Cannot update ipod software from 1.1 to 1.2 - support pages NO HELP AT ALL

HELP ME PLEASE! Every time I try to reset, restore or update my ipod to install the 1.2 software for iPod I get error message: "ipod" cannot be updated because it contains files that are in use by another application.
So how do I get rid of these files, how do I override this? it will not let me perform an update, a restore or a reset. I backed up everything so I could clear it but the directions state press hold button on then turn off- how the **** do you turn it off if its on hold? ARRRGH!
Anyway- nothing i do works

I don't know why update fails but I give you my expiriences with the new iPod firmware version 1.2. This new version has an annoying bug, it plays titles not until the end, instead it interruptes playing and continue with the next title.
At the moment I downgrade to the older version 1.1.2 and hope to remove this strange behaviour.

  • Cannot update iPod software even after setting automatic detection

Hi, I've been trying to update the software on my 5th gen iPod but to no avail. I've recently bought the pod and just installed iTunes. It informed me that an update was available for the iPod but I can't get it! Everytime I click on Update in the Version section on iTunes, it says "iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server because you are not connected to the internet....Make sure you internet connection is active and try again". The connection is active and i've even tried the method in the hot topics support section telling you to go to 'LAN settings' under the 'Connections' tab in Internet Options and under Automatic Configuration, set it to 'Automatically Detect settings' but this has still not worked. Can someone please help me as this is doing my head in?!!!

  • I cannot update my ipad from 4.2.1 to anything else.  please help!

    Hello,
my ipad is on 4.2.1 and I want to update it to the latest version but I cant.  I went through the entire trouble shooting, and I even updated my macbook/itunes.  I have restarted my computer over and over, I tried using the different USB ports. I also tried deleting the the ipsw's and downloading new ones.
is there anything you i can do to update it? please help me!!
my laptop tells me that this "ipad cannot be updated/restored.  this device is not eligble for this requestd build."
    thank you!

    Specific error messages and resolutions
This device is not eligible for the requested build: Also sometimes displayed as an "error 3194." If you receive this alert, update to the latest version of iTunes. Third-party security software or router security settings can also cause this issue. To resolve this, follow Troubleshooting security software issues.
Downgrading to a previous version of iOS is not supported. If you have installed software to performunauthorized modifications to your iOS device, that software may have redirected connections to the update server (gs.apple.com) within the Hosts file. First you must uninstall the unauthorized modification software from the computer, then edit out the "gs.apple.com" redirect from the hosts file, and then restart the computer for the host file changes to take affect.  For steps to edit the Hosts file and allow iTunes to communicate with the update server, see iTunes: Troubleshooting iTunes Store on your computer, iPhone, iPad, or iPod—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you do not uninstall the unauthorized modification software prior to editing the hosts file, that software may automatically modify the hosts file again on restart. Also, using an older or modified .ipsw file can cause this issue. Try moving the current .ipsw file, or try restoring in a new user to ensure that iTunes downloads a new .ipsw.
Usually it's just Anti-Virus, try disabling and restoring again. Also ensure iTunes it up to date.
    Hope this helps!!

  • I purchased from previous owner and cannot update installed software

I purchased my MAC Air from previous owner and cannot update installed software: iphoto, numbers, pages...  How may I get access to these software? I am willing to purchase license, if necessary...just do not know what to do.

The first thing you should do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. I suggest you install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for some MacBook Air models. If you don't have the media, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.
If the previous owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Apple customer service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able toauthorize it under your ID. In that case, contact iTunes Support.

Are you sure you have a 2G? A 1G can only go to 2.1 via iTunes but a 1G can go as high as 3.1.3 that you get here:
Purchasing iOS 3.1 Software Update for iPod touch (1st generation)
    Identifying iPod models
To If you do have a 2G that can go to 4.2.1 by:
iTunes: Backing up, updating, and restoring iOS software
For 4.2.1 you need iTunes version 10.X and that requires OSX 105.8 or later.
If you have 10.4.11 you can only go to iOS 4.1 since that OSX can on go to iTunes 9.X

  • Error message when trying to update ipod software

I have OS 10.3.9 but am getting the following message...,
You cannot install this software on this volume. This update requires OS 10.2.8 or higher. Please advise. Thanks.

If you're trying to install the updater onto your iPod directly, you can't. Instead, install the iPod updater onto your hard disk, and then open the /Applications/Utilities/iPod Software Updater folder. There should be one or more copies of the iPod updater inside this folder; double-click the most recent copy. Once the iPod updater has opened with the iPod plugged in, click the Update button and then follow the onscreen instructions to complete the update. If you get a message telling you the updater couldn't find a firmware image, choose the Update iPod command from the Options menu to continue with the update.

I am trying to update ipod touch from ios 4.3.2 to ios 6.1.3.  I have it connected to my computer, and the summary in itunes indicates the update is available.  However, when I click "update", it opens Windows Explorer and waits for a file name to open.

I am not at that computer now, but I did check via windows update & with the check updates menu choice in the itunes program  - neither indicated a newer version of itunes is available. (it is a vista computer).
The itunes software on the computer displays my ipod & the current ios (4.3.2), and indicates a newer ios is available (6.1.3). When I choose "update", I am taken to Windows Exploer and prompted to choose a file to open. it is as if the "update" button has the incorrect code attached to it.
The ipod is working, but there are several app I would like to install, but I can't with the current ooperating system.

  • HT2404 When I try to download free updates for apps, I've suddenly started getting an error message saying: You cannot update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software." But I do own the apps. And I haven't changed my ID

When I try to download free updates for apps, I've suddenly started getting an error message saying "You cannot update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software".
But I HAVE owned the software, for ages. (And, in any case, the apps in question are all free.)
And I don't have multiple Apple IDs.
    What can I do?
    Any advice much appreciated

This can occur if you bought the machine used and iLife was reinstalled with another AppleID.
This also can occur if the "free apps" you downloaded have paid upgraded versions and/or are now payware and you can't get updates.
All software from MAS is copy protected, it might be free as in "no charge" but it's not free in the sense you can share it with others.
