Cannot View by Film Roll

I have been going through 5 years of photos updating titles keywords etc. All of a sudden, I cannot view by film roll. It is as if my entire library is one single film roll.
Have checked preferences and set view and sort to film roll. Nothing.
Any ideas?

Debra:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. When you selected that option did you have any photos selected? You can only get that option when you're in the main library and have one or more thumbnails selected. If you had all of the library selected then you'd end up with just one roll for the entire library.
A new folder is created in the originals folder, and the photos appear in my "last roll" - but the new film roll itself does not appear listed as a film roll. (the view by film roll option is grayed out)
Make sure you've clicked on the Library icon in the Source pane. The View Rolls option is not available unless you're in the main libary.
If you're only seeing 1 large image in the window check the slider at the bottom right of the iPhoto window and see if it's all the way to the right. If it is, move it back to where the thumbnails are smaller.
Go to the View menu and make sure that View Rolls is selected. If it is and you only have the new rolls that you created since the incident and one other, that's it. I don't know what you can do to regain your rolls.
One way to start reorganizing your photos would be to sort them by date and the as a first cut, create a new roll for each year. To do this deselect the view by roll and sort by date ascending. Be sure you have "Show Scrolling Information" selected in iPhoto's Preferences in the Appearance section. Then as you scroll down the month and year will be displayed. You can determine the start and end of each year, select them all and use the create roll for them and title it for that year. After each year is completed you might subdivide it further my month for each year. That would at least give you some smaller organizational units.
So you might still have your rolls. You just have to get back to the main library, reduce the size of the thumbnail with the slider and go from there.

  • Viewing By Film Roll Question

    Hello,
Just a quick question regarding viewing a library by film roll:
I have read many of the discussions regarding the file structure in iPhoto 6 and finally getting my photos in the form I want them and where I want them!
Is it correct that you can only view your entire library in film roll order?
If I highlight 'Library' in the source list then I get all the individual rolls llisted. If I highlight an individual year in the source list then the 'view by film roll' option is greyed out.
It would be nice to have each roll in each year available to view - is this possible?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Rather than clicking on a particular year in the Source list, can you perhaps view the entire Library in film roll order and just deselect / un-tick the year(s) you do not wish to include?

  • Film Roll Questions

Hi - I have a few questions regarding film rolls.
    (1) Is there any way to have film rolls appear in the source pane, or is the only way to get a list of rolls by selecting View > Film Rolls?
    (2) How can I rename a film roll after import?
    (3) How can I re-date a film roll after import?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tim

    Timu:
1 - the only place to view by film rolls is the main library as you've identified.
2 & 3 - Yes. Click on the file roll's icon and then go to the Info window at the bottom of the Source pane. You'll be able to edit the title field of the roll and the first date field. The other date fields represent the range of modified dates I believe and cannot be edited.

  • Creating new film rolls

Somehow all of the roll divisions were deleted from my iphoto library. I'm going back to try and reestablish them and reorganize my photos, but when I select a group of photos and try to create a new film roll under the file menu, the option is not highlighted. I tried to create a new roll before selecting photos, but the option is still not highlighted. Any ideas about what could be causing this?

First off: Is the View Menu -> Film Rolls item checked?
To create Film Rolls you must have the entire Library available. So, all the years under the word Library much be checked, plus you must have at least one pic selected.

  • Sorting manually within film roll view

is there any way to sort my photos manually (move them around in prefered order) within the film roll view?
just started using the film roll view. and i love it, all exept that it will only sort by date and i can not move photos around with in the fill roll. only thing i've figured out is to change the date/time manually for each photo. that's a lot of extra work. any way around it?

    [email protected]:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You can't sort manually within a roll. You can within Albums or in the entire library with Rolls tuned off.
NOTE: It's not wise to use your email address either as your alias or placed in any post. Spammers sweep thru forums like this to harvest any email addresses to use. Since you only have a couple of posts I suggest you create a new account with a different alias and let this one die on the vine. You cannot change the alias of an account. TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • "View Film Rolls" is not Highlighted.... how can I get to it? (iPhoto 6)

"View Film Rolls" is not Highlighted.... how can I get to it? (iPhoto 6)

Since you're using the term Rolls you must be running iPhoto 6 or earlier. For future problems be sure you post in the iPhoto 6 or forum.
For this problem the View File rolls will only Be sure you're clicked on the Library. That menu item is not available in an album or other item. If you have clicked the library icon first and it's still grayed out close iPhoto, delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and then try again.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • LR 3.6 cannot view photos in film strip in Library mode.  Can view photos on Develop setting.

On LR 3.6 I cannot view my photos on the film strip in the LIBRARY setting.  On DEVELOP I can view on photo at a time on the film strip (the rest of the photos are not viewable).  This is a new problem which has only occured on the last two imports.

Sounds like a corrupted preview cache.  Close LR and find the catalog on the hard drive.  Rename the lrdata folder (Windows) / file (Mac) - don't touch the lrcat catalog file.  Then open LR and see if the previews reappear.  If they do, select all in Grid view tonight when you go to bed and go to Library menu > Previews > Render Standard Sized Previews - it take a long time so it's worth running overnight.  If everything looks good in the morning, you can delete the lrdata folder (Windows) / file (Mac) that you renamed earlier.

  • 'Film Rolls' View loses sort order when finding photos via Keywords or text

I have my iPhoto Library sorted by Film Roll so when I select 'Library' in the source list I see my rolls listed in date order in the viewing area.
If I try and find photos using the keywords pane or the search field the rolls which match are displayed in the viewing area but the order they are listed is no longer according to their date but some (seemingly) random order.
Does anyone else have this problem?

I find that if I have my rolls sorted by Film roll and Ascending (by roll date) the keyword search results will have the rolls in the correct chronological order.
However if I change the sort order to Descending , the search order remains as Ascending by roll date.
If you create a Smart album for a keyword search then you can sort the photos by any criteria you'd like: Date, Keyword (redundant), Rating or Title and Ascending or Descending.

  • Can't view film rolls

Recently all of my film rolls "went away." When I open iPhoto, and have selected my library, all I get is one large photo. When I double click on that photo, it actually reduces and then shows a row of thumbnails at the top. I have tried View>Film Rolls, sorting by film rolls, rebuilding my library.... No success. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks!! Oh - and it was working fine before but this just happened a day or two ago.

    Hi jazzyjasi,
Take a look at the slider on the bottom right hand corner of the iPhoto window.
Move the slider bar to the left to make the photo thumbnail smaller and to show all the other thumbnails.
I think that is your problem.

  • Windows Vista 32Bit but cannot download HD films on itunes

    Hello, my first post.
I have previously purchased films from iTunes including HD films (probably 720p). I've never had a problem streaming them to my iphone via home sharing and playing them on my HDTV via the digital AV adaptor.
I recently took the plunge and bought a 2TB external hard drive in order to rip all my personal DVD collection and I also purchased an Apple TV 3 on the basis that future purchases would be from itunes in HD instead of blu-ray. However I have now noticed on itunes that I cannot purchase HD films as the option is greyed out and it merely says underneath (THE HD VERSION OF THIS ITEM IS AVAILABLE ON MAC OR WINDOWS 7 COMPUTERS WITH HDCP)
Firstly how do I find out if my computer is HDCP compatible?
Second why does my PC need this as I have no intention of watching my HD movie purchases from itunes but instead intend on streaming them via home sharing over my wi-fi network (would use ethernet but a separate apple tv 3 issue) as my Apple TV 3 is capable of dealing with 1080p and I have a 1080p HDTV connected to it with an HDMI cable?
Surely if I did watch the film via my PC then it should revert to the standard definition version.
I realise my PC has windows vista not 7 but is there a way to tweak my system to allow the purchase because my computer is certainly capable of storing HD video and streaming it to my apple TV.
If I cannot tweak my system to allow the purchase is it possible to circumvent this by purchasing the same HD film direct from my Apple TV 3?
My only question then is, if I do this how does it work?
The Apple TV 3 has no hard drive does it just stream it from the internet? or does the HD version then download to my iTunes on my PC so any future views of the HD film are instead then streamed via my home sharing as opposed to streaming/downloading it from the internet each time?
Hope the above makes sense. Would like to know a definitive answer as opposed to just guessing and purchasing films to test my theory and also don't really have to want to fork out to update my operating system from Vista to Windows 7 or 8.
    Thanks in advance.
For info I have the following system.      Dell Inspiron 530S Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit PC with Intel core 2 Duo CPU E8200 2.66GHz with 2GB of RAM and a 250GB HDD with about 90GB unused. My graphics card is a ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro.

Ok I downloaded a HD film to my iPhone 4 via the itunes app. Although it took a while to download. I then loaded up iTunes on my PC and looked at my purchases section. The HD film was there ready to be downloaded from the cloud onto my iTunes. I pressed the download button but I received a warning stating that you won't be able to view the film on your PC as it's not HD compatible (words to that effect).
Next I connected my iphone to my PC and selected iPhone on the iTunes source menu and set what I wanted synced from itunes to my iPhone but I also selected "back up to this computer" (hoping everything purchased on the iPhone would back up to itunes)
It went through its process and near the end stated "Transferring purchases" it did the apps then did the HD film I purchased. Once completed I went to the movies section on the source menu in iTunes and there was my newly purchased HD film.
I tried to view the film on my PC. It came up with a warning unable to view on this computer. Not a suprise but I didn't actually want to view it on my PC I want to stream it over my wi-fi to my Apple TV which is HDCP compatible.
If it works it will be great, if not, a long winded way to go about this silly issue..
However for those of you out there without an iPhone or iPad then the only way to view HD movies on Apple TV will be to upgrade your PC/Mac and Monitors and graphics card so you can purchase the HD movie from itunes OR
purchase the HD movie from your Apple TV and each time you want to view it re-download it from the internet on ATV. Not ideal if you ask me.
I'll report back on whether ATV3 can stream this newly purchased HD film from "Computers" section. fingers crossed!

  • Will Not Display by Film Roll

I can't figure this out: When I am on the "library" selection, I used
to see a display of all the film rolls, listed separately. Now all I get is a scroll of photos with no indication of what film roll they are on.
How do I set the view so I can view the photos grouped by film rolls?

    Hi Bill,
Actually the same thing happened to me under different circumstances.
I was dragging a group of five images to a keyword in the keyword panel.
I dropped them on the keyword and in front of my eyes the library images were shifting. (I have my view set to rolls). When I was done being shocked I discovered all my images were in one roll. This was not acceptable to me as I really like my dated roll organization.
I had recently done a backup so I dragged out the messed up library and dragged my backup into the Pictures folder.
I no longer use that keyword panel for keywords. I use the "get info" pop over window to keyword my images.
I really don't know what your iPhoto Library looks like in the Finder. If you can navigate there and tell me if your images are still in their dated folders, I can tell you what to do from there.
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.
If your images are still in their dated rolls in the Finder, then you can get those rolls back, but will lose Albums, keywords, slideshow...basically everything , but you will get your roll organization back.
You would follow the instructions on Page 2 for the "add to the library" method.

  • Create Film Roll - greyed out

I wish to create some Film Rolls, to better organize my photos....
As the title indicates the option under File 'Create Film Roll' is greyed out.
    As extra info:
I have checked that all ticks are set under Library, no entry in the search box bottom right, and no filter bottom left.
I have recently imported the files, when I first swapped from WindowsXP, and they weren't put into film rolls which I would like to do now!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
To create a film roll you must be in the Full library
    and
Have at least one pic selected.
Every pic in your Library is in a Roll, they have to be. Rolls in the iPhoto Window (View -> Film Rolls) correspond exactly with the Roll Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library Folder.

  • Some film rolls are named "originals" - why?

I'm still a fairly new user of Macs as well as anything like iPhoto. For quite some time, I only imported my photos into iPhoto for fear of breaking something.
Well, I'm getting over that fear, and I have noticed that some of my film rolls have a name of "orignals", but some (which do have edited photos in them) don't have that name.
This might be due to some photos possibly being imported more than once (again, possibly from concerns to be certain I could back up my photos), but I'm not 100% certain of that. Is it possible to either get rid of these rolls (but not delete the photos), or to completely rebuild my iPhoto library, without loosing the edits, and metadata I've already configured?
    Mac mini 1.25/512   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Lew,
At one time you probably used the "add to library" and pointed to another iPhoto Library folder to import.
If you did that, then what you would get is:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
So, if you don't want the images that are in the Original rolls, as they are the originals of edited or rotated images, then just delete them. If you still want a copy of them for safe keeping then drag the images or the roll called Originals out of the iPhoto library window to your desktop, then delete the roll within iPhoto. You can burn the ones to disc on your desktop if you'd like.
    Or:
you can combine images from that roll to another roll with the edited images in them if you like.
To create a new film roll, command click each image or roll of images or combination of both, then go to File>create film roll.
This will create a new film roll containing all the images you selected.
    Lori
