a valid archive. If you downloaded this file, try to download it again". I tried it di not work.

Just upgraded to Lion and cannot open files on my old SL partition - permissions error

I have just installed Lion on my 2008 MacPro on a new internal HD and cannot open word/text etc files on the original Snow Leopard disc. I get a permissions error. I can preview the file but not open it. When I do a get info, I can add my user and give it R&W permissions but still cannot open the file. I have a third disc with just videos and no system and this is OK.
For information my upgrade method was as follows:
     Install blank hard disc and fromat it.
     Clone original HD onto new drive using CCC
     Give it a new name
     Boot from the new clone and go through the lion install
     Update the new system to 10.7.4
     Repair disc permissions
Through this method, I have a duplicate set of files on the Lion partition and these I have no problem opening, it is just those on the SL disc.
Any ideas as to how to fix this. I did the duplication as I still want to be able to boot from SL for some old applications and hardware (a film scanner being one).

Well, I booted back into SL, and as I mentioned, I did have filesharing enabled. So I added the whole disc as shared and re-booted back into Lion.
Still no luck. I get exactly the same permissions error and cannot open any files. This seems crazy that from Lion I cannot open files on other bootable partitions.
I added myself as a RW permission on the disc via Get info and still cannot see the files. This is very strange behaviour. According to get info on the disc, I have full read/write access and on the file itself.
I can see all the files on non-bootable partions.

Pkg cannot install files in the Mountain Lion OS after Mavericks installation

I installed Mavericks on second partition while Mountain Lion was installed in first partition.
After 2 OS are ready and can be booted, I found any pkg cannot install files in the 10.8 OS, can I can solve it?

Sorry, I can't tell from your description what is going on. Are you allowed to choose the destination, or does it just install? Perhaps the package is poorly configured and has hard-coded install paths.
Do all installers have the same problem?
Unfortunately, I do not have a drive partitioned like that to test.

Cannot delete file on win7 after upgrading to Lion

After upgrading Lion OS X, I can not delete file on Lion partition from win 7. It always says "This file is too large...".
Also, My 2 HFS partition will not show on win 7. How to solve it?
I did upgrade BootCamp to 3.3

What your going to need to do is c boot and install OS X (10.6) from the disk, onto a blank external drive (format the drive first in Disk Utility: GUID OS X Extended (J))
Once 10.6 is installed, hold the option key and boot from the 10.6 external drive, go through setup with your same user name, and Software Update to 10.6.8
Then download and install DataRescue ($99) onto the external 10.6 drive and attach another blank external GUID OS X extended formatted drive and run DataRescue to recover your files to that drive. There will be a lot.
Data Rescue will read the 1's and 0's of the files themselves regardless of what your partition map says, before they are overwritten.
After that's done, access the second external drive and pick though the files to recover.
Once you have gotten all your data, you need to install all your third party programs on the external drive from original sources and update. Then move your files you've recovered to it.
Once that' is all done, erase one drive and download Winclone, and clone the Bootcamp Windows to the empty drive.
Then use Disk Utility to Erase with Zero the entire internal drive of all partitions and everything. (select the drive makers name and size on the far left) Format GUID OS x Extended Journaled like always.
Use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the 10.6.8 external drive to the internal drive, disconnect the external drive and boot from the internal drive and then install Lion on the internal drive. You can hold option key, click on Purchases to download Lion again.
Use Bootcamp to set up Windows partition, then follow Winclones directions to clone Windows back into the Bootcamp partition.

I already did twice, I think Firefox is terminating the download without any message. When I use IE it said your download has been terminated after downloading 700M out of 1.79G. I have absolutely no limits, the only thing I can suspect is the Oracle session is timing me out. I managed to re-establish the connection and resume the download, which I can't seem to be able to do with Firefox.

At first, my macbook couldn't start up. It only displayed apple logo with a spinning wheel on grey screen for hours and hours. Then I decided to reinstall the OS. I tried so many times to install but the installing time said thousands of hours remaining to complete . I left the computer for days but it didn't install OS. I tried that connecting the Ethernet cable as well but it didn't work. Then I took out all my important files by connecting it to another macbook and formatted the hard drive. Then tried to install OS again. But still didn't work. I checked on you tube and changed the hard drive cable as well. Still didn't work. I cannot install OS X Lion on my MacBook Pro. Installing time is in negative hours. (-2,147,483,648 hours). Seriously looking for help.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

Select
/var/log ▹ install.log
from the hierarchical list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List

Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

Spotlight and search field in Outlook on MacBoon cannot find files as of a certain date. What can be the problem and how to solve?

Reinstall on both.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

Restore your iPhone to reinstall iOS. Be sure to do this while connected to your computer and iTunes.
     Tap Settings > General > Reset > Erase all content and settings.

Where is IWEB domain file in lion time machine backup

I have read around and know how to locate the iweb domain file on my computer- apparently the library file is hidden and you need to press alt to unhide it.
But my problem is a bit different. I recently reformatted my system back to lion. I was going to use my time machine back up to restore but apparently its corrupt and I can only manually nagivate the files now. I'm trying to look for my iweb domain file while navigating the folders but cannot find it. I went to library and application support but there is no Iweb file there. This back up was done in lion, so I don't know where i can find this "hidden" library file.
I know its a hidden file because when i go to the library folder on my mac- HD>library> app support I don't find the iweb domain on my computer. Its only after i unhide it by pressing alt when i click on "go" do i get a library folder in which the iweb domain is housed.
I would really like to recover my website but dont know where to look on my timemachine backups.
Any help would be appreciated.

The default location for the domain file is your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. So go to that folder in Time Machine and see if you can see and recover the Domain.sites2 file.
Then make the Lion library visible as described below and open it with iWeb as described below:
In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
NOTE: If you repair disk permissions with Disk Utility on your boot drive you will have to rerun the script with Terminal to make the Library folder visible again.
For opening your domain file in Lion for the first time or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
Just launch the applicaiton, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.

Cannot duplicate files in finder

I recently ugraded to Lion, and am just realizing now that I cannot duplicate files (Command D) in the finder. The progress window shows the copy being made, but the duplicate file, which used to show up just under the original file as "file name copy" does not appear. When I do a spotlight search, the copied file is nowhere to be seen. Also tried doing an Option-drag-to-finder. That didn't work either. I was trying to make a copy of an image and then rename the new file to send to someone. I had to go through Preview, then Unlock the file and then save as another name. A ridiculously long process. Anyone have any ideas?

did you try selecting the item in the finder
press cmd + c
press cmd + v
presto, you have a dupe of the file that has it's name appended with the number 1.

Zip from OS Tiger yet cannot unZip without different OS Leopard

I have Tiger 10.4.11 installed with 1.4.2_18 Java.
I created a Zipped file using the Finder menu within the operating system. Now that I have the file it will not unZip without upgrading to Java 1.5 which requires Leopard. My hardware on both of my systems will not run Leopard.
Why can't the operating system that zipped the file unzip it?

I attempted to unZip using UnStuffIt but the file came up corrupted. I do not know whether this is truly corrupted this time or just the way StuffIt Expander describes a file it cannot unZip. I have seen that happen before many times.
I took the file that was Stuffed instead of Zipped and it came out half the original size once it was expanded using StuffIt Expander.
1024mb original file=>880mb stuffed=>660mb unstuffed
The same file Zipped using the Zip application built in OSX only compressed to 980mb.
A factor seems to be the 1gb size of the original file.
