Cannot upgrade 3gs to ios5? Itunes does not recognize the update, any suggestions?

Using Windows 7 and itunes will not recognize the ios5 update? States that the version 4.2.1 it the most current software update? Any suggestions?

Do you have the compass app on your phone? If you press and hold the home button do you get voice control? I'm betting the answer to both of these questions is no.
You have an iPhone 3G. NOT a 3Gs. You can not install iOS 5.

I plugged my iphone in to do an update and it was mid way through the update when the phone was accidentally disconnected.  Now the phone is stuck on the screen that shows a cable and the iTunes image suggesting the phone needs to be plugged in to iTunes.  I have plugged it in, powered on and off, attempted to enter DFU mode numerous times all with no success.  ITunes does not recognize the phone and I continue to only receive the screen saying I need to plug in to iTunes..  Please help!

Hold Sleep Button with Home Button toghether until it restarts Always it takes 8 to 15 seconds, after it restarts leave the sleep button and remember do not leave the home button it automaticlly switches to DFU mode.

If the device is not recognized while in Recovery Mode
Note: If your device is working on its own and is not in recovery mode, this set of steps is not for you; do not manually place the device into recovery mode.
Your device may not be recognized while in recovery mode. This can happen during an update or restore of your device. Typically when your device is in recovery mode, it will show the "Connect to iTunes" logo on its display. If iTunes does not recognize the device when in this state, try the following:
    Open the Device Manager:
Windows XP: Click Start > Run. In the resulting dialog, type devmgmt.msc and press Return.
Windows Vista or Windows 7: Click Start. In the dialog, type devmgmt.msc and press Return on the keyboard. If Windows needs your permission to continue, click "Continue".
Windows 8: Move the cursor to the upper right corner, click the magnifying glass, type devmgmt.msc, and press Return.
Click the plus icon (Windows XP and Vista) or the disclosure triangle () (for Windows 7 and 8) next to Imaging Devices, Other Devices, Portable Devices, and Universal Serial Bus Controllers to expand these sections.
Check these sections for one or more entries called Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode). These entries may or may not have exclamation marks on them similar to the following:
If you see only one "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" entry that has no errors on it:
If you see two "Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode)" entries with exclamation marks on them:

My win8 pc hard drive failed.  After the hard drive was replaced, I copied iTunes Media backupfiles from external hard drive (Karen's Replicator backup software was used).  ITunes does not recognize these back up files even though the location is the same as cloud & recently burned music that does show- help!  The backup files consist of 34,000+ songs; almost all burned from my own CD collection.  I do have most of the songs on an ipod classic but hesitate to try to restore from that.  Can someone tell me how to get these 34,000 songs to show up in iTunes?  Thanks!!

This diagram shows how a typical iTunes library ought to be set out (click on it to enlarge)
The red outline highlights the media folder and its contents, the various subfolders are only created if that kind of content is in your library. The right-hand side shows the files that should be found in the iTunes library folder; sentinel is normally hidden so may not be visible. The core of your iTunes library is the file iTunes Library.itl, you need to restore this, the other library files and the Album Artwork folder, as well as the media folder, to restore your library.

iCloud Backup is for your iPad, not for your computer.
Whatever you bought from iTunes is yours forever and can be downloaded as many times as you want. This assumes what you purchased is still available in the Store.
Here is the procedure for your reference.
On a computer, launch iTunes. Click on iTunes Store on the left
On the right you will see this
"Sign in" using the Apple ID used to purchase your songs, then click on "Purchased" (with the orange blob)
On the summary page that appears select the tab "Not on This Computer" on the right.
On the list that appears, select what you want and then click the "Download" button.
Whatever you have that did not originate from iTunes will have to be obtained from whatever means you used to obtain it in the past.

  • After upgrading to 7.1 iTunes does not recognize iPad device

I upgraded iPad to system 7.1.  I got a message to connect to my iMac and iTunes by my USB cable, which I did.
iTunes no longer recognizes the iPad wirelessly and does not recognize it even when attached byUSB cable.
My iPhone (4.2.1) is recognized by cable.
    Any suggestions?

Thank you, I tried uninstalling the device driver to reinstall again. After doing the scan for hardware changes, nothing flashes on the device manager. I dont see anything related to the IPAD or any other device for which driver shows unidentified device. It is as though the device is not being seen by the computer at all..
I even tried flashing the home/sleep buttons together but that doesnt seem to identify any device either.
    Anything else I am missing?

    Hello Wizzie71,
It sounds like you updated iTunes and now it will not open. Try the steps outlined in the following article. You may need to re install iTunes but your library will remain intact if you do.

  • Itunes does not recognize the music from my External HD's music folder

I recently installed itunes onto my new IBM thinkpad. I have tried unsuccessfully to get my iTunes play list to reference the music collection that is located on my external HD (the songs are all AAC formated). I have set the "itunes music folder location" in the Preferences-Advanced settings to the music folder that is located on my external HD; however, for some reason itunes is not pulling the music from the external HD into it's play list....
I have read other post that suggest that you use the "Consolidate Library" function in the Advanced menu to pull the music from the external HD, but I am afraid that this will simply copy the files from my external drive to the "itunes" folder that installed by itunes on my laptop's C drive. My goal is to keep my laptop's internal hard drive completely free of any music files. Is there some kind of "feed" function that needs to be run to get itunes to communicate with the exteral drive? I really want to avoid moving any of the songs onto my C drive.
Any advice you may have would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, you can try signing up for DropBox - it's a free service that allows you to sync any files between your iPhone and your computer.  More info here:  http://www.dropbox.com/about

Trashcan icon in mail closes the app instead of deleting the email, any suggestions?

First thing to try is a reset: hold the on/off button and the hold button at the same time until the iPad completely shuts down, then turn back on.
May not work, but often resolves simple app issues.

  • ITunes does not recognize the iPhone and hang often

    Hello,
I am an owner of an iPhone 3GS and am very happy with this device.
However, I still had some problems with the synchronization, since iTunes very often depended on when you connect iPhone and the device was detected only after several cold starts.
Today I found a very simple solution that does not appear to help on your support pages.
I changed the USB setting in the BIOS and the problem appears not to since then.
    I have at changed at
Advanced --->>> USB Configuration --->>> Legacy USB Support
Legacy USB Support Enabled was --->>> Enabled
Now, Legacy USB Support is --->>> Auto
I think it would be helpful for your support and their clients, where such a reference would be included on the help pages.
    Sorry my english isnt good

    Hallo,
Advanced --->>> USB Configuration --->>> Legacy USB Support

Some users have reported this issue after upgrading to iTunes 12.  The following procedure should address the issue.
    Quit iTunes
In Windows Explorer, browse to the folder C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes.
Delete the two files highlighted below.
Then restart iTunes, insert a CD, and see if Gracenote can be accessed without errors to retrieve artist, album and track details.
