Cannot Update Vault in Aperture 2

Today I started getting an error (actually 6 of them, all the same) when I try to update my vault. I am told "Aperture has detected a problem with the vault “Aperture Vault”. You need to remove this vault and create a new one." When I try to update the vault I get the "Comparing Library to Vault" barberpole for a while and then the error. Prior to today this vault file has been on the same drive for over a year and has worked flawlessly. I have done the following: 1) Deleted the old vault ad created a new one, 2) Deleted the Aperture plist file, 3) Repaired permissions on my boot drive and run Disk First Aid on the Western Digital MyBook (the drive is only 1/2 full) 4) Rebuilt the Library and run a Consistency Check 5) Trued putting the vault on any of my other drives.
None of this has worked, I still get the same error message. Any suggestions as to what to try next?

I had the same problem and tried about everything I found on this forum. None of it worked. Then I found the following two blog posts:
http://rickcogley.blogspot.com/2010/01/fixing-aperture-vault-errors-from.html
As I am not familiar with Terminal I did dare changing the settings. Trying via CMD-I didn't change anything.
Then I found the following solution
http://www.onlinenerd24.de/2009/04/17/aperture-you-need-to-remove-this-vault-and -create-a-new-one-error-message/
Hooray! Removed the Flickr and Facebook plugins and everything is solved!
Guess, I'll need to upgrade to Aperture 3 since this functionality is now standard available. Was that done intentionally, dear Apple?

I am away using Aperturre on new MacAir and external HD as back up for recent photos and to house my vault. When I try to update vault, I have a permissions problem. I used Disk Util to repair MacAir and external HD and it says each is OK. Checked repair permissions from warning window that notified me I had a permissions problem. selected ext HD icon and "Get Info" and everything looks right. Next step to update my vauil?

On the Get Info windoe for the external drive at the bottom is a checkbox Ignore ownership on this volume.
If it is not checked check it and try again.

  • Cannot update vault or generate new one

I am at my wits end. After many problems early on with Aperture 3, I thought I finally had it working. Aperture user since version 1 with about 11,000 images in managed library. When A3 came out, I updated immediately, and like many others, suffered a world of woe.
Due in no small part to issues I had with so many things like endless reprocessing, strange jpeg exports, off color previews and thumbnails, crashes, hangs, etc, I upgraded to eSATA external disks for the library and copied it to reduce fragmentation. Over the last couple of months, I have flushed caches, deleted plists, reimported, etc. During all of this time, I just made multiple copies of the library rather than update my vaults. I thought it was more or less working, and in the last few weeks I have finally been able to import some new projects (though not without drama if I do not just use a new project and move things later).
Recently, I started trying to update one of my Aperture 2 vaults. It gets about halfway through, then hangs forever. I have since discovered that I cannot generate a new vault at all. So far, I have tried a new vault, new vault with all other vaults deleted, flushing caches and deleting plists. I have run all three options of repair, repair permissions, and rebuild database from the cmd-opt startup menu, multiple times. Each of the latter times, I used a freshly formatted, empty disk (HFS+, journaled) and have tried eSATA and FW800.
When this version of the library was moved from A2, it was first allowed to process with faces off. I then turned on faces, and after another long while, it finished processing again. Places is off. There has been some flakiness with this iteration of the library in occasional jpeg exports looking very blue, a few images originally imported into A3 saying they were not and needing reprocessing, and rare hangs. I think it was done with 3.01, but am no longer sure.
Based on commentary by rw boyer about TIFF's causing issues, I rounded them all up, exported them, and deleted them from the active library, emptying the trash afterward. Still no joy. Still, I suspect a corrupted image or images in there somewhere.
I am sort of out of ideas. I could start over with last A2 library and re-import everything since, but that will take a lot of time. Any idea if it will work? Should I re-install A2 and rebuild that library first? Arghh!
In my humble opinion, Apple has really fumbled here. A3 is very ambitious, but just not ready for prime time. In the long wait for it, I spent some time with the Lightroom 3 beta. It is workable, and I will go to it if I have too, but really like Aperture better. I could also retreat to A2 and hope they fix this. I hope one of the good people in this discussion has a good suggestion.
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • Cannot create vault; crashes Aperture

    Hello,
I have Aperture 2 (latest update) and Snow Leopard (also latest update). I have a library stored on an external hard drive connected by USB. I can open Aperture and work in it just fine (although I do get the annoying serial number issues that are problems for other folks). I would like to create a vault on a second external hard drive that is connected to my AEBS, but when I select Add Vault nothing happens. If I click the arrow button to expand the Vault section of the screen on the bottom left, Aperture crashes - the toolbar buttons disappear, it stops responding except for the menus.
I know that a common issue is that the external drive on which I want to create a vault is not formatted for Macs, but I do not know how to check if the drive is formatted correctly. I use it for my Time Machine backups so I always assumed it was formatted correctly but I'm not sure.
I'm at somewhat of a loss. Any ideas on troubleshooting tips?

I'm not sure that this will work. It might, but frankly I wouldn't back up to a vault over wireless (and over a file sharing protocol like AFP).
Time Machine works with this because it uses disk images (specifically Sparse Bundles), which deal with the issues of the file sharing protocol. Aperture will not do this with its Vault, so it could be perilous at best. I would recommend you just plug the USB drive into Aperture, update the vault, and then store the drive away at a safe location. Make a reminder to update the vault on a weekly basis or whenever it makes sense.

  • Aperture 2.1.1 and OS X 10.5.5. - Can't create nor update Vaults!

After updating to OS X 10.5.5 and installing the latest RAW file plug-ins update from Apple yesterday, I cannot update my existing Aperture vaults, I get the following error message:
    The following error occurred:
Aperture has detected a problem with the vault “Aperture Vault”. You need to remove this vault and create a new one.
I deleted both vaults, created new vault, and when I press Update button, it compares empty vault to my library for some 4-5 minutes (why?! It's just empty vault!) and then Aperture shows the same message:
    The following error occurred:
Aperture has detected a problem with the vault “Aperture Vault”. You need to remove this vault and create a new one.
I ran Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions - no problems. I installed 10.5.5. combo update over the existing system, restarted, and still I cannot create a new vault. The same error message. Any ideas why?
In Console I see two lines from Aperture:
08.9.17 19:28:52 Aperture[336] .sdef error: Operation could not be completed. (NSXMLParserErrorDomain error 1549.)
    08.9.17 19:28:52 Aperture[336] line number: 2
I don't know is it related to this problem or not.

I am having exact same problems. Software update says that I have all the latest updates for system and Aperture (including the latest RAW file plug-ins). I can't update vaults. Every time I try to update, I get the following error message:
    The following error occurred:
Aperture has detected a problem with the vault “Aperture Vault”. You need to remove this vault and create a new one.
I have deleted all vaults and tried creating new vaults. Aperture will permit the creation of the vault, but when I attempt to update it for the first time, Aperture works away for a while comparing the 'library' to the empty vault and returns the exact same error message:
    The following error occurred:
Aperture has detected a problem with the vault “Aperture Vault”. You need to remove this vault and create a new one.
I rebooted computer and restarted Aperture holding down the option key. I requested that Aperture perform a 'Consistency Check' and when completed, I restarted Aperture the same way so that I could request that Aperture 'Rebuild Now' all projects. Once both activities had finished, I tired again to create a vault and update it and was able to create the vault, but unable to update it. The same message was returned:
    The following error occurred:
Aperture has detected a problem with the vault “Aperture Vault”. You need to remove this vault and create a new one.
I did notice a change in Aperture's behavior before and after performing the 'Consistency Check'. Before performing the consistency check, Aperture had stopped giving this message upon quitting:
    'Updating information for sharing previews'
After the consistency check, Aperture upon quitting would update information for sharing previews.
Is there a fix for this?

  • Update Vault Error

I can no longer update my Apertue 2.1.4 vault. Since installing Snow Leopard, I first noticed my iPhone would no longer sync pictures via Aperture 2, but would via iPhoto. Now I find I also cannot update vault to an external drive. Have redone permissions, rebuilt Aperture library, tried to create new vaults on the original external drive and the internal drive. Always get same "Update Vault Error" response and images don't appear to go into the vault. I see similar posts with no solution. My Aperture Library has 14000 photos.
I wonder if these problems will carry over to an Aperture 3 library.
    Hoping for some advice

No, I thought of that, I tried to make it simple:-
    Lacie/backup/Vault
    Or on the internal:-
    Users/me/pictures/vault
It may be that one of the images or possibly a sidecar file in my project is corrupt, thus making the library itself corrupt.
Therefore, when Aperture tries to compare its internal library structure to the Vault, it finds an error and blames the Vault for being corrupt; even so it still finds errors trying to backup to a blank brand new vault. I have a problem with the fact that it is suggestng that the vault be deleted(!) and replaced, even though the problem is likely to be with the internal Library itself and not the vault. And replacing the vault with a new one is impossible (still has same error).
Unfortunately I have no way of finding out which one of the 2500 or so images in the library has the problem. I thought that the commandoptionrestart Aperture to rebuild the library would have worked, but unfortunately it doesn't.

  • Aperture 2 won't show or update vaults

I have a client getting 34,000 errors when attempting to update his vaults in Aperture. Vaults aren't showing up so I tried doing the command option rebuild at launch. He cant seem to get past this error. His hard disk is almost full and I am getting him a larger drive. I am thinking he attempted to create a backup vault, and Aperture may have run out of space. The errors all say "error creating a directory in vault Aperture Backup". Anyone deal with this before? Thanks

Disable your firewall and antivirus software and try recovery mode in order to restore the iPad.
You can read about it here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4097
    Recovery Mode Instructions
Disconnect the USB cable from the iPad, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off iPad: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for iPad to turn off.
If you cannot turn off iPad using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the iPad turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to iPad. When you reconnect the USB cable, iPad should power on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears you can release the Home button.
If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the recovery mode alert that iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode.
    Use iTunes to restore iPad.

  • Aperture 3 Vault - Updating Vault issue

    I've upgraded to Aperture 3.
    I created a new Vault.
I started a backup to the new vault 14 hours ago and it's still chugging away with the progress bar at about the 50% mark with a status of "Updating Vault". It hasn't made any progress since it stopped copying the masters about 2 hours ago.
My library is around 1.5TB and 175K files.
This is the third time I have tried backing up to a new vault and it always hangs at this point. I'm currently using Superduper to make a copy of my library so I have a current backup of some kind.
    Is anyone else experiencing this?

You guys aren't backing up these vaults to an external Western Digital hard drive are you? If so, the problem could be that the drives are formatted in fat-32. Aperture 3 doesn't support fat-32 drives. Aperture 2 didn't support them either but was, apparently, more tolerant about them. Aperture 3 flat out doesn't work with them.
Any external drives used with Aperture 3 MUST be formatted in Mac extended format.
FWIW, I updated the vault on my Mac Pro for the first time (since installing Aperture 3) this morning. It completed without issues and took the normal amount of time for a brand new vault creation.
BTW, I choose to leave my master images in their current location and reference them instead of copying them to my Aperture Library. I believe a vault update of an Aperture Library that is managed (all masters copied to the library) instead of referenced (left in their original location) will take longer and make for a much larger vault backup.

  • Aperture won't allow update vault

since update to 10.8 I've been having problems with aperture like vault wont update(will freez up), dodge&burn tools not working right, overall performance slow. I trashed the app and reloaded seems somewhat better but my computer still freezes when trying to update vault ?

Hi johnmyself, cor-el has covered Flash. For the other two:
    * Adobe ReaderAdobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape - because Adobe doesn't support Reader XI on Vista, you're stuck with the Reader X series and corresponding plugin 10. Mozilla's plugin check site only considered the current plugin 11 series to be up-to-date, so you'll have to rely on Adobe to keep you on the latest Reader X and plugin 10. You can use Help > Check for Updates in Adobe Reader X to watch for updates.
    * Adobe Flash PlayerRealNetworks(tm) RealDownloader PepperFlashVideoShim Plug-In - this is something supplied by RealDownloader and most likely would be updated when you update that software.

  • Cannot click Update Vault path

I want to relocate my vault to another HD. I follow the directs (ejecting HD tghat houses vault, disconnecting computer, reconnecting computer, selecting the vault), but "update vault path" is grayed out. Running OS 10.8.5, Aperture 3.4.5

I'm a little uncomfortable with your mixing of terms like vault and library, and then talking about deleting libraries.
It is essential you grasp the concept of a Library and Vault, and the relationship between two before deleting anything.
    Your phrases:
    1) "I opened Aperture, opened Show Vaults and there is my libarary called Academics on the new HD."
    and
    2) "If I open the new HD, the library is listed, but it is not listed under show HD"
suggest to me you are having problems writing the words you mean, nothing wrong with that, we all do it. But if you write the wrong words and then get bad advice that you then act on, that's very bad!! So I just want to be extra careful on what you are really saying here.
    1) When you choose 'Show Vaults' you see Vaults not Libraries
    2) "Show HD" makes no sense, so I assume you mean "Show Vaults" again.
Previously you spoke of having a library called 'academics' and now you have found a vault called 'academics' on your old HD. Is this the same thing, did you just call it a library before or did you create a new vault for academics?
So let's start again and keep everything simple.
Forget what you have for a second, and lets just go through some basic concepts.
You buy Aperture and run it. You get a default library in your Pictures folder on your internal drive called 'Aperture Library'
You decide to create a second library called 'Documents' for storing your documents in (I do this).
You now have two libraries 'Aperture Library' and 'Documents'
Aperture can only work on one library at a time. While working on 'Documents' that's all you see. You don't see your images from 'Aperture Library', just 'Documents'. When you switch to from 'Documents' to 'Aperture Library' you now only see your photos in the 'Aperture Library', you don't see your 'Documents'. They are both completely seperate.
You decide your 'Aperture Library' is getting too big for your internal drive so you buy a large external drive. You use Finder to copy the 'Aperture Library' from your Pictures folder to you external drive.
To open your copied 'Aperture Library' from the external drive you can either use Finder to go to your external drive and double click on the copy of 'Aperture Library'. Alternatively, within Aperture you can use the menu item 'File' the sub menu item 'Switch to Library' and then the further sub menu item 'Other/New...' which will ask you to navigate to the library you want to open.
Now you have three libraries. 'Aperture Library' on your internal drive, 'Documents' on your internal drive and the copy of 'Aperture Library' on your external drive. If you are happy the copy is complete and intact you can then delete the 'Aperture Library' on your internal drive.
If required, you could then repeat for your 'Documents' library.
That's how Aperture works with libraries. There is no updating of paths, you just tell it which library you want to open, either by double clicking in Finder, or by using the 'File->Switch to Library->Other/New...'
Once you have opened a library in Aperture, it will remember it as a shortcut on the 'File->Switch to Library' menu, but while you have multiple copies of the library available this is unsafe to use as you wont know which copy of the library it has opened. Wait until you have deleted the old copies of the Library before relying on these shortcuts. Until then, use 'File->Switch to Library->Other/New...' (or Finder) to be certain you are opening the right copy of the library.
So now lets talk about Vaults.
As noted above, Aperture can only open one Library at a time. Regrdless of how many libraries you have, Aperture will only open one at a time.
Lets call this Library your current library.
When you create a Vault, you are creating it for your current library only. The vault you create and your current library get married. They are joined. When you update the vault it will copy the current library to that vault.
If we now switch to a different library, my 'Documents' library, when I 'Show Vaults' I will have no Vaults. This is because the Vault I created was for my 'Aperture Library' not my 'Documents' library. If I switch back to my 'Aperture Library' I will once again see the Vault I created for my 'Aperture Library'. Switch back to my 'Documents' library, and again I have no Vaults to show.
If, while still in my 'Documents' library, I now create a new Vault, this Vault gets married to the current library, my 'Documents' library.
So if I now switch back to my 'Aperture Library', I will see one vault, the vault for the 'Aperture Library' and if I then switch back to my 'Documents' library, I will also see one vault, the vault for the 'Documents' library.
The Vaults panel in Aperture is not a navigator, I will never see these two vaults in there at the same time. The Vaults panels only shows you the Vault that is married to the Library you currently have open.
This is (most probably) why you wont see your 'academic' Vault and 'Aperture Library' Vault in Aperture at the same time. They are Vaults for different libraries so you will only see the Vault for the current library.
For completeness I should mention that a Library can have muliple vaults (multiple backups). But all of these are married to the same library. So when you 'Show Vaults' you only ever see the vaults for the current library.
If you decide to move your Vaults from the old HD to the new HD, when Aperture shows you the Vault, it shows as 'Disconnected'. This means Aperture knows it has a Vault for the current library, but it now doesn't know where the Vault is located. This is when you now use the 'Update Vault Path' so you can tell Aperture where the Vault is now located.
    (really) hope this helps!

  • Aperture locks up when trying to update Vaults.

When I try to update vault I get the spinning beach ball and Aperture becomes unresponsive. I have to use force quit to exit the application.

I'm having the very same problem. This is bad news.  I upgraded to Mavericks last week, and then had to update Aperture.  Now it says my 400+GB library has to update, and then at the end it won't complete.  I've done this with a three months older copy of the library.
Apple, you need to figure this out--I'm a working professional and now I don't have access to 4-5 years worth of work--this is serious.  My library appears to be corrupted.

  • Aperture Vault - cannot restore Aperture 2 vault with Aperture 3

    Hi
I have a vault I created last year on Aperture 2 located on an external hard drive. I tried to restore the vault using Aperture 3 and it prompted me to upgrade the restored library, which I did. Nothing shows up in the library in Aperture. There is 150M of disk space used on the external drive, so I know there is data there. Any ideas?

But Aperture 3.3 requires version 10.7 (ML) or later, thus do I need to upgrade into ML or are there other options?
To be able to upgrade to  Aperture 3.3 or later you need to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.7.5 (Lion) or Mac OS X 10.8.x (Mt. Lion). Upgrades from the AppStore will give you Mt. Lion or Aperture 3.4.2 right now.
I do not know how to find free plug-ins for Aperture 3.2.x, perhaps you can achieve the effects that you want with external editors?
If you decide to upgrade the OS and Aperture take some precautions:
Check all other programs and device drivers that you rely on, if they are compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if you can get upgrades. No Power PC program will run any longer, they are not supported on Lion or later. Most of my device drivers could no longer be used, and for some programs I had to buy new versions. You can get a complete list of the installed software and the versions from the "About this Mac" panel from the Apple menu or the System Profiler.
Make a backup and if possible a bootable clone of your system as it is now, just in case you want to revert to the older system. Otherwise it will be nearly impossible to downgrade again.
Also, in rare cases the upgrade of the Aperture library to version 3.3. caused problems. While still running Aperture 3.2.4 make sure your Aperture Library is in perfectly working condition by running all three "First Aid" options: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual
    Good Luck

  • Error when I "Update Vault Path..."

I have had some lingering problems with my Aperture library that I am just getting around to addressing. One is that I need to back up to my vault, but it is not letting me do so. When I hit the little (red) refresh button on the bottom of my window, I get the message:
    "Update Connected Vaults?
Some vaults are not connected. Do you wish to replace the contents of all connected vaults with the current contents of your library?
    This cannot be undone."
Because I'm an adventerous guy, I did this, but when I try to refresh my vault the next time I get the same error.
So I started poking around and found the "Update Vault Path" menu item. This sounds like it should solve my problem, but when I go through and select my vault and try to update the path I get the error message:
    "Incorrect Vault Selected
The path could not be updated because the selected vault does not match the original vault."
This is definitely the right vault. It is on a partition of my Time Capsule. However I may have moved the file or changed the name of something a few months ago, which I suspect is why I'm having this problem now?
What do I do to get that vault path back in order?

Is this Aperture 3? Are you talking about one library or multiple libraries? How many vaults do you have connected to the library?
If you click the *show/hide Vaults* button what does Aperture show you? This is the name of your vault(s) and their locations. Does that match what you think it should be?
Sounds like you may be better off just creating a new vault and using that going forward.

  • I want to transfer my vault to a new HD. The new has been formatted for Mac. Update Vault path is grayed out, despite doing all the correct steps beforehand

I have followed directions to transfer my vault to a new HD. It is grayed out, despite doing all requisite steps beforehand. If I get 'info' on Aperture the lock icon shows and I cannot change it to unlock.

I think you may be getting confused by the 'Lock'.
The vault is locked in the files system to prevent accidental deletion.
The reason the 'Update Vault Path' is greyed out is because it is still detecting the original vault on your system.
    Here's a simpler process.
Restart your system (Aperture may still have a reference to the vault and this will clear it).
Make sure you have copied the vault to the new location.
Move the vault to trash. It will warn you the file is locked. Continue to move it anyway.
Empty your system trash.  It will warn you the trash has locked files. Continue to empty anyway.
Now the old vault is gone from your system, in Aperture, the vault will show as disconnected and you can update the vault path:
You can then Navigate to the new location:
And the vault will reconnect and show the available storage of the new drive:
I suspect you are following advice about trying to remove the lock. But this is not necessary, the lock means you'll simply get warnings when deleting (assuming you have permissions to delete), but you can jsut override these warnings. If at any stage you get an error saying the file is in use, just reboot and retry that stage.

  • After upgrading to AP3, "unable to update vault"

After upgrading to Aperture 3.4.4, I cannot update my vault. The message says "unable to update vault" and asks me to "Fix Permissions" which I do, to no avail. Please advise! Thanks in advance for any help!

What version was the vault made with?
As a vault is nothing more than a snapshot of the current state of the library you are vaulting there is nothing to be lost (except some time) if you just create a new vault. So if you have the room that is what I would do.
Post back if you that won;t work for you.
