Cannot use Google search

I recently bought a MAC OS X and so far I like it. However I am unable to use the Google search when I am in Safari. I have to go thru the Google web page to do my searches. I do not know if I messed something up while I was learning how to use my new MAC. I am a former Windows user so the MAC system is a learning process for me at this time. So if anybody can help me I sure would appreciate it. I have followed all the instructions so far with no success.

Well, there is no Return button to click on in Safari, so I'll assume you meant press the Return key. If nothing happens, what were you doing just before this started, or has it always not worked?
You should try creating a new User Account for testing purposes and try using Safari there to see if Google search works; if it does, then the problem is limited to your primary account. If it doesn't, then it's a system-wide problem.
Do you have any Input Managers installed that might be interfering (look in ~/Library and also /Library for a folder named InputManagers). If you have that folder, then you should try creating a folder in the same location (~/Library and/or /Library) named "InputManagers (Disabled)" move them into the corresponding folder, then try restarting Safari to see if searching works again. If it does, one or more of them are the culprit, so list them in your reply.

Read about firewall settings, but Bullguard firewall was not covered

In your "More system details" it says your address bar search provider is Babylon, not Google. Perhaps that's the problem? Or are you using a shortcut to force the address bar search to Google?
This add-on will reset your address bar search to Google: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/searchreset/
That might not stick if you have an add-on which reverts the setting. You can disable nonessential and unrecognized extensions here:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category
Also, you might need to edit or delete your user.js file to prevent your settings from being overridden at the next startup. This article has info on that: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]].
    Any luck?

  • AVG Secure Search appears when I use Google Search from my Home page only.

My home page is the Firefox default page with the Google searchbar. I like getting occasional messages from Firefox when I log in so I don't want to change my homepage. However, when I use the searchbar ''on my homepage only'', I get the unsatisfactory AVG Secure Search results.
UPDATE: I now realize all the troubleshooting information I included in my original question appears under the "More System Details" link next to the question, not in the body of the question. I have copied it here to make it easier to see what I have already done to try to solve the problem, as well as describe the one clue I have that may be relevant:
I have tried all the fixes on various threads, but my about:config is now pristine (no avg or isearch mentions; keyword.url is default). Closest solution is that at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/866327 , which requires changing my home page.
Oddly, AVG Secure Search is ''not'' a problem when I use the Google toolbar or search from the Google website, only when I use the search bar that appears on my home (start) page. This is true even when I return to my home page--if I search from the Google search bar in the middle of the page, I get sent to AVG Safe Search. (isearch.avg.com).
I read in one thread a suggestion to delete my chromeappsstore.sqlite file in my Profile folder. As promised, Firefox created a new one when I restarted it; however, the search bar in the middle of my home home page did not work at all. Tried this three times before restoring my original.
I do not have an application that will open a sqlite file, but I tried doing so in Excel and found a cell containing the following:
    emoh.:moz-safe-aboutsearch-engine{"name":"AVG Secure Search","searchUrl":"http://isearch.avg.com/search?cid={7A3C25A0-E345-4507-AA31-D98F596A81A9}&mid=c48135235ba247d18ac1d14b344db451-addd29eab2809954d5abdf0b991a5b911a297819&ds=is015&lang=en&v=10.0.0.7&pr=sa&d=&sap=dsp&q=_searchTerms_"}
I have no clue what that means, but it is the only thing I can find related to Firefox that still mentions AVG and isearch.avg.com.
At this point my best guess (but it is a guess) is that the chromeappsstore.sqlite file is a key to the complete solution, but I do not have enough knowledge to go beyond and address it. I appreciate any help you anyone can offer.

Here is the way to get rid of the problem once and for all:

Google normally routs the result link to their safe browsing testing service via an onmousedown event that modifies the link (href attribute) if you click it once.
You can check if this bookmarklet makes a difference:
    <pre><nowiki>javascript:(function(){var e=document.querySelectorAll('#search a[onmousedown]'),E,i;for(i=0;E=e[i];i++){E.removeAttribute('onmousedown')}})()</nowiki></pre>

  • IOS6 Magnifier Missing in Safari using Google Search engine

Seems that i have lost the ability to move and place the cursor with or without the magnifier in the google home search box, when using google in Safari.  I can no longer get a magnifier to appear nor move cursor to middle of word to fix a typo.  This happend after IOS6. Anyone else?

Hi I'm experiencing the exact same issue and joined up this forum only today just so I can reply - I have never felt the need to before and this is what the current ios6 issues have pushed me to do! Apple please act on the known issues ASAP and restore your customer's confidance!
Rant over - so yes what I have found is that the top box doesn't work BUT the alternative 2nd search box at the BOTTOM works fine - I'm able to magnify, drag cursor and highlight as per usual
So seems apple can't even be consistent in their issue causing updates!!
@Apple support - please can someone reply and update us on this?

  • Use Google search on word hotwire, Firefox 4 freezes, must reboot, how to let techs no about this?

Windows XP updates current, loaded 4.0 Beta, am not able to send detailed feedback as this process freezes (crash)the browser. Tried a simple search in Google on the word Hotwire. Browser freezes, and stays in memory so I must reboot. I am using IE to send this note as I can't seem to send feedback. Do I need to uninstall FireFox and use a different version?

I see you have McAfee Site Advisor installed, this is likely to be the cause of your problems. Try disabling it to see if you can then use Google. You can also try installing the latest version (3.3.1) of the Site Advisor, that one should work.
Mozilla are planning on blocking older versions of McAfee Site Advisor in Firefox 4 due to the problems they cause.

  • After resetting firefox as it crashed unless on safe mode can't use google search engine

I had to reset Firefox after it crashed unless in safe mode I tried the disable hardware acceleration still crashed so reset. Lost all my bookmarks and history etc and my google search bar no longer works in fact my search bar doesn't work whichever search engine I try and I can't sync either as I have an unknown error

After a reset, you should find an Old Firefox Data folder on your desktop. If you can find that, you may be able to recover your bookmarks and other data from it. Is it there?
On your question about your Google search bar, is it the built-in Firefox search bar with the search engine selection drop-down on the left end?
Do any of these search boxes work:
    * Address bar (also known as URL bar)
    * Built-in Firefox home page (if you use it)
    * Built-in new tab page (if you use it)
