Cannot update firmware on a brand new Airport Express

I just got a AirportExpress base station to extend the wireless range of my Airport Extreme (Gigabit Ethernet). I hooked everything up and configured my network. I ran the firmware update for the AExtreme and it worked. For some reason the same thing can't be done on the Airport Express. The updater just idles for a while and returns an error code (-6722).
How do I fix this.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

OK, you have proven to yourself that you are not losing speed over Ethernet.
Wireless is half science and half voodoo.
Sometimes, having a laptop very close to a wireless router will overload it, causing a drop in speed.
There may be a "hidden" network at a house near you, which is causing interference. This will not show up on most scanners
Could be a cordless phone in the area causing difficulty. Won't show on a most scanners.
Could be a wireless camera/security system at a house nearly causing some issues. Won't show on most scanners
Could be a USB3 hard drive doing the same
Could be a BlueTooth device.....wireless mouse, keyboard, headphones....doing the same
Could be gremlins.  I have them here at times.
You could try another Express.  Might be better, might be worse. Expect anything.

  • Brand New Airport Express-Green Light Wireless, Dead Green Wired

I just bought a brand-new airport express device. I have a cable modem connected to a dual band AirPort Extreme base station in my basement. My house is wired with Cat5 Ethernet cable. In a far bedroom, I am replacing an airport express-N (previous model) that was hard-wired to the Extreme. Always worked perfectly in extending and supplying 2.4ghz band wifi to that part of the house. I bought the brand-new AirPort Express to utilize the dual band bridge.
After many hours of trying, this new airport express will only work properly if I do not plug in the Ethernet cable. It seems to be performing well, but i was under the impression that an ethernet cable should be used to physically connect the AirPort devices each other.
Currently, in this wireless setup, I do have both bands available. I feel that if I used the cable, I would have much stronger better signal.
Interestingly, when I do ether-connect the airport devices together. My AirPort Utility looses all of my AirPort devices and shows (with a yellow dot) that my Internet (modem) is not available. At the same time, all of my AirPort devices continue to show a green light. I am unable to connect anything with any of my wireless devices.
Also, when everything seems to be working fine, my AirPort Utility does depict the wireless set up with a dashed line between the two AirPort devices representing that it is wireless connection.
With my last AirPort Express, a wireless set did extend the range, but only while slowing everything down. An ethernet cable, when introduced, made everything work perfectly, during which time the AirPort Utility depicted that setup with all solid line indicating wired connectivity.
I would appreciate any feedback from anyone who might be able to tell me why when I introducing ethernet to the new AirPort Express, it takes down the entire wireless network.
Hi, of course, try all of the normal troubleshooting suggestions. I recycled all devices I have rebooted everything.

It's always a good idea to do a complete power recycle when switching out network components ...
Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
o Power-off the modem, 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AEBSn, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."

  • Brand new Airport Express (base Station)

I have an Airport Extreme hooked to a cable modem. This is my base AP.
I have an old Airport Express hooked to my HiFi only doing iTunes
I have an old Airport Express as a WDS remote. (And tied to an Epson printer.)
I have a MB and MBP.
    Everything is great.
Now I plug in a brand new Airport Express with 802.11n. I ether set it up manually or via the Airport Utility 'manager'. No matter what I do it does not 'hook' up to my WiFi network. It is always flashing but I can never have it give me internet access.
BTW - I noticed that unlike the other boxes this one (AX-n) does not give the "Wireless Clients" graph in the log screen.

    Hello Albert,
Go to: Utilities/Airport Utility then when you setup your new airport express, on wireless tab, check "802.11n (802.11 b/g compatible) and it should work. If you check 802.11n and your network is in g mode, it won't work. I have a dual network, Time capsule, 2 MBP, 2 MB and airport express iTune on 802.11n and another airport extreme with 2 airport express on 802.11n(b/g compatible) for iphone use. Every thing work seamlessly.
    Good luck.

  • Updating Firmware on an older version Airport Express

Does anyone have an answer to updating the firmware of an older  version Airport Express. The new Airport utility 6.3.2 will not allow me to make changes to my Airport Express from 6 years back.

Apple has not updated the firmware on the older AirPort Express models in over 6 years, so chances are you already have the most recent firmware installed on your Express.
Apple has dropped support of the older AirPort Express models in AirPort Utility 6.x versions, so you will need to use a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC if you need to administer the older Express that you have.

  • Installing updated firmware to a newly purchased Airport Express

I recently purchased a new Airport Express and just got notice that there is a new firmware upgrade that should be applied. The information that came with the Express is not very forthcoming. I tried searching for information here in the forums on procedures for applying the upgrade but have notice a few folks having issues.
My guess is that I just connect it to the my macbook and download the update. Is there any steps I need to take.
Thanks in advance for all assistance.

By default, when you open the AirPort Utility, it will check to see if the AirPort device has the latest firmware ... and, if not, it will offer you an opportunity to upgrade it. The decision is totally up to you. If you don't want the utility to check each time, you can disable that option. (ref: AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > File > Preferences)

  • After setting up my brand new Airport Express 802.11n and accidentally using it to connect my iMac to the network...my iMac no longer connects through Ethernet?  Any ideas...I have tried everything without success!!

I have been using Apple technology for about 10 years starting with 1st generation iPods and our house now includes a 5 year old iMac, all versions of iPods and touches, Apple TVs (both generations) and most recently an iPad 2.  I have always told family and friends that Apple technology just works.  Unfortunately that stopped today.  I bought a new Airport Express 802.11n to use for AirTunes around my new pool.  I set it up from my iMac and accidentally used it to connect my iMac to the network for a short time.  Now I can no longer connect the iMac to the network using a hard wired Ethernet cable.  I have tried resetting everything possible, from hubs to routers to the Mac itself and it just will not connect to the network through Ethernet any longer.  I am now a very frustrated Apple user especially when the support site says I can't use the fast path support because my product was manufactured 5 years ago...I just bought it at BestBuy yesterday.  All other computers and itechnology in the house are connecting via wifi and Ethernet without any issue except from my new iMac boat anchor.  Anybody who can help me???  Thanks

John, thanks for the email so quickly.
I too hope I haven't tried "everything" either but I am reasonably technical.  I had done what you suggested to do before but I did both again.
Ethernet is yellow in the left side bar.  In the right pane it's status says Connected but then below it says "Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet."
I have tried the assist me menu and Network Status has Ethernet Green, Network settings Yellow, ISP Green, and Internet and Server Red and Failed for both.  I have turned things off and on, checked cables, deleted all locations and tried restting them up but to no avail.  I even disconnected everything and connected the mac directly into the cable modem itself and the thing still will not connect.
    Thoughts???

  • Brand new Airport Express (n) worked once and now stuck on orange

Just bought an Aiport Extreme Base Station (n) and new Airport Express (n).
Using my MacBook Pro and Airport Utility I replaced settings on my existing wireless network for the AEBS and things seemed fine. There was no question in setup by the way about WEP or WAP security...
Then, wanting to add Airport Express to the network for iTunes streaming I plugged it in.
At first, airport utility recognized the AEx: so I added it to the existing network, this time being asked about security, I set up WPA personal.
Then, airport utility finishes the task and my AEx disappears from view. Stays stuck on orange light.
    Resets have not helped.
My AEx is therefore to all intents and purposes useless.
At least I can use the AEBS for internet access.
    What has happened?
Apologies if I have duplicated a topic, but this is weird.

You do need to hold the reset button for 10 sec to factory reset the unit (see page 32-33 of the Setup Guide for detailed instructions). And then your AX will be visible from Airport Utility again. If you still can't see the AX, try using a ethernet cable to connect to the AX instead.
Let us know how you get on!

  • No detection of a brand new Airport express

Hi everybody, I purchased an AE a few days ago. I tried to make it work at home but without any success. This is the exact sequence of what happened after I installed Utility Airport and updated it to the last version.
    1) At first UA didn't detect the base at all, even after many attempts and after having changed 3 rooms in the house (in the beginning I located AE close to a TV antenna cable and several electric cables, so I though there was interference).
    2) When UA finally detected AE base, it was unable to set it up due to some unspecific error.
    3) I closed UA application (as requested in the pop up window) and re-launched it. Again UA was unable to detect AE.
This frustrating three-points stuff happened several times; I tried soft and hard reset many times but I never succeeded in setting up the base and the light always remained amber flashing.
Then I tried the whole process in my office and it worked immediately: I set it up and it worked both for internet connection and music streaming from ITunes. I came back home and again, though this time the base was setup and the light was stable green, my macbook was unable not only to connect to the network, but even to detect the base.
I even downloaded KisMac for checking channels of my neighbors' wireless networks, but it seems they are all using 6 and 11 channels, while my AE is set on channel 1.
Has anyone experienced anything like this ? Any help would be extremely appreciated. Thank you and Happy New Year.
    Manuel

I am just piling on to this last message-I don't have a successful connection. I was able to get a green light on the airport express unit by first doing a wired set up to my verizon fios modem- as I did setting up with wireless printers. But the airport utility does not find it. It did find it once - and the itunes speaker icon lit up - but then it couldn't find the boze and - even after complete restart - it can't find the AE. I suspected it was a problem with the WEP encryption on my FIOS modem - but since the light is green I'm assuming it has the correct network settings. It's just not recognized by my Imac. I just want to install it on my existing network to output itunes to the Boze speakers in another part of the house. Note - I've been configuring this right next to the modem and wireless distance is not an issue.

  • Problems with brand new AirPort Express

I have had some issues with a new AirPort Utility.  Here's the timeline of what I did/what happened:
    - Plugged in APE
    - Istalled AP Utility on Win7 machine & updated to latest version.
    - Found APE wirelessly ok.  Also connected RJ45 cable, and found it that way.
    - Went through set up, and entered details of home network to try to get APE to connect to it.  Seemed to go ok, but needed to restart the APE to complete.
    - On APE restart, could no longer find it over LAN or Wireless.
    - Also, couldn't restore my original network connection on Win7 machine.
I have now hit rest button on APE, I have done system restore on Win7 machine, I have power-cycled my router, and I have tried to repeat entire set up process using an XP Pro machine.  All to no joy.  Still can not see APE (from either machine, LAN or wireless) and still can not connect Win7 machine to home network (fine connection via XP machine, iPad and other devices, etc.)
    Can someone help?

    Ok, let's double-check your WDS setup ...
Set up a Wireless Distribution System (WDS)
(Note: To facilitate the WDS set up, place the base stations in near proximity of each other during the initial configuration phase. Be sure to jot down the AirPort ID MAC addresses for each of the base station that will be used in the WDS.)
Main Base Station Setup - AEBS
Either connect to the AirPort Extreme Base Station's (AEBS) wireless network, or, temporarily, connect directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility (located in /Applications/Utilities), in manual mode, to make the following settings.
    WDS Tab
o Enable this base station as a WDS: main base station (checked)
o Allow wireless clients on this base station (optional)
o Click "+" to add the Remote base station.
    o Select the AX.
o AirPort ID: <verify that this is the correct wireless MAC address for AX>
o Auto configure as a WDS remote base station (checked)
    o Click "OK."
o Verify that the AX has been added to the list.
    o Click "Update."
o Allow wireless clients on this base station (checked)
o New network name: <verify that this is the same as the network name for the AEBS>
    o TCP/IP: Configure using DHCP
    o Base Station Password: <the AX base station's password>
    o Confirm: <same as previous step>
    o Click "OK."

  • Brand new airport express won't show up on AirPort Utility

    Hello!
I'm connecting a new 802.11n Airport Express to my existing network. My Airport Extreme (which is only a few months old) and an older AE are working properly and show up just fine. I took the new one out of the box, plugged it into a wall plug near me and it just blinks amber or has a solid amber light. I've tried resetting it (which seems silly, since I only just bought it an hour ago).
Any suggestions? I'm going to use the new AEx to extend the network in the house.
    Thanks
    ~Robin
    Version of Airport Utility: 5.5.1
    Wireless Security: WPA2 Personal

OK, figured it out myself. I plugged a CAT5 cable into the new AEx and it showed up just fine. Got it configured, unplugged the CAT5 cable and it all seems fine now.

  • Brand new Airport Express not working

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! I just bought my first Apple (mac book) and got the airport express. Hooked it up, set up my network, etc., and everything was working fine for the first 24 hours. Now, the Airport Express is not working. It is flashing the amber light which seems to indicate no internet connection....when I plug the ethernet wire directly to my laptop from the modem, the internet works. AND, the airport express seems to be working with the laptop (because I see my wireless network name in the menu of networks). Problem is, I can't get on the internet wirelessly anymore....so it seems the airport express is not getting the signal from the modem...but again, the modem is working fine when connected to the computer directly. I tried to reset the airport express and then go through the set up again, to no avail...still that flashing amber light. UGH.
    Thanks!

You're very welcome! The key is that DSL/Cable modems tend to "remember" the devices connected to them. The rationale of doing the power recycle is to give the modem an opportunity to "recognize" the newly connected device. Most of the time this re-recognition phase takes just a few minutes, but it's not unusual for it to take hours, and thus, why I recommend overnight to rule out any other issues.

  • New Airport Express is not discoverable by Airport Utility

    Hello,
After searching the forums for a while and not finding any posts that really address the issue I'm having, I've finally decided to create my own post.
I received a brand new Airport Express from my girlfriend for Christmas. I've finally gotten some time to set it up, but I seem to be having some issues with Airport Utility even seeing it. I haven't even been able to set it up because I can't access it. Airport Utility simply says that it cannot find any Apple Wireless devices and continuously asks me to rescan.
The first time I plugged in the Airport Express, it flashed the green light once like it's supposed to, then the light turned to solid amber for a couple of minutes, then started blinking. It still does this even after I do a factory reset.
Very rarely Airport Utility will see it, but it takes a lot of rescans before it finally does. When Airport Utility does finally see it after several rescans, I enter manual setup, enter my information and click Update. After I click update, I'm no longer able to connect to the Airport Express at all until I do a factory reset. Then it takes a lot of patience and several more rescans until I can finally connect again.
I first placed it directly below my desk, but have since tried many other locations throughout the house to see if it was location that was the problem. That is not the issue.
The intention is to have it join my current wireless network, so I do not have an ethernet cable plugged into it. I've tried plugging one in, but with the exact same results (Airport Utility still can't see it).
Any ideas as to what may be the problem?
    Thank you!

    Bob Timmons wrote:
If AirPort Utility is still having trouble "seeing" the Airport Express (AX), temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AX. You may need to move the AX close to your computer for this and restart both your computer and the AX.
Once you have the AX configured, you can move it back to the desired location.
So I am able to connect to the Airport Express via an ethernet cable and configure it like that, but I am still unable to connect to it wirelessly. I wonder if there could be something wrong with the unit itself? After configuring it, I can't even see it in the Airport menu on the menu bar on top.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Issues Connecting to internet with new Airport Express

    Running a Macbook pro 15" - 10.4.11
I just bought a brand new Airport Express a few days ago. I just recently got my internet service through Comcast restored and am eager to get a wireless network up so I can play Xbox Live again.
So issue is this: I plug the ethernet cable from the Cable modem into the airport, the light goes green. The computer is registering a strong signal, Network preferences says Airport is connected to my network. However, Safari keeps saying its not connected to the internet. When i run system diagnostics, I get a green light on Airport, Network settings, system settings, and ISP. But the light on Internet and Server stay red, and Diagnostics says it can't fix the problem and I need to contact my ISP. Comcast said they couldn't help, my connection was fine and they even refreshed it to no avail. When I plug my Ethernet cable directly into my Macbook pro, I get on the 'net no problem. I'm dumbfounded.
I'd appreciate any sage wisdom offered. Thanks!
p.s: Also, when I run a connection test on Xbox 360, it picks up my network, connects quickly, ISP confirms, but ultimately fails at DNS Server. Hmm.

bl4ckr4bbit, Welcome to the discussion area!
Most cable modems require that you power them off when you switch the Ethernet connection from one device to another. Until you reset the modem it will not communicate with the new device. When the modem is powered on it detects the new device and starts talking to it.
Some cable modems have a reset button on the back for this reset.
Some cable modems have a small internal battery which must be removed for this reset to occur.
Sometimes the cable modems must be unplugged several hours or even overnight to allow equipment back at the ISP to reset.
Did you power off the cable modem when switching the Ethernet connection?

  • How to setup a new network with a new Airport Express

I need help setting up a brand new Airport Express and creating its own wireless network. I have a Motorola SB6141 cable modem that is connected to a Airport Extreme. The new Airport Express will be connected by an ethernet cable in another room.
To set it up where do I place the ethernet cable, in the WAN or Ethernet on the back of the AE?
    Any other suggestions are appreciated.
    Thank you for looking.

Once you have the AirPort Express powered up, click on the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear.
Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express and follow the prompts.
