Cannot use Type Tool/Font

I'm having this issue in Photoshop CS3 as well but I'll deal with that later.
I cannot use the Text Tool (The T that lets you write) in my copy of Adobe Illustrator CS5.1.
I made due by using my campus computers to put the font I need into the document, butwhen I opened that same document in my version, the text is just. Not there. At all.
Any ideas?

Myraid Pro.
When I have the document open in another person's copy of Illustrator cs5.1, the text works fine but it just doesn't show up in my copy and any text boxes already made and filled out show blank boxes as well but the text box layer has what I had written in it as the name of the layer.
Like my font doesn't exist. But the name is right there in the library.

Take out 250 fonts. See if the problem goes away. If it does, then you know the bad font is in them. Load the other fonts back in small batches (10-12) and test after each one.
If the first 250 fonts does not solve the problem, take out most of the other 250 ... leave only the basic fonts that came with the system. Then load the others in 10-12 at a time, testing after each.
Free fonts are not always free. Sometimes you have to spend a lot of time to make sure they are good fonts.

  • CS6 Photoshop crashes when trying to use type tool or opening up .psd files. Any ideas on how to fix it???

I have Adobe CS6 Design Standard (MAC). I have had it about a year and a half and use it a ton! Just yesterday while I was using Photoshop, I clicked to use the type tool, the "initializing type tool" box popped up then a few seconds later the whole program crashed. I tried opening it back up and every time I did it just kept crashing. I restarted and shut down my computer, but still no solution. I even uninstalled the program then reinstalled. Same thing. All of my other tools work just fine (brush tool, eraser, crop, etc.). Also, when I try to open up a .psd file the program crashes as well.
I tried searching the internet for solutions, but couldn't find much. One suggestion was to delete the Adobe Photoshop program settings file, I did that but it still didn't work. After each crash a report would be sent to Adobe, then another window would pop up saying that Adobe has found a solution for the recent crash. There is a link that says "please CLICK HERE for further details" but the link doesn't take me anywhere. It just doesn't work!
Has anyone had this happen to them? Any ideas on how to fix it? I really need to get this up and running again!!!

This is a user to user forum and Adobe Staff does drop by.
First thing to try is Reset the Type Tool by right-clicking on its' icon in the Options bar.
If you still have problems, it could be related to fonts. Here is a step by step troubleshooting help doc for that.

  • Photoshop Elements 6:   Could not use type tool because the file could not be found

Using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 well for a while.
Tried to use the Type Tool to overlay text and obtained this error:
Could not use the type tool because the file could not be found
After research, I reset all tools, tried to repair (failed: insert disc one), and then removed/re-installed.  Still have the same problem.
Are the system fonts corrupt or is an Adobe .ini file suspect?
Other reports have suggested using a 3rd-party font manager to inspect/disable fonts.
First wanted to post this error here for feedback/recommendations
Any suggestion on how to recover the Type Tool functionality?

    Adobe Photoshop Elements Repair Workaround
When trying to repair the well-known:  insert disc one, error occurred.  Was able to successfully repair the installation by dragging the entire Adobe Photoshop Elements directory from the original CD-ROM onto a hard drive and executing locally.  Seems it does not like repairing over the CD-ROM but it works correctly if the install source is on disc...

    John,
Yesterday, I decided to completely remove all Adobe products:  PSE 6, Premiere 4, Reader, ActiveX plugins & legacy/old uninstalled product directories that Adobe has left turd-lets around including old Acrobat 3/6 directories.  Used A/D Software to remove all adobe products and then followed your instructions AND the instructions on Adobe's support web site to manually remove these products.
It boiled down to manually removing the entire Adobe directory in Progam Files, "saving" the entire Adobe directory structure in each users (3) Document and Settings in the Application Data and Local Settings (as instructed by you and Adobe) and rebooting.
I also saved the local All Users "configuration" database/cache that contained the Tag and other information to make sure the system was clean
This included following the manual Regit instructions to remove legacy Adobe registry hives.  I deleted all keys for all Adobe product trees that I could locate (following instructions from Adobe).
    Reboot
Scheduled a CHCKDSK on all drives and rebooted
Dragged my complete image library to an archive location and deleted them on the C: drive
    Did a complete system Defrag
Re-installed Adobe and alas still have the same problem with the Type Tool....
The only thing I did not do was selectively remove the "fonts" because various instructions seemed to indicate many are "required" by the windows or other applications and I was not really sure how to identify which ones were safe to remove w/o affecting the core system..  I'll have to re-read these instructions next.
Microsoft has a "Font Validator" tool, but that only checks 1 font at a time and you have to read the "results".  May look for other tools.
Will be able to check the font structure this weekend since it will take some research before I'm comfortable just removing fonts in trial/error mode.  I'll need to make a backup image of my computer before I start this (just in case).
    Thanks for follow-ups too!

  • Bug Report... Catalyst crashes when using type tool

FC is crashing nearly everytime I use the type tool or import type from AI or PS. It happens after import when I select the text to modify. I am running FC Beta 2 and am on Mac OSX 10.6.1. (the properties panel under common blanks out (doesn't show anything ie. X:, Y: W:, H:, Etc...) right before it crashes.)

Thought i'd post back here.. I think I have fixed the type tool issue in Catalyst. Since I am a designer by trade I had about 2500 fonts enabled on my machine... I usually dont have them all enabled but I just bought my new computer and didnt even think about it... so I disabled a good chunk, at least half, and the type tool is working fine so far.... it's only been about an hour or so since ive done it so, not sure if its 100% solution, but at least it has helped...
Might want to check the amount of fonts you have enabled when working with catalyst... keep it to a minimum.

  • InDesign CC crashes every time I use type tool

I just installed InDesign last night and every time I use the type tool the program crashes. Any suggestions?

How do you expect a designer to go through 300 plus fonts to find a font that might possibly cause issues? Indesign CS5 works fine with the fonts installed. Working in safe boot is not an option in a daily work flow. It must be a bug. (Mac intel OS 10.8.4) Indesign does not crash when using text tool on OS 10.6.x

  • InDesign crashing when using type tool - any help?

    Hi,
Ive looked for this problem in the threads here but couldnt find the solution, only similar problems.
I use InDesign on OSX and it works fine until I use the type tool - in new or old documents. Then it crashes.
I tried reinstalling the program and uninstalling, also uninstalling the last fonts added to the system to no success.
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi Steve,
Its CC and it was working perfectly.
I was on OSX Mavericks when I last edited documents.
I've updated the OS to Yosemite a few days ago. Illustrator and Photoshop worked perfectly on Yosemite.
I also installed a few fonts, which worked on Illustrator, if that's of any help.
I've uninstalled all the recent additions and tried using InDesign afterwards, but its still crashing.
I can post the error log I receive.

  • Type Tool, font, opacity

When I type something in type tool, the FONT is a normal color while inside the "box" it is created in. However, when I get out of the box it turns to much lighter color which is barely visible. It is as if the box opacity is set different, but (I dont think) I have no control over that! I have looked everwhere I thought might be a correct place to change this (comments, properties...etc. but I cannot...
    Please help.

    THANKS!
Yes, that was the answer. It wasnt the same problem exactly, but the solution was the same. SO...thanks!!!

  • Using Type 1 fonts in Java 1.5

I'm trying to use the Font.createFont() method to instantiate a Type 1 font. The second parameter to the createFont() method asks for a filename...but what kind of Type 1 file is needed? I've tried .pfa, .pfb, and .pfm files, and Java doesn't recognize any of them as proper Type 1 files.
Can anyone who knows something about Type 1 fonts help? (I only know just enough to be completely confused about the different Type 1 filetypes.)
    Thanks.

The exception I'm getting looks like this:

  • Trouble using Type tool in CS3

I'm trying to type text and all I get is underlines with a blinking cursor...I've tried everything I can think of and not having any luck.
    Any suggestions?

Try resetting the type tool. This can eliminate other problems, like font size too small, etc.
Check your Image>Image Size to make sure the resolution is a number greater than 10.

  • Problems using Type Tool

    Hi
I'm a bit of newbie to Indesign and was just wondering if someone could help me out. I'm having problems with the Type Tool.
I've been working on my first few documents, (simple 1 page postcards), but when I go back to add some more text using the Type Tool it doesn't create the usual type frame/box and the cursor just goes straight to the top left hand side of the document? I'm sure I must be doing something wrong.
Apologies if the answer is dead simple.
    Cheers

You probably have a rectangle as a background on your page? When you click anywhere on that rectangle with text tool, it converts your rectangle to text frame and insertion point jumps to top-left corner of frame.
It´s a bit annoying but you can get rid of that feature from preferences, in Type tab, there is a checked feature Text tool converts frames to text frames (or something like that) Just uncheck it... Then you have to change those accidentally converted rectangles back to grapgic frames (Select rectangle and choose Object>Content>Graphic)
If you don´t want to stop using that feature, you can also draw your text frame outside of page, type you text and move it right position

  • Selecting a color for words when using Type tool

    Mark,
I was successful with adding names to photographs using the Type tool as you suggested, but at only a gray shade. In order to stand out on certain backgrounds is there an option in Elements 5.0 for adding text in either white or black letters?

The Type tool sets the text color to the current foreground color. You set this color by clicking on either the foreground color box at the bottom of the tools menu or the color box in the toolbar.
However, since your text is gray I'm guessing your picture is in Grayscale. If this is the case, change it to color mode. In PSE2 this is: Image>Mode>RGB Color. In PSE5 it might be a different path. The picture will still be B&W but you can now add color text, including black or white as you mentioned.

  • Cannot use drawing tools

I started a series of graphs starting from Presentation mode, using text and drawing tools from the Toolbox at left side, and finished three successfully. But on the fourth one, I suddenly cannot use the drawing tools. When I try to draw a circle, I can see it being drawn but when I release the mouse a different black square shape appears and when I click again it disappears. The same happens for drawing lines, just two black squares appear and then disappear when I click on the graph. I cannot find any Layout menu. However, one of my earlier templates for these graphs is OK for drawing, but I would rather use the present modified one. By the way, the modifications have not caused this change, it worked three times with them.

If this occurs in only the one document, it sounds suspiciously like document corruption. Have you tried creating a new document. transferring the current components to the new one, then proceding onward from there?
