Anyone out there can share any pearls of wisdom.

Hello fiduerr,
Sorry about the long post.
According to your original post you want to update your iPhone 3GS from iOS 4.1 to iOS 4.2.
From other posts it looks like you are currently syncing your iPhone to iTunes using one of your Mac's
with a PowerPC G4. You may want to look at a hardware upgrade because going from Tiger
Mac OS X 10.4.x to Leopard Mac OS X 10.5.x is as far as you can go. If it is in your budget and
you can get a late model new to you Core2Duo Mac with original documents and *+_install discs_+*
with Snow Leopard Mac OS X 10.6.x you may be better off because you will be able to upgrade/update software in the immediate future rather painlessly. Even with an older CoreDuo
Mac it may be time for a change. I mention this because of your post about
spending some money on new hardware.
To get to iOS 4.2 now requires a combination of software and hardware requirements which may
push your hard drive, CPU and video card to their limits. iOS 4.2.x requires iTunes 10.1.x which
requires Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later. iTunes 10 requires 32MB of VRAM.

Can I upgrade to v10.5 on my Mac? Don’t have original 10.4.11 discs…

When you go to a category such as Mac OS v10.4 above Login/Logout on the right of the screen
you can select more options and do a search from there.
Hope this gets you closer to where you want to be.

  • Ou cannot update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software?

I have apple 3gs 16 gb ios 6.01, when i tried to update software i get error saying, you cannot update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software.
My software were downloaded by other apple ID from where i had given for repair. Now same software am unable to update due to error.
how to get rid of this error, tried googling it but seems nobody is able to resolve the same

You need to delete all Apps installed via that guy's ID, else ask him for his password. Thereafter, log off out of his ID.
Login with your ID. Install Apps via own ID. That gives you complete ownership.

  • HT2404 When I try to download free updates for apps, I've suddenly started getting an error message saying: You cannot update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software." But I do own the apps. And I haven't changed my ID

When I try to download free updates for apps, I've suddenly started getting an error message saying "You cannot update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software".
But I HAVE owned the software, for ages. (And, in any case, the apps in question are all free.)
And I don't have multiple Apple IDs.
    What can I do?
    Any advice much appreciated

This can occur if you bought the machine used and iLife was reinstalled with another AppleID.
This also can occur if the "free apps" you downloaded have paid upgraded versions and/or are now payware and you can't get updates.
All software from MAS is copy protected, it might be free as in "no charge" but it's not free in the sense you can share it with others.

  • "Cannot update iPhone Apps since I have not owned the major version" proble

I have three iTunes accounts which I use to download music and apps from iTunes (USA, UK and Italy).
Since now when I had to update software I just switched between accounts and downloaded the apps. This morning iTunes told me that I "Cannot update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software", which is not true.
This is blocking all my updates, not just some of them. What could it be and how can I sort it out?

I flagged this with Apple support after writing a blog post on the subject at http://is.gd/9wdB1
Apple's initial response was to helpfully inform me that things had always been this way, whereas very recently you only saw updates for the signed-in account. The issue's now been escalated, but I've not heard anything back.
The only 'solution' at present I've found is to click every Get Update button and dismiss the 'You can not update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software' dialog when it appears, sign into your other account immediately and then download everything. Frankly, this is pathetic and a massive UX disaster from a company that should know better.

  • You cannot update this software as you have not owned a major version of this software? This is what I get when I try to update my apps on itunes.

You cannot update this software as you have not owned a major version of this software? This is what I get when I try to update my apps on itunes. What does this mean..I have been having trouble..and reached out but they seem to not understand the problem.. No one has been able to help..It is like I don't have my past history with them anymore? I don't have my past purchases either.

Same here. Just becoming a nightmare. Updated iTunes and now can't update apps it itself is showing as available updates. Count me in on the latest "You can not update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software." bug.
Next I have to post about a new problem in iPhoto on a new thread.... it lost the "link" between some but not all photos I have in the library and what it itself posted to FaceBook a few hours ago...
    Incredibly frustrating.

  • Applications problem: "You cannot update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software."

    Hi all,
RE: Applications problem: "You cannot update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software."
Until recently, I have not encountered this problem.  And I am facing this problem for both my iPad and iPhone.
I only have 1 iTunes account and the most recent change was that I switched the location from Singapore to UK (I'm currently in the UK).  I also updated my applications a couple of times before since the change in location, so I doubt it's due to the location change.  I've tried signing out of the account in the iTunes accounts on the devices, then signing back in.  I've also tried restarting the devices (and for the iPad, I even updated the iOS).
Any idea what else I can do to try to rectify this?
    Thanks and regards,
    Tammy

    Hi there!
    Thanks for replying!
    1.  Yup, my iOS is the latest (6.0.1), and I have 7 apps on my iPhone that apparently have updates.  But it's been 6.0.1 for quite some time and I've also been able to update the apps till just this week.
    2.  I don't have a credit card associated with my account anymore.  Ever since I changed the location, I removed the credit card details.  But I didn't have problems with any of my apps (updating or downloading new ones) until this week.  Also, all the apps I've downloaded since I came to the UK are free apps.
    I still don't know what's wrong.

Going from iPhoto v 8.x.x to V 9.x.x is called an upgrade and requires the purchase of iPhoto 9.
To go from v 8.1 to v 8.1.2 is an update and is free.

  • HT204074 "You cannot update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software."

Why can't I update my apps?  This message appears "You cannot update this software since you have not owned the major version of this software." I did not encounter this before even after changing my iphone.

I've also had this problem for the last month for my iPhone, thinking that it was because I switched country region in order to use these Canadian iTunes gift cards I got (still the most likely reason). But today I decided to just give it another try for the heck of it and they all started updating! May be because Apple fixed this problem, or may be because I re-formatted my computer and accidentally reverted all my data on my computer via Time Machine to several months ago before this problem started happening. I do have two different apple ID's (one is @me.com and another @gmail.com), so it could be an ID-related problem, although re-checking all my accounts on the iPhone everything is still signed-in the same way with when I was having the problem... so it makes me think Apple fixed it? Maybe give it another try... good luck.

  • Cannot update OSX version 10.6.8 on my mac in order to sync iphone 5s with itunes

I cannot update OSX version 10.6.8 on my mac in order to sync iphone 5s with itunes, I am currently running 10.5.8 which appears not to support iphone 5s, i have available space on my mac but cannot seem to install. What am i doing wrong, what do i need to do ?

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and check the processor.
If it's a PowerPC Mac, it's already running the newest OS it can.
If it's an Intel Mac, click here, install the DVD, and run Software Update twice.
If you upgrade the OS, back up the computer first.

Snow is Intel only.  You could get Leopard 10.5 by purchasing a Retail (black) Disk off eBay or calling Apple Service and ordering one from them.  That would allow you to run Safai 5 and iTunes 10, I believe, but would lose Classic support in the process.
