Cannot use Western Digital HDD with Pismo?

Good evening,
I am trying to use a Western Digital Passport 250GB external HDD USB with my Pismo, but it mounts the HDD, but says it is unreadable and then forwards me to the Disk Utility. It seems the HDD but I can't partition it or anything. So, I partitioned it on my G4 iMac, on which it works perfectly, and then removed it and tried to use it on the Pismo; again, no luck! Is this a fool's errand or am I doing something wrong? Please advise as I need more than the 20GB internal HDD.

spcmiller,
I am sorry the suggestion did not work but underpowered USB ports on Mac portables is an issue with external USB HDs. You have something else going on which I cannot answer.
I would suggest posting in the Powerbook G4 (15-inch Titanium):
http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=129
The Titanium also has USB 1.1 ports, has issues with USB HDs, and the forum has more activity than the Older Powerbook Computers. Also, if you wish, perform a search in the Titanium forum for 'USB western digital' for many posts. I saw none that matched your experience. When you post, I would explain that you have a Pismo and were sent to this forum for the reasons I mentioned; you can even link to this thread if you wish.
Sorry I could not solve your issue.

  • Mac Desktop cannot see Western Digital HD

My Mac desktop with 10.9.4 cannot see Western Digital external hard drive when connected via Firewire 800 wire in any port.
If I use the USB 2.0 wire to connect both units, then WD works perfectly.  I have tried repairing permissions,
rebooted, called WD for update, tried a brand new Firewire 800...and nothing has worked.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

Have you tried to zap your PRAM?  Sometimes this will help when a port stops working.

  • Western Digital HDD

A supplier, www.datorbutiken.com, supplied this about IDE hard disks from Western Digital:
Western Digitals hårddiskar fungerar ej tillfredställande med moderkort som har nForce2-chipset. Detta fel yttrar sig på Western-diskar med varierande firmware-version, det går därför ej entydigt att peka på specifika modeller. Det kan alltså fungera i vissa fall, men risken att det inte gör det är för stor för att vi skall kunna rekommendera denna kombination. Ovanstående gäller även moderkort med VIA KT133A och 686B chipsets.
Short translation: "Western Digital HDDs does not work very well with..." You see what mobos are concerned. I can't find this info in the SATA section, why it seems to be a IDE problem.

The WDC + VIA 686B compatibility issue is way old and affected only WDC models with particular production or lot codes.  I can't remember for certain now if the solution was a firmware update or replacement from WDC, but I seem to recall that a replacement/exchange was offered by WDC.
Not heard of any problems with NForce 2.

  • Cannot use the application "Safari" with Leopard

When I try to open Safari in my non-admin account I get an error message reading 'You cannot use the application "Safari" with this version of Mac OS X'.
Bizarrely, if I logon as the admin account it works perfectly.
I have repaired permissions, run software update, repaired permissions again, logged in as SU and fscked and still the same thing. I discovered that Omni Outliner would open the plist but I don't have the knowledge to interpret that.
I think I have used Safari on this laptop since upgrading to Leopard. Most of the time I use Firefox so it hasn't been an issue anyway. The really bizarre thing is it works normally in the admin account.
    All suggestions welcome.

Thanks for that. Tried it to no avail
I have found out what has gone wrong but I have no idea how.
I keep all my browsers in a subfolder of the applications folder. I trashed Safari with the intention of downloading a clean version from the Apple website. When I got there I couldn't find a version for OS X (there may be one, it just isn't obvious). So I thought I'd just try Safari one more time from my admin account. Of course the app wasn't in the browser folder. So I went to put it back in the applications folder with the intention of moving it from there to the browsers subfolder.
But no. There was already a newer version in the applications folder. How did it get there? I have no idea. But it opens. So I've moved it to the browsers subfolder and it still works.
So problem solved. I don't understand how it happened. And especially why it worked all along in the admin account.
Thanks to everyone who suggested solutions.

  • "YOU CANNOT USE THIS APPLICATION SAFARI WITH THIS VERSION OF MAC OS X"

hi, just downloaded the update for mac 10.5.1 - all went well - then tried to open Safari and received this message "YOU CANNOT USE THIS APPLICATION SAFARI WITH THIS VERSION OF MAC OS X" - I have tried downloading Safari again through netscape but that does not seem to work either - ANY IDEAS???? Thanks

It sounds likely that you have more than one copy of Safari on your hard drive. The one in your Applications folder is the one you should have. The one you're trying to launch is an older version that somehow got moved somewhere else, so that the new version got installed in your Applications folder (where it should be) while the old version is running (or trying to run) from another location.
First, double-click on the Safari application file that you have in your Applications folder. Does it run properly, without error messages? If so, everything is fine. You just need to get rid of the old version of Safari and set it up so you can easily launch the new version that is in your Applications folder.
Are you clicking on the Safari icon in your Dock when you see the error message? If so, do this: Control-click on the Safari icon in your Dock and select "Show in Finder" from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open showing the location of that copy of Safari. If that Finder window is any location other than the Applications folder, delete the Safari file that is in that folder. Then drag the Safari icon out of your Dock. Navigate to your Applications folder and drag the Safari file from the Applications folder to your Dock.
You should be all set, but click on the new Safari icon in your Dock to make sure it is the correct version and runs without problems.

  • " You cannot use the application "iTunes" with this version of MAC OS X."

I am getting the response " You cannot use the application "iTunes" with this version of MAC OS X." How do i get Itunes on my Mac. I tried to download the newest version but it won't let me do that either.

What operating system version are you using on your Macbook?  If you are still using Tiger 10.4 the new iTunes requires Leopard (10.5) or higher.

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. You can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 which works on OS X 10.4 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

  • What is the problem with Western Digital HDD and OS X.9?

I received an email from Western Digital saying that OS X.9 could cause my files on my WD drives to be erased and to unplug all my WD drives until a fix is done. Is this a real problem and if so when will Apple get the fix out. I have joibs I have to get out to clients and this is a major problem for me.

Western Digital has found that their applications have got serious compatibility problems with OS X Mavericks, and they have to be updated to make them compatible with Mavericks.
Until then, keep the OS X version you have got. This is a Western Digital problem and this is why your main computer shouldn't be upgraded just after the release of a new Mac OS X version

  • Western Digital HDD spindown problem

    Hy all!
I've got a Western Digital Scorpio Blue 250GB laptop hdd. I want to use it as a file storage drive, because i have an ssd in my system, for the OS.
My problem is, that i can't really set the spindown time to my drive. When i use hdparm -B 127 or less, my hdd spin down after 8 sec (the head parking time is also 8 sec for this drive btw), no matter what the value of the -S in hdparm. When I set the -B value more than 127, my hdd never spin down.

We are using rc.local becauase the terminal commands won't stick between reboots.
Try the following line and then append this to your /etc/pm/sleep.d/50-hdparm_pm
    #!/bin/sh
    if [ -n "$1" ] && ([ "$1" = "resume" ] || [ "$1" = "thaw" ]); then
    hdparm -B 127 /dev/disk/by-uuid/148a880c-b413-4748-b4a8-ddff5a9254d3 > /dev/null
    fi
    then
    chmod +x /etc/pm/sleep.d/50-hdparm_pm
    Hope that helps.
So, I have a laptop (Dell Inspiron 1525) with separate SSD and HDD.
SSD (OS) --->in the original hdd slot
HDD ---> in the ODD slot with caddy
Yes, the OS chooses randomly who become the sda and sdb, that's why i use uuid-s.
I know what is the rc.local, but i don't want to apply my changes every reboot yet, i'm just TESTING. Also, it's not important to keep my changes between sleep states yet because the same reason. I don't know why is this important right now.
Let's be my HDD the sda. I execute theese two commans by order:
    sudo hdparm -B 127 /dev/sda
It's allow the spindown for the hdd, because the value less than 128. It seems it's working fine.
    sudo hdparm -S 36 /dev/sda
It's set the spindown time to 36*5=180 sec, but in my case, no matter what the value is, the real spindown time is always 8 sec (if allowed by the hdparm -B). So this is my REAL problem.
R00KIE: Why the id better than uuid? I tought they're just symlinks.
Yesterday I tried with Fedora LiveUSB but the effect was just the same.

  • "Time Machine" Backup Using Western Digital 160 GB External Hard Drive

I'm trying to use "Time Machine" to backup to a Western Digital Passport 160GB USB 2 external hard drive. The message that I continuously get after starting "Time Machine" is "Preparing...." and the backup process never begins. I've ejected the drive and plugged it back in. The drive is good, as I've been able to drag and drop files on the external drive icon, which is on my desktop. Has anyone else had a problem using a WD USB 2 external hard drive in conjunction with "Time Machine?" Thanks in advance for any insight into this problem!

Suggest you post your question in the Leopard Time Machine forum @ http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1227

  • Western digital hdd 4TB

HELLO guyss,i know its not the place to ask western digital questions
i just bought a new wd mybook 4tb,but  its a little confusing for me,because it has exacly 4tb space to use,but in normall it has to have about 3.6tb space
is there a problem with that?
    please answer

    mohammad64,
no, there’s no problem with that; a portion of the disk will be used to hold the filesystem structure.
Have you used Disk Utility to format your 4 TB drive? Or did it come from the factory with a journaled HFS+ filesystem for use on Macs?

  • HELP!!!!! How do I back up using Western Digital External Hard Drive

I just bought a western digital external hard drive dual option media center and combo external storage. It came with a Dantz Retrospect Express backup software. I can't seem to get it to work. It installs ok, but when I try to open up the software it opens and closes with an error message. What am I doing wrong? How do I back up my files, programs, iTunes and Movies? Is there an easy way to do this? I've ask a lot of people and know can seem to give me a straight answer. PLEASE HELP!!

    Hi Marc and welcome!
It is possible that the version of Dantz Retrospect does not work with Tiger. You do not need to use that program. In fact, a lot of people feel it is rather clumsy and feature-crippled to the point that it is not really useful.
Is that drive a combo FireWire and USB drive? IF so, there is a phenominal program called SuperDuper that does much, much more than Retrospect. It will clone your hard drive which means it will make an exact copy of every last bit and byte and then make it bootable so you can actually boot your Mac from your external drive in the event of a hardware or software problem. It costs only $27.95, but it is well worth it and highly recommended.
There are other programs that do what SuperDuper does, but I like SD best. Carbon Copy Cloner, and LaCie's SilverKeeper are the others most often mention, but their support is not as good as SD's. Both required updates to work with Tiger while SD worked from Day 1.
Plug the drive in and open your Mac's Disk Utility and partition it if you want. One it is formatted in HFS it will work fine.
