Cannot update ipod

I get an error message that says "The ipod cannot be updated. The required file is locked." What do I do?

What both of you need to do is restore the iPOd to factory settings http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983 its the only way to get rid of the message and update the iPOd

  • Add files to library, but cannot update ipod to put them on there

I do not even have the option to do this since my ipod is constantly stuck on the "do not disconnect screen" when it is plugged in. Also, "file->update ipod" isnt even lit up so I cannot select it to update my ipod. I tried reinstalling the software, resetting, restarting, etc, but nothing. This is the second ipod nano apple sent me, since the first one froze. Could this be a problem? I think the serial number is the same though. Is there anything else I need to reinstall?

Is the iPod showing up in iTunes under Source?
    See this...
Transfer Music to Your iPod (Tutorial)
If the iPod is not showing up in iTunes...
iPod missing in "My Computer" or in iTunes for Windows
iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes
Also, there is no need to send an iPod in for service just because it is frozen.

  • Cannot update ipod due to files that are in use by another application

Uploaded iTunes version 7 onto my PC on Friday. Ever since my fifth generation video (30GB) ipod cannot be either updated with version 1.2 software, syncronised or restored due to the error message "The ipod cannot be updated becuase it contains files that are in use by another application".
Not sure the issue is related to the itunes upgrade but it is a strange coincidence.
Also having a problem becuase my pc runs outlook 2002 which is not compatible with itunes 7 and my calender cannot be syncronised. Don't know whether the two issues are related.

Kudos to Randy. Thanks a lot; this worked for me. I simply opened itunes (and minimized it) with my ipod connected, opened "My Computer," right-clicked "IPOD" and ejected it. As soon as the icon in My Computer showed that it was ejected I quickly maximized itunes, clicked IPOD, and clicked the update button. Wah lah! iPod updated. Hope that helps the rest of you out there with this problem! Thanks again!

  • Cannot update iPod 5G, error message appears.

When I try to update my 30GB iPod, it always displays an error message saying, "The iPod cannot be updated. An unknown error occured (1417)."
Does anybody know what this means and how to solve it?

Some people have had success trying the fix mentioned here.
    Error 1417/1418.
Could you also take some time to pass some information for the Apple Engineers?  Please copy and paste these questions into an email, make the subject of the email "iPod error report", add your answers, and send the email to Roy at Apple.
    1. What error code are you seeing?
    2. When are you seeing it (restoring or updating your iPod)?
    3. Which iPod do you have?
    4. What version of Windows do you have?
    5. What Windows service pack do you have installed?

  • CANNOT UPDATE IPOD NANO

I have an Ipod Nano and I have songs on my Itunes that my daughter has downloaded previously to her Ipod and I also imported CD's that I want to put on and I keep getting the message that the songs on my Ipod cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for updating no longer exist. Can anybody help me? I am going nuts trying to figure this out. Thank you!!

In iTunes, go to Edit>Preferences>iPod (tab) and which is selected of these three?:
    - Automatically update all songs and playlists
    - Manually manage songs and playlists
    - Automatically update selected playlists only
I'm assuming it's of the latter (Automatically update selected playlists only) but the ones that are checked are not there anymore.

I don't know why update fails but I give you my expiriences with the new iPod firmware version 1.2. This new version has an annoying bug, it plays titles not until the end, instead it interruptes playing and continue with the next title.
At the moment I downgrade to the older version 1.1.2 and hope to remove this strange behaviour.

  • ITunes 8.02 cannot update iPod behind proxy

I tried to update my iPod Touch today. I was able to start the download at home, but was unable to finish it. Came to the office, where we are behind a proxy server and iTunes gives the error: iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server because you are not connected to the internet. However, my proxy settings work fine for iTunes Store (download of songs, apps, and podcasts), Safari, Firefox, FTP applications, etc. The only other program that has problem is NetUpdate from Intego that also claims it cannot connect to the Internet.

I've been having problems with iTunes using an authenticating proxy for more than a year. I've given up on it more-or-less (I keep reporting it as a bug whenever a new version of iTunes comes out), but decided to check to see if anybody's come up with clever ideas since. Someone linked to this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1748?viewlocale=en_US
"iTunes under Mac OS X currently does not work with authenticated proxy servers."
I've noticed a couple other posts link to a program called "authoxy" that will add the proxy authentication information for you, but the reason authorization is required to use a proxy is so that it can't be done without your knowledge. So check your local security policy to see if that's acceptable. It's not for me.
