Your original post does not make it clear where your films came from and therefore what format they are in. If they are not from the iTunes Store and have come from various other sources they may be in formats that QuickTime 10.1 (aka. QuickTime X) cannot itself understand.
It is possible however to install QuickTime Player 7 under Lion which understandard more 'older' formats, and then add various codecs to it to allow it to play many other formats that QuickTime X does not understand. The following downloads would probably be useful to you.

No, if you rent a movie on anything other than your computer it can only be watched on that device. If you want to watch it on multiple devices, rent it on the computer then it can be transferred between devices, but can't be moved to more than one device at a time.

Many online media providers block this - Sky and Amazon Prime do too I believe.
I would have to assume that the app providers cannot offer video Airplay for contractual reasons with the movie studios though it may just be they don;t want to enable their apps to do so.
It's not Apple preventing this, while you could see it would be in Apple's interest to push people to the iTunes store for media it could also drive people away.

I rented a movie from ITunes yesterday and now I cannot figure out how to watch it on Apple TV. I have done this before, and to watch it later on, I would go back under the "Movies" option, find the movie, and there would be a Play option available. We did the update to Apple TV yesterday. Now when I go back to the movie, I see the original options. Preview, Rent, Buy, etc. When I click on Rent again, it says the movie has already been rented but not downloaded. It instructs me to go under Settings/Downloads/Check Downloads, but there is nothing under Settings about Downloads. I found an option to Check for Rentals, but when I click on that option, it just keeps searching, with no results. Any ideas? This worked before the update, even though it took forever to download a movie....

I had the same issue with my apple tv 3rd generation. I rented Sinister and selected the "rent and watch now" option. Half way through the movie I accidentally pressed the menu button. When I looked for the rented movie on my apple tv I could not find it. Not even above the movie pannel where "purchased" and "top movies" comes up on the main menu. the apple tv suggests to go to settings>downloads but I don't have that option. I did go to settings> itunes store> check rentals but that didnt work either. It took too long to even check. Thank you because this SOLUTION worked great.
SOLUTION: How to reset apple tv 3 3rd generation to view rented movies:on the apple tv remote: press and hold "menu" to go to the main menu. Select SETTINGS> GENERAL >RESET >RESET ALL SETTINGS. After the apple tv resets, input all your information again and your rented movies should be visible when you cruise above the "movies" section. THANK YOU!!
Apple needs to solve this issue because honestly it took me 3 hours and a half to watch a movie that only lasted 2 BECAUSE I wast trying to solve the issue, reseting and all. blahh.

If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.

FIrst, did you rent it on your computer? I assume you did.
When you start to watch a rented movie, iTunes needs a quck interaction using the internet to note that you have started watching the movie, and start the 24 hour clock. So you need to have a WiFi connection when you start watching the movie (not for the entire movie, but just for the start).
If you rented the movie in a different country than you are currently in, I don't know how that would work.

How do i transfer movies to watch on my Apple TV

Hi. I have a Dell PC and an Apple TV unit. I have downloaded films through my apple tv and watched them through my av set up in my lounge without any problems. However, when i download them on my PC through iTunes i cannot watch them through my ATV. I am aware i need to transfer these movies to my ATV but am totally stumped and need some help in doing this. My ATV streams from my PC as i am not using it as a hard drive due to my PC being left on 24-7. Any ideas would be most appreciated. Thanks, Mark.

go to the appleTV (settings > computers) and delete the sharing connection to your iTunes Lib and add a linked/syncing connection (top of screen.. sharing is on the bottom).. put in passwords in iTunes etc..
you can still basically have streaming with a syncing library by going to the sync setting tabs in iTunes (click on appleTV under devices in iTunes and you will see all the tabs to the right) and basically turning syncing off for movies, tv shows etc.. then IMPORTANT: in the summary tab uncheck +view only synced items (this will show unsynced items on your appleTV+). then the unsynced items will show up on your appleTV and will be streamed when when clicked on just like before...

Have rented a movie from iTunes but keep getting an error message cannot load film

I have downloaded a rental movie to my iPad started to watch it and it gave me an error of cannot load film, have tried deleting the film from my videos but cannot do that either, when I go back I to iTunes to start the process again it immediately tries to play the film but the same message come up. Any ideas?

Sounds like you might need to take it to an Apple Store but if it is an iPhone 3G it would no longer be under warranty.
Looking at the Apple Store online you can get an iPhone 3GS from $49 on AT&T if it comes to having to get a new one. Your other option is second hand.

You are at the mercy of the content owners/copyright holders. They decide what the Apple can sell in each iTS.

MacBook Pro crashed while deleting old backups off partitioned external hard drive. Now only recognizes windows formatted half of drive. Can the Apple side be saved?

I have an external hard drive:
2 TB Seagate Backup+Desk Media
Partitioned:
1TB - Windows NTFS
1TB - Mac (sorry I can't remember the formatting, whatever Mavricks asked me to use...)
What happened:
I was erasing 3 old backups from the Apple partition and my laptop crashed part way through emptying the trash. (it has done this many times before, where parts of the screen are frozen in square blocks displaced all over the screen. Screenshot not possible unless I use a separate camera).
When I force restarted my computer (holding down the power button) neither side of the drive was accessible. After running the Disk Utility and Verifying and Repairing the Disk Permissions and the Disk Itself (for the Windows side) I was able to access the Windows partition. However, upon attempting to do so with the Mac partition it tells me that it cannot be repaired. I have found many forums discussing SIMILAR situations but none with the same and here is why:
Up until this happening I could access ONLY the Windows partition when the drive was connected to either my Apple laptop in Bootcamp Windows 7 or my HP laptop in Vista, while my MacBook could access both sides of the drive. HOWEVER, after this crash, BOTH my Windows 7 and Vista can access both sides of the drive (so My files are still all there and accessible) but my MacBook Pro swears that the Apple partition is doomed.
Since the Apple side of my laptop is my primary workhorse I really want to figure out how to fix my drive.
So Questions:
1. Anything else I can provide to the experts out there to help me get this fixed?
2. Can I custom fix this via accessing the drive on either of the Windows systems?
3. Why would it suddenly show up in Windows when it became unaccessible to Mac?

UPDATE:
It has been maybe a month since this happened.
After I made this post and was checking emails, walking away from computer, and then came back my Mac partition of the External Drive has shown up on the Desktop...
So, in the ever immortal way of asking the tech to come check the issue and the issue resolving itself, perhaps I should posted on the forum sooner...
NOTE: The disk still shows up as unusable in the Disk Utility and it appears that the files are read only (cannot make a new folder on this side of the external drive)
I still consider this a volatile issue because I do not want to lose the files on this half of the partition and I have not gotten a replacement drive yet (too much data to move to my computer and then format the current drive)
