Cannot update or restore ipod Shuffle

Having trouble restoring my iPod shuffle with iTunes7- it says that it cannot be restored because it contains files that are in use by another application.
This message also appears when I try to eject the Shuffle in iTunes.
I also noticed that of the 512Mb capacity, 91.3Mb is taken up by "other" files.
I did the unit set up for disk use a while back but since switched back to normal use.
Any ideas please?

Hi there,
I just wanna let you know what happened! By the way, I STILL extremely appreciate your info of where we can still download ITUNE 6, and ipod-updater, my friend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For me and my PC, having itune6 back “only” was a partial solution. I went to the local apple store to meet a mac genius in person, explaning the specific situation. Thank God, she instantly got it. Anyway, I could finally mobilize my ipod-shuffle again with itune6 with PC. In the mean time, I have NO plan to going back to itune 7 again.
What a horrible experience it was!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think she saved the face of Apple because I almost was READY to start a serious BOYCOTT movement using my personal connection with a nationally popular radio talk radio host, which was to seriously demonize the (greedy & corrupt?) APPLE. However, because of her sincere caring, wisdom, I will back off for a while and keep my faith in APPLE that they will work so hard to come up with better version of itune 7, hopefully has NO PROBLEM with ipod-suffle ( I noticed that ipod with larger memory have ZERO problem with itune 7) with window system.
Thanks L @ genius bar!!!!!!

• Cannot update or restore iPod Touch

My son has an iPod Touch with iOS 6.1.2 and he has forgotten his passcode. At the same time, his hard drive crashed, so his newly re-installed iTunes does not recognize the device without a passcode. Fortunately, we did sync the device on my MacBook Pro a couple years ago, so at least my machine sees it.
I was able to pull off all of the photos, apps, and music that he has purchased over the last year, so at least we have that backed up to my system.
When I put the iPod into recovery mode, iTunes insists on updating iOS to 6.1.5 before doing a restore. I click to agree to everything (no choice, really) and then wait the 10 minutes or so for it to download the ~850Mb update. After it downloads, my Mac sits and thinks about it for a couple of minutes, then iTunes says it is "processing" the download. A few seconds later an error message indicating a network timeout to the iPod is displayed. (Screen shot below.)
On some other postings it was suggested that the Internet connection for the computer needs to be disabled in order to sidestep the update. This, too, fails because iTunes will not do anything with the iPod unit it can contact the iTunes store.
The iPod is functional in every way (other than being locked because we cannot remember the passcode) and I'm running the latest version of iTunes on Mavericks. If I can get the silly iPod wiped then I can restore all of the apps and data to it manually, but I can't seem to get out of the gate.
Suggestions?
Thanks in advance!

Disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall during the download and update/restore usually resolves the network timeout error.

I finally stumbled across a fix for this problem, and in case someone else is frustrated at some point by a similar issue I'm posting what finally worked to enable me to bring iTunes up at any time (without rebooting first).
The solution was to go to the preferences to uncheck "search for shared libraries".
I'm glad the problem is fixed, but Apple developers really should include a timeout function on iTunes search for a shared libraries. At least a visual dialog to confirm that the application is in the process of searching for a shared library on the network would help provide clues as to what is causing the spinning beach ball to appear right about the time the application window should pop up.

Help I cannot update or restore my iphone3gs?
When I try to update or restore my iphone3gs it say the required resource cannot be found. YES IPHONE3GS IS COMPATIBLE WITH IOS5. I went on the apple website and it came up with this:
The required resource cannot be found: This alert message occurs when your device has a newer version of iOS than what is available in iTunes. When troubleshooting a device that presents this alert message, go toSettings > General > About and check the version of iOS on the device. If it is newer than the latest released iOS version, the device may have a prerelease developer version of iOS installed. Installing an older version of iOS over a newer version is not supported.
I have never updated it before or done the pre-release thing. I dont understand how to fix it my iphone version is 4.3.3 (8J2) and modem firmware is 05.16.02.

• Cannot restore iPod shuffle after update

I have an iPod shuffle original model. For the past few years it has played music as background to my space. Today it went silent.
I plugged into my Powerbook and iTunes offered to update it which is probably the basis of the following problem.
Try and try but that same file from the iTunes library will no longer go into the iPod. I tested with a second one and got the same.
What is the problem? This is my own recording imported via Quicktime and plays on my photo iPod which I'm using instead; but it will not even copy to the iPod shuffle. But it was there for years!
This is galling.

I had this error as well. I re-installed the updater to get it working again.

• Cannot update or restore my ipod

I recharged my ipod shuffle in someone else's computer and it seems because i didn't remove it using itunes it is now completely stuffed. My O/S will recognise the hardware but if i try to view the contents through windows i get either a "Insert device into drive k:" message or "incorrect I/O" message. When i run the restorer it simply freezes up the second i insert my ipod. I am extremely computer literate but I am at my wits end with this any help would be much appreciated
Ipod Shuffle Windows XP

I have the same problem and of course I tried the 5 R's. The driver is not missing - how can you remove a driver that is built into Windows? Let's pretend you actually can't for argument's sake You certainly wouldn't do it on purpose then ask why the hardware's not working, would you?
1. Reset your iPod, iPod nano, iPod mini, or iPod shuffle. <-- obviously.
2. Retry your iPod with a different USB or FireWire port on your computer (please note that the latest iPods can only be synced through USB).
<-- shouldn't matter on onboard USB ports when it worked before on the same ports.
3. Restart your computer, and make sure that you have the latest software updates installed.
<-- Like the drivers weren't already built-in to Windows and something's going to be updated in 2006 for Windows XP USB/Flash-drive support on PC hardware from 2002? Of course I'm updated.
4. Reinstall your iPod and iTunes software. You can download the latest versions of iPod Updater and iTunes from our website.
<-- I hadn't installed iTunes at all when the problem occurred. Why do you need iTunes itself to fix an iPOD? There's a separate Update application *that doesn't notice iTunes isn't installed when you launch it*?
If it mattered, I'd expect this application to tell me. Or it's worthless.
5. Restore your iPod using the latest iPod Updater. Please note that restoring an iPod will erase all songs and files on your iPod and restore it back to its original settings. After restoring, you can transfer your music and files from your computer back to your iPod again.
<-- doesn't work, "Cannot mount iPOD" But we knew that would happen if the drive cannot be opened in Explorer.

• Restoring iPod shuffle

After restoring my son's iPod shuffle (2nd gen) I am having trouble loading songs using the "autofill" command. I get the error message "The iPod cannot be updated. The required folder cannot be found."
Any idea what I need to do to fix it? Thanks
iPod Shuffle, 2nd generation Windows XP
Windows XP

Hi tjwils528,
There are a few things that can cause a "required folder cannot be found" kind of message with an iPod (this is actually the first time I've seen one of those error messages on here with a shuffle, but the same troubleshooting steps can be used).
So, let's go ahead and work through some steps to try, one-by-one, and see if anything seems to work for you.
The basic procedure with the following instructions would be to disconnect your iPod from your computer prior to actually performing the task.
Then, when you are complete with that step, open iTunes, and connect your iPod to your computer again, to check if you are still getting the error message. Repeat this kind of sequence as you go onto each next possibility to try (sorry if any of the steps relate to an iPod with a display, not a shuffle).

iTunes needs to be reinstalled:
It's possible that iTunes needs to be reinstalled, perhaps because some required installation files were not loaded properly, or have been deleted.
Disconnect your iPod from your computer.
Go to "Add or Remove programs" in Control Panel. Find "iTunes" and "QuickTime" on this list, and remove them both.
Then, download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, to clear out the remaining iTunes and QuickTime installation files off your computer (see this MS document for information on it):
Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Also, use this article to manually remove the left over files from installation:
Removing iTunes and QuickTime for Windows
After you've done that, restart your computer.
Then, go to this page to install the iTunes + QuickTime installation pack onto your computer again:
Download iTunes - 7.1.1.5
Now, restart your computer once more.

Corrupt iTunes Library files:
-- It's possible that there is some sort of corrupt file in the iTunes library, which is causing this error.
When you are getting this error message, does it seem to occur when it hits a particular song(s) in the sync?
Try using the technique described in this article, for help in doing this.
If so, then try tracking down where which song that is, and then attempt to play that song in iTunes.
If you think you've found the culprit, delete it from your iTunes library (with your iPod disconnected), and reimport it into your iTunes again.
-- Make sure that your external hard drive is connected. If you store your iTunes library songs on an ex. hard drive, then make sure that it is connected to your computer, or else you will have files that cannot be found in your iTunes library.

USB issues:
This error could also be caused by something with your computer's USB connections with your iPod.
-- First, try connecting your iPod to a rear port, not the front one.
-- With your iPod disconnected, try unplugging all other USB and FireWire devices (except your keyboard and mouse).
-- Update or reinstall your USB drivers. For instructions, see the steps in this article.
-- Also, you could try using a different USB cord. Disconnect your current one from your computer and your iPod, and restart your computer. Now connect the new USB cord (if you have another one) to your computer, and connect your iPod.

Firewall issues:
It's possible that your firewall or antivirus software is blocking an iTunes process (like iTunesHelper.exe, for example), from running properly when your iPod is connected.
First, let's determine what Internet security software you have.
If you're not sure, you can go to "START > All Programs", and browse along the list for your security program.
(Make sure to do the following with iTunes closed and your iPod disconnected.)
Here are a couple of firewall/security programs that come to mind, that we have kbase articles (or I have the security program myself) about how to allow iTunes onto it:
If you're using your Windows firewall, then you can use this article to enable iTunes on it:
How to enable iTunes on Windows XP firewall
If you're using McAfee Personal Firewall Plus, then use the instructions in this article to enable iTunes there.
(That article above only mentions "iTunesHelper", but allow anything Apple/iPod/iTunes related on that list... not sure if that is the only one listed there, but look around anyway).
If you're using Norton Internet Security
If you are using something else, then usually, you launch the program, and go to some sort of section like "Settings", then go to something that says "Firewall settings", "Internet Permissions", or something similar.
Try to find a list of applications that it "Allows/Blocks".
Then, like normal, enable "iTunesHelper.exe", or "iTunes.exe", and "iPodService.exe" or anything else iTunes/iPod related (again, not sure if there are many things on that kind of list).
Now, after you've enabled iTunes processes on your firewall, restart your computer. Then, check your firewall again, just to make sure that your settings haven't changed back to default, and are still allowing iTunes.
Then, connect your iPod, and see if it syncs with iTunes or not.

Let's test something...
If that does not fix your issue, then I would also like to do a little test with how something acts on your computer for you:
With iTunes opened and your iPod disconnected, go to Task Manager (CtrlAltDelete), and click on the "Processes" tab. Here, there ought to be these three processes listed:
iTunes.exe, iTunesHelper.exe, and iPodService.exe.
Carefully watch those three processes (if they are all there), and leave your Task Manager up and runnning so you can see what happens.
Now, connect your iPod to your computer.
Do those three processes stay in your Processes area when the iPod is connected? Or does some other strange thing occur?
For example, do either of those applications only stay for a few seconds when your iPod is connected, then promptly disappear?
Now that were done with the test (please describe the results of what happened in a reply), you can move onto some other possibilities:

Other causes:
There could also be other things that could cause this error.
For example, if your computer is out-of-date with its Windows Updates, that might be a contributing factor.
You could try enabling disk use in iTunes, then resync your iPod with iTunes, and see if the error still occurs. (for instructions on disk use, check disk use
This could be a digital signing issue on your computer, too. See this MS document on that for details:
Detecting digital signing issues in Windows XP
In addition, I would suggest that you could try reinstalling your iPod's software update files.
See this for instructions:
What to do if iPod can't be updated because the firmware file was corrupt or not found
For some more ideas on "other causes", you could take a look at what is mentioned in this article. (i.e., running Chkdsk on your hard drive, or keeping your computer up-to-date with its downloads).

I hope one of those things solves your issue,
-Kylene

• I cannot update apps on ipod. Help please.

So before, i already posted a question about this and i just figured out that it is my internet conection that has the problem, not the ipod.
It seems that my internet connection or router settings has a problem connecting to my ipod or i don't know... Please help.
Usually, when there is an app update, a number pops up beside the app store icon, right?
And when you open the app store:
WHEN THERE IS AN APP UPDATE - it displays all the apps that needs to be updated
WHEN THERE'S NONE - it displays, ALL APPS ARE UP TO DATE.
My problem is...
When i connect to the internet at school, it shows the updates or the all apps are up to date when i go to the app store updates tab.
recently, i leave the update counter (the one beside the app store icon) until i get home so i can be sure there are apps that needs to be updated.
When i'm home and connect to the internet. Open the app store >updates tab:
WHEN THERE IS AN APP UPDATE - it keeps on loading.
WHEN THERE'S NONE - it keeps on loading.
And when there's an update counter and i connect to the app store at home, it disappears.
Please help.. i cannot update my apps on my ipod. There isn't any problem with my device. I just restored it and i started again from scratch. No pictures, music, just apps.
HELP PLEASE. THANK YOU.

Please help.. Thank you.

• Cannot update 6th gen iPod nano.

Hi all,
I am trying to update music and software but I get the following message .... "The iPod ....... cannot update because it contains files that are in use by another application".
I have done a couple of resets and have tried the restore in iTunes a few times - both give the same message.
It has only ever been plugged into my mac. The problem occured before upgrading to Lion and I had hoped that this would have been solved with the upgrade, but no such luck.
Can anyone help please?
Thanks
Steve

I don't think so, how can I check this please?
Thanks for your answer though - very much appreciated.

• Updating and Restoring Ipod

When I connect my IPod (color display) to my computer, ITunes recognizes it only if Norton AntiVirus is turned off. Display says there is an available update for the IPod, but when I try to install it I getan error message "Error 1415 -IPod cannot be updated or restored". Can anyone help?

You actually don't need to update your ipod, and the same thing happened to me. Mine finally did it when I restored it, but the update didn't seem to change anything...
